05:32
@DavidWallace I don't need to.
06:00
@Gigili Does that mean you're in a good mood today?
06:11
It means I sleep on the floor.
Why I was born so late?
It should have been May, or June at least.
So when you said the left side of your bed was the wrong side, it was an evil, malicious lie?
Hey, speaking of being born late, I found a video of you when you were younger.
Younger? Doesn't make sense.
I've never been younger than this.
Yeah, I heard you were born yesterday.
Are you in a Well-Lucia-if-I-can't-tease-you-then-whom-can-I-tease mood?
Well, oddly Lucia, you have read me like a book.
Today is a holiday, so I didn't work.
06:22
Oh, well ...
Were you seeking more intelligent and meaningful discourse from me today?
So what do you recommend to encourage affection?
Goose.
You, my dear friend, are a true enigma.
06:37
Umm, a removed message again.
I tried to link to youtube.com/watch?v=obRFS3GLABM but because Stack Exchange removes the title, the whole point would have been lost.
I couldn't dance at that age.
Is she 8? 9?
Whatever.
"she" - isn't it you?
in Mathematics, Apr 9 at 12:26, by Gigili
@DavidWallace I am the only Gigili in the entire world.
It's more aerobic exercise than dance.
Gee, she'd probably cry if she heard you say that.
06:49
@DavidWallace True that, but people always try to make a fake version of everything, especially when it's extremely nice and lovely.
Ah, so this girl's parents were trying to make a counterfeit of you when they reproduced! Makes sense.
Reproduced?
How can you tease me so?
They reproduced. You just materialised fully formed.
They could just choose a fake name for the video instead of the long time-consuming reproduction process.
Ah, a simple answer for everything. But it stands to reason that they would want to have their own little Gigili.
07:00
Were you seeking more intelligent and meaningful answer from me today?
Your discourse is always intelligent and meaningful. Except when it isn't, of course.
I think I'm just an exception. Your discourse is always intelligent and meaningful, there's no exceptions.

2 hours later…
08:37
So I have a question @David.
Fire away.
08:49
When you firmly believe that "it's not possible to prove either the existence or the non-existence of God.", why in the world you've chosen the latter?
I'm tempted to ask about the difference between "choose" and "select".
I haven't chosen anything. I am unable to choose one way or the other.
Technically, you have. Aren't you an atheist?
What could the reason be other than laziness and simpleness? You could look for a prove or reason that God exists but you didn't bother.
Why do you think I didn't bother? I tried very hard to find a reason to believe in God. I failed.
We don't choose our beliefs. I could no more choose to believe in God than you could choose to believe in the Tooth Fairy.
It's like when you've lost something valuable, you don't give up until you find it.
As long as our life based of the fact.
@Gigili But if you've started to believe that the thing you're looking for can not be found (for example, the diamond earring got put out with the rubbish), you will eventually decide to devote no more time searching for it.
08:57
I'd continue living as I have no choice but still looking for it everywhere.
Not to announce that what I was looking for cannot be found.
Which contradicts what you said.
But if you've already convinced yourself that it can't be found, why would you look?
Every moment that I spend looking for God is a moment of my life that I shall never get back.
in Room for David Wallace and Gigili, Apr 2 at 8:21, by David Wallace
I would be delighted if you could convert me to something more spiritually fulfilling than atheism. But I don't hold out much hope.
Would I have said that if I was too simple or lazy to look for God?
That's the problem, I can't help you as long as you think like that.
OK, so how should I think, if I want your help? And I do, absolutely.
in English Language and Usage, Apr 21 at 13:02, by David Wallace
Yeah, one can spend too much of one's time helping those who don't wish to be helped.
Does that mean you're giving up on me?
09:03
I tried very hard to convince my ex, but I felt like squashing water at the end.
Pushing water uphill with a rake. I've told you that before! :-)
@Gigili Is that why he's now your ex?
Yes, it was the main reason.
@DavidWallace And I didn't feel like he loved me. That is, he kept telling me so, but I failed to saw any sign proving it's true in reality.
hug
Sorry to hear that. To me, not feeling loved is a bigger reason to end it with someone, than not having the same religion.
Are we interrupting you @badp?
I still don't understand how to become as "religiously malleable" as you require me to be, before you'll try to convince me that there's a God.
