12:00 AM
@JimB: Right now Apple is doing exactly what they say. Personal digital devices.
Digital living room.
I come home, hook up my MacBook Pro to my network.

I think that by default it prefers the wireless but I'm not sure that it turns the cell connection off, I know that win7 and android devices will try both

Open iTunes, turn on my TV and AppleTV, and stream iTunes content to my TV.
Take out my iPhone and use it as a remote control.

How would it try both, have they done something really weird with the IP stack?

sure but I think they also want to be able to take that device to work

That's what Apple has always said they're aiming for. The digital lifestyle.

12:03 AM
@zoredache, no idea but my main phone is winmo 7 and I can stream shows via wifi and as I leave the house it seamlessly moves to cell

They are penetrating the corporate market now without even trying.

android is the same

Because bosses are going in with their iPhones and demanding that they be made to work. :-)

@JimB, yeah, but that is easy. When the WIFI is not available the interface goes down and the next route is chosen...
I thought you where saying that while both where connected there was a way to direct a specific request over a specific interface.

they are getting in but I am seeing more and more folks that have iphone/ipads realize that getting it to work opened up a security can o worms and start thinking hard about it

12:04 AM
That would be impossible without some hiccup in the connection since it has to re-route or constantly have the cell data pouring in.
As long as the network is designed properly and the resources are properly managed, I don't see the security hazard.
But that's for our situation.

@bart - I dunno my experience shows 0 hiccups which why it it must use both and when I get back to wireless, it seems that local data is available again so it has to be using both

If you can tell me how it would do it without utilizing your cellular data plan at all times, I'd be interesting in knowing how!

at some point I'll get a cell sniffer and see exactly what's going on but not anytime son

Seeing as I've had connection issues with using satellite and had to deal with routing glitches because of how it was done...
Cell sniffer...you could just watch your data usage after streaming video.
Check with your cell provider for your data usage over a period of time.

I think it must use the cell all the time, my data usage has always been high, I might borrow the wifes phone for a bit though and see

12:08 AM
holy crap ...like 300 messages since i last was here

Experiment. With your Android or Win7 system, connect to a service with a TCP stream...like ssh...and wander outside your wifi connection.

yeah I'll experiment at some point
pesky kids want food, brb

Pesky me wants food too.

@BartSilverstrim i have no issues sshing in from my andriod
even when on cell
and not wifi

Personally, I would like to see access opened so people can bring untrusted devices in to work on within our network and we protect our resources, while the untrusted devices can access Google Docs, GMail, etc. We provide access and infrastructure. Resources to print things. Stuff like that. It would save money, it lets users be happy using their own devices, and we filter things at the border, protect the servers at the switch level and focus on keeping them updated and AV-protected.
@Zypher: he's saying he can move seamlessly from wireless to cell.
I was saying it's not possible because of rerouting.
Unless it's constantly using both.
So hop on wifi, ssh into a system, then keep the connection while moving out of wifi range and hopping on cell.
It should drop the connection.
I would imagine you should have some degree of re-buffering if you were watching a long youtube video and doing the same thing unless you have a really big buffer while it's switching over networks.

12:20 AM
ahhhh gotcha
i know my phone has some sort of rediculous buffer
it threw off the speedtest app
to the point it was saying i could get like 25mbps up
gah minicom hates me

Did you watch the video I posted from Corning?

nah, didn't see it
link?

Some of it optimistic, but we'll probably see some of the watered down technology in the semi-near future like this.
Part of where I would see an Apple future for iThings.
Not surprising given that I think Corning Gorilla Glass is used with some iDevices.

I wish I had time to make an omelet in the morning.

@BartSilverstrim, moving seamlessly from wireless to Cell works for some applications because they aren't a constant stream. Netflix is getting bits of the media in chunks. Possibly using the RANGE request method of HTTP.

