Q: Number-Sequence Puzzles: What (Not) To Do?

Beastly GerbilSimilar to Code Puzzles: What (Not) To Do? as this is a genre which I feel also drastically needs improvement. 1, 6, 3, 8, 5, 10, 7, 12, ?, ? What are the next two numbers in this sequence? I have seen far too many of these and they make up the quite a lot of the number-sequence puzzle...

1:12 AM
I for one would like to say thanks for the CCCC explanation :P

2:42 AM
I lost The Game

Is that why you were suspended? :)

@Rubio No, I was suspended for asking a question, I believe
wait nvm
that was something else
I was suspended for voting

For voting?

yes
I downvoted several times and forgot to say why

Huh. I'm guessing there was more to it than just that.
Ohh. Were you the one who was downvoting someone to keep them from hitting 3k, and then not undoing it before the timer ran out?

Jim
2:53 AM
Does anyone in here work on any historic unsolved ciphers? I'm asking mostly out of curiosity than anything.

like the ones?
Not me in any case

Jim
I'd have to check and see what that means. But as an example I spend a decent amount of time on Kryptos.
Which is the opposite of what goes on here so as I said it was a curiiosity

Well, there is this:
46
Q: Unsolved Mysteries: Kryptos

GentlePurpleRain This is the second in a series of Unsolved Mysteries posts. These posts explore current unsolved real-world puzzles. Since these have been unsolved for years, it's uncertain whether anyone on on Puzzling.SE will be able to find a solution, but we do have a lot of brilliant minds here... ...

Yeah - so someone posted a handful of real-world unsolved ciphers and enigmas (Kryptos among them) as puzzles here with the tag.

Jim
Got it.
Kryptos is fun for almost no one.
That was a good recap for it though. I actually went out to DC and met with the artist and the cryptographer.

3:00 AM
Heh, wow.

Jim
There's a group of mostly crazy people that claim to "work" on it and it was organized for that.
But it was an interesting life highlight

I bet. Did anyone pester the sculptor about the error in the cipher? hehe

Jim
it wasn't actually an error
So the deal was it was set up that way on purpose but since he didn't want to give anything away about the full puzzle he just said he made an error.

No? I've seen reference to the missing symbol in the ciphertext in at least a couple places, but ok

Jim
Yes, missing character but on purpose
Also, what's not prominently mentioned anywhere is that the cryptographer used some sort of analog masking technique before it was encrypted with classical cryptography (mostly likely still Vigenere to keep it a fair puzzle)

Jim
3:49 AM
Periods (dots?), around 1 bc (i have no thoughts on this), perhaps (feels like the definition)

I was trying for Periods around "one", "bc perhaps?" as def
but can't get much with that so far

Jim
I started there too
Ages, eras around ONE

I started with ibc words, but that was fruitless :)

Jim
Forgot about i

23 hours ago, by Deusovi
Not sure how difficult mine is. (The definition may be a bit unfair...)
there's this factor too.

Jim
3:54 AM
Huh okay
That damn @Deusovi

He's pretty devious, that one is.

Hey!

Heheh

:P

Jim
It's a compliment

3:59 AM
I'm fully aware of that. My "hey" was a greeting, not taking any offense.

Jim
Nope, you YELLED, at me. Offense taken.

lol

Aw, I just thought of a much better clue for the same word with a cleaner definition too.

Jim
Sonofa

You should totally update it then. You know, make it better.

4:02 AM
Is that a request for a hint? :P

And not at all because I have no idea how to proceed. It's totally just to, you know, make a better CCCC. :)

Ohh, sure. Of course it is.

I'm just, er, thinking of the PSE community. :)

This would make the clue significantly easier, unfortunately
Not the clue itself - I don't mind easy clues
but knowing both versions would probably be a dead giveaway

Oh, I'm sure. hehe
I've only been looking at this seriously for maybe an hour, I'm not actually giving up yet

4:04 AM
I am kinda tempted to replace it with the "nicer" clue.
Dunno. What do you all think?
Eh, why not.

Your call.

CCCC: Revolutionary paper: "A - B - C, perhaps?" (8)
Now just forget the previous clue ever existed. :P

Wow. That's pretty different.

Don't tell me the definition was supposed to be "C, perhaps?"

Nope, not that. That's all I'm saying for now.
I wouldn't be that unfair.

4:07 AM
I think I know what it is now :P
Only half parsed it before and didn't get the first part

(Although I did use "C? (4)" as a double-def &lit for NOTE at one point.)
Go ahead and answer!

