13:33
I am going to make a mock-up UI for RTO
14:21
@taRadvylfsriksushilani correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't RTO's flagship feature custom interpreters?
14:37
Yes
@GingerIndustries ...like rto.run?
Well, it's not really a mock-up I guess, since the real thing won't look anything like it
But UI should be coming in less than a month
@taRadvylfsriksushilani i'm trying to make a mockup
of the actual UI? or just what you think it'll look like?
actual
I am help
I'm planning on the UI being a bit of a surprise
ah ok
the thing is I want to help but I'm only really good with HTML/CSS/JS and python
14:45
Well, I'm basically the same in that regard lol
Hmm, if you're a contributor to RTO, I suppose you can see the ultra secret UI plans
nice
Ultra Classified Documents of Doom
I'll send you a SE-nitro-style drawing of what I want it to look like
methinks red would be a good accent color
Hmm, I waa thinking light blue, but that's a good idea
14:47
uh oh, all the in-progress SE nitro frames are on my old laptop
is that for Language Selection?
14:49
Yeah.
The boxes would be a lil' smaller though
oh
what about running code
That's the part I'm less sure about
Here's a screenshot of what I had (but dislike):
What's "Post"?
It'd have the permalink, CGCC post, and all that stuff
14:58
The UI feels very unorganized right now though, which I'll need to fix
@taRadvylfsriksushilani i think that looks pretty good
what's the issue with it?
Look at this example from Docker:
See how it feels kinda separated and...substantial? Mine feels empty and disorganized
And too much white space
hmm
I think if the "header" bit had a background color that would help
also adding a back arrow next to the language name to return to the selection menu
15:30
@taRadvylfsriksushilani problem: with the current design, I can't get the "Select Language" text to be centered. I could just remove it (leaving only the logo and menu icon) but that leaves a bunch of empty space in the header
Where is this select language text
Not sure if I like that design
What's the menu for?
15:34
links to github, help, ToS, etc
Seems like a pointless use of a menu
ig we could put it in the footer
Yeah, footer's a good place for that
but then the header is very empty
I'm thinking we have RTO's logo in the top left, and a search bar for languages
On the right we can have language moderation stuff
Sign in/out, upload, moderate, etc.
15:36
ah
hmmmm
gimme a minute
Also, that looks an awful lot like ATO's font lol
what ever do you mean
Oh wait no it's a different one

4 hours later…
19:40
@taRadvylfsriksushilani Finished header bar mockup
Oh boy that is very red
it is
I painted it with the blood of small children
I'm thinking we should go with a slightly...subtler color
like what
docker's header is solid blue
I was playing around with colored headers myself and honestly not sure if it's even a good idea to have one
But if we do, blue.
19:41
hmm
problem: ATO uses blue for their accents
ATO also uses a dark theme
ok valid
Idea: change header to use an off-white color
idea: change text to white
How about white on medium blue
#08b was what I was playing around with
I feel like blue is overused
A less saturated red would work too I guess
But red's a little harder to work with
I think it suits RTO
one second, desaturating
hsl(0, 60%, 60%) maybe?
Or something in that sort of brick red category
19:45
wrong room
@taRadvylfsriksushilani okay, I've updated it a bit
it look like watermelon
Still not sure about red. It's hard to get red to look good with a light theme.
dark theme?
I want to have both
Primarily light, but with a theme switcher
19:47
hmm
@taRadvylfsriksushilani hard... but not impossible
okay fine but I still think blue is overused
:/
19:48
yay
no wait
I'd go with gray but if we're doing the colored header it's not gonna be pretty
you are NOT PERMITTED to see the Secret Plans
I saw your secret plans.
19:49
uh oh
You want to escape out of TIO Castle.
@mathcat uh no we're working on RTO
Ah well
You'll stay there forever I guess
but ok
We'll see about that.
anyway
Honestly not as sure about the docker-like card-based UI as I was before
19:50
Why is the title "Logo Image"?
@mathcat we do not have a logo yet
I've realized we won't have much information to add in them
right
Language name is basically all
19:50
I won't design a logo
idea: keep the cards but move them into a pop-up like ATO does
@mathcat darn it
That makes it even worse of an idea
The cards would make it hard to see anything
You'd have to scroll for ages
¯\_(ಠ_ಠ)_/¯
19:52
So, we'll need a search somewhere. Let's brainstorm a list of places that could go.
Front page.