12:26 AM
jesus ... i want

Neat, huh?
But then again, it could be like the Sun Starfire video.
Just a lot of wishful photoshopping.
I swear that phone could be an iPhone 6 or 7, though.
I just got a little more misty-eyed since I'm less than an hour from Corning Glass.
I enjoy going through the museum.
And during Winter they hold Winter Sparkle where they shut down the street in Corning and have a kind of Xmas festival.
The offices have their shades open and they spell out words in the corporate office by turning on certain offices, so they spell things like NOEL out.
:-)

haha nice

Oh well. Hey, @Jacob's here. You can tell him about the guy trying to take his "youngest" title away.
I'm going to head to the kitchen and try finding some food. Night, everyone.

@BartSilverstrim WAS IST DAS?

you might not be the youngest anymore, whippersnapper.
Laters!

12:32 AM
what?

Does anyone have a degree in CS?

@Zypher finished the presentation?

nah

@Zypher HA
the conference is next saturday

oh i know
if it's done early it wasn't done right

12:38 AM
@Zypher I'm guessing it'll be done friday about 11PM?

nah i think kyle and i are heading down thurs night so by then

@Zypher I'll be there on thursday

7 hours later…
7:59 AM
G'day

8:30 AM
Morning

2 hours later…
10:33 AM
hi

lovely day here - just got back from a quick 30 miler on the bike before the roads get too busy :)

10:56 AM
staying firmly indoors for 4 days to avoid the tourists

It's warm today.
I considered walking into the office
but it's too warm for that.

2 hours later…
12:27 PM
@Zypher, saw an image post of yours last night. The epic boobs one. Bravo, good sir.

Sorry for the cloud pun in the headline, I just couldn’t help myself. If you’re a somewhat active user of the internet, you’ve probably noticed that Amazon’s cloud service started having some problems yesterday. I thought about writing this blog entry then, but I held off. There are blips in every service, and I figured [...]

1:16 PM
Anyone here had a serious play with free space optics?
...serious play? WTF am I think?
Anyone here seriously used FSO, or played with it?

2:12 PM
@DanBig yea all of yesterday was kinda epic

yawn stretch meow

So AWS is still shitting the bed, good times for their customers.

2:28 PM
HAHAHA
fuck you cloud
err sorry
i feel really bad for those that rely on AWS (except quora)

Bloody hot out, still my new iPad has arrived

@RobertMoir Jealousy. I has it.

Heh

which one didjya get?

32gb wifi
Oh & black bezel, I thought the White distracted from the screen

2:34 PM
I have a 16GB white wifi shipping next week probably

Nice

I think I'll wait on uploading my music to Amazon clouddrive

not sure I'll like the white - it seemed nice in the store

Hoo boy, anyone else glad they don't work for amazon just now

if I wasnt having it engraved I'd be able to just buy one from one of the mall stores around here -- we have like the best-stocked least-visited stores in the world.

2:36 PM
It is nice, I had some trouble deciding what to get

The provider I used to work for had a UPS explode and both generators catch fire and fail. We were fully back on line 16 hours later and it was hell.
I do not envy the Amazon team right now.

Lucky, they're rare as he'll here

Definition of geek rage: Boob pictures stored in AWS today.

@GregD MY NET MEMES!

Humph. You can't star lines in chat on an ipad

2:37 PM
Well at least AWS and boob pictures have something in common...NSFW
4

I may steal that line for a blog post if that's ok greg

@RobertMoir Knock yourself out.

:-)

@RobertMoir yeah and the comment vote buttons don't work either...

Doh

3:09 PM
Gotta Get Down on FRIDAY

@Zypher Amazon started the party early.

oh good, i was worried: thinq.co.uk/2011/4/22/…

The machines could be forcing them to make that statement.

3:26 PM
nah, they just kill... of course it could be a T-6000 and have morphed into the spokes person

2 hours later…
4:59 PM
Wow, the contractor really screwed us at one of my sites. The Exchange migration was totally fubar.... Now I'm going to have to try to fix it. Joy.

@Holocryptic sorry man

@Holocryptic screw him
Using a rack mounting rail or something
Those things are sharp

Eww, that sucks @Holocryptic
Totally fubar, or just a bit?

Yeah, what exactly happened?

OAB not updating, public folders kinda funky. Old server still listed as generating server for the offline stuff. But the older server is dead and gone, sooooo, yeah.
certificate errors

5:06 PM
was it a version migration?

2000-2007

2000?!!!!

2007?!!!

