Ben
07:02
You enter the dark room, and the smell of old meat hits you immediately. The sound of clinking chains meets your ears, and in the darkness, you can see what appears to be large hunks of meat hanging from the hooks, suspended from the ceiling
[For the sake of simplicity - we'll say that the Init will be Butcher, PC1, 2, 3, 4? Butcher opens the encounter with his hook]
As you look around the room, you hear a gurgling voice; "Mmmrrr... Fresh Meat!" And footsteps, and the sound of a chain dragging over the stone floor announces the presence of a beast. As you watch, a hulking demon, that looks like it has been sewn together, emerges from the darkness - in one hand, another meat hook, like the ones hanging from the ceiling, and a huge cleaver. Before you can blink, the beast roars and flings the hook in your direction!
07:22
so @Nyoze , you taking 2 chars too? you have any other preference aside from the fighter (btw, go ahead, I'll make a ranger)
ranger and... idk XD maybe sorc?
Ben
Ben
@daze413 Sounds good. It's one of the intended classes anyway
I'll grab a pally, give me a sec :)
That way we've got the full range
if it's all the same, I'd like a Wizard instead
2nd-level is just about the sweet spot for Wiz
Ben
Ben
Ok
All right, I'm ready :O
Ben
Ben
07:27
Just figure out who's 1, 2, 3 and 4 :)
uhh, we're doing point buy right?
Ben
Ben
For stats? Sure, If that's easiest
ok, got the Wizard. And I'm pretty sure the stats for the ranger already in my app was generated with point buy so im good
whats the deal with spell slots here? Do we assume some of them are expended?
Ben
Ben
Let's say 1/4
expended. still have 3/4
so Wizard has 2/3, while Ranger has 1/2
07:32
Pally has 1/2, okay :)
oh and I'll be picking the dirtiest school, Divination
do we assume 1/2 uses of the feature?
Ben
Ben
The feature?
Portent
the one where I can change a die
lemme roll that now...
d20
naisu
though I wouldve wanted it to be a 1 or something
07:34
d20
ok, I'm ready
So, question.
Ben
Ben
answer
My Half-Elf figher knows the True-Strike cantrip, but doesn't say what type of action it is to use it.
Can I true-strike then attack in the same turn?
07:35
no, True Strike is lame like that :p sorry
QQ All right lol
Ben
Ben
It's a standard action
52
Q: Why would I ever cast True Strike?

MinimanOne of my players has complained several times that True Strike is a useless spell. The effect of True Strike is: On your next turn, you gain advantage on your first attack roll against the target, provided that this spell hasn't ended. His argument is that casting True Strike takes your ac...

^ haha
That makes more sense now lol
ok, Im ready
Enter Reeve (ranger) and Wellard (Wizard)
07:38
So am I. You go first with your 2 daze, then I'll go?
Ben
Ben
So, you wanna alternate? Daze, Nyoze, Daze, Nyoze?
let's roll initiative?
Init works.
Brakt (Half-Orc Pally) (Init:19)
d20
Then, when you roll initiative with the Pally, ill give you the 19 die
07:40
Greg (High Elf) Fighter (Init: 4)
d20
oh, yeah, there you go... instead of 4, I foresaw that you acted first
:O you sure?
yeah,
That works :D
07:40
R;W
2d20
thats R18, W14
Ben
Ben
So I have Init:
Butcher
Pally
Ranger
Wizard
Fighter
Yup :D
that moment you realize that a 2nd level ranger is super weak
07:42
Got a map? :P
Ben
Ben
Nah. Big square room, 60 ft across
ok game, butcher goes first
Ben
Ben
d4
Ben
Ben
The hook flies at the Fighter! Dex check
Also, the room is dimly lit, if that makes a difference for anyone
07:45
Got darkvision on both of my characters anyway :O
Does 5e have flatfooted rules?
1d20
Ben
Ben
Not that I know of
Either or, failed anyway
Greg the fighter tries to dodge... Right into the path of the hook!
No, I foresaw this happening!
:O
Man, yay for wizards
Ben
Ben
07:46
The hook flings over your shoulder, then is tugged hard, as the butcher yanks you across the room! (4 damage)
no, actually spent all of the portent charges
Ah, snap. Boo for wizards.
like, how far? >30 feet? 60 ft?
Ben
Ben
He is in the middle of the room, so 30ft
Such devastating force! The force of devilry!
Ben
Ben
07:48
Now it's the Pally
Butcher is in the middle of the room?
Or the far side?
Ben
Ben
@Nyoze Actually yeah, make it 40 ft
Reeve: I was gonna say spread out, but I guess we don't have to worry about that...
I'm in say... F4, which means Butcher would be F2:G3?
