00:00 - 20:0020:00 - 00:00

12:37 AM
@jrista ya, if i was going to use it just as a mpc then that'd be fine, but I'm trying to use it as a desktop for a netbook as a thin client
and I want more memory and more cpu than that

12:54 AM
@jrista @JeffAtwood - Sometimes I feel a bit confused about SE policy - podcasts have mentioned before that SE is interested in keeping users worth keeping but it sure doesn't feel like that very much. I'm not defending my somewhat poor choice of diction - I should have be nicer , but it doesn't feel like kid gloves should be pulled out for a user whose been to other SE sites and outright refuses to make a simple improvement on a post that betters the community.

@rfusca yeah, you got told, man. :)

lol
meanwhile...best.wife.ever. Looks like she is going to get a new job without more money and with me even asking has said I can have a 'photography budget'
2

1:12 AM
without more money?
the best wife ever gets a job with a lot more money, man. :)

oops
*with more money and without me even...
@mattdm lol

ahh that's better :)

@rfusca Meh. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, personally. You're right that what we want are users worth keeping, and if someone's ego/temperament/personality/whatever is going to be so fragile as to 'take their ball and go home' after a couple semi-critical comments then (in my opinion) they aren't users who are going to be worth keeping around. We regulars are an opinionated bunch and I for one like that we talk pretty frankly with one another and with the site in general...
If I had to worry about being politically correct in order to not hurt someone's fragile feelings every time I posted something, I probably wouldn't hang around for too long, honestly...

@JayLancePhotography Well I won't be losing sleep over it, but I've read @Jeff's blog for years and respect the guy and what he's done with SE, so I feel a tinge of guilt when he stops by to say something as such.

That's cool, I guess. Most of the time he kinda comes across like a dick to me... But that's just my opinion and I'm quite certain that there are some who think the same of me (and I couldn't care less). :-)

1:18 AM
@JayLancePhotography the regulars are, for sure - we've all got fairly thick skin. But we do have to be wary of jumping on people who aren't on photo.se for hours a day.
@JayLancePhotography lol

@rfusca Yeah, well... I think it's totally debatable as to whether you 'jumped all over' anyone making your comments. And if 'piss-poor' is the line we're drawing for being 'so insulted I'm quitting' then that might be a problem... :-)
There's a line to be drawn somewhere in between 'skin so thick a bullet will bounce off it' and 'skin so thin saying 'hello' makes a guy wet his pants.' :-)
Scrappydog's response definitely felt more on the 'wet his pants' end of the spectrum.

I think over on stack overflow, people just downvote without leaving any comments. here we tend to do the opposite, at least at first.

@JayLancePhotography well I don't think I jumped all over him, but I do regret uses the words 'piss poor' - its just not something I normally do.
@mattdm ya, i checked beforehand that he was SE experienced, which is one of the reason I didn't come out with the kid gloves on once he said the whole "Opinion noted" (like I dared to comment on it).

@mattdm Not being a SO user I didn't know that. Seems weird... I'd rather leave a comment and give someone a chance to tweak things than to 'spend rep' up front with a bunch of downvotes.
Maybe when we're bigger and it's possible for an answer to gather some serious downvotes it'll become more of a dynamic...

I think also we tend to look at every answer. On the bigger sites, the poor answers just get no upvotes and are ignored.

1:27 AM
true

Probably something that will change as we grow as well...

i hope not

I notice that most of the guy's answers over on SO have 0 votes.
I'm just sayin'.

Tough to look at every answer and consider it carefully when we're getting a ton of questions and answers every day...

he isn't really a big user, as far as I could tell
I agree with Jeff that the use of "piss poor" is what did the user in
and that could have been worded better
but I think the user was being a bit contrary as well

1:29 AM
Well, he is from Minneapolis... So right there you know we got a problem... ;-)

it sounds like he had already formulated an opinion about PhotoSE before that incident anyway

We definitely shouldn't say "piss poor". I think we all know that. :)

@mattdm thanks :P
speaking of Minneapolis - wonder where @dpollit 's been

@rfusca no problem man :)
I gotta go. ttyl

@mattdm ciao

1:33 AM
I spent the afternoon and cleared out almost 400g of photographs and video from my 'collections.'

