Q: Linguistics Greatest Hits

AlenannoA new feature has been implemented: The Greatest Hits page. You can view the Linguistics Greatest Hits page here. What is this? It's a page that features "Questions that got a large amount of views or a large amount of feedback." In other words, they are our showcase, the most important question...

Q: Cleaning closed questions

AlenannoOther than the Greatest Hits issue, there is another one: closed questions. The policy on SE is to delete closed questions that aren't salvageable, spam, illegal, too localized, etc. Only duplicates might be left there, as they serve the useful purpose of directing users to the actual question. ...

@kamilstachowski Come here, comments aren't made for chatting. Anyway, I'm not sure about that. You might try asking on MSO directly.
13:02
Hey @Gigili @OtavioMacedo @Cerberus @hippietrail
What's up?
Wikipedia is getting a new, better editor!
How was the previous one?
Only the right half.
Not only does the new editor have a live preview, like Stackexchange, but you edit the preview directly.
13:16
Oh...
You never edit Wiki articles?
Oh? How? :|
No, never did...
Hmm OK.
Imagine you could just click on the preview as it exists on Stackexchange while you're editing, and directly type words and add links in the preview.
That's weird...
I gotta go now... See y'all later
:)
@Cerberus that's good! Live preview was one of the features I missed on Wikipedia
13:29
@Alenanno Bye!
@OtavioMacedo Yeah I know! Editing a long article, scrolling down to click preview, waiting (for a long time) for the page to load, then scrolling all the way to the right section...

