That was the subtractive EQ part. I forgot about the additive EQ part which is to boost the good frequencies and also the ones that will give the audio the sound you want. Now that is it every EQ lesson in a nutshell.

@HenryWHHackv3.0 A general rule is to do as much as you possibly can through cutting frequencies. Boost should be used sparingly or not at all

Also I am hearing because of masking frequencies can cover up other frequencies.

@RoryAlsop Example: Your audio sounds too dark let's say vocals, but you want it to sound brighter. Instead of boosting the higher frequencies you cut out the low frequenies that was masking the higher frequencies. Right?

I was about to say dark and bright is subjective. (For me too much bass and low mids.)

In which case, yes, sort of. You need to make sure each instrument has its own space. To help make sound clearer or brighter, often this means allowing some higher frequencies for the bass (eg bass guitar has some much higher pitched transients which really make the character of a bass - so you may wish to cut other instruments to free them up)

So you might not just cut low freq in that channel, you may also cut higher frequencies from other channels/instruments

While there are general guidelines, it is very iterative and subjective

Slightly Modified: Your audio (Let's say vocals) sounds too dark, because of having too much low end frequencies, but you want it to sound brighter. Instead of boosting the higher frequencies you can try cutting out the low frequenies that was masking the higher frequencies.

I am not looking for an input this time. I just made an edit to reflect what exactly I meant by being too dark in this case.
