Q: My government (China) cancelled my passport. I'm in Malaysia, what can I do?

user131096My government (China) cancelled my passport. I'm in Malaysia. What can I do? Reason of the cancellation: I posted a tweet saying EAT MY ASS while tagging a government institution. I mean I don't know for sure this was the reason but I can't think of anything else. I guess China wants me to be stu...

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Did you post the tweet from an account with your real name? When did you leave China? If it is within the past 6 months or so, what did you tell exit immigration as your purpose of visit? They might have cancelled it if they discovered you exited China for a non-essential purpose. You may be eligible for secondary protection for political reasons, but not necessarily for violating pandemic controls (however unreasonable their measures may be).
Not real name but I used my wifi without VPN. I guess they got my name from the ISP. -- Non essential travel ban was lifted before I left so there were no issues while exiting
It is extremely unlikely that they can obtain name from a foreign ISP (at least for a trivial tweet). The non essential travel ban is still in place since May. Have you contacted the Chinese consulate or your local police in China regarding the reason? If it is political reason they will likely avoid answering directly, otherwise they will tell you at least the general reason. It is also possible someone may have reported your passport number as lost or damaged mistakenly.
It was a local ISP. I sent the tweet a while ago while I was in China. I contacted my local police in China and they avoided telling me anything so I guess it is political
You cannot access Twitter without VPN in China.

How exactly did you "realize your passport was cancelled"? Is Malaysian immigration actively refusing to let you fly back to China, and if so, what did they tell you to do?
@xngtng ohh right I forgot I was using my browser's VPN extension. Then I suppose Twitter gave them info about my account. Idk
@lambshaanxy At the airport they said the passport is cancelled so they didn't let me fly (I wasn't gonna fly to China) They said I should contact my government
What were your intentions regarding returning home to China before your passport was cancelled?
No particular intention. I was just gonna keep traveling
@user131096 Who is "they", the airline or Malaysian immigration?
I don't know anything, but is there a possibility of the Republic of China recognizing you as a citizen and allowing you into Taiwan?

Would you prefer to be forever stuck in PRC or forever stuck outside PRC?
Anyone would prefer to be forever stuck outside of PRC. Outside of PRC means the entire world except China.
This calls to mind the opening lines of "The Martian".

Definitely seek asylum. You don't want to enter the country that bans you from travel from insulting it's institutions.
But how exactly? What would be the waiting time? Being stuck in Malaysia for 10 years could be worse than being stuck in China my whole life. In China, at least I have friends and family
@user131096: You could request asylum from any other country that you think makes sense. The presentation of limited duration in Malaysia combined with unlikly grant from Malaysia looks like needs asylum somewhere else.

@user131096 ’ I was just gonna keep traveling’ That’s ultimately going to become harder & harder to do, even if your passport remained valid and you just travel to countries that you can enter visa-free. Sooner or later an immigration official is going to ask about how you’re earning a living while travelling, for example, and/or how you are able to spend long periods out of China
Good luck......

@Traveller I think what he meant was to keep travelling until eventually he returns home.

@Neinstein Well yes, of course, however it is not that easy to be a nomad indefinitely
