Q: Has the internet had an effect on language change?

JohnJamesSmithHas the internet or the recent dramatic cheapening of long-distance communication in general had an effect on the way language evolves? I would think (purely speculatively) that it reinforces those languages and dialects that already have large numbers of speakers and streamlines geographic varia...

Q: What does a dictionary need so that a computer can use it to determine the grammaticality of a given string?

JohnJamesSmithI would imagine that it would need a full list of all the forms of all the words, but how much information would need to be told to the computer about each word in order for it to know enough to judge if sentences are, say, valid English?

Q: Suppletion vs. missing verb forms

dainichiJapanese is famous for its very few irregular verbs, but there are some cases where verb-forms are missing and other verbs/adjectives are used instead. For example, (in standard Japanese) the verb ある "aru" (to be/exist) does not have a non-polite negative (which would be あらない "aranai") and inste...

Q: What languages lack personal pronouns, and why?

dainichiThe Japanese language lacks personal pronouns in the IE sense. Japanese is very pro-drop, and often sentences will be constructed so personal pronouns do not appear, and the agents which the pronouns would have referred to are implicit from the context. In the first person, however, pronouns do ...

Q: Machine-readable list of abbreviations

atlantisIs there a list of standard abbreviations/acronyms available for computational linguistics tasks? I understand 'standard' is a subjective term here but anything that is not too domain specific(not a list of medical or chemical abbreviations) should be a start for me.

room topic changed to lɪŋˈɡwɪstɪks: wɛlkəm tu lɪŋgwɪstɪks! (no tags)
@Alenanno Hey
I love this chatroom name :D
@Evpok Welcome! I've just changed it!
Ahah
Welcome @GraceNote
Criminy, left me confused for a bit, haha, but very amusing
I think it fits, no?
Perfectly :)
But beware of those creepy SAMPA advocates.
20:54
Ahah
When they come demonstrating, we can talk about it. :D
Note that I cannot necessarily actively participate in this discussion (I have somewhere to be in about 5 minutes), but I am going to be watching it.
Sure! :)
My opinion is simple:
But who watchs cough never mind
Computational Linguistics is without a doubt part of Linguistics. I'd only exclude the questions that require almost or exclusively computer expertise. For example "How do I compile this ..." = NO. "How are vowels highlighted in this speech-analysis program?" = YES
I know this is a kind of superficial analysis, but it's enough to tell you what direction I'd take.
:)
feels alone
I can't but agree. Even if NLP/CL is to be independent, I think that computer -only question are irrelevant.
21:01
I'm not a student in Computational Linguistics so I might miss some nuances, that's why I asked Grace to ask someone with that expertise. Is that what you study or studied, @Evpok?
For these there is already plenty of SEs
@Alenanno I study NLP and cognitive linguistics mainly. I don't think I am an expert yet, just a student, but I think that an independent NLP site is not a good idea.
@Evpok Oh well but you're still into that more than I am. :D
I only used a speech-analysis program once but I forgot how to use it.
If the NLP/CL proposal do gets merged, would you be available for helping me adding some wording about that in the FAQ? I mean, I could do it myself, but two heads are better than one.
@Alenanno ;) In that case, as a more-into-NLP-than-Alenanno person, I hereby proclaim the negotiation for merging NLP/CL proposal into Linguistics
@Alenanno Yes, no problem.
I am guilty of letting Gilles do all the work on FLU FAQ, so I deserve this
Ahah ok... :D I just got an idea. :O If we need space and we don't want to clutter the FAQ too much, we can create some Meta question about it. But we'll see when and if it's needed.
I think we can easily link them from the FAQ
Ah, we'd receive so many new users! :D
135... Not thousands, but still. :P
And maybe less.
@GraceNote @Alenanno How do you think this should be done? A meta poll about it? Is it possible to merge the proposal and the beta?
@Alenanno And I would certainly be more active :)
21:11
It is possible for a merge, we're weighing whether to do it or not
@Evpok Good!
@GraceNote Do just the upper floors decide or there's going to be some survey-kind-of-thing?
Well, we have the evaluate it, which is why I approached you two
@GraceNote Another question: When you decide, should we expect some announcement in Meta?
Probably
I see.
21:14
At least, we both agree that should be done.
Yeah, definitely. I was not surprised to see your question in the beta proposal.
Plus, we already had NLP/CL-related questions
It'd be odd to exclude the possibility of merging the two proposals
So @GraceNote, it's up to you :)
Don't let the poor computational linguists alone.
Ahahah
@Evpok Do you play the flute?
By the way, I like your gravatar. I mean, it's one of those that stuck in my mind, really peculiar. I like the pose ahahah :D
@Alenanno I play the Tin Whistle, the gaita galega, the trombone and I'm learning the Scottish bagpipe. My girlfriend plays the flute, but she won't let me try ;)
@Alenanno Oh thanks a lot blush
You have a sort of "What are you looking at?" look :D XD
ahah
Or
"I can do this all day"
Maybe that more
21:26
In my opinion, the plushy on my shoulder is the most important thing in the picture
You call it "peluche" in French, right?
Right. What's the word in Italian?
Peluche! :D
Same pronunciation
Well, somehow "italianized" but still "peh-loosh"
Oh, languages, you are so fun.
Ahah
We also say "garage"
Ah there was a song that we totally changed from French, which is used to "count" among children, if I remember well
21:31
@Alenanno I really wonder why.
Look
This is the french version
(a part of it)
« Pomme de reinette et pomme d'api
d'api d'api rouge
pomme de reinette et pomme d'api
d'api d'api gris »
While the italian one is
« Ponte ponente ponte pì
tappetà Perugia
ponte ponente ponte pì
tappetà perì »
"d'api rouge" - "tà Perugia"
Ahah
oO
There was also a shift in French. I have been taught tapis tapis rouge :p
Ah yes!
I actually knew that I think
But that page gives another one
21:37
And reine de reinettes, but this is internal to my family
Your family?
Biologic family ;)
Yeah but I was wondering if you had a personal-family-version :D
*Reine des reinettes et pomme d'api*
*Tapis tapis rouge*

