A: Getting "The target account name is incorrect" when accessing a share on the desktop

purpleSHEEPI just had this same problem. It was in fact that the time on the server was a couple hours out. Once I reset this all was fine again.

What's wrong with this answer?
@MichaelHampton the answer which is "check the time on the server and fix if off"? nothing
@RyJones Yeah, exactly, that's what I thought. I'm trying to figure out why someone downvoted it.
@MichaelHampton because they're an idiot
@RyJones Well, yes, not keeping time in sync is kind of silly, but still...
@MichaelHampton no. The person who downvoted the clock answer is an idiot
00:17
@RyJones Aha!
OK, there are idiots with at least 125 rep on SF. What do do about it?
@MichaelHampton Ban everyone with < 125 rep from the site
@MichaelHampton breed faster than they do
In fact, ban everyone except 10kers and moderators
@MarkHenderson well I'm out
@RyJones To make it more fair, then we should just ban everyone except moderators
Maybe before participating we could present the user with a really simple IT question. If they don't know the answer, they can skip it, but if they skip 3 of them, then it says "I don't think you're really an IT professional, get fucked" and then direct them to Yahoo Answers or reddit or something
Something like "If I SSH into my server and see an `ilo>` prompt, what is the correct thing to do?"
"1. Clearly your OS has been infected with malware. Send the server back to HP"
"2. Check yourself before you wreck yourself"
"3. Randomly mash the keyboard"
"4. Ask on Server Fault without doing any research"
00:22
@MarkHenderson Clearly the answer is 4.
@MichaelHampton And then ignore everyone who tells you to eat a dick
@RyJones What huh?
"A user tells you that they accidentally deleted their only copy of their wedding photos which were on their network drive to free up some space for the latest episode of The Walking Dead. As a systems administrator, your response should be:"
"1. Locate the correct backup tape, and run a recovery on their files from the most recent backup"
"2. Delete all their files"
"3. Report them to HR for inappropriate use of company resources and get them fired"
2 and/or 3 is the correct answer
@Chopper3 Added me on FB and I was like "who is this guy I've heard of his name somewhere before..."
@Jacob And then he swore at you and wished harm to your most beloved family member and then it all clicked
00:25
@MarkHenderson But when the user who tells you that is the CEO...
@MichaelHampton Then you tell him that nobody approved your budget for better equipment and the only backups you have are 9 months old
@MarkHenderson BUT my CEO is a nice guy.
@Jacob So is mine
And I know for a fact he keeps all his kids photos on our office server
Thankfully he also approves pretty much any money I ask for that includes "redundancy" or "backups" or "DR" in the reason why I want it
So, I figured out (finally) and confirmed with the TWC tech that came by today that it's indeed not my hardware causing my internet troubles...
Apparently the node's over-provisioned since there's a lot of customers in the area with the Ultimate package, so there's not enough bandwidth...they're doing upgrades next month to correct the problem.
00:41
@NathanC Contention!
Oh, I'm glad none of my neighbors are network hogs...like me
Heh, yeah. We have a bunch of communities on the same node (for example, my community has a good 100 buildings alone), so...
@MichaelHampton I suspect I'm in the same boat. I have coax to the node, and they run fibre from there. Most of my neighbours are older and their kids have moved out. Not many families with bandwidth hogging kids.

1 hour later…
02:17
So after not going to thedailywtf for about a year I checked it out again today. Anndd it validated my decision to stop reading.
Always sad when something that used to be entertaining and fun becomes boring and repetitive
So this is my current situation:

I was meant to have an important site induction on Friday, with 4 other people from other companies.
One of our clients asked me to come to their office, in another city, on that Friday.
So I re-organise the inductions with everyone to be on Thursday instead (and they have rescheduled things around this).
4 hours after rescheduling everything, the client now tells me that they want me there on Thursday and *maybe* Friday
I should tell them to go fuck themselves, right?
Pretty much
I know what my boss is going to say
He's going to tell me to reschedule everyone else again
Which will make me look like an idiot
Tell the boss he is perfectly welcome to hire you a secretary!
@MichaelHampton Fuck I feel like his secretary a lot of the time
Mainly because he's disorganised and never puts anything in his Outlook calendar
I booked him a meeting for a day cos his calendar was free and he goes "oh no! I'm in Perth that whole day!" "But.. you've got an 8pm appointment at Carlingford!" "Yeah, I'm flying back in at 7pm" (Perth is like a 5 hour flight)
Yeah, you both need a secretary or two
02:29
So he' flying to Perth that morning, taking advantage of the -3hrs timezone difference, flying back in at 7pm and none of it is in his calendar except his 8pm Soccer training
Oh and this is on this Wednesday so chances are I would have jsut come into the office, he wouldn't be here and he'd be uncontactabel cos he's in the air
@MichaelHampton We did talk about getting an office secretary to just answer calls and book things and shit like that but we decided that the money could be better spent on hiring a training and documentation manager
Which we did and she is awesome so no real complaints

Q: Windows 10 running games slowly

Ahkam NihardeenIssue: All my games running on Windows 10 are running slowly When I tried Unturned on my Windows 7, I get around 50~60 FPS But when I played the game on Windows 10 Insider Program, I get much lower FPS Unturned running on Windows 10. Notice the FPS on the Top-Right is only 8FPS At first, ...

