Q: How can I contact JK Rowling for permission to publish my sequel for the Harry Potter series?

Sam NI recently watched the entire Harry Potter series in December 2021. I really loved the Harry Potter world and all the characters. Even after days, I couldn't stop myself from thinking about it and I'm pretty happy about the innovative idea that struck me about writing a sequel for the series. I r...

I suppose she might be a regular on this website and reply directly. But in case she isn't and doesn't, I think the usual practice would be to write to her publishers with your request, you'll find their details at the front of one of the books.
You have completed your sequel in a month? That's great! But you should probably allow some people to read it and give you feedback before contacting a publisher.
I don't have experience with fan-fiction, but couldn't one publish the story as fan fiction, without the worry about copyright infrigement?
sorry bud, but i think the best you'll get is putting it on archive of our own as fanfiction. things like harry potter, lotr, star wars(after disney takeover at least), etc, would be quick to sue you if you somehow did publish and start to sell a sequel/expansion of to their universe. i think you've got to stick with calling it fanfiction.
You could also ask whether it is essential for your story to be in the HP universe.

Note that Rowling is happy for people to write fanfiction as long as she doesn't have to read it, it's not sexual, it's not sold for money, etc. (lumendatabase.org/notices/1182#, for example.)
You wrote an entire book in 3 weeks?
As a writer, you should know that "innovative" is at best an ironic and at worst oxymoronic choice of word to describe an idea for an 8th sequel to one of the most popular literary franchises in the world.
@HighPerformanceMark, thank you! I sure hope she notices this and answers me. I thought of waiting for another month before contacting the publishers.
@wetcircuit I have mentally prepared the plot and the storyline only... in a week.. I'm planning to spend an hour everyday to complete the story.. once it's done, I will for sure ask some people to read for feedback as suggested by you. Thank you so much!
@MichalBurgunder yes, that is there... but I personally feel like this story deserves to be an official sequel. If in case my proposal is rejected by the publishers... then I will publish it as a fan-fic for sure.
@Ceramicmrno0b , practically you are right bro. But I'm trying to give it a chance. I've mentally prepared to not feel bad if it is rejected. Since I'm a little confident that the audience would like it for sure, I will put it as a fanfiction in case it is rejected.
@NofP, yes it is actually essential for it to be in the HP universe... the entire storyline was created from a small, very minute plothole... 😅
@PatrickStevens, thank you. I will check it out for sure. Also the story I'm writing doesn't have any sexual scenes 😅😅😅 {not even a kiss}
@TylerH, umm not really. I only prepared a storyline, I have been writing the story for one week. It might take sometime before actually completing it 😅😅😅
@HashimAziz, I will keep that in mind 😅, thank you!
It may be a stupid question, but it sounded weird to me that you decided to write the sequel after watching the movies. Have you reread the books recently? They are what really matter in this case.
@TheLibrarian , not really. But I have been reading few blogs, summaries and watching few facts that were left out in the movie but present in the books, etc. I've also cross verified the sources if they are true.

Oh wow, will read about it. Thank you so much @Presto
@Presto So you basically mean to say that I can publish it as a fan-fic? And how is it not considered as copyright infringement 😅 ?
the entire storyline was created from a small, very minute plothole you say that you haven't read the books and your idea came out after watching the movies... be aware that such "small, very minute plothole" could've been addressed in the books, or even be exclusive to movies and only exists due to the changes made in the adaptation process. In other words, "writing a sequel to a book series" is not the same as "writing a book that's a sequel to a movie series based on a book series"
@SamN yes, you should be fine as long as you won't try to benefit commercially from these. There are literally thousands fan fiction works circulating in the Internet.
@SamN Just to avoid you being under a misapprehension - the comments suggesting fanfics are not copyright infringement are legally gibberish and you should ignore them. Anything which, if it were sold for profit would be copyright infringement, is copyright infringement if you do not. The phenomenon observed is that non-profit derivative works are rarely chased, but not never.
I have asked a question over at law whether one could write a novel essentially set in the Harry Potter universe with a few minor name changes.

Just wait until 70 years after she dies. No need to get her permission with such permissive and well thought out Copyright law.
There are SO MANY rabid Potter-heads that they're probably equal to infinite monkeys on infinite typewriters, and one of them has already written word-for-word whatever innovative fan fic you have in mind.
50 Shades of Grey was fundamentally a Twilight fanfic, don't underestimate the possibility of writing an "unrelated" story and make it big in your own right.
@veryverde Depends what you mean by "publish". Fanfic isn't a free for all. It happens that as long as you don't devalue the intellectual property and don't profit from it, the publisher will generally leave it alone. But you might always receive a cease and desist, and there probably isn't much you can do about it if you write about very specific elements of someone else's IP. For more detail, you'd have to speak to an IP lawyer.
@Separatrix, Oh wow. I didn't know that. Thank you! I really needed that motivation 😅
