True.

What don't people like with my answer at softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/795/… ???

LBUUNTU.... thats one jokerdino dosen't know about ;p

@ConfusedStack: you're assuming the downvoters hang out here
@ConfusedStack: AU mod, misspelling Ubuntu is a pet peeve of his

Don't they? This is a private beta for Software Recommendations at SE.
ok, I see it.

12:17 AM
@ConfusedStack: not everyone hangs out on chat

@ConfusedStack before you edited it it was only two links. No answer. As it is, it could use a lot of improvement.

It was two links to software which answered the OP's question, and said what the software was used for. If you have suggestions to improve it, please post in the comments.

facepalm

@ConfusedStack this is a questions and answers site, not a link collection. We want to have the answer in the answer, not behind a link
See this meta post for tips on writing an answer

12:32 AM
how about now?

@ConfusedStack That is much better, but I suggest you remove GIMP since it has already been answered
and answers are better when they suggest less software.

@Seth: I thought the convention here is one answer a recommendation?
(which feels wierd to me, coming from 2/3 of the trilogy ;p)

@JourneymanGeek no, this is currently under debate, with about equal votes for each last time I checked
When I see someone answer twice, I systematically comment to request them to unify their answers

@Gilles: eh, thats one of those things. This place has someone unique needs

12:47 AM
I'd like to make it a policy, because otherwise people go “two answers → twice the rep → screw you, I'm posting two answers”

@Gilles: I did that for one answer with two, very distinct software products since it would be confusing otherwise.
I'd happily CW one. Its not about the reputation, it was entirely about the utility of it

I tend to downvote the second answer, as a small incentive
For those who wanted my data processing scripts, I added them to the question

Q: A call to arms: review these answers!

GillesAnswers of this site are of very disparate quality. We have a lot of bad answers; some have already been improved or removed, but others are lingering. We're in the process of determining what to do with poor answers. We need to get an idea of the scope and nature of the problem. This site curr...

@Gilles: I donno, due to the nature of the questions here, I suspect some questions would end up having a laundry list of answers. Its not like a 'how do I do X" question where its a process. I'm also pondering readability - if I'm posting 2 different options I've used, with pros and cons, its going to get messy fast. At some point though, I suppose it can get abusive, if someone posts 5-6 answers to a question

Why would you recommend multiple software? Surely one is the best, so why mention the others at all? Unless there are reasons to prefer one and reasons to prefer the other! In which case both should be mentioned in the same answer, which should additionally explain when to use which.

@Gilles: in that case - he was using evernote, and wanted a client for it. I suggested a evernote client (though, one of the other answers for another evernote client was better), and google keep as an alternative to evernote
If it had been two evernote clients, I'd have posted them as the same answer

1:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek not exactly, but like I said, the fewer the better ;)

Q: Should we really attach the "desktop-client" tag to all questions for desktop use?

IzzyI just stumbled upon this in our review queue: Is it really useful/necessary to point this out for every question? Don't the other tags make the issue clear? Or is this a good thing for filtering by tags ("Well, I need a desktop-client for icons" – huh?)?

Urgs. Why don't we have an "improve" button on tag-wiki edit reviews? Can someone please fix softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/tags/foss/info – it's "free AND open source", not "free OR open source".

I asked Arqade if (a) any of them would be willing to join if game recs were on topic and (b) if they'd be willing to add game recs from SR to LAZERS (the bridge's feedbot)
The... response...
was extremely negative

2:07 PM
@kalina SR aim's isn't to replace other StackExchange communities who provide recommendations. SR's scope is to be complementary with other SE site.

@Fractaliste yes, and Arqade doesn't allow game recommendations
so SR allowing them would be complimentary to Arqade's gaming resource
however, on Arqade there is such a negative stigma attached to recommendations that they'd rather not sign up for SR
with that in mind, considering we have no experts to draw upon, it might probably be better for SR to not allow gaming questions
I know there's already a group that doesn't want them
personally I'm in the group that does
but I don't want them so badly that I'm going to fight for them without knowing we'd have the expertise to answer them

Ok I thought that recommendations were tolerated on Arcade. What do you mean about "Lazers" ?

Lazer's is their feed bot
posts new questions into chat
more specifically, it would have been the GTFO bot that would post these questions
(gaming topics from outside)
but on second thought, it probably wouldn't be a good idea

To paraphrase what I said before, it's dangerous to invite a rec-hostile community to a rec-only website. I hope that you guys can bring something new to the table that we hadn't considered years ago when we banned the topic wholesale after 1,500 gamerec questions.

Its depend of the amount of question maybe...

