@trogdor (that's also one of the reasons I am quite scared thinking about what G5 could end up with)
Also, just for once, this has something to do with RPG.
Long ago, in the MLP show there was a reference to tabletop RPG (well, more than one actually but long story short). It ended up with scenes like this one:
Recently, a rumor about a "MLP and D&D crossover toy" spread on the web.
I was hoping for figures taken from said episode.
We... got this instead.
...........
I won't comment.
At least, it is guess the classes time.
Mage, bard, rogue, druid and barbarian?
I think the central one probably is intended to be a druid.

I feel like you have a better understanding of the concepts than whoever made those figures :P

@V2Blast don't take me for a MLP expert. I only know G4 - the "Friendship is Magic" one. I know there are 3 more "generations" before, with different shows and character designs - and that G1 is considered the "best" among the first three (so, before G4) because is the one that was more fantasy and less "for girls" stereotype-ridden. That said, the pre G4 art style... I don't really like it to be honest.
Anyway, just saying this because for some reason the toys in the figure are based on the G1 artystyle - at least from the comments I read. Don't know why.
Furthermore... want to know the best part?
There is an official tabletop RPG, made by River Horse (the ones who made the Labyrinth board game that I think was once mentioned here, probably by either @BESW or the room feeds)
IMHO it would have been a far more profitable move to tie the figure set to that, especially since the Starter Pack apparently already contains some "character tokens".
(That said, afaik Tails of Equestria is far more Fate oriented than D&D)

@Derpy gasp!

@AndrasDeak Think I said it before. I just like G4 probably because it is more of a slice of life, friendship based one. In a way, it has an "anime" felling to it. I don't know what came before, but I heard that there was some heavy "female stereotype" involved. G1 MAY be the exception (never seen it) because from what I know originally Hasbro had it mind to market MLP toys at boys too.
But again, I'm not the right one to ask.

@Derpy You already know way more than me about MLP :P