@JayLancePhotography wow

My data drives are currently at a very svelt 2.4 terabytes. :-)

@JayLancePhotography I would take you over Jeff in most cases. ;)

Lol. Thanks! I think... ;-)

if I needed someone who has a rediculous amount of knowledge hosting microsoft technology on high-load servers...I'd obviously go find Jeff

@jrista i linked that before
hmm maybe not in chat but in that q about 7d sealing

2:09 AM
@JayLancePhotography surprised you're not rocking a petabyte

1 hour later…
3:11 AM
I'm holding out for an exabyte drive. ;-)

@JayLancePhotography thats A LOT of pics
oh ya i think @dpollit is on his trip
@JayLancePhotography do you have liuke a top N fav picts you've ever taken

3:48 AM
I hate to say it, but not really. It's a total cliche but my favorite tends to be 'whatever I'm working on right this moment.'
I have a few sets from high school and another few sets from college that I'm especially fond of because they have my friends in them, but they aren't any great shakes technically... It's mostly sentimental value. :-)
Jeez... Now you got me thinking about it... :-) I actually have a much easier time hating work that I do for myself. I can detach myself from client work and pick the 'winners' very easily... But (as an example) I've never taken a picture of my wife that I'm happy with (not because of her, she's a knockout, but because of me)... I expect I'll feel the same way about all the pictures I take of Abby...

@JayLancePhotography i've got one pic of Kathleen (my daughter) that I LOVE
with the exception that since it was really dark, it was manual focus and its just ever, ever so slighly out of focus
just a hair

4:48 AM
@jrista - is it possible to undo a close vote?

I can reopen a closed question
I don't think its possible to undo a vote though
at least, not with my powers

ic
@jrista I still think the louiseville, Ky q is probably too subjective, but after reading @mattdm's meta meta.photo.stackexchange.com/questions/63/… and Joel's meta meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/4818/… - I'm swayed in regards to some of the too localized q's

@mattdm makes a really good point...

jrista has added Jay Lance Photography to the list of this room's owners.

@JayLancePhotography: I'm making you a room admin, as I have with @rfusca, in case anyone pops in here that needs some tempering, and us mods aren't around.

4:54 AM
@jrista yup

not really sure how much control you have with chat room ownership, really
but, there ya have it

lol

heh, when I made rfusca an owner earlier, I realized we don't actually seem to have ban ability
and I seem to have lost the kick link
I know its somewhere...

Sounds good. I'll go ahead and keep @rfusca from abusing his newfound power when you're not around... Somehow...
;-)

lol
oh...there's kick

4:56 AM
damn it, there goes my plan for ...world... chat domination

just click the user's icon next to their chat entries
aww, strike doesn't work

booo

booo

Yay?
Oh, wait... Booo.

lol?

4:56 AM
you would!

rofl
wow
I apparently have a sweet photo of the milky way with old old faithful in the foreground

?

i have dozens of deep sky and night sky photos for my screensaver on my media pc
that one just cycled through...

ic

I'll see if I can find the file

4:59 AM
i just don't even know what to say meta.photo.stackexchange.com/questions/1212/…

Interesting... I still can't star my own posts, but I can pin them, and pinning takes priority over stars. Hmmm... Is the intended use for, say, admin messages to the group, do you suppose? Announcements that need to show up on the top...

yeah, pretty much
@rfusca I'm just going to start redirecting them all here.
If someone wants critique, they should come here for some real-time help, rather than post in the photo contest.
That seems to be what at least half the people posting random photos really want anyway.

perhaps

maybe not half
man, now I'm a paranoid little obsessive backup twit

now? ;)

5:03 AM
I have no less than...7 backups of all the important data on my C drive
not counting the real-time non-stop backup that acronis does

Lol. Overkill much?

they are all over the place now -.-
@JayLancePhotography heh..hehe....you say that now....

How do you keep 'em all synced?

I don't
its just paranoia

5:05 AM
"Hmm....I feel a disaster lurking...time to make an EXTRA backup of all my critical data...just in case my automatic ones stop working for some reason."
I had that catastrophic failure in January

lost my backup drive, which silently killed my automatic backups, then I lost three more drives, which took out my semi-paranoid random manual backups that I used to do every 6-8 months, along with all my original data...
I tell ya
truly terrifying experience
thinking you lost....everything
but it IS getting a little out of hand now
I must be consuming nearly 3 Tb of drive space between multiple copies of my music and photography, my critical data, and my non-stop backups

talk about a disaster...I had a colleague recently whose gas grill propane tank sprung a leak, caught on fire, blew up, hit a gas line in his house, and the whole house was a fireball inside of a minute

:o

thats a disaster

5:07 AM
Ouch. :-O

I feel so small now...

did that actually occur?

luckily, they heard the first explosion, thought it was from the front, ran out to see what it was and got out just before the whole house blew up
yup

guess he wasn't using blue rhino.