Does one merely just blurt out the answer or something? :P

Yeah, basically, and then you write another clue.

you give the answer and its construction from wordplay

Well then SEMITONE = {TIMES}<- + ONE = B->C, perhaps?
Now you've got me on the spot :P

4:09 AM
Yep!

nice, good job

Original definition was "BC, perhaps" but I deemed it too unfair.

(I actually came to ask Deusovi which SUMS team you were on :P)

oh, nice!

@Sp3000 Oh! I'm on Test Solution, Please Ignore.
Are you participating too?

4:10 AM
... mumbles (writing)

hehe

Jim
Can someone explain that answer more for me

Ooh, you're a writer for SUMS? Cool - which puzzles did you make?

Jim
I still don't get it

Well, I would say the old def wasn't too bad, since that is how you say intervals (or at least how I would)

4:11 AM
paper=times, revolutionary means flip it around backwards; add "one" (for "A");

@Jim "Revolutionary" literally means turning around. The TIMES is a paper, and A is "one"; turn TIMES around and add to ONE and you get SEMITONE, which the interval between B and C is.

b->c is def. for SEMITONE
the previous clue works similarly

I.4, III.1, V.1, V.3
Some were a bit... cleaner than others, unfortunately :/

Periods around -> TIMES flipped; then "one" from 1BC; then B->C, perhaps for def

Yep.
@Volatility Yeah, it wasn't terrible. But I would expect some sort of connector between B and C when writing.

Jim
4:12 AM
Got it now

@Sp3000 Oh nice! I loved V.3... except the extraction, which took us forever because of a mistake.
(Also, didn't realize you were a fan of 999 too!)

Jim
It's all about picking up on the reversal clues

The first clue intentionally made "periods around 1" seem like a container clue. Then I decided to be less evil the second time around.

Yeah... one of them has an ambiguity if you interpret it a little differently - tried to clarify that but couldn't think of a good way :/

"around" was particularly cruel, as it's probably more often used as a container indicator
and revolutionary, possibly, an anagram one

4:13 AM
Let me guess - the top right one?

I actually thought it was a double def for far too long :P

That's the ambiguity that tripped us up.

Yeah top right

Not sure if this is too spoilery, but was there a method to extraction ordering besides anagramming?

No there isn't, but if you look around the outside you'll notice that the panels aren't really in random order either

4:15 AM
To be honest, I'm not sure what you're referring to. I guess we'll get it when the solution guide comes out.
Also, I'd like to thank you for not involving spoilers in your puzzle's extraction. You know what I'm talking about.
(Well, you should.)

:) there's one part where you might accidentally run into some, but I did try to keep spoilers down yeah
(trying to think of good clues on the spot is hard)

Yeah, it's fine!
Anyway, I really enjoyed all three of your puzzles. Some of the others seem... less polished, to put it gently.
Was there a testsolving process at all?

Some were... tested more thoroughly than others, unfortunately. :/

We noticed two "typos" in I.3 that severely affected the puzzle. :/
But still, your puzzles were fantastic. c: Are you part of a team in the MIT Mystery Hunt?

Ah... did you guys email about it out of curiosity?

4:20 AM
No, we didn't.
It wasn't fixable easily.

... ah :/ I think the writer would probably appreciate it if you let him know, but that's annoying...

Jim
@Rubio yes I would never have considered around as "turn around", but I also have limited experience

Re: MIT nope unfortunately, just doing the Australian 3 is a lot for a year :P

Aw, really? You should definitely solve with us! :D
We're a mostly-remote team, and we'd be happy to have you join.

Hmm that sounds kind of good actually - didn't realise people did MIT remote

4:24 AM
(Also, I've probably spent too much time recruiting for TSPI in this chat. I'd put up a community ad if I had any graphic design skills. :P )

4:37 AM
(I feel like I'm holding up the cryptic chain :P do you guys normally just quickfire this or how does this go?)

(Sometimes people take several hours to post a new clue, sometimes it's almost instant. It depends, and nobody really minds. Clues can last a while anyway.)

As quick as the next person can come up with something they're happy with
I've taken a good while on a couple of mine, so no rush at all
Unless it's Deusovi. Difficulty increases exponentially with time taken to devise for his, so we want him to post them more or less immediately. ;)

:P

Agreed ;)

I think someone needs to figure out if Will's SATISFACTORY is indeed the longest to solve CCCC so far, and by how much. That one was a killer.

