12:01 AM
got in a fight with your cat?

12:27 AM
morning

oi
it's really hot

dumps Liquid Oxygen on @FalconMomot

yay
it's about 28 degrees in here and I have no air conditioner nor any way to put one in.
stupid casement windows
no A/C in the office either

12:34 AM
0_0

1:04 AM
What
Even

@cole it could always be worse...

True
I mean
2 days ago, by cole
PAPA'S GETTING A PENIS
let's be real here.

None of that makes sense to me.

1:19 AM
that isn't helped by the fact that the paper lacks rigor
but basically he found a way to achieve (malware) persistence inside the UEFI firmware
generically, if I'm reading correctly

Well - that's not...good

... and that, from userspace in windows with no elevated token, as long as you can force a reboot somehow.

I wish that stuff made more sense to me

read more of those papers :P

Yeah its all greek to me

1:24 AM
most people have no idea about that kind of stuff
don't feel bad :P
and I mean... that isn't my bug, it took a team of 4 at MITRE

MITRE is near me
and by near, I mean like an hour away.

nice

1:42 AM
Someday I'll figure out my true passion

@cole ^ maybe that?

haha
Attacking people?

@falcon it's not too hot over here, but monday will suck.

@Jacob I find it hot when it gets to 23 C out

27 C here today

1:53 AM
about that here too

and I walked 9.5 miles today.

0 for me

I think we have a but more humidity here in MA than WA

Seattle is coastal.

Luckily I was right on the water in Boston today though
nice breeze

1:54 AM
only 45% RH today

if there is a hill or a depression between you and where you're going, if you walk a round trip, you walk uphill both ways. FYI
a light that burns twice as bright burns 1/8th as long, as well

have you ever thought about potentially going to jail?

Oh god, somebody doesn't want me on their IT team.

2:12 AM
I suddenly really don't like that guy

burn

"I am a Certified ITIL v2 graduate"
stopped reading

I knew two of those. One was a middle manager; the other did it under duress.

@FalconMomot Heh, he says your thinkings are bullshit!

heheh
I've seen him give a few right answers... it's a terrible pity that he's an ITIL zombie.
I've worked for a company where one of the interview questions is about ITIL, and they are actually looking for an eyeroll or a groan

2:44 AM
@FalconMomot Coming from a warm climate is nice in that regard.

eh. If you're not afraid you should be. In fact, be terrified.

@JourneymanGeek what?

what? why that?
relatedly, go to jail.

@FalconMomot: Meh, I'd plan for my building collapsing, and maintaining continuity, of my budget allowed it

2:53 AM
you should be planning for your prolonged confinement.

@FalconMomot Why?

Why?
(I do not follow @JourneymanGeek at all)

@FalconMomot Why would I plan for prolonged confinement ?

not you. @JourneymanGeek, since he should be in jail.

@FalconMomot for what?

2:55 AM
I'm sure some suitable thing can be found.

@FalconMomot ok... I'm going back to shoving things in shelves.

@Jacob some of those things had better be scotch.

@FalconMomot Not of age.

Whoever raised the age above 18 here should be thrown in jail

o0
@FalconMomot: been there, done that. In fact I've literally served confinement.

2:58 AM
you?!

@FalconMomot The federal government forced the states to do it by blackmailing federal road funds.
The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 (23 U.S.C. § 158) was passed on July 17, 1984 by the United States Congress. It punished every state that allowed persons below 21 years to purchase and publicly possess alcoholic beverages by reducing its annual federal highway apportionment by ten percent. While this act did not outlaw the consumption of alcoholic beverages by those under 21 years of age, seven states and Washington D.C. extended its provisions into an outright ban. These states are: Alabama, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. The minimum drinking age...

@Jacob I know. But they are not one person.

@FalconMomot I'm unsure of the motivation.

@Jacob I didn't ask why; I merely stipulated that the mastermind of such an absurd measure (which leaves the US with the highest such age in the world, for no apparent reason) should be thrown in jail.

3:04 AM
@FalconMomot ok then, but he passed away.

