Probably as soon as it became possible to count characters, i.e. when Iverson Notation was lineralised into what we know as APL. My father worked 1968–72 at IBM, and they were already betting cups of coffee on code golf.

I never realized just how bad most US state flags are

I think the ones further south tend to be better so I never noticed how many were just seals on plain backgrounds

I feel like half of the state pride and exceptionalism here in Texas is the fact that our flag is like, a flag lol
