6 hours later…
10:28 AM
hi.
since I posted a short debut trailer about this game some time ago...
here is a new one
oh, also seems the Paranoia videogame will be released on 29th November.
Don't know it it will be good.

oh this thing
huh, so I guess it's sort of got rpg combat elements?

10:59 AM
@trogdor Paranoia or Void?
Paranoia... I don't know much about. One old trailer I saw somehow reminded me of Baldurs Gate interface
Void... a dungeon crawler with Tamagotchi elements
Reminds me of Pandora Towers in a way.
But it also has that Made in Abyss felling.
And I sincerely hope it does not go Abyss.

11:16 AM
@Derpy void

@trogdor The good new is that apparently Akihito Tsukushi wasn't involved in any way.

3 hours later…
2:15 PM
@Derpy oh nice! I'll be very curious to see how it turns out.

2:25 PM
@Rubiksmoose wait, probably the news source I read before wasn't really up-to-date. Steam has a generic 2020 date. Let me check
Nope, the source was right.
And it is even closer
Nov, 14th
> 🚨Red alert Troubleshooters!🚨

Following the theft of the game's code by filthy traitors, the release of Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory is compromised!

As requested by Friend Computer, the new release date is November 14, 2019.

#HappinessIsMandatory
so, either steam is wrong or there is a new yet unannounced delay and steam already knows.

hello

Hi

2:43 PM
it's sad when game code get's stolen. A lot of times it's an inside job which means one of the team members took it and um yeah.

@Gwideon I think they just meant that they had to delay the launch to fix some bug.

oh
i'm dumb

the "theft" part is probably just role playing the role of Friend Computer and not a real fact.
at least, I assume it's not real. Could be wrong.
see below:
> On a more serious note, we understand that this isn't the best news you wanted to see so close to the game's release, this is a difficult decision for us too. We want to take that extra time to make the player's experience better.

Thank you for your understanding.
basically "we delayed this to put some finishing touch"

okay. anyways my point about code theft still stands though it is less relevant

Not a really good date since Pokémon also releases that day, but ye know...

2:48 PM
yeah, it sucks.
eh

Probably two different markets.

I don't feel like Paranoia is really directly competing with pokemon games for attention

could also see people buying both.
@Carcer precisely.
That said, I will wait a few days to see some review or comments

apparently Disco Elysium is very good

@Carcer I've been listening to nearly-nonstop hype about it for a few years and I've yet to try it
I fear I'll experience some level of backlash

2:50 PM
on the other hand I know basically nothing about it so I can't possibly be tainted!
it's gotten very good reviews, at least

One of my friends was involved with the development as a sort of "external resource"
He's my source of the hype

but I will wait until it is a bit cheaper before I buy
ah, I see

@kviiri quote: This is FF7 of 2020 :P

also pokemon's core fanbase is kinda mad so I'm not sure how well the new ones will do

@Gwideon what are they mad about?

2:51 PM
@Derpy Implying things Friend Computer says are untrue is treason.

not having all the pokemon in the games

@Carcer last game mostly.

fwiw, in my experience I've never actually seen an angry fanbase translate to particularly affected sales or whatever

also sun and moon where pretty good. don't go dissing them (no one really counts the let's go games)

by and large it's a vocal minority of the base and even people who are grumpy are very bad at not buying the things

2:54 PM
Another song of my people: Myrskyluodon Maija as a solo kantele arrangement and some extra rhytmic spice. I've heard solo piano versions but this is new to me!

@Carcer not buying the "Let's go" games has been quite easy to be fair...

I was, like most of my generation here, briefly into Pokémon but I think its pseudo-openworld approach was a bit too noticeably constrained for me to really enjoy.
...later I realized I didn't like open worlds much either :>

3:41 PM
@kviiri I generally enjoy open worlds if they're done right but that can be hard to do

Yeah, there are many good ones out there.

