running "bundle update debugger" gives "Could not find gem 'debugger'."
Try running gem install debugger and then run bundle update debugger.
gem install debugger ran. bundle update debugger returns "Could not find gem 'debugger'."
Please respond if this means I should check anything else before trying the downgrade.
One last thing? Try running bundle install
Ends in the same error. I'm going to include the full response to make this clearer. Not enough space to do so. ill try to edit the question to add it. (see the top post again)

It seems like you are going to need ruby 1.9.3. Since you are using rvm that might not be much of a problem for you.
That did it. Thanks Sampriti.
Sampriti "rail server" will not run after bundle install finished. its saying "No command 'rail' found, did you mean: ..."
Its rails server
Sorry, typo when I ran it the second time, ran "rails server" that an received a long error in return. ending in " from /home/ubuntu/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p545/gems/railties-3.1.0/lib/rails/commands.rb‌‌:49:in <top (required)>' from script/rails:6:in require' from script/rails:6:in `<main>' "
Hi, We should probably discuss in this chat.
Sorry for all the questions.
Will I add the error message into the chat? Ive already added it to the post?

I will edit it out, since its not related to the question.
You should post the log here.
Ok. I was wondering if the bundle install did not work right when the rake install is failing. I'll post the error here
saasbook@saasbook:~/Documents/rottenpotatoes$ rails server
/home/ubuntu/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p545/gems/ruby-debug-base19-0.11.25/lib/ruby-debug-base.rb:1:in `require': /home/ubuntu/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p545/extensions/x86-linux/1.9.1/ruby-debug-base19-0.11.25/ruby_debug.so: undefined symbol: ruby_current_thread - /home/ubuntu/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p545/extensions/x86-linux/1.9.1/ruby-debug-base19-0.11.25/ruby_debug.so (LoadError)

From where did you get the rottenpotatoes app?
The first time it failed, I also tried " rake db:migrate" and "rvm all do rake db:migrate" in case I had to run those first. but they did not work. I can give those error messages if needed.
the one that came with the vm
the folder that was already there
i just cded into it
Ok can you post the contents of the whole Gemfile?
it should be inside the rottenpotatoes folder.
sorry for the delay. ive used the old vm machine (but did not have the time to finish) but im still a noob, posting now
gem 'uglifier'
end

gem 'jquery-rails'

# Use unicorn as the web server
# gem 'unicorn'

# Deploy with Capistrano
# gem 'capistrano'

# To use debugger
gem 'ruby-debug19', :require => 'ruby-debug'
gem 'haml'

Replace the second last line with
gem 'debugger'
save the file
and run bundle install
That should work.
gem 'debugger', :require => 'ruby-debug' or just gem 'debugger'
just gem 'debugger'
thanks trying now
That worked. Thanks for all the help.