4:40 AM
Yeah, definitely.

Back in a while, gotta go give someone a ride

The LOTE one took a week, I think

That one doesn't count. :P

@Scon, I love the last two on this answer :P

CCCC: Most verifiable case of theft around nice streets? (6)

4:57 AM
hmm
i'm guessing streets is the def
unless it's most verifiable

TRUEST
Explain coming shortky

:) nice

@Rubio Gosh darnit, I was about to say that

Case of theft is TT. French (Nice) streets - RUES.

Hm, I'm not sure if that quite works. Necessary capitalizations generally have to be kept.
Still, I liked the "case of theft" for TT - very clever!

5:06 AM
I think hence the ?

Yeah I wasn't sure whether that was unfair :/ Could have probably made it a lot easier and kept it at Parisian

I liked it as is personally :)
Gonna need a bit to post a new one. Still in the car.

I shall keep the capitalisation thing in mind though :P still getting a feel for the do's and don'ts (or is it don't's?)

@Sp3000 don't's.

5:30 AM
Huh, I didn't realise MIT's puzzle hunt is so close
Always thought it was later in the year for some reason

Nope! Martin Luther King weekend.

I see a Google Form and I shall fill it. Probably won't be able to help that much time-wise, but interested to see how things go :)

Sounds good! We have a lot of people who just drop in occasionally, so that's not a problem c:

To be honest, part of the reason I never did much MIT was because I thought if I look at the size of MIT's hunt I'd feel like every puzzle idea has been done already :P

@Deusovi do you happen to know when I will be told if/when I am accepted?

5:37 AM
@TrojanByAccident Nope. I've tried to contact our team leader, but there hasn't been a response. I'll try again though
@Sp3000 Yeah, I get that feeling a lot. Turns out there's a lot of puzzle-able material left though!

Yeah... I get that feeling for most of the year but then it gets close to hunt date and only then do ideas start coming together :/ (not great for test solving)

I keep a text document with puzzle ideas. Right now, there are about 20-30 things floating around in there (most not very fleshed out), plus a few half-finished puzzles in a spreadsheet.

Mine's just the "not very fleshed out" list :P

Most of mine in that list are just a few words.

Well as long as it reminds you of what the idea was :)

5:42 AM
@Deusovi Alright.

Just scrolled up and realised I missed a comment - yeah very much into 999 as well. Part of the reason I wanted that one this year was, well, Zero Time Dilemma finally came out :)

Have you played it yet?

Yup :P got it as soon as it came out
Pretty stoked for the PC versions coming out next year too, because Virtue's Last Reward in 3DS has that game-breaking bug that makes me not want to replay it...

You might also like the Ace Attorney and Danganronpa games.
And Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, my favorite game of all time. (It's where my avatar is from.)

Been through all the Ace Attorneys, but not Danganronpa. Shall check that out :P
And yep, I do recognise Ghost Trick :) Used to replay, what was it, part 10 all the time?

5:51 AM
Even the Investigations games?

Yup

The fan-translated one was my favorite game of the AA series.

I tried playing that one in Japanese, so some parts probably went over my head. I should probably get around to try the patch some time. :P

"Tried playing" - did you not finish? Oh man, you're missing out

I did finish, but probably didn't understand the story as well as I could have (I did read around afterwards at the time to fill in the holes, but it's a different experience of course...)
Well Dangan's on sale. Why not :P

6:00 AM
It's basically a cross between Ace Attorney and Zero Escape.
(Just warning you, I have heard mixed reviews of it. I personally enjoyed it though.)

:) we'll see how it goes, thanks for the recommendation

CCCC: Dropped primary frequency, trimmed hums, +10dB, mixed, and finally faded. (7)

Wow.

Thinking Dropped is the def?

Or "faded".

6:06 AM
'mixed' references anagrams
@Deusovi maybe. I was more thinking finally fadeD, though.

I have a word in mind but it's only half parsing...

Jim
I'm going to pretend I never saw this CCCC

@TrojanByAccident I was at first too, but it could also be "and finally".

@Deusovi hmm...

Jim
Anagram IODB?

6:10 AM
Stuck on the +10dB, mixed part :P

@Jim or tIOdB

Jim
@TrojanByAccident yeah I wasn't sure if + could be T

Ah, I see what you mean

Okay I think I'm convinced it's FUMBLED now

That's what I was thinking too. But it looks to me like the wordplay gives FUMB10DD
which isn't exactly the same thing

6:13 AM
:/

Dropped = primary [F]requency + trimmed h[UM]s + (10*deci)BEL mixed + finally fade[D]

Oh!

