@Laurel I thought there was scope for a few variants. But regardless, it's a start. Once we have templates at all, offering more templates is just a matter of organisation.
@Laurel A lot of SWRs are asked by language learners. Finding the appropriate tag and its tag info is hard enough. Wanting language learners to parse a sizable slab of text is perhaps a bridge too far.

@Lawrence Maybe maybe not about finding the tag. I remember being confused by the name single-word-requests when I first joined; it's just not what I thought it would be called. But I'm not sure that's the entire story. On SFF, story-identification's the top tag, just like swr is on our site. While it's named clearly (at least in my opinion) and it shows up as a suggestion before you start typing tags, people still miss it. (Maybe because the top tags aren't shown when you're asking on mobile.)

@terdon The number of experts on EL&U has dropped together with the number of interesting questions. Unfortunately, there are a few users who feel that EL&U should be more exclusive, that questions should challenge only linguists and etymologists while anything in between is best closed or at best migrated over to ELL. I used to be able to spot a question with a hidden gem from a distance, but even those have become scarcer.
More than downvotes, there should be more upvotes, and attempts to persuade native speakers to stick around. I have seen too many native speakers, friendly and helpful to NNS, spurned by one or two comments which were probably said in haste, or interpreted too literally, and to my dismay, these native speakers, who were popular, admired and also earned a fair bit of reputation, do not come back.

@Laurel I've been having some trouble with similar problems over on Hermeneutics.SE. So, I'm completely open to ideas about these close votes. Yes, they made me better, but my ability to grow does not license fuddy-duddies to troll like Mari-Lou A just described quite accurately. Something's gotta' be done, and I'm really wide open to what.
@MattE.Эллен Right here with you.