5:07 AM
Wow.
That's crazy.

how did the propane tank catch on fire? Were they grilling at the time?

it was one of those gas exchange things. Fire dept. said those are crazy dangerous and blow up more than you'd think - because you never know how the last guy was treating the tank
that, I don't know

wow

i know they weren't grilling though

thats about as terrible a home disaster as it gets

5:09 AM
yup
lucky they survived

No kidding.

they lost pretty much everything

I think fire is the thing that scares me the most

water damage, ice, wind/hail roof damage
all that kind of stuff is usually recoverable
and tends to only take some of your belongings with it, if any
but fire....
it consumes everything

5:10 AM
they had one of those gas lines run outside for an outdoor gas fireplace, and the first explosion got that and just..boom

Hooray for offsite storage.

lol

yup

I have so much invested in furniture now
this past year, I furnished the bulk of my house
living room, dining room, bedroom, got new light fixtures, redid blinds and repainted rooms
a lot of it is unique stuff too
irreplacable
it would be devastating to lose it in a fire

just leave buckets of water strategically around the house

5:13 AM
lol

oh...thats it?

:)

I was looking all over strobies site...I must have seen that several times...it looks so innocuous

Yeah, but can it be used as a mini softbox?
;-)

5:15 AM
i was waiting for that

haha!

Guess I'm too predictable. :-)

that IS the question
^-- I'd LOVE to see something like that

okie tex is nice

Nice. A picture of the first Transformers falling to earth, right? ;-)

5:20 AM
Optimus Prime is really feeling the heat in that photo

does he say what it is
cuz it could probably just be an iridium satellite
and if thats the case you can see them all the time
but, not at that sharp of an angle

oh no, its a bolide alright
a big one

cool

that puppy is drilling strait into the atmosphere
ones that big are pretty rare

lucky picture then

5:23 AM
I've seen a couple in my lifetime, but none that brilliant
one was back in 1994....it was literally the picture-perfect "shooting star"....the thing arced across the sky, leaving a brilliant glittered trail behind it
I was on a mission trip to Jordan (in the middle east) at the time, and it was probably one of the most memorable moments of my life
^--- its a bit noisy, but compositionally its pretty nice...I love the big star

cool

2 hours later…
7:24 AM
@jrista no, she pissed off the director during the last one.

3 hours later…
10:14 AM
@jrista That's really nice. Awesome sky.

5 hours later…
3:08 PM
hows it going @mattdm

brb

3:43 PM
@DLambert Its not mine, btw...just something I found in my collection of space and night sky photos. I thought it was pretty unique though, with a time-lapse foreground of old faithful.

4:03 PM
@rfusca hi. :)
hey, @rfusca, wanna split up your answer on meta.photo.stackexchange.com/questions/1227/…?

@jrista Got it. In that case, you're right -- it's really noisy. ;-)
(still a cool photo, though)

@DLambert all the trees are falling over though
tis an interesting photo none the less. lots to look at, just keep finding myself tilting my head

@JamWheel Yeah. Between that and the noise, I'd bet a little post-processing would improve it quite a bit.

i'm not that bothered by the noise to be honest
huh, wonder why some people's names in chat are in italics
ah... room owners apparently

@JamWheel just the cool people

4:18 PM
or in your case - someone who has paid a sufficient bribe :P

@mattdm split out my business idea for the blog, everything else had been posted again
@JamWheel well...i'll not deny it...

@rfusca k. :)
if you could delete the original so everyhting is in the same format that'd make me happy. :)

well its all about making you happy

I know, right? :)

are you being a formatting pedant?
:P

4:24 PM
@mattdm in regards to how-tos. I think we should do more of a "here's something to try and the complete steps to do it, with sample pics, setup pics, technical reasons, everything" - many a time we leave that kind of stuff out of answers to q's

if you do that, make sure before you publish it, that one of the others follows the steps to see you haven't missed anything daft from the steps (which is easier to do without realising than you think)

@JamWheel indeed, it has to be 'approved' by a second anyway I believe

yeh, but with step by steps that approved should go beyond reading through it... try it :)

a valid point

having written sooooooooo many process documents
it is so easy to miss a bit which is so second nature in your head you don't write it down without noticing

4:30 PM
But we want that in answers to questions, don't we?

@mattdm Sometimes sure, but often times I think its overkill. If I ask "what are extension tubes" - I don't want a four page treatise on the subject.