Header.
Dedicated search page.
okay, I think I've finally nailed the right shade of red
@taRadvylfsriksushilani i vote header because I already did that
Pop-up on languages page.
Pop-up on front page
Spammy popunder
remember those links that were going to go in the footer? I think we can put them at the end of the header like Docker does
@GingerIndustries I'm not going to let laziness dictate my project's UI
@taRadvylfsriksushilani sorry sorry
19:54
@GingerIndustries We were never going to have a menu
They were going to go in a nav bar like docker does
that's what they're called
Well, we hardly need the ToS in the top nav bar
And the top bar's already in use
For log in stuff, and adding languages
use the menu for account management?
No menus on desktop
That's bad design
19:56
One more click than necessary, and it's not discoverable.
is the shade of red good?
I still see the #ff3030
that's the one I like
It's making my eyes bleed
it seems just right with saturation
changed text color to white
19:57
Imagine if you went to a website and it had that color of red at the top. It might just be my screen, but that's violently, eye-searingly bright.
I think it's your screen
It's making my eyes fall asleep
I'll darken it a bit
Because I'm tired
It makes RTO seem like an amateur project by someone taking an HTML class written in the 1940s
I'm thinking we drop the colored header
And use blue
19:59
so replace it with white?
uh
there are two kinds of colors: blue and everything else
okay, switching to blue
Blue is friendly and official. Red is more associated with sleek, cutting edge stuff, when used with a dark theme.
Conspiracy theory: GingerIndustries time-traveled and took HTML classes in 1940.
we do in fact happen to be sleek and cutting edge [citation needed]
RTO's supposed to be a somewhat generic online interpreter, so red with a dark theme would be a bit off. And we're using a light theme anyway.

20:00
Opinions on green?
that's the past tense
@taRadvylfsriksushilani i'll try it
Try #0d4
Wait no, too bright
okay, switched
What's your obsession with very bright saturated colors lol
20:02
@taRadvylfsriksushilani i am secretly a hippie
dimming colors
I'd recommend HSL
Makes it a lot easier to tweak the colors
Hmm, green doesn't seem right
Blue it is
But I don't think the colored header is going to look good
20:03
I changed it and I hate how good it looks
Where should the language selection take place
That's our current biggest issue
Here's my proto from a while back:
the search bar definitely fills out the header but is kinda strange for this type of service
Not much of a fan of it though
@taRadvylfsriksushilani It's obvious
Theory confirmed.
Okay, what's a user's typical interaction with the site gonna look like? Probably go to rto.run, immediately look for the language they want, then do stuff with it
(⊙ˍ⊙)
So, we need them to be able to quickly find languages
20:07
@taRadvylfsriksushilani and if the search is at the top, their cursor won't have to move very far to get to it
(bc it'll probably be on the address bar)
No real programmer doesn't use Ctrl+L or Ctrl+T ;p
simply autofocus the search
In the header should not be the primary search
then what should it be
On the front page
That's the primary action they want to do by going to the main page: find a specific language
20:09
just search it up
But then what's the front page for?
maybe we can use a replit-style omnisearch
you can do all the things from the search
I'm thinking the front page should the primary, if not the only, way to find a language
Because if you go to rto.run, that's why you're there
so we have two pages: front and main?
What no
Front page and main page are synonyms
20:11
oh
was just confused
Maybe we go with the docker-like thing after all, with the cards
We could find something else to include, I'm sure
And on the left, we can have filters maybe
and when you select a card what happens?
You go to that language's run page
Like on TIO or ATO
@taRadvylfsriksushilani ATO has a light theme too (it's just ugly as sin)
wait what's @pxeger doin in here
20:14
14 secs ago, by pxeger
@taRadvylfsriksushilani ATO has a light theme too (it's just ugly as sin)
how dare you read our Secret Classified Plans
reads harder
╰(‵□′)╯
Idk if I want RTO's main chat room to be called "The Firing Range"
okay then what?
20:15
Maybe this should stay OLIMAR's room
how about the tomaRTO farm
What a pun
I like it, one sec
it was the first one I thought of lol
20:17
Thank you for unanimously naming a chat room for my own website
resuming our previous discussion
actually, should we move the messages?
no problem, happy to help!
lmao
uh
i'm going to do the move
264 messages moved from The Firing Range
@taRadvylfsriksushilani I have added the links to the end of the header
i'm going to go ahead and implement the card system
