@Shalvenay OK, back and ready to go

okiedokie

I head west, at a brisk pace.

btw: Malik did notice when searching Tah'ria's body that she's of pale skin, as one would expect from someone with significant elven blood in her.

Yeah, disappointed in how that turned out, but they did attack me. Not pleased that I was not more assertive with trying persuasion. gaaah, I may have some learning to do as paladin ...

Malik continues to head west briskly, but with shady figures closing on him from behind as he does (roll a Perception check please)

3:06 AM
Are they mounted?

I'll take a six second break and heal myself for 5 pts (one expenditure of lay on hands) and proceed

The figures behind you are not mounted, but you do notice that fairly close in front of you, and heading your direction, is a large caravan consisting of wagons pulled by large, shaggy, horned animals, with large, greenish-grey skinned folks in rough clothing riding more of those animals, as if forming a vanguard for the caravan. (if you want a mental image of the beasts in question: think American bison)

I will increase speed to try and catch up to the wagons, making no effort to conceal myself. When close enough I'll hail the rear most wagon.
wait, are they coming at me or heading the same way I am? Unclear from description.

(sorry, heading towards you)

3:11 AM
OK, never mind, I'll try to circle to the north a bit, to go around them and not obstruct their passage.
Objective being that once past them I try to put them between me and my pursuers.
HP now 15.

You veer north slightly... (make another Perception check)

does that beast look like the statue?
(just a thought as I compare the figurine and the beasts of burden ...)

You see that one of the scouts on the north flank of the caravan is in your path, and yes, the shaggy beast you see the scout riding resembles the figurine quite closely.

3:14 AM
I move to avoid him to the north. Do I recognize his race/clan/type?

You have heard legends of hardy, stout folk with greenish skin who roam the steppes with their beasts, stopping in the occasional town to resupply but almost never seen by other than frontier townsfolk, scouts, and post riders...the names associated with these legends are not coming to your mind though.

3:18 AM
OK, my aim is to put them between me and pursuit. Is my evasion of the scout working or not?

The scout notices you, but seems to be letting you pass so far, giving you a small nod of the head as they go along.

I wave and smile.

The scout rides onward....but it seems that your pursuers have noticed the caravan as well... (roll Perception)

> here is my plan. The idea is to try and get one of the wagons to block the line of sight between my pursuers and me and then I change tack, heading toward the rear of the caravan and in so doing keep the wagon between me and them.

> with that hopefully set up, I'll be trying to catch up to the rear caravan scout / guard.

You notice that your pursuers have veered off further to the north than you, trying to outflank you with a lead pursuit instead of tailchasing you in a pure-to-lag pursuit position

Not sure if that is a hide/stealth kind of check ... I am trying to be clever here.
Their move helps me since I need to turn south to get the wagon between me and them, visually.
or wagons.
Now that I have passed the north scout.
I guess I am mostly headed south or southwest to set up the relative motion problem.

Malik zigzags back southward, his pursuers continuing to loop around to stay on his flank

At this point am I in trail of the caravan, south of the rear gurad?
sourth westish, I guess.
I wish I could draw this for you on a dry erase board ... but it seems to be mostly getting across.

You are zagging back towards the scouts at the back of the caravan at this point, yes. (another Perc check please)

3:28 AM
No, not zigzagging ... but approaching the trail scout

Hailing the trail scout.
"Hail, I have news for your caravan master"

You don't realize that you've cut the curve too tightly until you're almost face-to-face with one of the trailing scouts, who wheels their mount around and dismounts as you are hailing them." "Oh? A herald? We...uh..." *and then shouts something unintelligible into the caravan, causing the caravan to slow to a stop "What is this news?"
Their voice has a gruff, guttural accent to it, and they are clearly a rough-hewn figure, their skin somewhat darker than that of the first scout you saw and their leathers patched repeatedly.

3:33 AM
I believe I have an artifact of interest to your people, one that got me attacked a short time ago.
Will you take me to him?
Do I need to roll persuasion?
> did I notice how many pursuers?

"An artifact?" You hear another unintelligible call into the caravan. A short while later, an older, somewhat crooked figure comes out, leaning on a polehammer (lucerne hammer) with a battered-looking, faintly carved head. His voice has hints of the guttural tone in it, despite lacking the booming nature of the calls into the caravan "Uh...you said you found an artifact of ours? May I see it?" (roll Religion)

(also, maybe 3-4 pursuers)

> open my pack and remove the figurine
Here it is, sir, I think this may be something related to your people. Is this of interest to you?
> put on best winning smile.
>Present figurine to him
My religion check stunk to about high heaven, it appears. :)

3:39 AM
You think this figure must be some sort of warlock, or the likes...he's not like any priest you've ever seen before, or heard of. Their eyes light up immediately when they see it, though, and they start talking in an eager tone "Ah yes, one of the beast-figures we use in ceremonies! They do occasionally wander a bit, like the beasts themselves. May I ask where you found this?"

It had been buried in the ground, near the place called Orc Rock by the local people.
It is a place that i deem has been used for religious ceremonies.
Some people dug it up, and then attacked me.
They were not like your people ... I think they were from the town to the east of here.