GcL
4:09 PM
@Carcer Fallout 76 took a pretty big hit compared to Fallout 4
Heck, I'm not sure if Fallout 76 even did as well as New Vegas

4:21 PM
@Carcer My understanding is that the new games will be missing more than half of the Pokemon.
@Gwideon hey the let's go games were actually kinda fun

yeah but they're more of a spin off than a main series game

And I like some of the QoL improvements over the main series.

@GcL Fallout 76 is kind of a confluence of a lot of awfulness though

Being able to withdraw and deposit Pokemon to your box in the field is so good, I'm hesitant to step back from that.

like, if the new pokeymans games add microtransactions, I'd credit they probably will be very unpopular

GcL
4:25 PM
True. All of it pissed of the fans. On the upside, Wasteland2 sales went up.

Overworld encounters are better than RNG grass too, imo.

I'm mostly just worried umbreon won't be in the game. as long I have Umbreon I'm happy.

I'd have to look up the leaked list.
Looks like you're good, Umbreon's in green.
RIP literally every other starter except Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard though.

to be honest I can kind of see why the devs would want to start dropping stuff from that list.

Sure, but it's awkward to be cutting more than half of the roster literally the next game after you just said that you missed out on content for Sun/Moon because you were future-proofing your roster.

4:41 PM
that does sound awkward

Part of me hopes the leak is fake

@Carcer I'm surprised it took them this long
How refreshing to be talking about non-SE leaks BTW ;)
Just wait until the next Smash cuts so much of the roster...

oh that will be bad

one character (Mario) and about 200 DLC Mario outfits?

5:02 PM
@Rubiksmoose I'm not sure how much Sakurai wants to make another Smash. He was already visibly tired of the series leading up to Ultimate.
And having every previous Smash character on the roster seems like a really opportune time to end it.
At this point, they'd probably make decent cash just making balance fixes and releasing a new character every now and then.
If there's a new platform, just port Ultimate instead of making a new game.

@Yuuki I'm pretty sure there won't be another for a while, if ever. I think he's gone on record in saying that there was no plan to have Smash continue yet.
However, it is inevitable that it will eventually.

I thought it was inevitable that there'd be another F-Zero by now and look at the reality we live in.
So anyone here have fiber internet?

@Yuuki having to deal with so many companies could be problematic even for just a rerelease/ port. konami and square are known for not being cooperative when it comes to this stuff.

Looking at my options since I'm moving and... there's not a lot of options.

I have fiber

5:07 PM
ATT has fiber, but it's not in my area. Comcast has gigabit, but it's not fiber. Earthlink has fiber but also it has a ton of setup costs and I'm required to rent a modem from them.

it's pretty decent and the speeds are a bit faster but the stuff carrying to a house is still copper so the only ting that's fiber is what carries the signal from the main to the house/apartment. so yeah speed isn't really to different if the copper connection is decent enough.
just make sure you have ethernet ports so you can plug the important stuff directly in.
basically it's not worth it if the only advantage is the bit of extra speed.
also I feel sorry for you. Comcast is really horrible

I might have to go with Comcast/Xfinity due to lack of options. yay oligopoly.

I know a guy who does, but we live in the UK so that's probably not relevant to you.
FTTP, I mean. FTTC is pretty widespread.

Really all of the internet providers are pretty bad. their customer service sucks and they make you jump through a bunch of hoops to get anything besides giving them money very difficult

5:25 PM
yay oligopoly

@Gwideon the US has it pretty bad due to the prevalence of local monopolies

make internet access a utility already
i'm pretty sure it literally checks all the boxes

Hi again
Went for a bit of a walk to liven myself up a bit
@Yuuki Have you actually wondered why there are boxes in the first place, why just not one big lump of storage for your Pokemon? I have a theory, but no confirmed answer.

@kviiri Well, in Let's Go, it's one big lump of storage.
Which is also a plus.
But as to why there were boxes in previous games, I'm pretty sure it has to do with memory load and tech limitations.
And after that, it's just inertia.
GameFreak is notoriously bad at making innovations and progress.