Fucking idiot
Wow my games don't run well on an Alpha operating system!
$5 says he downloaded the checked build
@MichaelHampton "But that means that they checked it before they uploaded it, right? Cos the other one was the Free build and I don't want that"
Bob
Bob
I want to test games to see if APIs such are DirectX work properly on the new release. That is why I am testing on the Developer Preview, which can be useful when developing my own game @MBraedley — Ahkam Nihardeen 27 mins ago
Test if they work properly? This is the stage they try to make them work properly...
Huh. Decent chance of getting first-party SSH support (client at least) in Win10.

If even half those suggestions ("on the backlog") are implemented... I might actually go through the trouble of upgrading my Win7 desktop :P
I think for now I'm going to stick with managing Linux boxes with a Linux desktop.
03:17
@MarkHenderson I'm a secretary all the time, but it doesn't really bother me
Just part of the job
@Jacob only if you let it be
gotta draw the line somewhere
@RyJones I don't get to draw that line, and it's all usually IT related
christ now I have that stupid song stuck in my head
@RyJones I'm so sorry
I'm all about that bass.
2
03:25
@RyJones I'm not
Unfortunately treble is a critical component to quality music
Yep, it's all about that bass.
@BigHomie DTW was an interesting experience at 5am
@BigHomie That was pulled from WU
@Jacob Oh, so was the rest of Detroit at that hour I'm sure
03:37
@BigHomie I stayed within DTW, I saw too much sketchy while landing to even consider leaving
at 5am? You did right dude.
What were you doin in my neck of the glove anyway?
@BigHomie SEA -> ORF

gotcha
4 hours? You shoulda hit a Coney Island man, tagged me on Comms I woulda gave you directions
@BigHomie at 5am?
a toddler and an infant, sleeping til 7 is a rare luxury in this house, on any given day of the week.
03:40
@BigHomie I always take the redeye to DTW.
I'll give you a heads up next time
cool
@BigHomie Is there anything outside of the "secure" zone in the airport in the way of food?
You mean inside the airport? Not sure, don't travel that much, last time I was there was about 4 years or so ago, wasn't much, I just stopped at starbucks and the old ladys almost caused us to miss our flight
@Bob 10/10 would request
@RyJones Thats not what I expected from a song called 'all about that bass'
@BigHomie I've been reading mad twitter rants about that since Thursday night
Prolific did the same thing a few years ago and didn't cop nearly as much flack as FTDI did
Bob
Bob
@BigHomie Bit late for that.
03:53
What's your WSUS policy for domain controllers?
I suffered greatly from the Prolific one, but I had no idea that my chips were counterfiet
Bob
Bob
It was only exposed recently, but IIRC people were having issues up to a month ago.
I still haven't heard which specific update does this.
Also, it wasn't a Windows Update fault
It was FTDI deliberately bricking them
@Bob Story of my life since I don't do IT anymore, was actually looking up HOA evils when I came across it.
@Bob Things take a long time to get pushed to Windows Update
Bob
Bob
03:55
@MarkHenderson Yea, I mean the update came out a while ago.
@Bob It was an optional driver update for USB Serial Adapters, so in reality it doesn't even have to be a WSUS thing when somebody plugs one in.
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson That's the problem with this kind of heavy-handed approach.
@BigHomie Ah. So I might not have it installed in the first place.
Though now I wonder if my emergency stash of router-debricking serial adapters will still work.
@Bob yep, likely those $5 ones we get from places on the net
You know driver updates are always optional when it comes to WU, but when you plug in a device and it goes 'Searching Windows Update for drivers' Danger Danger

Good morning.
@cole No.. the only good Monday morning is one when I'm not working.

