@gerrit I don't know about you, but academics in Australia are not being selected for being workaholics. We value very much our free time and 9 to 5.
@uhoh we're going to submit a paper to Science Advances soon.. wish us luck
@Jean-MariePrival I recently finished my PhD, and now I have a postdoc at the same place. I didn't apply for any job. I made my own job. I managed to convince people that my skills are worthwhile for them to fund a postdoc in the same place I did my PhD.
Which turned out great - now we don't have to move the kids or a house.
It's not long term, but long enough to potentially prove the case for a permanent position. Permanent positions are rare, but if you bring in more money than the position costs, it's a no brainer.

My lab has a policy of not taking it's own Ph.D. students as postdocs.
Of course it's informal, not written anywhere (they could probably be sued for discrimination if so...)
And volcanology is no like economic geology, we just cost money, we don't bring any, we just bring knowledge!
And there are not many volcanology labs, mine is the only in France, then you have to move to Italy, UK, US, Japan, New Zealand...
Which is kind of appealing, but challenging with a family. I'd rather stay where I live and switch field.
I've done other things before so I'm not too worried, I'll find something. But for now, I need to focus on wrapping up my thesis rather than making plans! :)

@Gimelist Then I certainly wish you well! You generated the @uhoh by clicking on my meteorites post, but my guess is that it's not related to those?
Or is it?

It's my 3rd highest upvoted question network-wide.
@Gimelist Good, and good luck!