Yes, tech. I don't think memory as much as saving speed --- the captured Pokémon data takes up the vast majority of the save space and the box solution means you only have to overwrite a particular part of it when saving
my SO recently re-did the first and second gens while I loitered around watching, hence me pondering the subject.

5:39 PM
I think it was around Gen 3 or 4 when moving Pokemon between boxes became seamless and I started to wonder why boxes still existed.
Although I suppose it does help with organization, but that's something you can solve with tagging and such.
Granted, that means more things GameFreak would have to program. And GameFreak hates programming new things.

If you think about other stuff in Pokemon that varies by your progress, it takes up quite little space. Each NPC, field item, field Pokémon et cetera is one bit. I reckon it takes less space to store the entire world state than it does to store just one's active party.
Okay, seems like I'm onto something, the game save is organized into four banks: one is the Hall of Fame which only needs to be updated when the game is won, two contain the boxes that only need to be updated when boxes are switched, so you'll only need to actually write the main block when saving.

various bits including the hall of fame, but yeah.

Well yes, it seems to also contain sprite buffers but that's not really save game stuff

fair enough.

2 hours later…
8:11 PM
hey

8:39 PM
hello

how are you

So apparently, the new film Midway has an ending card dedicating the film to both American and Japanese soldiers. Which, if this review is right and the movie spends a good amount of time demonizing the Japanese military, is quite a bit of an ask.

@Gwideon pretty good, how about you?

tired
just so tired
@Yuuki that sounds... hypocritical

@Gwideon Welcome to Hollywood!

8:53 PM
:/

I mean, I get annoyed at the barrage of "Hollywood is a den of scum and villainy" comments myself, but you can't ignore that the place is a machine.

yeah it is. while there is some creativity that comes from it it also suppresses alot of creativity

I mean, yeah Hollywood isn't exclusively bad but,.... they still deserve to be called out for the BS they churn out too XD

I mean, it's also not to say that the Japanese military didn't get up to some heinous f--kery, but it's really really weird to allegedly (since I haven't seen the film myself) portray them as black-and-white villains but then also "both sides" the ending card.

@Yuuki Ken Burns' documentary was pretty damning on that front, too

9:00 PM
I don't particular like hollywood's self congratulatory nature cough the oscarscough

@Gwideon Ah, when the best film of the year is about the heartfelt message that really, racism is everyone's fault so black people should be nice too.

I know we talked about this before, but that's every major award show. THe only that's maybe different is the sag awards where the actors pick. And they're drunk.

I'm pretty sure the fact that If Beale Street Could Talk wasn't even nominated in the same year that The Green Book won Best Picture is grounds for bringing the Academy up on charges of crimes against humanity.

i'm honesty kinda glad award shows are dying
snubbing the lego movie. I know it's a movie about legos but it was a really freaking good movie

Best Animated Feature is literally just the "What Disney/Pixar Made This Year" Award.

9:06 PM
yep unless they didn't make anything good that year in which dreamworks wins.

"What Disney/Pixar Made This Year And What Miyazaki Made This Year If They Didn't Make Anything".

actually no it should be "did dreamworks make a HYTYD movie this year"
I love those movies but dreamworks makes stuff other than those movies

@Gwideon not really because neither 1 nor 2 won when they were nominated.
Toy Story 3 won against HTTYD 1 and Big Hero 6 won against 2.
First one is arguable, I think Toy Story 3 is legitimately better than HTTYD 1. But I don't think Big Hero 6 should've won against 2. But I also didn't think 2 should've won that year either if BH6 wasn't in the running.

true. also while I do like Big hero 6 I think HYTYD 2 was the better movie emotionally. also everyone knows why toy story 3 won

Song of the Sea was my pick for 2014.

9:10 PM
oh yeah I've heard that was really good

I didn't think it would win, but I think I should have.

also you know the oscars are bs when you haven't even heard of alot of the movies that have been nominated.

