09:00
@forest wow, we should seriously move this to cryptography
It's pretty cool huh.
yah
even tho i haven't got time to view it yet
You should read it when you have the time. It's in four short parts: The history, the basics of encryption, the details, and the mathematics behind the details.
@forest yes
i will
I don't get why shit is a swear word. It's not offensive (bitch) or sexual (fuck) or religious (damn), it's just stinky, and yet this is the only swear word Microsoft Word tells me is offensive to the reader.
(If you know what it means)
Lol I keep forgetting that MS added "offensiveness" filters. It's so dumb.
It gets angry when you say "blacklist" because apparently the word "black" is offensive, but you can use the n-word and it doesn't bat an eye. Political correctness, especially nowadays, is just nuts. Or is "nuts" offensive to the mentally ill?
09:09
@forest what's MS again?
Microsoft, usually shortened to MS, or sometimes (more aptly) M$.
oh yah
I mean, the n-word is probably the worst of all swear words imo
which is why people DONT use it
It's not really a swear word, but rather a slur.
yah
people don't use swear words to offend any people anyhow
I personally think only parents say the word "kid"
(Or you're trying to be very mean and saying you little kid but...
Is that why you said I sounded like a parent? :P
I wonder if I started doing that when I became a parent. I dunno.
I think only young people get upset at "little kid". When you're young, you want to be old. When your old, you want to be young again.
09:14
@forest yeah
i mean, how about this
you little kiddo~~..
Try to make it sound mean...
Yeah that can be mean.
I wonder which subject your daughter likes the most
(and can we share emails because i don't feel like this room is named "Conversation between Nobody and forest"
Well, it's off-topic so anything really goes here.
My email is in my about me.
@NobodyNeedsNames Programming and Linux, since that's what I've been teaching her. :P
And microbiology, since I got a really nice microscope and showed her how to identify various protozoa.
(Another way of saying she doesn't like school - I'm a better teacher, but that's not a high bar)
@forest :-)
@forest well, i'm pretty sure a mod here is better than a random teacher (unless it's a mod of arqade (what's it spelled) or something
heh
09:21
*shrug* do you prefer email or here
Here is better. I don't often check my email. I use it more for professional correspondence.
I recommend the book called "the remarkable journey of coyote sunrise" but don't read that if you are likely to get an eye infection
i still haven't recovered yet
@forest me too. good
:-)
@forest I like math. I personally think my English is better than my Chinese although I'm (legally) from China. I study in a bilingual school and that's probably a starter of who I am.
@forest I was thinking if I want to set up linux on my mac
If you want to learn computers, Linux is great.
i setted it up on a neighbour's iPad before :-)
I don't know anything about setting it up on a Mac.
Heh, nice.
09:27
ok
I mean, but that's just like an app
that's like no hard work done
I've put Linux on... let's see... a calculator, a Nintendo DS, a phone, a camera, and uh...
which calc, hmm
What else? I known I put it on a few other things.
A TI NSpire.
How do I do it? I just so happens to have one
You have to jailbreak it. I think the program to do it is called ndless?
It was years ago. I forget.
09:28
I now think "Off-topic discussions moved from chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/240/the-nineteenth-byte" should be just changed to "Off-topic discussions. Only a smart proportion are moved from chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/240/the-nineteenth-byte"
Oh yeah, I also put Linux on an e-reader.
@forest ok, and then you can run python (with pip and stuff) on ti89?
TI89? No way. Far too weak.
Actually, looking it up, maybe some people have managed to put Linux on it.
Oh, no it was just ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/336/33685.html and that looks like a joke.
09:31
let me check if mine's an ti89
wait
Dunno if that's the site. Like I said, I did this many years ago.
ok
@forest do you have the calc?
and hi @user
Yeah I still have it.
Somewhere.
I'm taking that as a yo or a nes there
Well I never threw it away, at least.
09:39
if you can check for a folder under the TI named ndless
and if there is then that should be the one (unless for some reason you wanted that name)
Hi @lyxal , what are you doing here? ;-)
Reading what's happening
I'll do it if I can find it.
I remember there was a folder called ndless with a file called "installer" or something in there.
And clicking that would cause the calculator to reboot into a jailbroken OS.
hmmmmm... I'm going to try sometime
@forest may I ask what time it is now? even tho I shouldn't have replied right?
09:49
What time it is locally? I'm a bit paranoid. I don't give away my time zone. But... it is very late.
And I'm very rarely up this late.
goto sleep;
I can't. I'm researching depressing history, and not-so-depressing mathematics.
@forest hmm, why, i wonder, but alas
Life of a hacker.
@forest hmm, i'm a little interested
I'm posting this as my math correction because apparently I forgot to write "已知"...
(Which means known in chinease)
@forest I'm wondering why
I understand this
I mean, of course I don't understand that, but
I understand why you would want to look at that
meanwhile the history doesn't seem... connected.
They're totally unrelated topics. There is no connection.
I mean, why would you be looking up both at the same time, (and why would you want to look at the depressing history)
My brain is weird. In the last few days I've been on a "obscure variations of AES candidate ciphers" and "executed children in history" kick. Completely unrelated subjects, but when something catches my eye...
ok good i understand
the last week I broke my computer twice
10:01
Why?
so i'm on a breaking my computer kick
@forest once accidentally deleting system files due to my stupidness and once idk
the password just stopped working
eish
gotta go, but if you post messages and @ me I will reply later bye o/o/o/oo/
Alright.
11:00
@forest the way you say that makes me want to guess where you are from.
**flipping through geography books**
My guess is New Zealand?
:-)
11:16
@NobodyNeedsNames wrong..
my guess is USA
11:28
my guess is Laniakea
hmm true
lol
@lyxal true
@PyGamer0 but why wrong?
@NobodyNeedsNames because emanresu lives in NZ
and he goes offline usually in an hour from now
11:35
...?i don't get it
but forest goes offline wayy before similar to Radvylf
since Radvylf lives in Texas, my guess is that forest lives somewhere in usa
oh, and does anyone happen to know either of the TV series Alone OR SuperBrain?
@PyGamer0 OK
But he could've just be awkward about the time schedule
anyone even here ...?
...
@PyGamer0 ?
o/ for now