Give or take?
Ben
Ben
I take it you have an excel open? haha
07:50
Nah, all in my head :O
we could use my map doc
I think I have a square room here
Ben
Ben
You have all entered in the middle of one side of the room, the Butcher is 40 ft across from you, on the opposite side of the room. The fighter is now over there with im
hey, it's even named diablo
what a coincedence
its 10 feet wider and longer though
Ben
Ben
@daze413 Close enough :)
there, it's the exact size now... and i sealed off all the zombies from entering
07:53
Brakt watches as Greg is flung across the room, and takes a moment to prepare himself, as he draws forth his Halberd.
Move: Draw Halberd. Action: Cast Heroism. At the start of each turn, Brakt gains +2 temporary HP for 10 rounds.
Poor Zombies. they just wanted to dance.
End
Ben
Ben
Ranger
i STARRED THE init
woops caps
Question. Isn't the Butcher large, so takes 4 squares?
Ben
Ben
@Nyoze True
I'll cast Hunters Mark on him, strafe to the south, hugging the wall, while shooting an arrow
d20
07:54
14
d8 d6
5
thats 13 damage
uhh 8 non-magical, 5 magical
Ends Reeve's turn
Greg the fighter looks down at his rapier and shrugs.
Ben
Ben
As the arrow sinks into the Butcher's chest, he looks down, then back up at the ranger. He roars, and you see his eyes glow red
07:57
come at me, you oaf... he says under his breath, secretly hoping the opposite
Wellard, seeing an opportunity, will cast Catapult... Is there anything that's loose around us? like a good size rock or some chains? or a hook? or a brazier?
Maybe a piece of meat hanging from one of the hooks?
Ben
Ben
@daze413 I'll say a hook
Just a loose one slung from the cieling
Wellard: "oooh, nice trick, let me try it bahaha!"
DC13 Dex ST
Ben
Ben
d20
Ben
Ben
07:59
so 4. Lol
hm, I didnt notice that XGTE reworked Catapult. I really should get that book
3d8
15 magical bludgeon damage
Ben
Ben
Nice
The Catapult spell was nerfed in XGTE. I guess it makes sense, it was super OP in EE
Ends. I'll stay put
is there like a hook stuck in him now? or did it just bounce off his head?
08:03
I'm going to assume, that being wandering around a dungeon, Greg would have his rapier drawn already?
Ben
Ben
@Nyoze Sure
@daze413 You said bludgeoning, so it just bounced off haha
oh aight haha
Greg turns towards the beast, raised his rapier high, and lunged towards his side with 2 quick thrusts.
1d20, 1d20
d20 d20
There we go...
d8
08:05
7
Butcher takes 14 Piercing damage. End
Ben
Ben
The Butcher seems less perturbed by the Fighter's thrusts
Uhhhhh...
Wellard: I think we broke it
13+15+14 is 42HP :O
we did a pretty good number on it, yea
Ben
Ben
08:11
Wait... my go? Lol
Lost track
yaeh
Yeah :P
should be Butcher now
also you forgot to Legendary Action?
... or... did you?
Ben
Ben
Or did I...
no, not Takei again
im still recovering...
Ben
Ben
08:13
@daze413 Hhahaha
The butcher, glowing from the inside looks down at the fighter, and roars as it swings its cleaver
d20
Ben
Ben
23 for a hit? @Nyoze
oof!
pretty sure that hits in this level
Ben
Ben
2d6
08:14
owie
Ben
Ben
Ayeeee.... 14
well, you're not dead...
Oh damn :O
AC is 17, so yeah.
I feel like you can really just crank this guy up to CR3
Ben
Ben
(that was actually a 25 too, btw)
08:16
Greg drops to the ground unconscious
wait what
oh right... you took some damage from the hook
Ben
Ben
ohyeah...
14 is enough for exactly 0hp lol
But! Pally too the rescue!
Ben
Ben
End
Pally has next
Reeve: You take care of... I forgot his name. I'll keep this guy down.
08:19
Brakt, seeing Greg dropped by the mighty blow, rushes to his friends Aid!
Move: Move 30 ft. Action: Lay on Hands, heal Greg for 10.
End
Now, Greg is wake but Prone?
Ben
Ben
The butcher roars! He charges across the room at the Wizard, still enraged by the hook that smashed him in the skull
(DC12 dex save from Pally)
And wizard
d20
And fighter as well?
08:20
15
17 total
d20
Ben
Ben
@Nyoze Nah, he's unconscious isn't he?
that depends
08:21
Lay On Hands would wake him up? Maybe?
if the charge happened before or after pally's turn?
if after, he's conscious but prone
Ben
Ben
After
and im pretty sure prone has disadvantage on Dex STs
Ben
Ben
ok. Disadvantage then, right? (not that it matters)
d20
08:22
10
ah no, theres no disadvantage
Ben
Ben
Total?