@rfusca I do! :)

Realistically, prior to bring this up, if somebody posted a question that said "Can somebody show me everything to do with reverse lens macro, include the how, the why, setup pictures, several examples, and compare it to alternate methods?" We would ask for it to be split out and point them to half a dozen places. I'm suggesting a definitive post you can learn more about a subject than a single answer covers
@mattdm ya, but you're a freak of nature ;)

Honestly, I think the goal of Stack Exchange is exactly to accumulate amazing, stellar answers for even simple questions.
Sometimes, that's a simple short answer. But if the question is "How do I use reverse-lens macro", and someone posts a whole article an the subject, awesome.

@mattdm A stellar answer does not mean throwing the book at somebody everytime.

4:36 PM
If no one wants to produce such an answer, that's one thing. But if we're suggesting doing so for the blog, why not just put the same thing on the site itself?

@mattdm For example you choose to throw the book at the person about Pentax lenses and it felt rather out of place to me, given their question (especially unfinished).
@mattdm Because I think such 'answers' are sometimes out of the scope of the questions asked.
its just an opinion
its not something i'll fight to the death on

Not trying to fight to the death. :)

4:57 PM
@mattdm You can really make a similar argument for "best question of the week" and "best answer of the week" stuff - why are we reposting content or links to content that already exists (the meta posts suggests elaborating on it, why shouldn't that go in the original answer/question)? If its that good it should stand on its own! There's going to be crossover between the site and blog.

Well, the answer-of-the-week idea is specifically because answers aren't very visible on the site. The idea is to increase that visibility -- not to replace it.

@mattdm If somebody had an interest in the answer - why wouldn't they have had an interest in the question that sparked the answer?....If somebody gives a great answer to places to shoot wildlife in Louisville, KY - if I cared about that answer, I would have clicked on the question.

@rfusca sometimes, you don't know you were interested in the question until you see the great answer. :)
The thing about the moire-based focus adjustment is an example. I barely would have clicked on that, because I know how to use a focus chart. But turns out I learned something new.

@mattdm I guess we're just different in that regard - although I can acknowledge that its a good answer to the question - it still doesn't spark my interest.
Its still a good answer to an uninteresting subject to me.

I don't have another example offhand, but surely you can think of an occasion where you learned something interesting/useful under a heading which didn't strike you initially?
anyway. gotta go.

5:08 PM
If the blog focuses on best answers/questions and some reviews - I probably won't be contributing. While I think those should be part of it, and even suggested them, I think they should be filler for something else.
@mattdm ciao

5:33 PM
@rfusca I agree. We don't just want to replicate content...we want to add new content. I think blogs on techniques and blogs on equipment are two ways to bring new content to our forum.

@jrista agree
btw cough @Jay was supposed to contribute to the PotW, this week cough

Evening all

@ElendilTheTall evening

Having the blog yabber on about answers and questions is stupid IMHO
That's what the main site is for

@rfusca Dang it, you're right. TBH, I kinda felt like the field had improved a bit since we had that conversation and maybe it wasn't necessary any more? I could be wrong though... Do you think I should still post something?

5:36 PM
we can see what answers are good because they're upvoted

@JayLancePhotography I like the top two well enough, that I'm not concerned, but its always fun to poke at you

@rfusca diplomatically worded... ;)

I figured. ;-) I just got busy/lazy. Maybe I'll pull something out for next week. I actually did go poke through some of my photos and I have to confess that part of the problem is that I overwhelmingly favor portrait orientation in my composition...

@ElendilTheTall well i just posted on meta that if we're going to highlight stuff like that, at least lets do it all in one go with a "This past week in Photo.se" post, highlight answers, questions, and the PotW. That way if you like that stuff, its all in one go. If you don't, its one thing to skip.

Which doesn't work so well with our header crop requirements.

5:39 PM
@JayLancePhotography i do too, portrait oreintation
90% of the stuff I like is portrait
@ElendilTheTall lol, I wasn't trying to be diplomatic
@JayLancePhotography scary that the purple fringing answer was getting upvotes

Hey, it could be purple fringing
if he'd dropped his lens off a tall building
or put it in a blender

lol

@JayLancePhotography I think it was you that suggested I rotate the Peregrine a little in my shot
I did, and it works
much more dynamic
<bows>

Lol. It looks like it's going somewhere and doing something now. :-)
Happy to help. :-)
@rfusca I know. That's the whole reason I whipped up an answer. I couldn't believe it got 4 upvotes.