@Sp3000 nice!

That "10dB" part was sneaky, Rubio.

Talk about it :P

Jim
6:14 AM
What's the answer here?

FUMBLED
F_ + (-h)UM(-s) + BLE* + _D
where BLE comes from mixed BEL, which is "10 * deci-bel'

Jim
I still don't get it :) as usual

Dropped | primary frequency, | trimmed hums, | +10dB, mixed, | and finally faded.
Dropped: definition
Primary frequency: F
Trimmed hums: UM

Seems like a bel is actually a thing but just rarely used nowadays, interesting...
(as a unit, I mean)

10dB mixed: BEL mixed, by logic above
finally faded: D

Jim
6:17 AM
I can't get to BEL, but I'll pretend I get it so I don't seem stupider than I am

Deci- is the prefix meaning 1/10.
So 10 decibels is one Bel.

ah
I was wondering that too

It is an indirect anagram, although I suppose 10dB -> BEL is unambiguous enough

Yeah. I'm not complaining too much because it's small.

derp. Sorry, FUMBLED is correct
and heh, I actually worked that out in the car on the way home and completely spaced on it being an indirect anagram. hehe

6:20 AM
lol

I normally wouldn't have missed that, sorry!

No worries!

@Rubio SHAME

lol

Yes, I know. (*hangs head sorrowfully*)
And I didn't even have "ICE" in there. I'm definitely slipping.

6:22 AM
Hm?

Bad joke, left over from the carbonless diamond

Oh yeah.

I'm just going to start indicating "C" with "shaved ice" from now on ;)

so, @Sp3000 got that, I think?

6:25 AM
Yep!

I kinda liked (the sound of) that surface reading. ;)

Yeah, it was nice.
Night!

Cya Trojan

Night :)
Yeah interesting surface

6:29 AM
Ooooh, just came up with a great clue.

You make me want to just keep a stockpile of clues in case I ever need them now :P

That's... kinda what I do? I've reused some clues I wrote for other things here.

I had a few stockpiled, but had a good run over the past two days and burned through them all

And occasionally I stockpile one or two clues until I can get one
Your clues are always overcomplicated :P

Meh :)
From you, I'm not sure if I can take that as a compliment or not. hehe
"Show dog retreating a piece. (8)" was actually pretty simple.

6:33 AM
True.
My clues here aren't actually bad though - I just like doing more gimmicky things here since I have more freedom of word choice than in the puzzles I post.
@Sp3000, you might like this one I posted earlier:
7 - (6 - 9) = 10, maybe (4)

EVEN?

Yep!

Nice :P

"Taking notice of an X in the notice. (9)" also pretty simple. I liked the surface on both of those.
that EVEN one is lovely :)

CCCC: Beginning to spot a lead within criminal's diary (9)

6:52 AM
I think I have the answer, but can't get the beginning to fit
oh, hang on

I think I have it if you don't.

SCRAPBOOK, "Beginning to spot" -> S, "a lead within criminal" -> A+PB within CROOK, def: "diary"

yup
just got there too

Oooh, I love that one.

Yeah, nice surface!

6:55 AM
:) nicely done

CCCC: Assembling one piece of Schubert's (8)
I'm out for a bit, bbl

Sid
So many CCCC..

7:27 AM
Aieeee. Still not sure which piece is definition.

@Volatility- Is it Symphony(An arrangement-Assembling) it's a piece of Schubert's link

@Techidiot Nope

@Techidiot I don't see how you get the wordplay there.

I applied no word plays. ;) It was a wild guess considering there are 2 def's and nothing else

10:51 AM
Can't tell if need more music knowledge or just really well hidden def :P

Q: Christmas light horror story!

TheGreatEscaperInspired by stories of strangely behaved Christmas lights here on Puzzling, I feel comfortable now to share my own Christmas light horror story. Q: 2017 is the 1st prime satisfying three conditions. What is the 2nd?

Joseph O'Rourke(1)   $2017$ is prime, and so is $(2017+1)/2=1009$. (2)   $2017$ can be written as $a^2 + b^4$: $2017 = 44^2 + 3^4 = 1936 + 81$. (3)   $2017 \equiv 2 \bmod 31$. What is the next prime (if any) that satisfies these same three conditions?