> Despite his criminal mind, this man is behaving well. His reward is the canoe. This time he can sit in the canoe for up to an hour.
why are you bringing that here if it was in off topic? :P
'sjust gonna get sent back
not this
13:34
begging you not to
quite frankly unnecessary

isn't that hectoliter or something?
14:30

@mathcat the fact that it's 1000L is literally in the name
kilolitre
oh wow me dumb
@thejonymyster I'll be interested to see when this happens
because quite frankly, I haven't the slightest frick what's cooking in there
all I know is that there's a high chance it's gonna cause radioactive mutations to anyone who eats it
@lyxal just ping me when its done
there should be a chat event for when it is
14:35
@thejonymyster I'll tell you as soon as I know
14:56
@NobodyNeedsNames Please don't do that again.
@mathcat bruh you are mathcat
dang
uff
@mathcat remember this?
in flax, Mar 10 at 15:05, by mathcat
and the result is 5×(3+4)=12
oh yea
I've listed it here
15:54
"sexiest female" the what
So some guy from mcr has been awarded "sexiest male"?
(Ignore the extraneous ears)
(They don't come with Gerard)
Okay I'm a male and not gay so I may not be qualified to judge that.
I'm straight but he do be kinda cute tho
but I don't get the "sexiest female" thing
Probably just people being funny
16:02
Reminds me of when the creator of 4chan was voted for best person on the world or something.
the voting site was somehow hacked by 4chan
This was also likely a vote just for people in rock/similar genre bands, so his competition wouldn't have been a huge number of people
ah okay makes sense
that's why nobody voted for Jake Paul

4 hours later…
19:45
@mathcat You don't have to be attracted to someone to judge their attractiveness
But that guy looks dead inside
I'd hate to see all the other people if they're even worse-looking than him
@user Well I mean TBF this is the picture of him from an album called "The Black Parade" which is just a giant metaphor for death lol
Ah okay
what's his name?
Gerard Way
Yeah I don't really see him being "Sexiest Male"
19:51
This was 16 years ago, keep in mind
He's nearly 50 now
Oh
And his hair's been like four colors by now too lol
Dyed black was sort of the default for him for most of the band's existence, it was dyed white during (part of) the filming of music videos and stuff for The Black Parade (but for songs like Teenagers and Blood it's still black), then he dyed it red around the time they made Danger Days, and then more recently it's been more natural hair color