@#$£&

Oh, yeah. When I came on end of 2009, they still had a 2000 forest

5:07 PM
@DanBig yeah.. that too :P
Eek

Yeah, I know... not my call

OAB stuff should be a quick one to fix though

Things mostly work.
but there's all this little stuff. And I keep seeming to find more
@BenPilbrow You would think...

Well, moving from 2K to 2K7 is big, especially with the cert stuff, autodiscover, etc

I hate it when things mostly work. Often you find things that are working that by rights just shouldn't be!

5:08 PM
@DanBig I think that's where one of the hangups is.

did you use a UC cert?

I don't think so
Which is probably why its broken

you will get all kinds of funky errors, even stuff that seems unrelated, like setting an out of office in outlook
internal and external URLs and URIs
blah, should be a fun weekend

Heh. Eff it. Its made it this far, I'm not gonna burn my weekend over it. But I'm going to push strongly for correct certs to begin with, then I'll pick at the other stuff.

My recommendation, certificatesforexchange.com
sick prices, and incredibly easy to get the cert issued and installed, i use them myself
its a godaddy subsidy

5:12 PM
Yeah, I think I saw you post an answer on that at some point

Where else can you get a 10 domain UC cert for ~$100/yr

Wow. That is pretty sick

They are signed by starfield, which is a good size CA

I need to start a CA company. What a racket.

Q: What is the best website to post a job for a Windows sysadmin?

Jorge GuzmanThere are a TON of sites out there to submit jobs and it could become quite expensive to submit to all of them. Any ideas on which are the most effective ones when trying to recruit Windows / MSSQL sysadmins / system engineers? Thanks in advance.

Go vote me, let me get rep cap on that silly answer.
:D

5:17 PM
WTH is up with some people. I had an accept yesterday, they changed it to another answer this morning and now they've just changed it back to mine.
The mind boggles...
I still can't believe mine is the only close vote on that

Don't you dare try to take away my rep @BenPilbrow!

@DanBig don't panic.. closed questions don't lose any rep for answers
Migrated ones might, but not standard close ones

I'm only messing with you.
It's Frieeeday, i'm a little antsy to cut outta here today.

I. Cant. Wait. to go home
Get my Assissin's Creed on

Which one?

5:21 PM
Brotherhood
such a sweet game. Went and picked it up earlier this week. It's helped me keep my sanity

Loved it. I beat it when it first came out, then let my friend borrow it. I need to get it back and hit up the DLC

I'm kind of cheating, as I leave the game running while I'm at work to rack up Gold and then collect it when I get home. And do the same when I go to bed.

Eh, honestly, its not worth it, IMHO

How's that?

I made more than enough $ just during play, i never really found the need for more

5:27 PM
Ah. I like to have cushion. 50k a pop is pretty nice.

What are you playing it on?

360

I played on PS3

I actually just bought a new Elite. I was still running on G1 that was 5 years old and I was running out of HDD space. So I went and grabbed an elite with the Kinect
Haven't hooked up the Kinect yet, maybe this weekend

I have a halo edition, but thats not allowed on Live anymore.
Modded for homebrew, got hit during a ban wave

5:30 PM
Yeah, I was thinking about modding the old one for kicks and giggles

I actually bought a second console for netflix and several of the games I still play on live
I'm back into Borderlands, i forgot how awesome it was.

Never played that. I'll have to check it out

Duuuuude. Go buy it, its like $10 used and worth every penny

Looks a little like Fallout 3

It's really nothing at all like F3
Gotta get back to some things here, later holo

5:37 PM
cya

please... make the paperwork stop...
I'm begging

More begging!!

sits up and whines

brings out the whip

@voretaq7 you will have to fill out forms PW-007a-3 and PW-x-34-a with your HM-66z and HM-37-FG

5:40 PM
Dogs don't know it's not bacon (but if you try to pull that fake bacon shit on a sysadmin you're gonna get shoved into a 1U space in a very hot rack!)

Yeah, did you get the memo about those TPS report cover sheets?

@DanBig, I'll give you +1 for quoting Mr. Tiger Blood

@Zypher Don't you quote regulations to me - I co-chaired the committee to revise the color of the cover of the book that regulation is in! We kept it gray.