Doh.
@ewwhite You shouldn't do that.
I got carried away

Me too, I feel for you.
12:56

@cole hola.
que pasa?
@cole No mucho. Have an interview scheduled tomorrow so I've got that to look forward to. Any changes in your work-world?
@jscott interview for you for a new job, or you're interviewing someone?
I had a really good phone screen on Friday.
@ewwhite It's not difficult to break WSUS. It likes breaking on its own, too.
13:01
@cole New job. Glad to hear you got a call lined up. Last I knew you weren't very happy at work.
@NathanC I clicked some bad things...
and 100GB later...
@jscott still not, but stopped working more than I absolutely had to.
Good for you. Take care of you first. :)
morning
WSUS. Or, "you want to download HOW MUCH?!"
13:05
@tombull89 The auto-approve UX is terrible
You forgot to check the box.
Checking the box caused me much pain.
@jscott seems like a really cool opportunity (until I get to Seattle) - it'll give me some hands-on with the tech that I need to get a (better) job in Seattle.
because there was a lot of Vista in this environment that I didn't know about.
Who uses Windows Vista?
13:08
@cole You're moving West? Cool. Seems there's a few (and growing) SF'ers in that area.
@jscott I'd be split between both internal IT and some external SaaS stuff.
@ewwhite I'd be more worried about the XP clients. Vista still gets updates.
@jscott indeed I am, need to get some more skillz before I do so I don't end up with a shit job/not being able to find one since I've been working with antiquated hardware/software.
@cole You being on here is probably enough. You'd be shocked at how antiquated a lot of shops and their IT staff are.
@cole I wouldn't sweat the whole "worked with NT in 2014" thing. You're adaptable, you can show the migration projects you lead as an example.
13:09
@jscott gulp
@jscott funny you bring that up. The interviewer asked which versions of Windows I've used. I said "NT4 up to 2012 R2"
He paused and said "...you haven't been in IT that..long - is that something you played with on your...own?" I replied "Sadly, no - when I started with my current employer they had 15 NT4 domains, I'm down to 1 now."
@cole Nailed it.
just burn the computers. no reason to still have that shit around
@jscott he was impressed.
@cole I'd have offered you a scotch at that point :)
13:12
@cole Heh. I haven't heard much about NT4 until you were saying you were migrating things from it
I've had two technical screens in the past 2 weeks - and I did exceptionally well on both.
Definitely the boost I needed.
Huge Zip Server Log Files -> Chunking into little pieces -> Map Reduce -> Sort -> Analysis -> Money -> Bread -> Happy. — Achmed Durangi 30 secs ago
Who wants to devop that?
How the fuck did that get an upvote?
does that mean huge zip files = happy? DOES NOT COMPUTE
Because people are dumb.
13:21
So what do you guys auto-approve in WSUS?
Why the downvotes? — Achmed Durangi 24 secs ago
@ewwhite Usually security updates immediately
@NathanC but that'll bust my ass... lots of downloads
Normal updates get a 3 day hold in case MS withdraws them...servers are on 7-day hold.
@ewwhite Yeah, I'd imagine Update Tuesday would cripple the poor WSUS server.
@NathanC is the hold policy in WSUS?
What does the GPO and installation day look like?
@ewwhite Yeah, it's the "deadline" date. The machines aren't set to auto-install as soon as they're available.
So when the deadline hits, Windows installs them at that point
13:23
ah...
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Force install all updates at 09:45am, along with a force reboot
this probably seems basic to anyone who's worked in a real company
At any point between then, users can select to install them sooner. :P
why 9:45am?
@Dan trolololol
13:24
(actually, that's the quiet period in produce)
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Well, screw you and the horse you rode in on
some are asking for 11am
so the deadline date is set in WSUS and not the GPO?
and do you guys just have large WSUS repositories?
Fucking F5... they fixed a memory leak in the second-to-last hotfix. And they fixed shellshock in the last one, but undid the fix for the memory leak.
@DennisKaarsemaker doh.
:(
13:32
So I'm starting next week on project "Go nuts with the certifications". I've downloaded the DoD 8570 track and will be self-studying everything and trying to knock out the following: CISSP, CISA, CAP, SSCP -- my goal is to be completely done with all of these by the spring of next year. Why? Because I needed something interesting to blog about.
@ewwhite Yes, deadlines are a WSUS thing. The GPOs control Windows Update scheduling, with or without WSUS. And yes we have large WSUS repos. But I only have 7/2003 (quiet haters)/2008R2/2012R2 for OSes. SQL updates are a disk hog too.
hello there, dear sysadmins
hey @dawud
@TheCleaner nice!
I feel like I should get some up-to-date certs.
I know some people think they're a waste of time...but for me I look at it as a way to branch out into topics that I don't encounter on a daily basis. I won't walk around afterwards with an Outlook signature 50 acronyms long....just like the learning process and the feeling of accomplishment at the end.
13:42
@TheCleaner no I agree - and sometimes will get you through HR screening, too.