In any event I sure hope the federal government doesn't try that to force marijuana prohibition.
though I think national legalization is much more likely, to be honest
but that law is absurd, being an affront to the spirit of the constitution (which is at this point a practically meaningless document it appears) and also bad policy

@FalconMomot It really shouldn't be a schedule 1 drug at the minimum

yeah I don't think I know a single person who is actually addicted to it
and almost everyone I know who uses it does so irregularly and infrequently

@FalconMomot anything can be addicting

and it has lots of recognized medical purposes, and its use doesn't cause any apparent medically recognized harm, so it meets none of the schedule 1 criteria
in either canada or the US

3:16 AM
It's statistical insignificance blown up by cultural expectations.

3:44 AM
@FalconMomot It's especially insane that THC is schedule 1, but cocaine is schedule 2.

Yeah, that is complete bunk.
I've seen a lot more harm come out of cocaine, obviously
! I got the bronze DNS badge

@Jacob: you need to wander up to Beth's and take in the local color

nope I have no idea how to autoexpand badges

bethscafe.com 24 hour swill

@FalconMomot Sure, but some Coca tea is pretty harmless.

3:48 AM
@freiheit my grandmother used to grow opium poppies to make tea; that was harmless too

Dosage matters a lot. :)

indeed

4:07 AM
sigh

howl

4:47 AM
nice
it's like burping

5:13 AM
@FalconMomot Ugh, do you know if we can use the parking spaces on the side of the office building? (I know you don't have a car)

@Jacob just park on the street and feed the meter, your car will be stolen soon enough

@RyJones nooooo

I mean, seriously, you share pavement with a metal bar that attracts lots of cops
anyway, you need to go up to beth's and soak in the nightlife

@RyJones just ate

it's 24 hours and ready when you are.
my daughter just drove through town, we went over to 13 coins and had lunch. It was nice.

5:18 AM
@Jacob To the best of my knowledge yes and why are you there?

he's trying to figure out Monday

lol
he'll loosen up soon enough.

doubtful

no further comment.
ugh, so bored

go to Beth's

5:20 AM
what's there?

drunk people, surly service, crayon art on the walls

you don't make that good of a case

actually, it would be a hell of a hike for you without a car. Jacob should take you.

I've a car2go membership.

fine, 13 coins is 24 hour fine dining. I just had the filet with shredded crab on a bed of spinach, with a calamari appetizer.

5:21 AM
but unless people are actually going I'm not going to put on pants and go all the way out to fremont.

plus, 13 coins serves alcohol, Beth's doesn't. Beth's is a dive. Biggest claim to fame is 12 egg omelets.

ugh, dives :P

If I hadn't just eaten, I'd say let's meet at one of them, but I did, so… not tonight

some other night. there are lots of nights.
do you know if there is decent 24 hour coffee?
I'll keep 13 coins in mind next time I find myself at work at 3 in the morning without having eaten lunch or dinner again though.

@FalconMomot I can't think of anywhere that's both 24 hours and decent.

5:27 AM
not even a 24-hour starbucks?

Unless you're looking for the social experience, I'd make the iced stuff.

I go to coffee shops mostly so I am not at home

<3 iced stuff

I didn't know we had so many

5:29 AM
My mom considers it unworthy of the name coffee however

@FalconMomot on monday.
@FalconMomot You could call me.

@Jacob I could yes but what for? I'm not going to annoy people at 3 in the morning over that.

so, looks like three technically in Seattle

@RyJones yeah, I looked... they are in the weirdest places (except for the airport ones)
you'd think there would be such a thing on cap hill but apparently not

5:32 AM
no, the streets kind of roll up around 0100
Seattle, amazingly, has a smaller 24 hour scene than Moscow, Idaho

I've noticed
though in calgary the streets roll up around 2200

MCS is usually open until 0400 or 0500 if there is anything interesting going on and you're cool enough not to start a ruckus

Last time I was there on saturday they were out of there at 0000

yeah, depends on who is behind the counter.

5:39 AM
@falcon doesn't really bother me. What hours do you normally work

@Jacob random

morning

5:57 AM
if you don't know return path routeability is a requirement for internetworks, you shouldn't be deploying internetwork routers.

@falcon sf question?

yes.
of course.