If only they hunted frogs :)

5:50 PM
If it's any consolation, I like yours better. Screw the nitpicking that went on in the comments... I think the split tone and gradient looks great.

Thank you
I'm not sure about the composition in the frog one I must say, all due respect to D. Lambert

Well, you know... Every frog has his day. Lol. ;-)

lol

lol

5:54 PM
Split-toning is my go-to technique for drab shots
and considering I'm rarely able to get out for the Golden Hours, most of my shots are drab :)

lol

I like split-tone as well. Not as hum-drum as standard B&W, not so over-the-top as sepia toning...

precisely

its not a technique I've played with at all

I use a gradient map adjustment layer, takes 10 seconds and is very tweakable
For some reason I never remember to save the gradient though

6:02 PM
@JayLancePhotography I think you have the apostrophe in the wrong place: Captain, capt'n or cap'n, right?

@ElendilTheTall i like that second alot

thanks
It's a library, believe it or not

@ElendilTheTall I really just wanted to get some people off their duffs to post a couple more pictures. We can't have a damned frog win, after all, can we?? ;-)

@DLambert hey, as frog shots go it's a good one
;D

;-)

6:04 PM
@jrista Flagged it for moderation. ;-)

hahaha

I mean, if it was singing show tunes or something, sure, right?

@jrista Awww, removed completely? Sad. :-(

sorry, I mangled that flag ...
my bad

I'd already fixed that <_<
oh well

6:05 PM
I don't know that that can be undone either
@badp look at the history, I did it before you :p

@jcolebrand Cool!

@rfusca that building was the first public building in the country to be completely electrically lit. It was finished in 1905, and when they checked the electrics in 1996 they found some of the original bulbs still working

At any rate.
poof

gone again, just wanted to apologize to Jay

Lol. Hey, that brought new visitors around. Quick, indoctrinate them into the photography cult!

6:07 PM
ya, Jay has a pretty fragile ego

sniff sniff

<violins>

@Jay what are you getting apologized to for?

They screwed up my comment when they tried to edit it.
Ended up just removing it instead of fixing it.

oh

6:09 PM
the temerity!

Apparently once it's been removed it can't be put back.

which site?

Oh well... I'll just have to do this:
@ElendilTheTall Oh capt'n, my capt'n...
There we go.

oooh, ic
gotcha
lol
funny

hello

6:18 PM
Hi!

Son of a... gun... That purple fringing answer is still picking up upvotes! :-/

terrifying

6:37 PM
If I never watch Cinderella again, I can die a happy man.

Oh, the joy of having a little girl? :-)

indeed

My friend's kid is absolutely addicted to Yo Gabba Gabba... Every time we sit for them she brings a pile of DVDs. >.<
I guess it's slightly better than Barney... :-)

@JayLancePhotography Ban that stuff.
slightly
Kathleen's on a disney princess kick right now
i can pretty much quote all of Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Alladin, and Beauty and the Beast

Indeed. Every time I am forced to sit through Yo Gabba Gabba I just think that there must be a lot of drug use going on at that production. :-/
It seems like the sort of show that some of my college friends would watch while high.

6:42 PM
There certainly was whoever signed off on it. Now they just gotta pretend they were so they're pushing it ;)
friends...right

Well... 'dorm friends...' :-)

7:17 PM
This is cool:

Well yeah, but where's the Exposure Tricycle?
Kidding. That's pretty slick...

@JayLancePhotography it wasn't me...maybe the chat just couldn't handle your poor spelling, and gobbled it up on its own.

@jrista No, it was some guys from 'elsewhere' that had enough rep to respond to the flag...

oh, yeah
flags do show up globally, so any mod can deal with them

Anyone with 10k+ of rep can... I occasionally grab one from a different chat room. Apparently I don't have the power to grab my OWN flagged chat messages, though. :-P

7:49 PM
Do i get some kind of massive rep bonus for getting 3 starred comments in a row? :D

@ElendilTheTall hmm?

damnation!

?

just realised I didn't get 3 in a row

ic
eyes must be playing tricks on ya

7:55 PM
evidently

@ElendilTheTall looks like you did to me though?

Well that's weird
there was a comment about 'yo gabba gabba' or something,

@ElendilTheTall ?

and now its back!

@ElendilTheTall You don't get a rep bonus. But getting 3 starred comments in a row is such a feat of unparalleled skill that @rfusca will personally send you a check for $4.32.

7:59 PM
@ElendilTheTall I don't see it?

@JayLancePhotography woo!