09:09
no, it's quite the contrary @Gigili
but it's not voluntary, I'm just picking up a discussion from last night
In English, I would say "it's well written, but completely wrong". Sorry that I can't help you with either the Italian or the Spanish.
Oh, so like "well thought out". I didn't know that.
@Gigili - will you be around later? I'd like to talk more, either about things between you and your ex-boyfriend (if you want to), or about how I might start a meaningful relationship with God. I need to do something else for a while now though.
@badp Right, it'd be easier for Cerb to follow you if you could post them consecutively.
@badp it's quite OK. This room is for linguistics after all, not love or religion.
@DavidWallace this is the room for the Linguistics community, rather.
See this as a place for community building. "Getting to know you" and all that stuff you can't do on the site.
@DavidWallace I will be, hopefully.
09:14
OK. So I'll talk to you later, if you feel like it. Bye for now.
@Gigili @Cerberus → 12 messages moved to "se non è vero è ben trovato"
er
Huh, well done. Sorry anyway.
my fault
@DavidWallace Well, that's what we thought in the beginning. I felt loved, of course; and I felt like my expectations are ignored at the same time.
@Gigili The alternative is being like me, a very very mild Christian who, eh, "believes" there's a god but honestly finds that kind of hard to honestly really buy. It's an awkward position to be in, but it's also the one that minimizes annoying tweets about the topic on either side of the argument, so I imagine people around me appreciate that more than I do.
:P
Sometimes I think that for most practical purposes, talking about religion in terms of "is there a god" or "isn't there a god" (or "if there is a god who says it is yours") is kind of missing the point. It's more interesting to talk about the ethics and values that come bundled with a religion, and how those affect your lives.
09:29
@badp Very true. That's indeed a deep point of view which I never discussed.
10:07
@badp You hear "musulmano" being pronounced like "rosa"? I doubt so. And @Cerberus I don't say "svegliarsi col piede storto", but "svegliarsi col piede sbagliato". I guess both expressions exist.
@Alenanno I pronounce them the same. There was actually a discussion with my university buddies about "rosa"/"roza".
@badp Rosa is voiced, musulmano is voiced.
Okkkkey I kind of stress the 's' in Musulmano a little more than I do for 'rosa'
Eh... That's what I say. And it's so stressed that some people type "mussulmano".
but if I wanted to say "Mussulmano" then I'd say it differently from "Musulmano"
I blame those pesky 'u's.
Actually it appears "Mussulmano" is an "accepted" spelling in decline
10:10
eheh by the way, welcome to Linguistics! This is the first time you are on here, right?
@Alenanno I'm actually surprised I didn't see this site before.
Kind of warmup for Italian.SE :P
@badp Spread the word! :D We reached 280 visits once, but then we fell back to 230... :/
I hope we can reach 500 soon
We started from a low number, so I'm being optimistic.
Ah the Italian SE...
eh, I don't know linguistics nuts though
I hope it can start soon :(
It's 69% there (tee hee), so it's going to need some more time
besides, I'm not looking forward to suddenly starting writing questions and answers in Italian. Awkward!
10:13
You can simply share some questions on Facebook or G+, or the site in general.
@badp Ahah yes!
That is going to be weird but cool.
I think it'd be especially important for Italian.SE to be more English than Italian though, given the surprising amount of foreign people curious to learn this language
I think we need to use the French SE policy.
What is it?
They translate everything to French: Questions, answers, tags, meta, even the announcements are bilingual! And it works!
I'm not too terribly surprised that it would be the Frenchies to come up with that idea
you know, what with their ordinateurs, their fiches, their telechargez and their fiddly accents :P
10:18
Ahah well, but see, it works! I'll push for that, personally. :D
quand'è l'ultima volta che hai telescaricato un foglio in un direttorio? :P
hai per caso scandito la pagina per ipercollegamenti per farlo?
Ahahah
I say "scannerizzato"
xD
yeah, that's actually not a word I can come up with a better term in Italian myself
@badp: Does your laugh sound like "ahahah"?
...okay, I guess "fare la scansione" counts
10:21
@badp She means in chat, sms, etc
@Gigili well, if you use that with Italian pronounciation then yes
I typically just go 'lol' so there's no confusion :P
I don't announce that I'm laughing.
@Gigili That depends on your personality, I suppose... :)

@Wipqozn GYAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
10:23
@badp So cute.