What's the opposite of fully charged?
Not fully charged, of course =\
When it needs to be plugged into a wall outlet via the adapter
I thought you would respond to my questions without force (@YOU)
partially charged?
No no, it'll be turned of in a minute or so
18:35
Hmm, I don't know a phrase for this
off*
My laptop always warns me: "battery critically low"
hehe
@Gigili Nearly empty?
Yes, nearly empty
My mobile phone is nearly empty, makes sense?
@OtavioMacedo I rarely unplug it just because of that warning, gets on my nerves badly
18:52
@Gigili Yes, perfect sense.
Technically it is the battery that is empty, but in casual speech we often say the phone is empty.
Right, thank you.
Do you have an iPhone? iPod, iPad ?
Hello!
I don't have any iP*
@Alenanno Hi!
What's up?
18:58
@Gigili I was wondering, is that you in your gravatar?
It's my eye, not me!
One of them, of course.
c'est ne une pipe
@Gigili LoL Actually there is one thing, that I don't know how to call in English
Excuse me?
where you can refer to a part of something to talk about something else, or similar things.
19:00
@Alenanno Metonymy?
@OtavioMacedo Synecdoche!
I just found it. :D
@Gigili Actually, the sentence is "ceci n'est pas une pipe"
René Magritte
Who??? ... ... joking.
:P
@OtavioMacedo Oh nice, I understand nothing.
What does it mean?
"this is not a pipe"
It means that that is not a "pipe", it's the drawing of a "pipe".
19:04
@Alenanno Exactly
Playing with words... :D
@Gigili When you said that it was not you in your gravatar, I remembered that painting
What's the relevance?
Never mind
(I bet @Alenanno will say "ahahah", @Cerberus will say "haha nice" and I don't care what @OtavioMacedo will say)
@Alenanno Eh, you were supposed to say ahahah
19:09
@Gigili Nope, I hate Apple. If I get a new phone it will be an Android.
You?
@Gigili :D ahah almost... :P
Hey, I was thinking... do you wanna play riddles?
It's been a while
About them... you know, I always played them without any hints.
Good idea. Maybe I'll join you later, I have to do stuff now...
@Gigili giggles
@Cerberus I decided to buy one, was wondering if it's worth the money
19:15
@Alenanno Yes, it's more challenging without hints!
@OtavioMacedo :P... But I mean, I never played the ones with hints and actually, I was a bit puzzled at first.
@Gigili Depends on what your needs are.
@Cerberus Exactly what I was thinking.
1) Viber 2) apps
What is viber?
And which "apps" do you want?
19:22
Adidas miCoach Pacer, for example
@Gigili You're a marathoner?
Hmm well I have no idea, though I would expect there to be equivalent programmes for all the major platforms.
Actually, viber is the most important reason but there are many great apps as well
@OtavioMacedo I should run for an hour everyday
20:04
What does it mean: all brands and trademarks are properties of their respective owners
The italic part
@Cerberus, when you have a minute
@Gigili A property is something you own, here: a possession.
So it means "each brand has an owner".
"Respective" means here that not all brands together are owned by some people, but one brand is owned by one person, the next brand is owned by another person, etc.
@Gigili I see it also exists for Android. By the way, aren't there many other programmes that do the same thing, like Skype?
@Cerberus Thank you so much.
@Cerberus They're not free, I believe?
I think calling from Skype to Skype is free?
There's also Google Voice.
@Cerberus One to one yes.
I don't know, I'm not using them.
@Alenanno OK.
20:13
And it's not really easy to run Skype on the phone and make phone calls, at least not for me
From 3 people up, you pay. :P
@Gigili Hmm no?
@Alenanno Ah OK. And if you want to make a call to a real phone number.
@Cerberus Yes.
@Cerberus No, and With viber almost everything is free if the other part has it installed on the phone as well , like messaging and so on
@Gigili Well, I'm not up to date on these applications. There are many more, but perhaps Viber is the best one? In any case, it exists for Android too.
20:15
@Gigili, there's whatsapp, as well
Android and Iphone are the two major platforms: most major programmes exist for both.
Yes right, I should buy one of them, an Android tablet or an iPhone
Tablet? Why?
I'd just buy an Android phone.
Don't they suck?
@OtavioMacedo Aww, interesting.
No!
Why should they suck?
20:19
They shouldn't but I've heard they do.
Android is the largest, most popular platform now. It is really the platform of the future.
An Android phone like what?
Android is an operating system, like Windows, but on mobile devices.
Android phones are the most popular phones.
Android is a free operating system; Apple tries to restrict and forbid your doing anything.
You can get around that, but still.
Apple uses the operating system Ios on its phones.
Um, honestly I didn't think about Android phones.
Really?
20:22
@Cerberus Yes, it's fun and all of Apple products are stylish.
Really.
A mobile operating system (mobile OS) is the operating system that controls a smartphone, tablet, PDA, or other mobile device. Modern mobile operating systems combine the features of a personal computer operating system with touchscreen, cellular, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS mobile navigation, camera, video camera, speech recognition, voice recorder, music player, Near field communication, personal digital assistant (PDA), and other features. @Gigili Android is open and free, and it has by far the largest user base on modern phones, so the chance that a new application will be developed for Android is very large.
Oh I see, that's very interesting and informative
Poor Symbian
Yeah, that's Nokia's old OS.
But Nokia is going to use the new Windows Phone.
This is one of the best phone-comparison sites.
There is a long list of criteria on the left side that you can fill in.
@Cerberus Great, thanks a lot.
Like screen size, speed, operating system, keyboard yes/no, etc. etc.
20:27
Uhum
Then it will show you all the phones that fit your criteria. They also give a price indication, but it is perhaps better to check that in (web)shops that are available in your country.
What I like more about Apple phones is their appearance
Have you seen the latest Android phones?
All modern phones look more or less the same to me.
And don't forget to watch some Youtube videos of the phones you are considering too.
That will give you an impression.
And don't forget that you can put any cover you like on your phone!
Wow, nobody could help me as much as you did, thank you. I will.
@Gigili It is a pleasure!
21:19
@Cerberus, is it right to transcribe "Lingua Franca" (as it would be spoken in Latin) as /ˈliŋɡwa fɾaŋka/?
21:45
@OtavioMacedo Yes, most probably.
I'm not entirely sure about the a, though.
Nor the r.
Well, I posted an answer to the question about our room name
Oh!
Cool.
Feel free to correct the IPA if you discover something
That would be a good name.
@OtavioMacedo OK I have voted for your proposal: excellent choice.
And of course we should use the Latin transcription!
@Cerberus Thanks!
Yes, the English pronunciation seems a bit odd to me, honestly
21:54
It's so ugly...
