Okay so, solciting-opinions-from-strangers time
I want to do a college visit to two colleges I'm interested in applying to
They're pretty far away, so I'd need to fly (and take a train between them)
I'm 17 years old
My mom insists that she should have to go with me
So, AITA time
Am I right? Or is she?
IMO if I'm gonna be completely on my own in a year, spending a couple of days on my own is like, perfectly reasonable. It would be stupid if my first time travelling and stuff on my own was also the first time I did so without any support network or anything (not that they really count as one, but they have money)
(She's deluded herself with the classic "once you're in the real world you'll see" line of reasoning into thinking that I'm not actually gonna go NC like I plan to when I go to college)
(and seems to think that we'll be flying to my college as a whole family to say goodbye or some nonsense, and not that I'm leaving the house at 2 AM with a backpack containing $10k cash and pawning off my phone on the way to the airport)
And it's not like I'm wandering around in dark alleyways in Boston, all the transit and hotels and stuff would be in place beforehand so I'd kinda just be going from point A to point B
It's gonna be hard for your parents to just let you go like that
As in for the visit or permanently
Well, permanently
@RydwolfPrograms Why would you need to do that?
For the latter I could give a fuck how hard it is for them, they've made me hate being in my own house for half my life they can deal with it

02:53
@user There one day and gone the next, nice and clean
*couldn't
@RydwolfPrograms They would still know what college you're at, wouldn't they?
Sure, but I can read return addresses and I'll own a trash can. And if they wanna fly all the way to Pittsburgh or whatever I can just be like "don't let that guy in I don't know him"
17 is plenty old enough to go on a solo trip
That's what I'm tryna tell them
especially if it's to check out a place you'd be moving to anyway
02:55
I can drive and I have a job. The state will entrust me to vote and be a fully independent person in 7 months. They're being too overprotective.
You can just go on your own, right?
Like, they can't force you to bring them with you
I'm not sure burning your bridges is a good idea, but if you're going to do that anyway, you don't need to convince them, you can just do whatever you want
Like, without their permission? Sure, if I wanna pay close to a thousand dollars myself, and not have a car or a house for 18 months
Ah
At minimum they'd probably take a sledgehammer to my nice computer setup, and my dad would probably just decide to do what his dad did and I'd arrive home to a U-haul and whatever paperwork you need to divorce your child
yikes
02:58
(which if I had a slightly better paying job I'd be all for)
("household annual salary of $10k" gets a lot of college financial aid money :p)
@RydwolfPrograms Are you exaggerating or are you sure they'd actually do this?
If I went across the country without their permission? I'd be lucky if I escaped alive lol
Wow, I'll second Jo King's yikes then
Looks like rent is around $1100/mo. That's basically three shifts of work per week for housing, and they're stingy with shifts so I'd probably need a second job to afford food and stuff
And there'd be no RTO server upgrades :p
I'll third JoKing's yikes then
03:03
i get the feeling that this is less a "keep him safe on his trip" and more "find excuses that he can't move there"
Tho...that's actually not too bad. Maybe I could consider emancipation, the finances don't look as bleak as I'd assumed
@JoKing Nah, I think my mom's intentions are good, she just doesn't realize I'm older than 12
@RydwolfPrograms i think the emancipation process would take longer than 7 months
I wouldn't have any college savings, not by any means, but I think if I'm emancipated only my finances would be on the FAFSA so I'd probably get in totally free
@JoKing yeah, true
I'm hoping I'll be able to just slowly wear away at their resistance for a few weeks and convince them to let me visit alone
I really only have like a year or so to go, the last six months will probably be pretty "I'm about to leave so let's just be nice okay"
03:20
Okay it would be $1800/mo or so to live alone, assuming I could commute via bicycle or public transit to pretty much everywhere I needed to go. At $15/hr, that's 4 hours of work per day...so in six hour shifts, five days a week. Not much time left to do homework. It'd be an option I guess :p
03:38
This honestly looks pretty nice
And a whole lot less to sweep
@RydwolfPrograms how are you calculating 1800/mo? need to be careful about random other expenses
Housing: $1100/mo
Medical: None, I can prolly make it a year
Food: $300/mo
Transportation: $0/mo, or close enough, since my school and work are within biking distance
Other: $400/mo
That 400 should be a comfortable enough margin that I could save a small amount in case I need a big purchase
ok, that seems pretty decent even if i don't know how prices translate
Honestly warming up to the idea. Time would be super tight tho. Worst case scenario would be me turning 18 before it's all finalized, so I both have all bridges burned and have to foot the bill for a year of housing, but also count as a dependent of two upper middle class parents for financial aid purposes
I really don't gain anything from living with my current family except a roof over my head. No support emotionally or people to talk to even about mundane things, awful food since they go shopping once every two weeks at best and healthy food tends to go bad, constant arguing and stress, spending most of my time in a tiny bedroom that gets too hot because they're too cheap to turn on the air conditioner
Only thing I'd miss is two cats and a car
I'll have to call the county to ask about the paperwork, they don't have it on their website
The law is a bit poorly worded, but I think a 17 year old can go through with the emancipation process despite currently living in the same house (it's definitely not the case for 16 year olds, but a comma which is sometimes there and sometimes isn't is the difference for whether that applies to me), as long as they can prove financial independence (which since I have a job and a bank account, is probably enough)
Alternatively I could get married which automatically emancipates me :p
heh I could even afford a cat, not that I'd be able to take it to college

Q: $\sqrt{a^2}$ in integrals

HfdssdjnsHello we all know that $$\sqrt {a^2}=|a|$$ so when we have $$a^2=5$$ that is $$|a|=\sqrt5$$ and $$a=\pm\sqrt5$$ but i very often see that when solving integrals only the positive value is usually considered, for eg. Here in this example since $$a^2=5$$ that means$$a=\pm\sqrt5$$ but the book cons...

I have a gripe with Yves Daoust
Why is everyone upvoting Yves's answer rather than my (accepted) answer?
13:57
because he's Yves Daoust, you don't mess with Yves Daoust

Where's the "no and for god's sake please keep it that way option"
(For the last one)
It's pretty annoying to have a list of four positive things to rank, then the last one is thrown in with the implication it's of equal quality and importance

ksp2 tomorrow whos excited
ive been watching the YT vids and WOW
idc if its half finished, im buying tomorrow before they jank the price up
the one thing that sucks is that i have a potato pc laptop but ill make it work
What're the specs?
You can prolly get away with potato for everything but graphics
> KSP 2 will work across a wide variety of hardware beyond what is listed in our recommended specs, with performance scaling based on the size and complexity of the crafts you build.
yeah i have an i5 4th gen @3 ghz with integrated graphics, 8 GB ram :P
Huh, those're different from what's listed on Steam
Wait no nvm
16:46
the laptop on which i do my school (this one) has an i5-5300U CPU @ 2.30GHz
8 gb ram

You know what is suddenly one of my favorite things? US road signs.
Their color palette is really nice.
I like that shade of green and also that shade of yellow.
@ParclyTaxel Probably because of Yves Daoust's comments on your answer. An accepted answer isn't better, it's just what the OP thought was better. There's also some chance involved

Oh wow
First time I've been given a recommended YT video with no views
It'd been doing some weird stuff recently
