The role of physics in society is expected to increase even more in the (near) future.

So apparently 0celo7 got banned for a year, for reasons unknown. I won't defend it without prior context of what the mods did, but I think this is the time to have a proper conversation between the mods and the users if the mods want us to take the bans seriously. Clearly a group of users (me included) thinks the bans are unnecessary, and therefore frequently joke about the overstretching of the Be Nice policy in the room. As I understand it, SE isn't happy about that.
But that means that a discourse is necessary if y'all want this policy to be successful.

lol wat...he got banned for a year....? that's harsh

Well, I don't know the context, so I can't judge that, is my stance. But I think we should know the context, if we want to avoid ourselves getting banned for a year.
Just to be clear on that.

I'm p sure he was suspended for a few days, and then that suspension was increased to a year

Yes.

vzn
0celo7, (1yr) RIP, along with duffield. but he is always pushing boundaries. he has a long history of chat suspensions, alas, theres a meta post on it by him. see both sides of this, think the sentence is too harsh but also the mods cannot be expected to endlessly hand out short sentences for infractions.

Srsly? @BalarkaSen @Phase

dumb af

if you had a quantity that spanned billions of orders of magnitude, maybe 2 orders of magnitude isn't that big of a difference anymore. mmmhm

kms

@JohnRennie you've said bannable things a lot of times before in the chat but did not get banned for them because you either deleted them afterwards or just didn't get flagged because you don't seem to have a lot of people here that want to eagerly flag you, combined with the fact that you can see the flags and that you'd comply with what you're told if the mods did get involved.
what 0celo7 said did not deserve a year long ban, and he probably only got it because of lots of previous bans.
had you said the same thing you would not have gotten a year.

6:22 PM
I've been flagged and suspended at least twice. I just don't make a big deal about it.

are you implying that you'd get a year too if you said exactly what 0celo7 did?

I also got formally asked not to make jokes about testicles.

You're conflating two things.

Suspended for a year?
during a short suspension?
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't keep quiet about it

one: if another user was involved in a similar incident, would they suffer the same punishment
two: if another user was involved in a similar incident and displayed the same pattern of behavior, would they suffer the same punishment

6:24 PM
can I downvote a starred comment...
I want to show my lack of support for a starred comment
lol

lol

@enumaris If you find a comment offensive I can unstar it

the thing which makes all of this tricky is that the mods aren't judging just based on one incident, presumably, but an entire history

yeah that's what i said.
this implies that SE users have criminal records.

A history where all chat mods have noticed 0celo7 get flagged for no reason

6:25 PM
and that's just dumb.

and have made comments based on that

How? @JohnRennie

because anonymous flaggers flagged plenty of innocuous messages from 0celo7

Sid
(Is there a custom mod flag in chat?)

@Sid You like Yu-Gi-Oh?

6:26 PM
I will say, though, that the way flags work in chat continues to strike me as silly and prone to abuse

@skull magical powers :-)

@Phase which got him auto-suspended far too many times (which I presume are on his record).

:-)

If you're going to flag a message, you should at least be required to give a reason for it

Yep
So there's a large chance that the reason 0celo7 got yearbanned is because of a lot of unfounded flags that were even pointed out as such by chat mods

Sid
@NovaliumCompany No. But, you have piqued my curiosity about it now

which is why this moderation stance and system is fucking dumb

@Phase last warning. Drop it.

@Sid I like it, or at least when I was young. I had so many decks...

@JohnRennie I don't find it offensive, I just don't support the comment. It's the 12 starred comment by ArtOfCode. Generally I don't support censorship - even if it's censorship on a private platform.

6:27 PM
Kick me, I don't care lmao

Kick me too.

lmao

@enumaris That's pinned as well as starred. It's also SE policy and right now is maybe not the best time for that conversation, in my opinion

@Semiclassical the SE chat system is highly refined in some ways and not others (flagging). anyway its kind of a backwater/ near ghetto at times by SE standards. this is seen in the no rep impact. it was apparently initiated by a now-exited co CEO.

6:28 PM
@vzn lol
drop kick me.

Q: Why did I get chat suspended for a year?

0celo7I've been chat banned for a year after having served a 2-day sentence. Can you please point out what I said that was particularly offensive? I don't believe I said anything wrong, at all. (Of course all of the messages are deleted so there's no evidence of anything.) My version of the events is...

nasty

@JohnRennie certainly the right to censorship is with SE, but that doesn't mean I have to support it, I just want to show my lack of support lol.

Guys, I feel like the chat turned into a war field ;\

Q: Why do I keep getting kicked from chat?

0celo7This evening I have been kicked twice from chat, apparently for not acting in "good faith." All I said is that my primary concern is whether my messages will be flagged or not. I don't see what's wrong with that, flagged messages are offensive so if I'm not posting offensive messages what is the ...

