Q: WiFi gets unusable when using Bluetooth (21.10)

Rick_afkNotebook HP 14-am004la (2016) Intel Celeron N3060 (Very low spec machine) I recently got my hands around installing the bluetooth drivers for my laptop. Ever since I installed the OS a year ago I just didn't need to use bluetooth, now I need to use it for something important. I supposedly install...

Which band are you using for WiFi? If you're using something that requires the 2.4GHz bands, then you are probably seeing a lot of radio interference from that. If it's at all possible, set the WiFi to 5GHz. That should free up the local frequencies for Bluetooth 4.x and 5.x transmissions 👍‍
@matigo it is unfortunately the only band available for me, bluetooth 4.0 and WiFI 2.4Ghz, it wasn't a problem when I was on Windows though, so I figured it was a problem with my card's drivers
Windows has some mechanisms to "cheat" when using both Bluetooth and WiFi on the 2.4GHz spectrum, often at the detriment of your network speed. Many Linux distributions do not work with burstable-packets, though, choosing instead to try an maximize everything. If you can choose the channels that your WiFi router uses, try to stick with 1, 6, or 11. These three channels are pretty crowded in many urban areas, but they're the ones that interfere with Bluetooth the least 🤐
Title says 21.10 and tag says the EOL 20.10 which is it?
@David My apologies, mistyped, it is 21.10.
@matigo Unfortunately not since I'm in a work network and not my personal one. It is a shame to hear that, I don't wanna go back to windows :(

You need to enable "bluetooth co-existence". Edit your question and show me modinfo wl0. Make sure to format pasted text (like lshw) with the {} icon to make it human-readable. Start comments to me with @heynnema or I'll miss them.
There's also a BIOS update available for your computer at support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/…
Also show me dkms status.
@heynnema, okay I added the dkms status, when I try to use modinfo w10 it says "modinfo: ERROR: Module wl0~ not found." About the bios update I can't update it without a windows driver program, I'll download it on my main machine when I get back home and try to update the bios but I don't think anything important will change.
@Rick_afk It's not modinfo w10 but modinfo wl0 (whiskey lazy zero). If that doesn't work, do modinfo bcmwl. For the BIOS update, if you don't have Windows, you can try FreeDOS (freedos.org).
@heynnema okaaay, I remembered that I still had a 120gib partition where I had Windows 10, the bios is updated now. When I try "modinfo w10" it says "modinfo: ERROR: Module w10 not found." When I try "modinfo wl0" it says "modinfo: ERROR: Module wl0 not found." When I try "modinfo bcmwl" it says "modinfo: ERROR: Module bcmwl not found."
@Rick_afk So it's being difficult, huh? I was going off of the driver=wl0... but we can try finding it this way... lsmod | grep -i wl, or lsmod | grep -i bcm.
@heynnema Okay, the last one was the one that prompted anything at all, it's in the question now although I don't know what I'm looking at

@Rick_afk I'm looking for the driver for your wireless card, so that I can see what parameters are available to enable bluetooth coexistence... but it's fighting me. Although the list will be long, show me lsmod.
@heynnema aight sorry I was getting home, it's done
@Rick_afk Let's try modinfo rtl8xxxu | grep -i parm.
@heynnema added!
@Rick_afk It's really fighting me... last ditch try... show me ls -al /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/dkms.
@heynnema Done! To be honest I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and spend 10 bucks on an intel ac 9560 wifi card, I can't keep doing without both working, seems to have 5.1 bluetooth and wifi 5 (I think, because it says it supports 5ghz and it's from 2017). It says it supports linux natively so I'm hopeful, still many thanks for the help and for your time, you're truly an amazing person :)

@Rick_afk Ah! There they are. Show me modinfo wl | grep -i parm and modinfo rtbth | grep -i parm.
@Rick_afk If you're going to change cards, get a wifi 6 card.
@heynnema done! although modinfo rtbth | grep -i parm shows no output in the terminal About the WiFi thing, do I really need WiFi 6 if neither my home network nor work network have 5Ghz? Shouldn't bluetooth 5.1 be enough to solve this?

@user1174132 The wl driver doesn't support any "bluetooth coexistence" parms. I don't know if BT 5.1 will solve anything. Switching to 5ghz would probably solve your problem. WiFi 6 is much better than WiFi 5, even if your current router is only WiFi 5. You may upgrade your router at some point, and your computer would be ready.

@heynnema Welp, it was worth the try. Many thanks to you and your time, I really appreciate it, I'll try to find a cheap-ish wifi 6 card
