Just out of curiosity - the moderators discuss mostly using moderators@mathoverflow.net? Or in a private chatroom here on SE? Or both?

Historically it's been mostly via email, but lately more and more via chat
Looking at Asaf Karagila's chat profile it says he posted the last message 17h ago - but when I list his messages in chat, the most recent is from February: chat.stackexchange.com/users/839/asaf-karagila?tab=recent
That means that he posted in some private room which is not visible to regular users. So it seems quite likely that the mods are discussing things in a private room - maybe things related to the custom close reasons.