1 hour later…
20:56
@RadvylfPrograms amazing
21:09
@forest Was the decline in repeat visitors, or total hits? I wonder if some people (and not just the under-18s) saw the notice and decided not to visit the site because they didn't want to see that type of content. I know I always appreciate when something's flagged as NSFW so I can avoid it.
@DLosc Hm, I don't remember.
A kid isn't going to know that there aren't any consequences. A 13-year-old has basically been taught all their life to be obedient and to be fear punishment
And even if they do realize that they could just lie, they might feel guilty about accessing a site that they're not supposed to
Also what DLosc said, I avoid clicking on NSFW posts with images in them and usually don't click on NSFW text-only posts in case there's any unsavory stuff there
I don't think many kids trying to find porn are going to feel guilty about lying about their age.

2 hours later…
23:29
Wow I need to stop smol (or same width/depth and not as much tal), I got a size small T-shirt and it's still too big lol
Not so much that I can't wear it but I feel like one kids in a trench coat
Clothes are always annoying to buy
Different companies don't always mean the same thing when they small or large or whatever
Yeah I also got a black jacket to go with the T-shirt (great choice in Texas and in summer I know), and they're off by like a whole size and a medium is what fits me (when normally that'd be like twice as wide as I am)
I was buying pants a couple weeks ago and they were all either the right height but too tight or the right width but too long
Would be great if people used inches/cm everywhere instead of S/M/L
even then there;s too many dimensions for it to just be one measurement
23:39
All clothes stores should contain hydraulic presses. Humans will now have a standard aspect ratio.
Yeah but 2 dimensions for pants and 2 for shirts is way more helpful than an arbitrary category
most of my clothing is size L and the shirts are usually a good fit if a bit baggy but yesterday my shirt was really snug around the waist and arms but also like an inch or two longer than usual
@RadvylfPrograms Flipping "one size fits all" on its head
it was kinda weird
Ah, the Dryer Distortion Effect
23:41
Yeah, having two dimensions would be useful. I'm really tall and thin so finding shorts that look good is almost impossible since they're all way too short (I've had to get ones made for kids since those adjust quite a bit but now I've realized long pants look way cooler anyway)
long pants are in fact superior
I'm short and dumpy and I still somehow can't find shorts that are long enough
^^
Bought a pair of long cargo pants and they are absolutely amazing despite being too wide and tall for me
I can finally carry my Portugal around with me
Only downside is summer exists here
23:43
Solution: don't touch grass :P
meanwhile i've got a pair of cargo pants that i mostly use for semi-formal occasions and they're too tight around the waist on top of being slightly too long
(Not that I'm very good at wearing weather-appropriate clothing in the first place, I wore shorts all winter since none of my pants fit at the time, and I'm wearing two layers of solid black right now when it's nearly 100°)
If, like me, your college dorms are shitty pieces of junk with no A/C, you can go back to your home after a year or find a new apartment to stay inside the entire summer
Can you teach me this power?
I've been looking at career paths for programmers and it's kinda depressing
It looks like most companies basically force you to go into management if you want to advance your career
It's either that, stay with the salary of a mid-level programmer (which isn't terrible, but still), or find a different field entirely
There's some types of programming jobs that pay better than others though, right?
Like data science and "software architect" and stuff
23:57
Yeah
But it's not super easy to become an architect
No clue what sort of job I'll do. My current plan is run for president but there's a few steps I'm missing I think.
From what I've read on Quora, Workplace.SE, Reddit, and misc articles (granted, not the best places for information), once you start getting older, you sort of get pushed into management roles
Yeah, that's the feeling I get too.
I mean, running for president isn't that hard
There were people who claimed their companies had technical tracks where you became senior software engineers. They still had more leadership stuff in their jobs but that's fine as long as you still get to code more than once in a while
But on the other hand, even with the best of intentions, the US's government is so broken I'd probably not be able to do much anyway.
