@RydwolfPrograms wasn't it also a huge meme like a year ago
before that i had also heard of it actually but had no idea it was called lean
in canvas, May 4, 2022 at 22:04, by Unrelated String
but flash got turned into flesh after lean install ate the a
@RydwolfPrograms the really pedantic issue here is that, at least in c, there is no such thing as a case with an empty body :P
because there is no such thing as a case statement
cases are just a special case of goto labels
One of my professors is so unhelpful
He makes an announcement saying that today's class is on Zoom, same link as office hours, but doesn't post the actual Zoom link
One student replied asking where one could find the Zoom link, and the professor just replied saying that it was the same as the link for office hours
The syllabus doesn't have Zoom links, nor are they in some helpful place in the class Canvas
You have to hunt through previous announcements to find the link
I can't wait for this guy to retire
Today's lecture was on old computers, punch cards and stuff, and he went on a tangent about bridge for like half an hour. I left the meeting after that, but I doubt he got back on topic in the last 15 minutes (the class is on algorithms and has nothing to do with the history of computers anyway)
Most classes consist of him mainly rambling, and the actual content is in recorded videos that we have to watch outside of class time. So we basically have to spend double the time for the class
He's co-teaching with another professor and keeps bragging about he's going faster than the other guy, but he's really only going faster because he makes us watch the videos (most of them are from ~2021) on our own time and doesn't teach during the actual in-person lectures
One of the homework problems was literally "Use roust and torus in an English sentence in a way that shows that you understand the meanings of those words." This in a CS class
The guy hasn't even bothered staying up-to-date with what's happening in programming now. He says he knows nothing about modern programming languages and did a little bit of work on those punch card computers back in the day
@UnrelatedString thank you! I knew it was!
He uses 1-indexing for everything but occasionally uses 0-indexing without telling us (or uses this fake sort of 0-indexing where he does A[0] <- infinity and it's sorta both 1-indexed and 0-indexed at the same)
you can't actually write, say, switch(x) {default:}, but can write switch(x) {default: ;}
and if anyone's wondering why it took me so long to finish writing that out holy fuck do i hate celebrating things
@user "I was roust by the sound of the omnipotent torus telling me that my professor gives me stupid assignments"
00:32
lol
"I then went and roust my professor who had a head that resembled a torus"
...that would be scary
maybe this is just a divorced parents issue but every time it's like a whole day of trying to work plans out until we eventually give up and reschedule
"finally, as I roust, I went and got some torus-shaped pastries from the bakery called 'Torus Roust'"
:(
00:34
> torus-shaped pastries
donuts?
i guess it's lucky that the occasion this time is my 21st birthday so i can legally drink the rest of the night away :P
:|
You good?
in Vyxal, Mar 7 at 16:00, by Vyxal Bot
@user ⊂((・▽・))⊃
I was hoping you would say "yes" because I have literally nothing to offer you except VyxalBot's hug
@UnrelatedString took me a second to remember you're in America where the drinking age isn't 18
i just hate having to make decisions for what a group of people will do for me
when i literally do not feel like doing anything
@lyxal lol
The drinking age is whatever you want it to be
@UnrelatedString fr
literally me
like quite literally
No, that's Unrelated String. You are two distinct entities. Shut up dumbnuts
00:38
I'm having to think about how I want to spend my 21st with people
so I get it
it be like that
:|
@UnrelatedString Consider stuffing your mouth with cake instead
Much more pleasant, I've heard
In the morning, at least
@UnrelatedString It's not that I hate it, it's more that it becomes a manner of thinking "is everyone going to be entertained and are they going to be bored just sitting around"
Can you reduce the number of people who'll come?
00:40
@user see, that would require me to have decided on a cake to have baked by noon today :P
@lyxal in my case it's just getting together for a family dinner
@user it's not the quantity of people I'm concerned about. I'd be thinking this about anyone coming
Plenty of cake in the bathroom
2
@UnrelatedString Hold the family dinner in a remote place so no one comes
when the last interaction i had with my mother was having to tell her off about misappropriating trust money
Bonus points if it's in a haunted house where you all get picked off one by one
@UnrelatedString in mine, it's just an afternoon tea thing. Like only two of my cousins and some of my aunties coming over for the afternoon to have tea
00:41
nice
@UnrelatedString ah dang. That would make it more complicated :p
and also i only got like 7 hours of sleep and had a larger than usual workout
that implies you usually get more
and you're the one who's always up at 4am :p
also, while I remember: unrelated.age++ :p
