@gerrit how did I pick extra 1000 points in reputation ??? I went to sleep last night 4089 and I woke up with 5199 points.
How did this happen ?

In my very first blog post, I wrote about what a personal experience taught me about the Stack Overflow community. I said we were going to step back and re-evaluate how we deliver feedback, how we can improve content quality, and how we can reduce friction between people. I said that our goal is to have the question asking process be painless and beneficial for new people and Stack Overflow veterans alike.

During this re-evaluation period, we noticed something in our reputation reward system. We give anyone who receives an upvote on an answer ten additional reputation points, but only give five reputation points to people who receive an upvote on a question.  …

Ok i see where we are going with this
fantastic !!!!

@Gimelist Hey remember that time i was talking about a tsunami hitting ESSE because some user quit ESSE and i lost like 60 points and you said " like i care" and you also said " you will get it back within days" well some predictions do come true. all of questions points rep got turned into answer point rep overnight !!!
@Fred sorry I did not see your comment for days. The IOD is still going strong bom.gov.au/climate/enso/monitoring/iod1.png
for your monsoon to begin IOD has to decrease

@gansub I'm happy you now have extra 1000 points. I still do not care how many points you or me or any other person has :)
and my rep seems to be rising very slowly now, because people stopped asking questions about hard rock geology
it's mostly climate now (which is a good thing! it's important!)
but I feel like my high rep is more of a legacy thing at the moment

@Gimelist Take two on those. Even I care a jot for rep. The satisfaction is in helping somebody with with understanding a problem in earth science
But i mean i am just saying something to keep the chat window going like it was in sabretooth days
by the way i think reputation should not be visible and only people with rep greater than 1000 should downvote
i remember a guy who used to downvote for fun i mean for no reason at all.

10:06 AM
@gansub the satisfaction is there regardless of rep. Some of my own favourite answers were upvoted once or twice, and some of my top-voted answers are actually pretty crap (just happened to be on the SE hot questions so lots of visibility)
@gansub sabretooth was so bizarre. he was just awkward here... the kind of people you understand there is some underlying issue (asperger's?) but don't know how to handle it

10:22 AM
right i second that @Gimelist
the really mathematical answers nobody bothers to upvote but they are accepted by OP
so that is great satisfaction

10:38 AM
@Gimelist If you remember about sabre he was the first to crack 10000 rep
in just 5 months i think

actually I don't - I don't look at that

he was weird because he always spent his time here
but it does say something about his talent
cracking 10000 in 5 months is no mean feat

I have the impression it was easier to get rep several years ago

just look at his past questions and answers.

2014, 2015 - I would easily get 5 to 10 upvotes for crap answers
now barely anything
but I could just be remembering those more than I remember the no-vote answers

10:41 AM
yes but look at his question and answer quality
i mean he was an expert in volcanoes i think

yes, they were good
he would research a topic if he didn't know something

i mean his rep was well deserved

I wonder where he is from, he was from Australia if I remember correctly

yes Brisbane

he could be my neighbour and I wouldn't know lol
oh brissy? ok that's far from here

10:42 AM
no you are at Canberra

yep
@gansub talent is not enough. we have an honours student here who is super smart and amazing and brilliant and everything. but he is the worst person ever

at your univ ?

yep

hard to combine super talent with humility

@gansub the two are unrelated. we have some extremely talented people, and some are rather humble

10:57 AM
few i know can but in general i have yet to meet somebody who has sustained it for long

we have several royal society fellows, agu fellows, etc etc they're all very smart and very nice as well
ok not all. some are jerks, but most are ok

say been to a AGU meeting in the US ?

11:20 AM
@gansub never has been, and there are other conferences I prefer going to

@Gimelist same here but in my field it is apparently the marquee conference to go to
i prefer conferences in my continent i.e. Asia

@gansub Are you going to IGC Delhi?

no
i am in meteorology rememebr
maybe the 2021 version of this - rivadelgardacongressi.it/en/MS/ICAM-2019
i am guessing @gerrit went to that conference in Italy

12:01 PM
@gansub Nah, I just come from EUMETSAT MTG User Preparation days eumetsat.int/website/home/Satellites/FutureSatellites/…
I'm not involved with alpine meteorology.
Although I did last month visit MeteoSvizzera in Locarno

12:54 PM
that is just MeteoSwiss in Italian

1:08 PM
@gansub So it is. Their regional office for the Southern Swiss Alps and Engadine, plus their Italian language centre.
I've been once to AGU and once to EGU.
I prefer smaller meetings with between 25 and 200 people.

1:28 PM
@Gimelist The number of posts on ES SE is steadily increasing, but the number of votes seems to be roughly constant.
And even reducing a bit.

@gerrit yes i saw that from the analytics for the first time today
interesting stuff

Q: Please vote for quality content

gerritWhen we started this site in 2014, we encouraged everyone to vote early and often, and people did. Now this site is not young anymore. In the past 5 years, we have seen a steady increase in the number of active users, page views, and posts. Unfortunately, this has not been accompanied by an in...