2:14 PM
the amount of questions we get and the amount of questions that meet our quality requirements will be two very different things, IMO
that's why it's important to establish exactly where the bar for quality is now

In particular, things that concern me and don't seem to have been tackled yet through a cursory search on your meta site through Stack Mobile:

- distinguishing good recommendations of poor software from bad recommendations of good software (or: voting as popularity contest)
- deduplication
I like the aggressive approach on quality but feel nervous about 1 recommendation per answer.
I'll be giving it a try in a couple days when it opens up, anyway!

And Artificial intelligence one's : area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/57719/… which open 1 day after
It's quite impressive...

2:42 PM
gotta get that answer acceptance value up
not sure that's entirely important for a site like this one
but still...

D_VAs the days on Private Beta are passing by, we have been seeing quite a few questions which might have a proper solution(s) which could be found by just making a simple Google (or whatever search engine you prefer) search for the same. It even rhymes! :P
@AngeloNeuschitzer It is much much too broad. Hundreds, if not thousands of games will meet those requirements. There hardly are any requirements. As many many people have said, if this site is going to succeed we need specific questions not broad "list type" questions. This is why I was against game recommendations in the first place, 90% of them are going to be too broad.

I would actually appreciate some support for that
since my aim is to determine clearly if this topic of question is on or off topic

in that case downvote removed
I have nothing against games, except that most of them will be too broad like this and, as you can see, the community refuses to close those. It's things like this that are going to ruin this site.. and potentially make me leave (but that's another story)
You're a gamer, please tell me that question is too broad.

@Seth that is probably too broad
the point of this experiment is to categorically state, using real world examples, that games are either on topic or off topic

@Seth I think there is a misunderstanding. I was referencing your statement linking this (not game related) question: softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/335/…

@Seth Full ack! And why do I always think of the comparison of the "man who needs to read a book" and the "man who needs a book to read"?

4:45 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer oh.. ok. I'm borderline on that question. I personally don't think it is clear enough, but others seem to, so I just left it with a downvote. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Seth worth considering that because these posts were deleted on Arqade doesn't make them "junk"

@kalina I'm not saying it does, but if you flood this site with game recommendations it'll become junk.
@Izzy Precisely my point.

Most of these questions have 30+ upvotes on them
They were only removed because recommendations are off topic on Arqade
I am taking care in my process and I'm posting on meta so that people have the chance to gang up on me and stop me before I post anything
hence:
9 mins ago, by kalina
I would actually appreciate some support for that

votes don't count on questions like those. They're just popular, and if we flood this site with game recommendations it'll go downhill FAST. It's really hard to make a good game recommendation question.
I'm okay with 5, but no more.

@Seth Not really, it just needs to be narrowly defined

4:48 PM
That makes a mess.

That physics FPS question seems like a good candidate to prove this could work

@kalina I haven't seen a narrowly defined one yet.
Prove me wrong, please.

Oxinabox Private Beta Notice: this question is a test question for Would video game related question be ontopic? that, in my opinion, is narrowly defined enough to be useful

@Seth I'm even going so far as to say "game recommendations should go 'somewhere else'". When I read "software recommendations", I think of "serious business" (forgive me), not "playing around".

it's on the upper edge of what I would call acceptable though

4:49 PM
And yes, I know, basically games are software as well.

there's no "basically" about it
give me one definition where a computer game is not software

@Izzy I agree 100% with that. The more I look at this site recently, the uglier it gets. We're here for business, not play.

however, don't take me wanting to do this test as me being an evangelist for game recs being on topic

and people are turning it into a everything goes game recommendation site.

I personally do not mind which way this goes

4:50 PM
@kalina question of definition. I use my computer for work. But I also consider Windows a "gaming console" #D

I would, however, rather we get to the conclusion that they're on topic or off topic before we go public

I don't mind which way it goes if the community is willing to close the bad game rec questions, but I don't see that happening.

because if you think me raising a bunch of questions in private beta messy, you'll have a shock when the site goes public
Right now, there is no evidence that game recs were ever on topic
Entering public beta with them off topic makes life a lot easier
granted, I will generate a lot less rep

@kalina, I like your approach. I see a similar issue on the Website vs WebApp debate. That needs some serious work before beta is over.

@kalina Precisely.

4:51 PM
@Enjabain I'm glad somebody gets it

This is just a friendly heads up that I am going to be extensively trying to define and establish the test case for game recommendations later on tonight, using material that has previously been deleted from Arqade (gaming.stackexchange.com)...

As stated in chat: this experiment isn't about me, this experiment is about us. Do you really want to enter public beta with game recs still on topic if we're going to ultimately decide they're off topic? Or would you rather find out right here, right now, what we're doing with them? Me "making a mess" during private beta to help us come to a consensus is nothing in comparison to the world+dog+internet+therest posting game rec questions on here. — Flyk 41 secs ago
but yeah, anyway, @seth did you get a chance to look at all the other meta posts I've made today?