Wow, what was so funny?
"Oh, there is a demo [of this game]? Didn't see it on steam, so figured they didn't have one."
(transcript, dude.)
Steam is one of the few things Grace actually hates.
@badp Uhm... wow, I guess the conversation was important too then lol :D
@badp Oh...
Yes ... Transcript is the key.
Nice that you'll hang out here. I'll ask you if there's contest over there.
abwesend
abwesend?
10:33
@Gigili No promises :) "My" community is still over at the bridge :)
10:50
@badp But that's not religion, @badp, that's morality. There's a huge difference. It's possible to be very moral and not the slightest bit religious (like me); or religious but not at all moral (like Hitler).
@DavidWallace is there really? You can't really have the latter without the former.
You absolutely can. I do.
You got it backwards
I said there's no religion without morality. There certainly can be morality without religion.
Oh, sorry. I took latter = morality.
Umm, some would argue that religion causes morality. Taking Christianity as an example, if I truly believe that Jesus died to save my soul, it is human nature that I would then want to please Him, and obey God's commandments. But I don't think this argument works for everyone.
I'm more thinking 10 commandments kind of morality
"do not steal"
"do not kill"
blah blah blah
10:56
So you think that someone can't be immoral and religious? What about Osama bin Laden?
Jihad.
I dunno really.
Everyone has his own world view, his own take on morality religion etc.
You can be religiously intolerant and be atheist too.
Rodrigo Borgia.
wikipedias
scrolls down the huge article
finds no 'criticism' section
does find an amusing "List of sexually active popes" link, though
This is a list of sexually active popes, list of priests who were sexually active before becoming pope and popes who were legally married, and who belonged to the Catholic Church. Some candidates were sexually active before their election as pope, and it has sometimes been claimed that other Popes were sexually active during their papacies. Since such relationships were sometimes undertaken outside of the bonds of matrimony, and because sometimes the Pope was under a vow of celibacy, the Catholic Church considers these to be grave abuses and causes of scandal. However, it believes it does n...
11:04
Since when is sexual activity immoral?
It depends
On the activity.
Ahah
and the motivation for the activity.
@badp You have no choice, dear. winks
@Alenanno Abwesend = absent, away distracted, blahblah _ Especially the last meaning is widely used.
@Gigili Vielen Dank. :)
11:09
@DavidWallace it isn't, but it'd be immoral to lie :)
@Alenanno Keine Ursache.
AFAIK to become pope you must've previously sworn to pretty much give up on your sexual life
That can't be good for them.
It's their choice.
@badp Exactly. You're not forced to do that.
11:12
Obviously it's a very hard choice to live up to, too, so it's not really surprising if that vow gets broken :P
(it doesn't make it any less "wrong")
More human nature.
What's that supposed to mean? "to pretty much give up on your sexual life"
Some think they should be free to marry, like protestants do.
Totally completely bah?
@Gigili They cannot have sex, kiss, etc, anymore.
11:13
@Alenanno Well, of course they should.
@Alenanno Well, some English king did.
@badp Ahah I mean, recently...
@Alenanno Not even with their wives?
@Gigili They are not married.
@Gigili They're not supposed to be married anyway.
11:13
They cannot marry.
They're "marrying God."
Uh, that's disappointingly sad.
It's the way it is.
Again, it's not an easy choice to make, or one taken lightly.
Some people "get the call."
Good for them.
How can a pope be expected to provide moral guidance for everyone in the Catholic Church, including hundreds of millions of married people, if he doesn't understand what it's like to be in a marriage?
You don't have to experience everything to know what it's like.
11:16
@DavidWallace What kind of guidance are we talking about? Of course, not a sexual one lol
You'd know better if ... But not necessarily.
No, I don't think Catholics would consult the pope for sex advice.
@DavidWallace I don't think they often need to come up with new guidance.
Holy texts and all that.
Besides, it's part of their "work" as confessors to keep up with what life's like "outside"
Exactly. We're talking about a different type of guidance. If you want advice on sex, you buy some book about Kamasutra. :P
Or the Kama sutra itself.
But if I'm a Catholic, and I'm having difficulties in my marriage, isn't it reasonable to expect to be able to turn to my church for advice?
11:19
Yes, well, you got what I meant. :P
@DavidWallace yes, yes it is.