"Oh, those folks." He seems to scowl, but not at you "They seem to think that theft and flight are a way of life, in many cases...last time we ran into them, a scout of ours shot two of them who got caught running off with a bull rautha."

> I nod
"Of the two who attacked me, one fled, and one died by my hand. These others are pursuing me, and will doubtless call me murderer."

"As to the rock you name, we were just headed there ourselves, as your intuition that it is a ceremonial place is correct -- there are several of such scattered across these fields and grasslands. What brought you in to the rock in search of the figurine?"

"The death of a student of religion."

3:46 AM
(not death -- he did make it home :P but had to recover from unknown injuries)

"It seems that a young man Trauvin was investigating such figurines as these and it cost him his life or his freedom."
"Sorry, an attack on a student of religion."
"It cost him a beating."
> I grmiace

"Ah." He nods and thinks to himself "Do you know where he was last seen at, or how to get a hold of him?"

"Sorry, been a long day, what with sword play and being chased by those who mean to take my life."

OK, I'll propose to the orc shaman that we head for the northern town after the ceremnoy, and I'll baically give him the figurine. (IIRC, he was examining it when we were attaked)

You sleep the night, blissfully unaware of the commotion that's gone on. Come morning, you awaken to find the bandit-girl from before, badly bruised, beaten, and in a heavily stained dress, her veil gone to reveal medium-bronze skin, tied up in the back of a wagon and moaning softly still.

I try to gage the tenor of the camp. Do I feel that having a word with her will upset my hosts?

An Orc boy of roughly 12 or 13 looks to be talking to an old lady about what happened. The camp is reasonably calm at this point.

I'll listen for the moment. look around for a drink of water.

4:42 AM
Various folks involved in the ceremonial rites at the rock are preparing for the ritual, and you take a drink from your waterskins while this is all happening. Unfortunately, you don't know their tongue, so you can't really make out any of it, although you can see the elderly orc woman nodding along and patting the orc boy on the back and shoulder, then sending him off to his parents.

I will be polite and observe the ceremony, taking such pains as I can not to intrude.

You observe politely and patiently; although the ceremonies do seem quite odd to your eyes, you can definitely still feel the spiritual significance of them in your own heart.

before it's over I'll do a Divine sense.
Do I sense any fey celestial or fiend presence?

You can sense the general hallowing of the location, and the power of the rites themselves, but no explicit presence ever is summoned.

Ok, I figured as much, glad for the interesting experience.

(do you still want to try to ask either your hosts or the captive girl about what happened?)

I"ll ask my host if I they mind if I speak with her.

4:47 AM
The old orc lady walks up to you, speaking in a slightly broken and accented common "I think it'd be better if I explained. Her tongue is forked, lies on one side, venom on the other."

I'll leave well enough alone then.
My hope is that the caravan heads to the original town (where old priest is) and I can maybe converse with orc shaman a bit on the way.

"The boy I was talking to caught the glint of her steel by the firelight, and went at her with a rolling pin. Turns out, she had tried to steal the figurine back, and was getting ready to shank you 'tween the shoulder blades as you lay there in your bedroll."

"The I owe this young man my thanks."
bow
"Can he understand my tongue, or the tongue of the giants?"

The boy smiles and nods to you from a nearby wagon, having at least somewhat gleaned the meaning of your words

> hold out my hand, look him in the eye, and put my other hand over my heart.

4:53 AM
"We do try to teach the young whatever of the common-tongue we pick up from our trading-times"

> smile and say thank you
> if he takes my hand, I offer firm grip and a solemn shake

The Orc boy smiles back and puts his fist over his heart in the salute of his people, then slowly, tentatively, takes your hand, giving it a firm shake after a short delay.

* I bow and smile again

The Orc boy gives you one final smile before being beckoned back to join his parents as night falls again.

(kk)
(when do you want to wrap this up?)

As soon as I figure out what' s in the purse.
And introduce the old priest to this orc shaman ... unless there's more to do between now and that town

Your rustling through the purse has found various talismans and tokens, none of which you recognize. The rest of the journey back to town is uneventful, the rustlers having gotten the message not to screw around with Orcs, for now at least.
You also find phials of various liquids in the purse, but the markings are badly worn, to the point where you decide they're best left alone.

Before we get to the town, I would like to offer the young orc his pick of one of the talisman's, as a token of friendship, but only under old lady's supervision. (Don't want to cause offense).

The old lady nods her head at the offer, and the young boy picks out what looks to be an ancient Elven charm of swiftness that the girl had kept in her purse.

And I offer him my name in this fashion:
I tap my chest.
"I am Malik Mabir."
Smile
I look to him:
"and you are?"

5:02 AM
"Good meet Malik." He taps his chest with a smile in return "Baol'zur'ak" then states something unintelligible, which a nearby orc translates "he means 'of' Swift-Horn clan'"

I tap my holy symbol with my hand'
> and I think this is a good stopping point...
"I will pray to valkur for your good fortune."

"And I offer to spirits for yours." He then asks curiously, peering at the holy symbol "Shaman?"

"traveler of the oceans"

"Walks-on-water, then."
