A song of my people: youtube.com/watch?v=3WrTZGwXOMU
Or not actually song because there's no lyrics... I think I found this guitar version way back and didn't remember at all how good it was.
The original is considerably more orchestral

Hello

@kviiri this was really nice!

@Gwideon Hiya!

how are you?

@NautArch I recommend listening to the original too, lemme get you a link...

2:55 PM
@kviiri and we're getting some light snow here right now. So...appropriate?

@NautArch Kiutaköngäs is just the name of some rapids I'm-not-exactly-sure-where, but whoever chose the pics for the video seems to agree that it is a wintery tune :)
@Gwideon Fine thanks, doing the last commits for Friday before setting off towards our relatives out of town
@NautArch And yes, it's one of my favorite tunes <3

nice

@kviiri weird, that album doesn't seem available on US spotify.
I've got their orchestra, but not that album.

Aw :(
I've some good jazz too if you're interested

@kviiri sure!

3:05 PM
I already lined this elsewhere, but... "Baltimore Todolo" by Martin Spitznagel, Brian Holland and Danny Coots
Martin Spitznagel is one of those ragtime pianists who never fails to put a smile on my face because he seems to genuinely enjoy every performance to the fullest.

love me some ragtime

Aye!
Same here! I have a very broad taste in music but ragtime is the genre I love playing.

I've just recently gotten back into playing music.
Just jamming with some friends, no sheet music (and i'm the only one who can actually read music anyway)

Cool, what do you play? I think you mentioned piano once?
I am no good at jamming, myself. Should get some practice with that

clarinet
I did piano when I was a kid, but that skill is long gone.

3:13 PM
I play piano. used to play guitar and cello but that was a long time ago

Our group is a bass player (who also has one of hte moog synthesizer things), guitarist, and one of the box drum things.
It's an eclectic sound :P
But we have fun
I definitely need to work on my scales, though.
At one point last session we were all playing and I just couldn't follow. There was no consistent rhythm and I was lost.
Stopped everyone and apologized and their response "Oh, we had no rhythm"
:(
The bass player was leading on that one, so I had him start back up and knocked out a rhythm so he'd follow it. Got better after that.

@NautArch Wow, like Benny Goodman!

@kviiri I wish :)
I keep finding myself doing the same rhythms a lot. Trying to expand on that (and why I want to work on scales.)

re: eclectic sounds, at one point the best jazz pianist of Finland had a trio consisting of himself, an electric guitarist and a beatboxer.

also seems like we play the same keys most songs, so it's hard to mix it up. I don't really know the keys/scales, but I end up finding the same notes that sound right.
I also have a sticky key that a local place failed to fix, so that's been frustrating, too.

3:23 PM
I've been meaning to brush up on my melodica

@NautArch yeah instruments not working can be so frustrating. the middle E key on my piano won't play anything unless I hit the key really hard and even then the note is super quiet.

@Gwideon I generally find myself staying in the lower or upper register so I dont' worry about it.
(it's the register key that sticks)

oof

I originally got the melodica because I wanted to translate my piano skills into a very portable instrument, but it puts the people in the mood for some definitely-not-serious jolly fun so well I'm appreciating it as an object in itself beyond mere substitute
I also have an accordion but that's hard yo

just got to the ragtime three's company theme...HA!

3:32 PM
On the album "Handful of Keys" (spotify) Spitznagel has arrangements of a few popular evergreen rags but also a Mary Poppoins Medley, and some music from Super Mario, Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda.

1 hour later…
4:39 PM
um hey

Sup

Um i decided to take my writing stuff here to avoid clogging up general chat

@Gwideon Hey, if it starts getting more lengthy, definitely post here (or alternatively post a link to the text), but otherwise you posted two lines of text, that is very far from being annoying

actually nevermind I'll just post the link
god why am I so nervous

@Gwideon because writing is personal :)
But seriously, I would very much recommend working on a for a bit without feedback.

4:48 PM
feed back is helpful for me though. It let's me know I'm on the right track

writing isn't something that really works with immediate committee feedback for every line - line by line or paragraph by paragraph isn't how a work can be properly evaluated

@Gwideon I know, and if it works for you, that's awesome. But writing is a long process. Trying to circumvent with constant feedback may not actually be the most helpful thing. And you also want to time to work, rework, rework again. Sharing first drafts isn't helpful for or you those trying to help.

@NautArch true. Um I probably won't post again until I'm done with it but um feedback on the start is useful for me as it gives me the confidence to stop questioning myself and just write
sorry

@Gwideon just stepping away from the process to ask may be detrimental. And no more apologizing! :)

okay

4:52 PM
You really should just sit down and give yourself at least an hour to work on it.
That time can be in writing new content or in revising current. But stop/start takes you out of the process, which may end up hurting you. Especially when you're just trying to start and having issues doing so.

yeah. I'm just unsure i guess

And that's part of it. But you have to trust yourself and doing it is another exercise in building trust with yourself.

yeah
it's really not that good. I'm not good enough to write this.

@Gwideon You ARE good enough to write this.
But good writing doesn't just happen and that's often hard to internalize.
Trust yourself and trust in the process. And trust that when you are ready to share a more complete and edited piece that the feedback is to help you improve.
It may not be sunshine and roses feedback, but that's still okay and will help you in writing better.
:52484163 You have your start that you posted. It's a good start! Just keep going :)

5:09 PM
okay

5:29 PM
I'm better at writing scripts than I am at writing stories I guess. I never have this much trouble with scripts.
anyways i guess I'll just keep trying to write this

It takes a while to learn, either way :) keep practicing if you want to get good

true

3 hours later…
8:21 PM
Ahhh, west coast, here we are.
Or former coast. I think we're driving on what was still ocean a few hundred years ago. Yay post-glacial rebound!
I reckon it's a few dozen kilometers to the actual shoreline.

GcL
9:01 PM
@kviiri You can't rebound on a glacier. They'll dunk on you like your a Greenland.

3 hours later…
11:39 PM
lol