I wonder why the * isn't working.

Oh!
I'm not sure if I ever tried one.
And Reine de reinettes is perfect for
Tarte Tatin () is an upside-down tart in which the fruit (usually apples) are caramelized in butter and sugar before the tart is baked. History Research shows that the Tarte Tatin was first created by accident at the Hotel Tatin in Lamotte-Beuvron, France, about 100 miles (160 km) South of Paris, in the 1880s . The hotel was run by two sisters, Stéphanie and Caroline Tatin . There are conflicting stories concerning the tart's origin, but the predominant one is that Stéphanie Tatin, who did most of the cooking, was overworked one day. She started to make a traditional apple pie but...
That pie looks nice!
Why does it says "upside-down"?
21:53
Because it is cooked with the dough on top :)
baked?
Oh I see... It looks a bit weird but I'd try it! XD
I was looking for a site where I could watch (legally) american basketball, and I found out I can see the matches (even if not live) on the NBA site, but they ask for payment :(
Or since you're French...
Ahahah
@Alenanno My grandmother comes from the town where it was created. The traditional recipe involves caramelizing apples with butter and sugar in a pan, then putting the dough on top of it and baking it in an oven
:D I love this French version
@Evpok Wow, that a lot of sugary stuff... :D
Ahah
What would I do without my beret
@Alenanno Good luck ;)
XD stereotype :P
21:59
@Alenanno And that's how I learned what an Onion Johnny was
Onion Johnny is the nickname given to the Breton farmers and agricultural labourers who sell distinctive pink onions door-to-door in Great Britain. They finally adapt this nickname for themselves as ar Johniged or ar Johnniged in Breton language. Although having declined in number since the 1950s to the point where only a few remained, the Onion Johnny was once very common, and with the renewed interest since the late 1990s by the farmers and the public in small-scale agriculture, their numbers have recently made a small recovery. Dressed in striped shirt and beret, riding a bicycle hung...
Ahah
This says "FRENCH FRENCH FRENCH" everywhere
:D
I beg to differ. There is no way this is a baguette.
Ahah
I agree.
But still the general atmosphere... :D
Ahah this is one of my favorites, by the way
Another thing: is it a stereotype or do French bakers take the baguettes under their arms?
Haha
@Alenanno It's a stereotype. They take them into large paper bags
@Evpok :D

^ a little Vday card for y'all (of course the fantastic Jean Berko Gleason must be credited for the wug)
@aediaλ What is that? :P
It's your Valentine's day card, silly!
Just mine or for all Linguistics?
All Ling and English, but you could pretend it is special for you :P
Ahaha
Well thanks for the card, also from the community... which never came to chat, mostly.
22:29
I have been so busy I haven't even had time to come in here to chat lately but I thought I would say hi today!
Ahah thanks for coming
:P
I've always been conflicted about Valentine's Day - I don't like the idea that commercial stuff, flowers, presents really demonstrates anyone's friendship or love, but I do so adore making silly cards.
Uhm, well I don't agree with neither view. I don't think presents are the only important thing, but I don't think presents make it "worse". What I mean is that you don't need to buy someone an expensive car, but a flower is not commercial if you want to give it.
Gifts certainly can be sincere, I just think there tends to be a lot of pressure around it and then it is easy to forget the meaning they were intended to convey (like it can become an expectation that you just have to get something for someone, but it isn't necessarily personal anymore)
Ah yeah, that with I agree. /yoda speak
23:04
I'll go now, night @aedia, and @GraceNote let me know if there are news tomorrow (for me), night! You can ping in the Mods room if you want :)
@Alenanno G'night!

Q: Is it possible to determine genetic relations without external historical data?