@Semiclassical 0celo7 says if you have a discord or email, do share so he can keep in touch with you.

p sure he's got my email already? i'll check tho

I'm closing this question because a mod message with proper explanations is forthcoming. We can decide later how much of this conversation should continue in public. — rob ♦ 1 min ago

wtf

6:33 PM
@Semiclassical Oh yeah he says he has. He was wondering about more chat-friendly stuff ideally, he says.

Sid
@rob Shouldn't it be answered in the meta-question?

@rob lame

Thanks, @rob

Consume?

6:37 PM
@ArtOfCode Last thing I'll say for now: The guy is just talking about math/physics for god sake, this is seriously childish on the moderators part, you guys really need to chill out

My stance and word of advice: Let's all move past the point where harm comes to hbar for dwindling on this issue. I'm sure the moderation has understood and will consider the option of discourse.

no math going on in here atm lol

wut, who is Physics Meta?

a bot

@NovaliumCompany It's a feed that posts the most recent meta questions to chat

the official account of physics meta lol

6:41 PM
@bolbteppa and you're pinging me about this... why?

@ArtOfCode the decision to 1yr 0celo7 wasn't yours?

it doesn't matter if it was his

Sid
@Droleulb I don't think mods are allowed to say that

I'm closing this question because a mod message with proper explanations is forthcoming. We can decide later how much of this conversation should continue in public. — rob ♦ 10 mins ago

my being skeptical about mod authority in general doesn't mean I approve of a mod witch hunt

And this is clearly reaching that point.

If rob's writing an explanation... why would it be me that decided anything? Please apply some thought before making assumptions.

@ArtOfCode his message didn't imply he was writing it

@Droleulb he said "a mod message with explanation is on its way", or words to that effect. Can non-moderators send mod messages?

rob
@Droleulb I'm not sure which of us will write it, but it will be a summary of a lengthy and well-documented discussion that has taken place in a private channel.

@ArtOfCode no but there is more than one moderator sheesh

6:47 PM
@Droleulb Am I a Physics moderator?

i don't care which one of you will write it, i'm just saying i'm not wrong for being unaware that rob is writing it because he did not clearly indicate it.
@ArtOfCode this is a chat ban so I'm assuming all moderators involved get a say in it.

And I'm just saying that automatically blaming me for any mod action is inappropriate.

rob
@Droleulb Right, because I'm not sure whether I'll write it or whether someone else will. It's a busy day for everybody.

@ArtOfCode i'm sorry for that.

Glad we understand each other.

6:48 PM
@ArtOfCode I did so because you were the last person to publicly interact with the messages in question.

Being skeptical about mod authority in general is appropriate and healthy
But focus on one mod in particular is rarely going to lead to anywhere helpful.

rob
100 messages moved from The h Bar

nice work @ArtOfCode

in The h Bar, 8 mins ago, by ArtOfCode
@bolbteppa Okay. Leave me out of it. I had nothing to do with the extension. Let the Physics mods deal with it, like rob is trying to.

cleaning up :-)

7:35 PM
@ArtOfCode where will the physics mod's explanation be posted?

1 message moved from Charcoal HQ
@skull it won't, it's a mod message

@ArtOfCode ok

8:15 PM
@ArtOfCode But I am assuming that the continual demands for having a proper discussion on how the policies are being invoked and how far the Be Nice rules are being stretched are being talked about among the moderators? (I am pinging you because you were involved in the freezing of the room and present during our 1 and 2 days ban, which falls in my "confusing actions" list that I have politely pointed out before)

ArtOfCode isn't the one to explain this stuff - as he keeps saying, he was only marginally involved.
And yes, these things are constantly talked about among the moderators.

@BalarkaSen I was involved, but I am not a Physics moderator. I cannot tell you what they are or aren't discussing even if I wanted to.

I understand, I was responding to "It won't", which seems to be a direct denial to interact or any consideration of interaction at all.
I know the mod message is not going to be public, but the "explanation" we are looking for is not limited to that.

@BalarkaSen I'm fairly certain that statement was only meant to address the mod message. Don't take it to mean any more than that.

Good to know. Thanks for clarifying.

8:21 PM
No problem
I'll also mention that as far as explanations, if you're looking for an explanation of why an individual user got suspended, we (mods) won't discuss that, but we are willing to discuss the rules and procedures surrounding suspensions in general, and we can also provide some feedback to individual users about behavior that may place them at risk of suspension and how they can avoid it. (The latter more likely in private)
Incidentally, I'm still busy today but I think tomorrow I might have more time to discuss these things.

My question was much more general than why an individual got suspended, yes. Both of those ideas seem to be a good approach at resolving the conflict.
It's alright, the conversation - as long as it happens - can happen at any time.

Sure. As long as it stays away from asking about an individual suspension, should be fine.

It's simply an anecdotal example of the general confusion surrounding the rules and procedures on my part.
