Many parts have built-in ESD protection so first of all you'll have to settle for a level (described in EN 61000-4-2) for contact and air discharges, then check if all parts fulfill that requirement or if there's a need for additional external protection. @Newbie Be careful with comments like that. Yes, ICs have some level of ESD protection. But that's hardly ever enough even for the mildest 61000-4-2 level.
You'll read in the datasheets that an ICs has against ESD with Human Body Model (HBM). The energy in the 61000-4-2 levels is greater than the HBM when test voltages are equal.