@FalconMomot link?

sure, it's on the front page

@RyJones just got back from dinner at an Indian restaurant here in Seattle...
they closed on us at 10:30pm

6:12 AM
@ewwhite ouch.

walking back through downtown to the hotel, and everything is closed....
ON A SATURDAY NIGHT

the scene is lame, bro.
I miss how 24/7 the bay area is

I've gone to a speakeasy here and found a few late night things

speakeasies still exist?

@ewwhite you're in seattle? if you're still here tomorrow maybe we should all meet up.

6:14 AM
I am... was in Portland earlier.

well my congratulations on making the laudable choice to leave portland.

here with wife... repairing relationship due to too much ServerFaulting

hahahaha
sure, that's why :D

I love Portland... late night scene, foodie-heaven... Voodoo Doughnuts

we should definitely pass a law giving tax advantages or something to late-night businesses
also in Calgary

6:15 AM
Voodoo Doughnuts and Powell's city of books

and in almost every other city I've been in for any length of time

Chicago has 1am and 4am liquor licenses...
coveted.

so when and where are we meeting?
I suggest 13 coins for the where, it's at Denny and Boren.

I just got back from a Walgreen's that was closing
Seriously Hampton roads was more 24/7 than this...

Looking out the window... there's a Ferris Wheel rotating...

6:19 AM
what hotel?

@ewwhite What hotel are you in? I can probably peer in with binoculars see it from my apartment.

Some low-end joint.
We're at the Four Seasons

ಠ_ಠ

that's about three blocks from where I work.

It's only 600$ a night
but yes I can see that from here.

6:23 AM
$600/night!?! That's expensive!

@ewwhite That was my response when you said this:
3 mins ago, by ewwhite
Some low-end joint.

you really need to learn to pick up sarcasm.

it's a tad bland... but ok

@RyJones who is you?
me I presume?

That is extortionate. Two nights of that is more than my monthly rent here.

6:25 AM
And in the walk here, I saw every bodily fluid on the ground... shit, vomit, jizz, spit, snot, blood...

@ewwhite yes, you are staying in the second worst part of Seattle.

@ewwhite Did you put it on your Amex black/centurion card?

@Jacob naw, I used my Diner's Club card.
@RyJones hotel situation here is bad
I usually stay at Hotel Max on the edge of downtown.

@ewwhite I agree.

@ewwhite Similar
@ewwhite Did you fly in on Delta private jet?

6:30 AM
@Jacob We drove from Portland

@ewwhite long drive?

3+ hours
and accidents/traffic/stopping to take a dump...
2

Hopefully all of which were unrelated.

traffic was horrible today.

@RyJones Yeah?

6:35 AM
Why are there so many peep shows nearby?!?

@Jacob 520 is closed and there was a fatal accident on 99, which was closed for hours, plus the ball game.

you are in a crappy district?

@ewwhite you are staying in the armpit of a shithole
I don't know what you expect

in a $700/night hotel... I expected slightly fewer jiggling-asses.
but what other area makes sense to stay in?

it's urban flavor. I don't know what else to say. You stay in the Tenderloin in San Francisco, you're going to see people shitting on the sidewalk.

6:39 AM
I can't think of a lot of hotels outside that district

I pointed out a resort in Snoqualmie, but the drive was too far.

it's more my style to use an airbnb though... since I don't have as much money as uncle sam himself.

So start selling vertical produce solutions.

Apparently :(
it seems that developing systems I'm not allowed to talk about doesn't net as much value :P

nobody cares about security. everyone cares about fresh produce.

6:43 AM
as it turns out, some people in the government and some rather large companies in the private sector care deeply about it, but I don't see enough of that to line my pockets with $300000 a year.
it comes to considerably less than that.

which is why, I suspect, people in that industry spin out to one or two man consultancies after a short while of name building

now, historically, my wages have nearly doubled on an annual basis; if I could get just one more year of that I could pay my apartment in calgary off in two years
@RyJones we have had this problem at leviathan, though it is my observation that effort is being made to change this :)

@FalconMomot I wasn't going to name names :)

it's not a secret.

6:58 AM
you know what are delicious? juniper berries.

7:13 AM
so no meet and greet today?
since @ewwhite didn't confirm

I have to be with my wife and such...

I see. Antisocial.
Not sure why you wouldn't give up four or five hours of your limited amount of vacation to go drinking with people you don't know, when you could spend time with your wife

me neither.

