@JourneymanGeek sup, did your router work well now ?

@yagmoth555-GoFundMeMonica I trust the current version :D
So yes
I'm planning on a new/more robust build next year - 20.04 has ZFS and building something with a failover boot disk sounds fun
(zfs send the main drive every so often, snapshots for config changes...)
@yagmoth555-GoFundMeMonica practically - its as flexible as you want it to be, with the tradeoff being, well. you do everything the hard way
I did use firewalld and its front ends (and some small helper scripts for port forwarding)

7:05 PM
it's pretty cool
you can probably use some script like fail2ban, and other stuff too to make country block to block incoming noise, kind of stuff you can't with soho router

7:58 PM
that's the big advantage
and it will work on any system you can run a general purpose linux on and has 2 network ports
If you're building your own, the ars technica guide I referenced is probably a 'better' starting point - they use proper iptables rules and bind9
mine's dumbed down/simplified a bit

8:10 PM
I can recommend the hardware I use or something like it
J1800s are the 'standard' but the core i3/5 varients is what I'd go for

8:32 PM
ok, yeah
I have a small system, mini-ITX, I would probably go that route, like such board; jetwaycomputer.com/NF796.html
I seen some that are passive cooling, which is nice, so it run without noose, and is small
but I will go check the article of course
like that one, fanless; onlogic.com/imb-155

9:23 PM
Aliexpress is good for that ;p
I got mine from a company called qotom
much smaller than a mini ITX, slient, comes with a case and optionally storage (I went with 128gb cause it was cheap, but you hardly need any), ram (standard laptop, I went with 8 but that's overkill) and wifi

oh cool ! didnt knew it was good for that

the only thing I wish it had was a battery backup

9:46 PM
I have a bit of an idea for that but ehh
we replaced our drier and that was the main reason I had power outages :D
