The bottom was never properly isolated from the rock, and I don't think the casing survived the conditions for 30 years

So whatever fluids probably precipitated minerals along the hole. Imagine a 10 km long geode!

And they plugged everything. Gas could be coming out, depending on the oxidation state in the bottom. I think He is probably abundant, and others depending on how much oxygen is there.

So their control speciation of H and C (to CH4, CO2, H2O, H2, etc)