7:37 AM
yeah, what's wrong with you @ewwhite?
2

6 hours later…
1:21 PM
@RyJones (marathon sex)

2:20 PM
@ewwhite we'll be here for you long after she's gone

I can hear my neighbor rapping from the basement because of the vent

is he good?

No he's terrible
now they're slamming doors.

2:54 PM
Your password has expired and must be changed
ugh... a site that I access once every 2 months
I should post pics of this location

1 hour later…
4:26 PM
Trying to switch from ubuntu to another distro... After using it for so long I have gotten so used to unity I kinda like it

5:10 PM
@Nick then why switch?

@ewwhite many reasons, I'm installing arch on my laptop to see if xfce is as good as it looks on the screenshots I saw
Im basically looking for a more up-to-date distro

Stockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness. The FBI's Hostage Barricade Database System shows that roughly 8% of victims show evidence of Stockholm syndrome. Stockholm syndrome can be seen as a form of traumatic bonding, which...
Though:
dennis@spirit:~$ lsb_release -ds
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
philosophically, I like fedora more
but rpm...

@DennisKaarsemaker Im trying arch now, if I like it ill switch my main workstation to that

5:27 PM
People should just buy Macs.
3

@ewwhite no...
just no...

Dan
Counting down to my first ever commercial software release!

Cool stuffs. What does it do?

Dan
5:42 PM
@ChrisS Basically, I've finally a keyboard filter with an API which lets me capture Ctrl + Alt + Del and redirect it to a Citrix or RDP session
For Windows thin client use - great for migrating from Linux thin clients (Where Ctrl Alt Del can be captured by design) to Windows clients
Mentioned it in passing to $CurrentClient and they love it

Doesn't mstsc already capture Ctrl + Alt + Del ?? Or is this for use with 3rd party software?

Dan
@ChrisS No, you have to use Ctrl + Alt + End (I think). Don't know of any that do by default
And Citrix defaults to Ctrl + F1, though it's customisable. That alone makes it confusing because it's not even consistent between installations

Huh... Not sure why I thought that was changed in the last few versions of Windows, but you're correct, still the same on Win8.1

@Dan Did you dev the licensing server too :p

Dan
It's kind of hacky, but a massive boost for UX. People get really confused hwen they Ctrl + Alt + Del and get the security screen on the thin client, rather than their session
@Jacob It's just a license file (So the devices bit isn't enforced) but yeah - wrote it for a previous project and just lifted it in

5:48 PM
We use Win8.1 for both the thin client and the VDI desktops, and I don't think anyone does the three finger salute except to change their password. Also, disabled the TFS for login...

Dan
@ChrisS If you lock the session you NEED to Ctrl Alt Del somehow
I tend to advice keeping thin clients off the domain and just allowing an autologin to a "user" account. Then, just use a Web based log in to whatever your backend is

@Dan No TFS at login means no Ctrl Alt Del at lock screen either

Dan
@ChrisS Oh sorry on the session, yeah

Our TCs are domain joined. Once you login it pulls a RDP file for your account and launches the RD Session automatically, kerb auth so no additional login, no explorer shell or anything.

Dan
@ChrisS I hate doing double authentication, plus your pulling GPO's (if applicable) twice
Works fine, and I've done it, but I prefer to keep them bythemselves if possible

5:53 PM
@Dan The VDI desktop is usually still logged in from the previous day

Dan
@ChrisS Haha, fair enough

Also, no double authentication UX.... so they don't care. =]

Dan
Where I can I try and enforce session limits - can't always get away with it
@ChrisS Of course there is - it's pass through, but you're still authenticating at the TC and then the desktop

If a non-administrative (not a secretary or such) person sits at a TC they get a session on the one terminal server - VDI is only for the admin staff. It autokicks them after two hours of inactivity. But people don't use it too much, they they can wait.
Wow I can't type at all today

Dan
It is Sunday after all

5:57 PM
I'm also doing a bunch of command line stuff in another window, switching between English and CLI Syntax seems to get me for some reason
Might not have enough caffeine too

Dan
I spent most of the night on the toilet, which was fun
Despite suffering with IBS it's the first time I've been properly "ill" in years and years.

You caught Ebola?