(alternate response: "That's it. I'm burning the building down."

So drab. I like it.

@Holocryptic I want a copy of the meeting minutes for the committee(s) at IBM that decided to stripe the logo. I bet those were some heated arguments right there.

5:44 PM
Heh, as far as I'm concerned, IBM can take their damn Lenovos and go piss up a rope. Do Not Like.

@voretaq7 And never underestimate the amazing droning ability of talking heads. If you're not careful, you'll lose your soul.

@Holocryptic Soul? Wazzat?

Wow. 8 pages no less. Fantasmic.

one per logo - annoying :-/

5:47 PM
@voretaq7 A soul is that...thing... I can't really describe it, as I gave mine up in exchange for some rock candy when I was 3
2

so a soul is like delicious candy?

Yes. I've actually taken to eating souls on the weekend to fill the empty feeling inside.
"to suggest "speed and dynamism."" Way to go IBM talking heads. Way to go.

Speed holes. they make the server go faster.
2

It goes faster when you add racing stripes!!
2

there's something wrong with the star wall.
Boobs.
2

5:50 PM
Fixed

that's better.

Ugh. I should probably...work... or something. Check back later sometime.

double-crested long-tailed narrow-billed blue-footed.... :)
2

6:05 PM
boobies?
3

@hobodave how's the knee ?

@Iain It's better, still not 100% though. I went easy on it yesterday, did overhead kettlebell swings, GHD situps and sandbag cleans
today I'm going to do Fran

Fran ?

CrossFit has a bunch of "hero" workouts that serve as a benchmark of your fitness
Fran is 21-15-9 reps of thrusters and pullups
it's punishing
they make it look easy, 2:37 is an amazing time
I'll be happy if I break 10 mins

I'll stick with 30 miles on the bike this morning @16.5mph average and an hour horse riding this afternoon

6:46 PM
hi

7:02 PM
@hobodave looks easy

@Greg :P

I wouldn't manage 1 rep of that

7:33 PM
@Holocryptic IBM Does not make Lenovos. Lenovo does. IBM just didn't want to deal with commodity PCs/Laptops anymore so they sold off the Think* brand

Didn
Didn't think I'd show up in the middle of a Crossfit convo in here :-)

@Hyppy Probably have a good point

7:48 PM
@Geordan, don't know what you expected but the last things you should expect are technical and sensible

@Holocryptic I've never liked the ThinkCrap anyway, so I suppose the blame can be shared in either circumstance ;-)

@Iain heh good point. Maybe more talk of end-of-week beer

@Hyppy I prefer the term "ThunkPad" myself...
2

@Geordan well, I have an empty bottle of Wychcraft and a (mostly) full bottle of Oxford Gold next to it on the table next to me

EC2 seems like it's dying again

8:00 PM
@Hyppy The VA center has be degraded for awhile

@Hyppy It's not dying. The Pope is Fine.

@Jacob Yeah, they were having issues earlier as well, but things were looking up for about 20 hours or so. Guess it's still having problems in VA.

whistles So, just 9 votes to 4500

meh - I'm only 25 off 10k

8:19 PM
I just PR'd my Fran
8:34

nice jog
*job

@Geordan pressing the upkey will allow you to edit

Hey @Jacob - somone else may have your title

@Iain I've heard

@Jacob Thank you! I should probably review the docs for the chat blush

8:32 PM
What docs? We're sysadmins, not english majors.

@Iain Bah, reading is for the Help Desk. It's much better to just click things that look right until it starts working, then declare it off-limits until the end of time.

From what I hear helpdesks just escalate or close - reading is reserved for reddit

@Geordan ... I stand humbly corrected.

9:06 PM
@Iain So who might be taking my title?

fahadsadah, London, United Kingdom
1k 3 15

@Iain hmmm

2 hours later…
11:10 PM
I still get to keep my title as 2nd youngest though.

@CodyHarlow He's 15, Its a toss up. I'm not sure
@CodyHarlow no not really, one of us would move to Number 2 :P

hmm...well then it'd be you.
Fine, I'll be 3rd.

@CodyHarlow :P