@ChrisS 8% increase in one day?
@TheCleaner I'm working on my MCSA
Yep. Apparently ~80 of the top 1000 websites were prepared to disable SSLv3 at the drop of a hat, but hadn't already because ... reasons.
@ewwhite My WSUS repo is ~350 GB
@ewwhite I just checked the WSUS download dir here, it's ~185GB. That's separate from SCCM's content and the SUSDB.
@TheCleaner Mr. The Cleaner, MCISE, MVP, CCNA, CCNP, LOL, OMG, WTFBBQ
13:44
@ChrisS Interesting.
I try to keep WSUS <100GB if possible
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 Probably told this one before, but had a customer at RM who would sign off with "CCNA [Hax0r Username Here]"
I have all SQL server updates, system center, and a majority of Windows updates...
Dan
Dan
Someone was bored enough to Google his alias one day and he was posting a bunch of license RM software along with "hacks" and the like
As we speak I'm unchecking "Windows XP"
13:45
Run WSUS on a 2012 (or newer) server and use NTFS dedup
@ChrisS that's surprising. We're definititely not yet seitching off sslv3. Too many customers on xp with ie6 :(
Hmm...that might give me a use for this 2012 license I have kicking around
Running the cleanup tool too
I mean, we're not hurting for space so I haven't slimmed it down much.
Also, anybody on Android with an AOL e-mail account is in for fun. Android has default settings to make it easy to setup your AOL account, configured for SSL and not TLS. AOL disabled SSL last week or somewhere in there. So now all those people have to go through and switch to modern settings (IMAP: TLS, SMTP TLS & Port 587).
Dan
Dan
Ouch
@tombull89 :) we messed with a guy once at work that had gotten his A+ and N+ on the Helpdesk and was bragging about it and stuck the certification logos in his Outlook signature. He was a good kid, but we hazed him by changing his signature to have 20 different made up certification logos via GIMP.
13:48
@ChrisS so many parents calling their kids "my dang email isn't working on this stupid phone!"
Yep... Or son-in-law, as the case might be
@ChrisS how do you trim?
@NathanC whoa....mine is 2GB. Why is yours so big? Genetics?
@NathanC I don't see much sense in wasting disk space either, seeing how much WSUS actually can be deduped down to..
user image
2
@ewwhite Keep the list of Products as short as possible, decline superseded updates, run the Cleanup thing on a regular basis.
13:50
@pauska oooh, dedupe?
@pauska Whoa. Helluva savings!
@TheCleaner 2GB? WSUS ain't working if it's only 2GB.
that's regular NTFS dedup on a WSUS store
Googles "Enable Dedupe on W2012"
2
Wow - that dedupe
13:51
@ewwhite me too
That's insane!
@pauska What are the downsides to Windows 2012 Dedupe?
@ewwhite it could bite you in the ass when you need to restore, if you don't have NTFS dedup-aware backups
but who would restore a WSUS folder?.. just keep in mind that it's per-volume
I wouldn't be backing up the WSUS store... Excluding it from Veeam
and it's VMware snapshots are disabled
then go ahead
Getting 53% dedupe rate on my one 2012 R2 file server.
13:54
Import-Module ServerManager
Add-WindowsFeature -name FS-Data-Deduplication
Import-Module Deduplication
that's it?
I only use scheduled optimizations during the night, I don't want it to rape I/O during work hours
@ewwhite and enable it on a volume
and set up schedule(s)
@ChrisS It is when it isn't being used for the actual downloading only controlling:
@TheCleaner Ah. I suppose if you don't have many machines downloading updates that's probably a better choice.
distributed machines/locations....the connection back to the WSUS server is much worse than their fast internet connections at each branch
13:56
@TheCleaner One of my clients has "*.microsoft.com" blacklisted in their Barracuda Web Filter because of their non-domain-joined PCs causing download storms.
@TheCleaner are you going to blog or anything for those certs?
@cole Yeah, I'll keep a blog for it to show what I used to study with, comments/thoughts/frustrations, etc.
@ewwhite Sounds like a smart solution.
@TheCleaner Interested in seeing your progress - may be the motivation I need!
@ewwhite :) seems harsh to block the entire domain.
13:57
apple.com is blocked, too...
because: iPhone iOS updates...
too bad they missed akamai.net...
@ewwhite what a great idea.. tell them to blacklist akamai
haha
or no.. wait for them to do it, and then you can fly in and rescue the day
@cole sure, I'll post the blog URL here. I have one already but the last time I updated it was in 2013 on a wordpress site.
@TheCleaner nice :)
14:01
@pauska What's your Deduplication "older than" setting?
@ewwhite the default
any other file extension exclusions?
nope, all at default
I've been up since 4:30AM.
@cole mailto:[email protected] attatchment:coffee.cup
oh, wait, can't do physical stuff...
14:04
@pauska also, do you do this on file servers?
@ewwhite I do.. but we have MS DPM for backups, who can restore with dedup intact
if you're doing veeam backups then it's snapshots anyways, so I would enable it
I use Veeam, so it's image-based.
@tombull89 3D printer for printing a coffee mug and coffee maker! :o
@tombull89 choo choo, bitches.
2
but I'm actually wide awake. Shot up out of bed right at 4:30 and started cleaning the kitchen.

there's a CCNA for Nexus etc.. maybe you should force him to take that
