Can someone tell me what tools I need to remotely manage Exchange 2007 from a Windows 7 PC? something similar to the remote administration tools used to manage active directory.
If these tools exist, can a link be provided as well?
Scenario: Client Windows 7 Pro on a W2k3 Domain. User resolves a machine's name. Tries \\name\share and gets permission denied. Tries \\IP\share and is allowed access.
@JohntheSeagull No offence but you should post on the main site. As you can see, there's a grand total of 8 people here - quite literally thousands see the main site, and you'd get much more exposure there
I can only give you a quick pointer as I'm working at the mo', but check your DNS is alright. Do nslookup servername and then do tracert servername - I'll bet DNS thinks it's got a different IP than it really does
@GregD At my last place we did it by proxying exchange through sendmail. But we did that mainly because we didn't want to expose old (hackable) versions of exchange to the internet - Being able to append crap to messages was a bonus ;)
Basically, i was thinking it would be nice to generate a sig server side, and pull attributes, such as name, number and title, then pop some text and hyperlinks (disclaimer) at the bottom.

Mainly the reason, is some people use multiple devices, laptop, OWA, desktop and mobile device, would be nice to have a standard sig generated server side, so each device is identical. I know 3rd party products exist, just trying to avoid those on the first go-around
@DanBig You can add text link Voretaq mentioned, but not a crypto sig or anything complicated. It's also the same for everyone.. It's been a while so I don't remember the details.. IIRC there are 3rd party products that can do a lot more.
I wrote a script that generates signatures for Outlook from AD info... But it doesn't do OWA, phones, or any number of other systems that might interface with e-mail.

@Holocryptic That reminds me... We're starting to deploy MS FEP; it's the Security Essentials program with a different title and policy to manage settings.... Talk about minimal effort to change the product.
I am running CentOS and have yum-updatesd running everyday and notifying me of any updates. A few days ago, yum started telling me that there are 131 updates available. What would cause it to do this? Was the CentOS repo just updated?
@ChrisS the machinations of me implementing a truly one server solution was mind boggling. WSUS, FF and MOM 2005 on one VM. Plus SQL 2005 STD and all the reporting.
I've got WSUS, FF, SCCM, and an App-V Steaming/Management server all on the same VM. They're usually not too bad, but SQL and Reporting is on another dedicated SQL VM.
@Zypher Content owners are digital idiots and put a zillion restrictions in the contracts limiting what Netflix exposes to customer.... I think the player isn't allowed to have anything but play/pause/ff/rewind or something like that.

@Zypher I've said that for a long time... I'll pay $30 for the first stream and $10/mo for each additional. But I want MKV/h264/AAC at a reasonable quality, and almost every movie or TV show available on DVD or already broadcast (TV). Feel free to embed my e-mail (or ID) in the steam so if I pirate it you can cut me off too....
I stopped trying to pirate any music when I could get it at reasonable prices/terms via iTunes and Amazon... and I recommend to everyone I know that they do the same (most have followed). Movies and TV shows haven't followed suit yet.

Here's a question I've been pondering. If you guys use free/open source backends, what do you use for client side? Do you have a separate windows domain to handle that stuff?
@Holocryptic In my previous life as a developer we wrote custom middleware that auth'd against AD and interacted with open-source/non-domain-aware backends
And then that gets me thinking about productivity software. .doc(x) is pretty standard, so do other users have to use Office for Mac and other stuff to get by?
I know if you've never used the Ribbon before, it's daunting and had a moderate learning curve; but after you get used to it you'll be at least as fast as before, and most people I know are notably quicker.
@voretaq7 5 Years! Seems like a long time... My laptop is ~2.5 and I'm ready to trade up, though it will go to someone else for a year or two. Certain upgrades extend the useful life; but I think my limit is ~4 years.
@ChrisS It's a long cycle - we amortize them out over 3 years, so they can be replaced every 3 years, but if we can stretch an extra year or 2 it's totally worth it.
Replacing servers has become a bit of a chore to convince management. A 3 year old server works just fine, but the warranty for the next 3 years costs about the same as a brand new server (which includes 3 more years of warranty).

I've never heard it before... but I've got a Mark IV Bullshit Detector™, and usually mock people for believing in urban legends.... so they don't bring many of them to my attention.
@Holocryptic I was going through the event logs on one of my servers yesterday and I got concerned because there were no warnings or errors at all. I thought what idiot has turned those off.. we might miss something important. Turns out this is just a really well behaved server!
I know, not even some silly app on it logging nonsense with warning or error levels. I seriously wasted like 10 minutes trying to figure out where the warnings/errors had been turned off :/