So, Fighter is trampled over and takes 6.
Pally and Wizard make the save
Ben
Ben
Yup
Total was 4+2=6, but just rolling again to see if he got lower.
Ben
Ben
08:23
right
And Butcher has... 3hp left, but the Paladin wanted to help the fighter instead of killing it, because he's stupid :P
so do we see that the butcher is stunned?
Ben
Ben
@Nyoze How do you suppose that?
3hp left? Or Pally is stupid?
Ben
Ben
@daze413 I've removed that for now. If it's OP I'll add it back in
08:24
Oh, he's got 90HP now.
I was still thinking he had 45, my bad :)
@Ben ah, good idea
So, Rangers turn
ok, so no stun... The Ranger will strafe to the east, and fire an arrow
d20
Ben
Ben
AC13
08:26
13 to hit?
ooh just barely...
d8 d6
2
9 damage. 5 mundane, 4 magical
Ends
Wizard will hold out both his hands and cast Shocking Grasp
Ben
Ben
@daze ?
08:31
24 to hit
Ben
Ben
yup
damage
and ill move away
Ben
Ben
Flat 8?
08:34
yeap lightning damage
Thats... 60 Damage so far.
sorry bout that. we're doing office renovation. and no one is office renovating-planning
Ben
Ben
Awesome. @Nyoze you're up
@daze413 all g
That's helpful :O
I basically tazed the butcher and ran
Ben
Ben
08:36
Oh, did you disengage?
no, shocking grasp takes away your reaction
so you cant OA
Ben
Ben
Ahhh.. tricky
Greg picked himself up off the ground, and grabbed his Rapier, taking a moment to gather his composure.
Move: Stand. Action:Pick up Rapier, Bonus: Second Wind
1d10
End
08:37
pick up rapier is free tho
Is it?
Huh
you can still move 15ft and attack
Wait. Standing only takes half of your move?
Ben
Ben
Yeah
08:38
Wow...
Ben
Ben
So you have half your move and your action
Greg picks himself and his rapier off the ground, dusts himself off, and launches himself at the Butcher!
yeah, prone is a pretty weak condition unless you capitalize on it right away
And I can use Action Surge every turn, right?
once per short rest
Ben
Ben
08:39
Once
Ahh
d20
wait, you only have 15 feet move
I think you moved too far
Ben
Ben
Yeah, you were 40 feet away
My bad >_>
Greg positions himself between the butcher and the Paladin, ready for whatever comes next.
End
08:40
You still have an action... you could use dodge or ready it
or dash up to him
actuall, dashing seems like a poor choice XD the way that nasty charge works, anyone in melee will get hit XD
Ben
Ben
True. Gives you your movement, so You'll be standing next ot the butcher
But he has used charge already this round
or... has he?
Oh, that's an idea :O
Greg readies an action to strike the butcher if in range.
Now end.
idk, I just feel like being in melee with him is more dangerous. better to keep like 10 feet away
Okay, Butcher's turn
@Ben
08:53
the way CHARGE is currently working, with a large 10ft-wide line, you can hit 2 people at any given time. This should bump up the butcher to CR3, which I was gonna suggest you do anyway
this is really interesting when I see mechanics work differently than expected XD
Ben
Ben
You want to stay there @nyoze?
Yup
Protect the Pally with the reach weapon lol
Probably not the best idea, but hey
Oh damn, I just looked at the time :\ I've got to head off in 5 :(
Ben
Ben
In that case, give me a dc12 dex save, as the butcher charges at the Wizard!
08:56
phew
i also have to start heading off, I could put it off for a few minutes though
I'll be back on tomorrow if we want to continue then?
Ben
Ben
The butcher reaches the opposite side of the room, and you all see him visibly relax. He turns to face the wizard, and moves 30 feet toward him
Tomorrow I'll be preoccupied sorry.
does he attack?
Ben
Ben
At this stage, since the butcher activated bloodlust, you got him down to 53/90
d20
09:00
15
Fighter actually passed the save! :P
Ben
Ben
With the cleaver
wait wait
Ben
Ben
D20
09:00
so 9... if I assume +5, I can Shield that
Ben
Ben
15
SHIELD!!!
Ben
Ben
So no hit?
I bring up my hands just in time to bring up a barrier
AC became 17 for a round
1 more spell slot
Ben
Ben
Nice
09:02
wait actually
ah, yeah, even with mage armor 15 hits
all right, I'm off
Cya!
see ya!
ill be off too, I guess
see ya, Ben! That was an interesting bout so far :D