2017 was a bit of a weak year in animation, imo, but then again any year with The Emoji Movie would be a weak year.
I can't remember any viable contenders against Coco.

while I do understand indie stuff not being known. but alot of the stuff is by major studios
true. also Coco was really good.
also I am glad into the spiderverse won the oscar that it deserved (probably because they knew there would be literal riots if it didn't win)

@Gwideon Yeah, I'm an admitted Disney fanboy myself and I would've rioted if The Incredibles 2 won.

GcL
9:13 PM
@Gwideon Sports games and murder are about the only things we actually riot over.

but yeah the oscars are crap but it is fun to watch in a train wreck sort of way

The first one was fantastic and it deserved the Oscar it won, but the second one just wasn't up to snuff.

I do like disney. but I miss their 2d stuff

Thankfully, the lead-in animated short, Bao, was well worth the price of admission alone.

i liked the 2nd one but I know it's not as good.
basically if a movie is entertaining to me It's a success in my book. basically thats the whole reason venom was successful

9:16 PM
I'm still not really sure what the narrative of the second one was even about. The first one was about a dysfunctional family bonding over superheroics and the second one is... also about that?
shrugs

anyways um while we're on movies can I voice a grievance with the star wars fanbase and they're fundamental misunderstanding of the last jedi's message

GcL
That's the one where the message is it's sometimes okay to burn down a cool old library that looks like a tree?

The Star Wars fanbase and dramatically missing the point, name a more iconic duo.
Generally speaking, audiences seem to have trouble with any plot where the villain espouses a belief and it's not directly refuted.

GcL
Peanut better and jelly (time)

alot of the begrieved fans believe the movies message is that you should kill the past but that's not what it's message is. It portrays that view point as childish and wrong. It's actual message is that you need to respect the past but recognize it's flaws and move on from it. Lukes whole problem is that he's stuck in the past. Rey is willing to learn form the past which is why she takes the books from the tree library.

9:23 PM
Or even if it is directly refuted (see: The Dark Knight).

It is refuted. Look at how kylo ren acts throughout that movie.

GcL
@Gwideon I don't know. I thought it was the link between the ghouls & ghosts and ghost & goblins franchises. Yoda was obviously a goblin who became a ghost.

By "directly refuted", I mean someone says "you're wrong" and then they prove the villain wrong.

he's portrayed as a child who's lashing out blindly (which does fit with his characterization)

Which is literally what happens in The Dark Knight, but there's still tons of Joker memes out there.

9:25 PM
@Yuuki Luke does that's the whole point of the saber duel on kryat

GcL
@Gwideon Wasn't the blind jedi actually in Rogue One?

iamonewiththeforceandtheforceiswithme

also starwars has never been realistic. If it was then x wings wouldn't fly through space like planes so why are we complaining about shots arcing in space (which is a very minor detail). god I love starwars but the fandom is so.... awful sometimes

GcL
@Yuuki Yeah. I liked that character

@GcL He's a good character

GcL
9:28 PM
@Gwideon The physics of the space craft is what you'd pick as your first example?

i don't remember his name though

GcL
Churut I think
Cherot?

has a bag put over his head "Are you kidding me? I'm blind!"

GcL
Definitely not Cherub. Fine. I guess I'll have to watch the whole movie again.

@Yuuki that's my favorite line from rogue one
I honestly think disney has handled starwars just fine. also solo was a better movie than people give it credit for. yes it's unnecessary but isn't that true of all media

GcL
9:31 PM
Anything is better than Lucas for me. Everything after Empire was downhill.

they've made some mistakes yes but they're not the devil like some people like to portray them as.

GcL
Disney is the devil for a number of other reasons. Copyright is probably one of my first complaints.

big mouse gotta get those royalties

return of the jedi is actually pretty good especially the ending. Also i know the prequels aren't great but they hold a special place in my heart especially episode 3. also we got clone wars during the lucas era

GcL
@Carcer For reals.

9:34 PM
yeah disney is disney. they're an old company that's used to being in control of stuff. they will eventually have to adjust.
or die

GcL
@Gwideon Defeating the crack squad of the Galactic Empire's best troops with what was essentially the Care Bear Stare was great for the child viewers.... and that's about it.