@RydwolfPrograms and speaking of this i've been starting to suspect for like a month now that i have undiagnosed adhd and just happening to think about alcohol made me think about how much it would suck if i did turn out i do have adhd and then have a good outcome from getting on meds at 20 fucking 1 with half of my undergraduate degree and all of my teenage years behind me
I mean, 21 years is still a small portion of your life. If it does turn out meds help, you'll have like 50 years that are better
00:45
my "prime" would be basically gone already
Oh come on
21 isn't past anyone's prime
Unless they die early or something, which I assume you won't
the age you're thinking of is anywhere in the range 25-35
i kind of prefer the idea that i'm just intrinsically fucked up and my life thus far has been a struggle to get things together than that my family fumbled my youth by not having me tested for anything since i was like 8 and having this weird prejudice against people who do have adhd despite all of us being proudly autistic
it's like... once a week max that i can actually concentrate on something without some kind of hard time pressure
feedback is a funny word. Like I get you're feeding information back to the person, but I feel like that should be included in the word
01:00
without that context, feedback could mean you're feeding anything back to someone
in other news, I am currently trying to write feedback for team members for an assignment we just finished because it's required for marks
and I have written a general paragraph I'm just substituting names into
but I have the word feedback in the template
and it looks funny
not formatting funny
just like "never thought about that word before" funny
01:24
didn't know I needed this
gosh it actually slaps
02:00
@UnrelatedString I think this just comes from cultural bias due to nostalgia and sensationalization of the achievements of a few rich kids with no lives
makes sense lol
At 21 you've spent half your life nonsentient, three years in middle school, four in high school, and three in college. You haven't even finished preparing for life, you've got plenty of time to actually utilize it
i still feel like i totally had the energy to actually pursue pet projects if i could sit down and do them when i felt like it (and also not have multiple breakdowns while applying to universities that have kinda set the tone for everything since)
Like today for a school field trip I was on a college campus and I looked around and was like...these are kids. I've been thinking of college students as full grown adults my whole life because like, 18, but I looked as old as half of them.
@UnrelatedString I don't think that's energy loss due to getting older, I think that's energy loss due to additional time requirements, responsibilities, and the global loss of attention span and productivity stemming from 2020-2021, if your situation's anything like mine
i still have that energy most of the time, i just also had it then
02:10
I think the one time I or my parents have actually tried to figure out if I have ADD or autism or both of the above the doctor person was like "it is entirely possible" and that was it. Didn't suggest any like, way to confirm it, just said it was possible. The sheer efficiency of the US healthcare system astounds me.
And this wasn't like, some rando yearly checkup doctor, we had to go all the way over to the big tower full of task-specific doctors or whatever that's by the hospital
They did the same thing with my sister (who definitely has ADD) who went with us
(Although it may actually be good I've never gotten any formal diagnosis if I do go take the Air Force route to paying for college, since apparently pilots aren't allowed to have ADHD)
(which seems real dumb to me)
in any case i'm glad i went for mapo tofu and twice cooked pork because spice has a weird way of lifting my mood
It took me three reads before I realized that wasn't some extremely dense slang that I had never heard before
lmaoo i can see how mapo tofu can look weird to non chinese speaker
02:19
Mainly I didn't read the word "for"
So it read like "...so I went all mapo tofu on them"
lol yes we asians gonna go mapo tofu on yall
better watch out
my favorite part of dinner tonight was when i said it's mapo tofu time and mapo tofu'd all over the sand trap
2
@UnrelatedString bro spice is literally something i try to avoid at all costs, i dont understand how ppl can withstand it :\
And reading "spice" as like, slang for a drug, was pretty amusing
Like, "doing coke has a weird way of lifting my mood"
bruh what now
02:22
^ This YT short is awesome
spices are drugs confirmed
@RydwolfPrograms that's beautiful
bro unrelated string u from sichuan or what, cuz that would explain how you are handling all these spicy stuff
or like u just like eating sichuan stuff
@AidenChow are you sure you actually can't stand spice and it's not just like you have low spice tolerance by asian standards
white as fuck and happen to have a sichuan restaurant in town yeah
02:25
bruh i cant tolerate spice at all
they probably make it milder for us than they would for themselves :P
damn
rip
like some hot cheetos and im done for
my mouth would be on fire like crazy
i like to eat the more milder stuff like shanghai or canton food, those i can actually eat lol
@AidenChow It's just reduced sensitivity built up from exposure
People from cultures with lots of spicy food aren't just naturally better at handling spicy food they just...eat more spicy food :p