Protestants would.
@DavidWallace What kind of difficulties?
I think that's the key point.
I don't mean sexual ones.
That's what I meant by "their work as confessors"
11:20
That would be like hiring a football coach who's never played the game.
Umm, interesting.
I'm AFK anyway.
@Gigili Ok :)
@Alenanno Thank you for your permission.
Ahah
@Gigili It wasn't a permission ahah :D
@DavidWallace Mind you, I'm not trying to sell the system to you. It's not perfect, nothing is :)
11:24
No, please don't try to sell catholicism to me. I understand it well enough to know that I'm not interested in adopting it.
so why are you asking me to justify it? :P
I don't think I did.
Did I come across as confrontational, @badp? I really didn't mean to, and I'm sorry if I did.
You did, and I won't forgive you.
Welcome back Gigili.
Umm, what she said.
I'm not Badp, in case you're wondering.
11:35
@Gigili LoL!
@Gigili, you and badp use slightly different sentence structure. You're clearly not one person pretending to be two different people.
I really need and iPod, I'm losing money like a gambler.
And an iPod will stop you from losing money?
@DavidWallace Gigili looks kind of offended
@DavidWallace They saved lives and families!
Ahah
11:39
@DavidWallace I believe so, or I'm under the illusion and buying one will help me out.
What you need to do is persuade someone to buy one for you.
I'm perfectly able to buy one.
But that's not as much fun.
@Gigili Why would you need an Ipod?
@Cerberus to listen to music. Duh!
11:44
Just store any music on your phone. No reason at all to carry around two devices and pay double too.
MP3 players are a thing of the past.
@Cerberus I just need to get notified as soon as I received an email from my work or something.
Otherwise I have to sit in front of the computer all day and night waiting for an email.
And why would you need an Ipod for that? If it has any internet access at all (which I doubt), it would be terribly expensive, and it would come on top of the normal internet fee for your phone.
A modern Ipod is basically a crippled phone.
@Cerberus Oh c'mon. That's not true. The software is much better.
and the hardware too.
Eh I believe the hardware and software are basically the same as in a phone, except one or two generations outdated?
@Cerberus What else? I've heard that they notified the owner of a new email like a new text message which is what I need.
11:51
@Gigili I'm sure you can get your phone to do that.
Unless it's similar to mine.
The iPod supports multitouch, smartphones do not. The iPod has the touch, the phones work with pressure, which means they're going to get broken sooner.
@Gigili Any smartphone will do that; if an Ipod does that at all, it will be expensive—and redundant, since your phone can already do that. It is called push e-mail.
@DavidWallace I cannot, sadly. It's not similar to yours, luckily.
@Alenanno Modern smartphones have been able to do all that for years.
@Cerberus Well, then I got the only one that doesn't.
11:53
@Alenanno Haha aww.
Which phone do you use?
@Cerberus Umm, my phone cannot do that.
@Cerberus Nokia. :P
This is my current phone:
It's very girly isn't it?
@Gigili Then you have an old phone; but better buy a new phone than an Ipod + a new phone.
Okay that one looks ancient.
@Alenanno Heh, then I bet it is pretty old?
11:55
I was thinking it looked rather nice. I am being pressured to buy myself a new phone. I completely don't need one.
Smartphones from 3 or 4 years ago should be able to do all Ale said.
@DavidWallace Are you sure you need a girly phone?
And an old one too?
@Cerberus It's the 5800 Xpressmusic.
@Cerberus The pink one, yes. Mine is black.
You think it's a good one, and it is, but well, no multitouch.
@Cerberus You're not listening. I said I completely don't need one.
11:57
@Cerberus Ancient? bangs her head against the wall
@Alenanno Ah OK, so that one's 4 years old.
And it is a Nokia.
I don't need a new phone, it's off all the time.
@Gigili He hasn't seen mine.
The iPod already existed by then. :P
@DavidWallace That means "OMG I'm going to buy one now" to most people...
@Alenanno Sorry, but a modern Android phones is way better (my phone is even older than yours, by the way, so no need to cry!).
11:58
@Cerberus Ah yes, silly me.
What a stupid word, girly.
@Alenanno It may have been a useful device back then if you really needed a lot of space, didn't mind carrying around two devices, and didn't mind paying € 100 extra for it.