@GcL but the duel between luke and vader. the pure emotion in that fight

GcL
@Gwideon Alternate option... just lobby hard for laws to preserve your monopoly. Worked in the past and works pretty well now.

actually it's not gonna happen this time
to much backlash

GcL
@Gwideon Yeah, laser sword fights are great. Cool laser sword fights didn't really do it for me story wise.

9:40 PM
@GcL it's less the fight and the character's emotions during the fight. seeing the shift in luke from calm determination to anger to a kind of rebellious spirit is interesting and quite emotional. I won't say that return of the jedi is perfect but it's better than some people say. Yes ewoks are dumb but jabba's palace, the space battle, and the duel between vader and luke are really good. wish we had the non special edition though.

GcL
@Gwideon Being tossed into a giant sand sphincter was also not a high point, but at least kind of interesting as adding to the fauna of the planet.

Jabba's palace is so good for worldbuilding and it's a good sequence.

GcL
@Gwideon You can get that. I had it transferred from VHS to DVD, but have subsequently found versions with better transfer quality.

I own all of the movies so I don't feel bad about obtaining the originals through less than legal means.
anyways. i just honestly wish the fans would stop beating people up for liking certain films in the series that they don't like. We're not the enemy we're just trying to enjoy the films just like you.

look up star wars despecialised

9:45 PM
okay

@Gwideon I highly recommend getting Harmy's Despecialized versions
ha @Carcer

jinx, eh

i couldn't remember 'despecialized' and kept searching for deharm

I do own the orignial versions of the prequels. but not of the originals. It's the 2005 special edition box set.
anyways I'll shut up

As far as the prequels go, they started too far back with Phantom Menace and had to skip a bunch in the middle as a result.
The first movie should've opened up with the climactic duel against Maul.

9:54 PM
Have you seen the what if the prequels were good series.

GcL
@Yuuki That might have been cool. Or they could have made the Heir to the Empire trilogy into movies.
All the actors would have been about the right age.

The movie should've been Obi-Wan adjusting the reality that he's been made a Knight far too soon and isn't mature enough (yet) to handle teaching a Padawan.
Also, remove the bit about the prophecy. Or if you have to keep it, leave it for the end of the movie.

[cough]
midichlorians

Honestly, midichlorians don't bother me as much as they do most people, but then again I had to grow up with them in existence.

GcL
I do dislike it when sci-fi authors feel the need to explain stuff that clearly did not need explaining to make a good story.

9:57 PM
They're not really that signifigant

I don't really have the lack of them to contrast with.

GcL
Like who cares how moisture vaporators work. We know Luke hates working on them. Moving on.

they're not really mentioned in any significant way after episode 1

GcL
Probably should have been a clue to Lucas that they weren't needed.

sure, they are ultimately totally meaningless except as a method for the jedi to realise anakin's going to be OP when he grows up

9:59 PM
@GcL remember we're viewing this in retrospect. lucas wasn't

GcL
@Carcer Could have skipped straight to that.
@Gwideon I'm pretty sure he had started writing those stories a long time before they were filmed.

but only a rough outline. he didn't really have any idea about the specifics.

ultimately he still made some pretty flawed movies
it's fine to enjoy them for what they are, but they make a lot of mistakes

anyways. I like the prequels though episode 2 is hard to watch. also the treatment of jake lyod after episode 1 is despicable

was he kid anakin?

10:06 PM
yeah

yeah, that was sad.

@Gwideon The Star Wars fanbase and doing despicable things, name a more iconic duo.

the poor kid was bullied and even received death threats from grown fricking adults. That's sad that a group of people thought it was okay to do that to a kid over a freaking movie.
@Yuuki this is part of the reason why eventhough I'm a fan of starwars I take little stalk in the fanbase itself

10:22 PM
Sorry I’ll shut up

10:35 PM
@Gwideon I'm chiming in just to say that please don't. Your perspective is welcome.
