> 8,546 voters were eligible, 1,865 visited the site during the election, 1,209 visited the election page, and 589 voted.

That's a pretty terrible statistic. Hopefully the results are better this year.
Overall at least
The visited vs voted isn't as terrible, but its still pretty bad.

Nominations end in 4hours. We are 6 candidates:
Hunh the SE Chat does not unfurl giphy?
dang it
Question for the current mods: Is the current election gonna replace you or is it an add to the team? Finding it weird that I don't seem to see current mods put their name in the hat for reelection. Did I miss something?
Elections add to the team
It's lifetime volunteer (unless removed for malfeasance obviously)
also I wonder if ! will embed that giphy let's find out
nope
16:20
@Unionhawk You can also step down whenever if you so choose
Which my fellow mods keep reminding me of for some reason

@Unionhawk So to follow: I'm gonna guess its 1 but how much seats are up to be added?
Like how much people will be elected?
@Fredy31 It's 2 slots, it's on the election page
@Fredy31 It appears that way, but we can do it manually lol
^ From @Fredy31 lol
@Tacoタコス what is this magic? And if it is, where can I apply to hogwarts?
@Unionhawk This seems to be the case every year?
@Fredy31 I just went to the page and downloaded the image, then uploaded it here. Or is that sarcasm I'm detecting? lol 😂
@Tacoタコス That's just a coincidence, the CM team periodically asks if we need more help and if so how much more
18:47
@Tacoタコス Yeah that was my guess that you just uploaded it
They can run a 3 seat election or a 1 seat election just as easy
In this case, we actually reached out to them about an election, which is also an option
That was more than a couple weeks ago so I forgot
in my defense
Sometimes we'll just pull runner up candidates from the previous election if it was recent enough. That's what happened with @Unionhawk and @Dragonrage. It's happened before, too.
@Wipqozn Oh wow, so they thought of everything there too it would seem?
There always seems to be something for everything on SE lol
18:49
that's the power of opavote, you can just run the same ballots again with different parameters, like "what if we selected 5"
although I think SE uses their own instance of OpenSTV
@Unionhawk Yeah i read the vote thing and its an interesting method
STV rocks
Never played with it lol
It's well suited for a proportional result in a multi-member body
Much better than FPTP, but then again, literally everything is. FPTP is hot garbage.
18:52
None of you know the Borda Count related pain I have to deal with lol (a ranked choice counting method that is not designed to select a multimember body, but is often used to do so because it's cheap and easy to count)
If I understood right: Take the candidate that is in first, put him as IN, then take all his votes and give that their vote, instead of valuing 1, values like .75 (so his final score is barely above the 'elected' post) Give the remaining of the vote to the voters 2nd choice. See now who comes up first except the one elected
@Unionhawk Should just pull names out of a hat.
@Fredy31 I'm less familiar with Meek STV than I am Scottish but this is roughly right
if there is not enough votes to elect another user, remove the one with the worst score and give his voters to their second option
CGPGreys video is still relevant
He's got a whole series on it
18:54
First past the post is so garbo but those elected with this system will not change a system where they win lol
Yes.See also: The Liberals in Canada.
ask this to canadians that were promised a voting reform by trudeau and since the election, not a peep
"well change the system if elected! Oh, wait, nvm"
@Fredy31 Actually they did look into it, with a hugely flawed "survey" intended to give them an out on it.
in Scottish, an election threshold is set based on the number of ballots and the number of seats to fill. The rounds proceed by first taking everyone who has met the threshold, electing them, keeping whatever the necessary percent is needed to keep them above the threshold, then transferring the remainder to second choices. Repeat until you are unable to elect anyone else in this fashion, then begin eliminating last place candidates. Repeat this process until you have elected n candidates
I wonder when someone will pull the trigger and try to make a direct democracy, where everybody votes on everything
via the internet, even if that would NOT work
*says the guy about to be in an online election
in LESS THAN 4 MINUTES
18:56
I think a direct democracy would be a nightmare, although then again so is the current system
It's great because OTHER than your first choice, which matters a great deal, and is often advantageous to boost someone you like but think might not get it, it's hard to game out other than just selecting your honest choices
Basically I don't think the average person is informed enough on all issues to vote. We elect people so they can take the time to get informed on it all.
Of course in practice the voting usually just comes down to which lobbyist comes to them with the biggest bag of money...
What was the old video? Its like an old indian guy that is just 'Democracy is the power of the people, by the people, for the people... but the people are retarded'
@Fredy31 lol
19:00
> election begins in 59 minutes
😂
Yep idk I read in one hour and figured out it would be 'at the end of that hour'
It said it begins in an hour an hour ago lol
not 'more than an hour'
I'm in a democracy, I'm retarded
Just thought that was funny lol
19:18
It's a tutorial on creating a decentralized application, and uses a voting application as the focus.
Was an interesting read and watch for anyone else interested.
19:58
3 minutes until we are all ennemies for the next few days
Get out there and VOTE!

LET THE GAMES... BEGIN
Probably nostalgia just for me, but...
Every, god damn, hockey tournament I played in, this was the song you were hitting the ice on
I have no clue why because its from a basketball movie
probably because Spacejam was recent back then