(Interesting corollary: by avoiding spicy things you may actually be making food more spicy for yourself)
oh yeah have you ever had chili crisp on vanilla ice cream
02:33
Also I just came across possibly the dumbest study
you get all the flavor notes but the milk cuts the actual spice sensation
It tried to show that capsaicin tolerance was genetic...using a twin study...but the twins were still raised together
lmaoooooooooooooooooooo
Tbf it's probably actually just being misreported by journalists and actually just made some small claim on an unrelated thing
But still lol
tl;dr go scream at your parents for not raising you to be capable of appreciating culinary perfection
02:40
I really hate the cultural association between capsaicin tolerance and masculinity
Like, why you gotta look down on me just because my sister hates spicy food and we're nice enough not to eat it that often
(not that that actually happens to me since I rarely eat anything around other people except the molded puree that is school food)
that's not really a thing where i live but wow yeah that's gotta suck
incidentally my sister is even more of a spice addict than i am :P
developing some pretty striking eyes of ibad
@UnrelatedString Oh I didn't consider that it might be regional...possibly something borrowed from Mexican culture?
wouldn't be surprising
i think there's a spice-masculinity thing in rural areas and some subcultures or whatever but in those cases it's less habitually eating normal spicy food and more being willing to subject yourself to spice beyond your tolerance
@RydwolfPrograms (and I think this is one of the few instances where "Mexican" in place of "hispanic"/"latin[aox]" is actually correct, since IIRC that originated from the Aztecs)
02:56
Hey, they stole my idea!
I was talking to ChatGPT the other day trying to sell it a keyboard with eInk keycaps and then I see a random ad on YT today for a keyboard with an LCD screen behind it
Still think e-ink would work better
Having a keyboard that produces light would be pretty annoying
look better if nothing else
02:58
...I type on my RBG keyboard [facepalm]
@RydwolfPrograms I'm in a uni class with 80ish 18-year-olds, I've talked to some of them, and I'm not sure if any of them have noticed I'm 15.
Yeah I was at work one time and all my coworkers were trying to guess my age (idr how the conversation turned to that) and they settled on 20 somehow 💀
(I'm 17 rn)
(of course the PQR keyboard was a scam tho)
Oh god ChatGPT does NOT understand how to sound like Trump
I lost it at "Well, that's just like your opinion, man" from Donald Trump
03:05
@emanresuA yeah i probably wouldn't notice either
okay that "kind or helpful" -> "kind of helpful" typo is probably partially responsible
everyone in the 18-25 range looks either 15 or 30
LMAO
that'll do it
Okay yep it's working now
there we go
It still does seem to revert back to its ChatGPT identity when you pressure it into situations the person it's imitating would find unusual, which is annoying
03:16
sad
see if you can teach it to use dialogue tags lmao
/undonald /redonald
I hope I don't get banned by OpenAI for some of the stuff I'm trying to get Trump to say lol
oh yeah also also it just occurred to me this might be worth mentioning
sichuan pepper, while awesome and often paired with chili pepper, does not actually have capsaicin or anything else that causes a spice sensation--it's just its own weird unique thing
so if you happen to see that in the ingredients of something otherwise mild-looking, fear not :P
I wish, with more strength than I actually have, that those were real song lyrics
03:25
same
I love that it actually did it
oh god what did I just start
Okay phew I am now playing Minecraft with them and Trump has tentatively agreed to join
Uh oh there's some suspense. Trump just ran across another group of players on the same server...we might be about to play factions
Okay lmao it just started generating markdown links to https://chat.openai.com/Donald! in place of [Joe Biden]
That's like, side channel communication

It's always "antipesto"
It's never "propesto"
Why do people always have to be so against pesto?

6 hours later…
12:44
13:26
just a normal SM64 OST video
totally not a melody that I can't keep out of my head
you might wanna replay it again and again :p
faulbchdt

5 hours later…
18:42
@lyxal Pretty sure you mean "rousted." Sorry, can't give you full marks on this assignment :P
@lyxal TLDR: "Anti" means "before" and "pasto" means "food"
"Pesto" is unrelated and means "crushed"
19:11
Read this as "personal computer" at first and was pretty confused for a moment
Uh, yeah--he somehow survives getting flushed down the drain, pops out in Sydney Harbor, evades the crabs, and eventually runs into Dory and is reunited with his dad. --Wait, wrong movie?

1 hour later…
20:28
Why are songs without lyrics by bands that usually have lyrics always so good
Future by Paramore and Cure for the Itch by Linkin Park
(I mean they do both have lyrics but those aren't exactly why you listen to them lol)
I guess it's probably survivorship bias (if it's going to not have lyrics it better be good if it's going to be on the album) but still...

1 hour later…
21:33
@DLosc ^ is what I saw in my inbox
Got really confused for a second
@lyxal I can't do that either :P
