Q: Manage Exchange 2007 from Windows 7

GrantCan someone tell me what tools I need to remotely manage Exchange 2007 from a Windows 7 PC? something similar to the remote administration tools used to manage active directory. If these tools exist, can a link be provided as well?

@studiohack umm yes

okay thanks @Jacob, migrating

It would be super-helpful to be able to highlight within code blocks. How do I make a request for that?

9:39 AM
Scenario: Client Windows 7 Pro on a W2k3 Domain. User resolves a machine's name. Tries \\name\share and gets permission denied. Tries \\IP\share and is allowed access.
any ideas?

@JohntheSeagull No offence but you should post on the main site. As you can see, there's a grand total of 8 people here - quite literally thousands see the main site, and you'd get much more exposure there

None taken, just in case one of you had seen this before
Because these strange things don't lend themselves well to become questions, imo

I can only give you a quick pointer as I'm working at the mo', but check your DNS is alright. Do nslookup servername and then do tracert servername - I'll bet DNS thinks it's got a different IP than it really does

9:57 AM
tracer-tee is awesome.

anyone else seen the nice easter egg if you type rm -rf here (not in console)?

Only about 6 months ago.

Uugghhhh we have building works going on all around us and the place is shaking. I hope my servers are OK downstairs :/

Is there a badge called Necromancer?

There is, but it involves doing a bare metal linux install on a badger.

Been there, done that. But it was a Capybara, no badgers here.

I've never even heard of those before. Wow are they ugly.
The capybara reminds me of an aborted, failed breeding between a schnauzer and a gerbil.

biggest rodent on earth afaik

12:20 PM
@coredump bigger than a lawyer ... wow :)

@Zypher you know what looks well on a lawyer?
@Greg yes, it gets boring after the third time :P

hmmm ... not sure

No, way better
NginX stable 1.0 is out

What's that?

guys
really?

Is that like an Apache knockoff?

Sorry, I'm sure it's adorable and all, but I only hang out in the non-padded playground.

@Holocryptic Chocolate Rain? On Friday?

@TomOConnor It depends on how you breathe on the microphone.

@Zypher I would expect that as a sysadmin @coredump would have long ago surrendered his soul.

@voretaq7 what is this soul thing you speak of?

@Holocryptic nevermind, it's not important.

2:32 PM
Anyone know if its possible to auto-insert a signature server-side with Exchange 2007?

@DanBig cryptographic signature, or annoying "Please consider the environment before printing this email" signature?

@DanBig I'm reasonably sure that sigs are handled client side only
and the first hit on a search says that as well

I only know of 3rd party apps to do that global signature.

@GregD At my last place we did it by proxying exchange through sendmail. But we did that mainly because we didn't want to expose old (hackable) versions of exchange to the internet - Being able to append crap to messages was a bonus ;)

Basically, i was thinking it would be nice to generate a sig server side, and pull attributes, such as name, number and title, then pop some text and hyperlinks (disclaimer) at the bottom.

2:41 PM
@DanBig script to auto generate a sig for 2003 and 2007 clients robwhitehouse.com/windows/…

@Holocryptic, that was my first thought, that it was client side only, but i figured id ask
Mainly the reason, is some people use multiple devices, laptop, OWA, desktop and mobile device, would be nice to have a standard sig generated server side, so each device is identical. I know 3rd party products exist, just trying to avoid those on the first go-around

@DanBig yeah, it sucks having to recreate the signature each time for a new client device.
I wish they stored the sigs on the server, so you had access to them regardless of where you're accessing from. Kind of like the mail rules.

@DanBig we use Exclaimer - It's a really neat product, does what you want (attributes from AD, catches OWA, ActiveSync and all that)

@GregD can you dynamically modify the disclaimer to pull custom user attributes? I don't see that mentioned...

2:47 PM
@GregD, i'll take a look at that and @BenPilbrow, I'll check out Exclaimer

I don't think so, if you need it modified per user, then use something like what @Ben mentioned

@DanBig You can add text link Voretaq mentioned, but not a crypto sig or anything complicated. It's also the same for everyone.. It's been a while so I don't remember the details.. IIRC there are 3rd party products that can do a lot more.

Exclaimer can be a bit spendy (I guess that's subjective really), but IMHO well worth it

@BenPilbrow, how many licenses do you have? Is it worth it?

Err hang on

2:51 PM
I wrote a script that generates signatures for Outlook from AD info... But it doesn't do OWA, phones, or any number of other systems that might interface with e-mail.

Exclaimer looks to be around $10/user

@DanBig actually less spendy than I thought - 250 users, ~£650 (we had a bit of a discount because we upgraded an old version, so YMMV slightly)

I'll look into it, thanks.

@BenPilbrow guess what?

Friday friday friday

@Holocryptic FF is doing more weird shit?

But we tried a lot of stuff, maybe we missed something.

F#@$&^) apple
updated my ipod, and it didn't auto-sync after

@Zypher ugh I hate that

so i get on the train, and go to listen to music

no music. must…kill…EVERYONE!

"You must sync before you can use music"
AHHGGGGG
thank god for a 3g card and pandora

3:10 PM
@Zypher You didn't blow Steve Jobs a kiss, did you? I hear you have to do that before he'll let you listen to his music.

ah damnit
that's where i messed up

@Holocryptic Don't make fun of TheSteve! He'll wrap you in a reality distortion field that makes everyone else think you're that snake that escaped from the zoo!
(but you'll be a revolutionary and magical snake...)

@voretaq7 at least then I'll have a 2-week vacation because no one will be able to find me

@Holocryptic true...

@Holocryptic That reminds me... We're starting to deploy MS FEP; it's the Security Essentials program with a different title and policy to manage settings.... Talk about minimal effort to change the product.

3:13 PM
do you know how many strings they had to change??
(Only the visible ones)

@voretaq7 I'll bet money the source code has a DEFINE PRODUCT_NAME "xyz" at the beginning of some header file and that's the only difference.

@ChrisS hahahaha

@ChrisS <Siegfried >Zis is MICROSOFT! We don't #define here!</Siegfried >

That's what the [STRINGS] section in the .ini files are for. :)

@jscott damn right!

3:18 PM
reg key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client, value name ProductName, value data "FEP 2010"

I think FEP 6000 would be an more awesomer name :)

@ChrisS hmm, can I override that with something under HKEY_CURRENT_USER?

no idea if the program checks...

@ChrisS Is FEP an updated FF Client Security? Ah, just checked and it is.

Yeah, the 2010 client.

3:21 PM
Figures I push all this crap out, and we're behind versioning already.
Which is only fair, as I had to install MOM 2005 for this bastardized solution.
@Zypher that sounds like it should be stenciled on the business end of an RPG

@Holocryptic which is wat makes it MORE AWESOME !

@Zypher You know what would make it even more awesomerer? MORE COWBELL!

YES!

@Holocryptic Boobs can only be improved by MORE COWBELL.
I weep. I really do.

Q: yum suddenly shows 131 updates available

smusumecheI am running CentOS and have yum-updatesd running everyday and notifying me of any updates. A few days ago, yum started telling me that there are 131 updates available. What would cause it to do this? Was the CentOS repo just updated?

@voretaq7 I didn't know you were into beastiality...

3:28 PM
Obligatory.

damnit.. Youtube block. Is that the Golden compass?

@Holocryptic my video? It's "I Kissed a Squirrel (and I liked it)"

damn, I'll have to watch that tonight

@Holocryptic You're running MOM still?! Not SCCM?

penis

3:32 PM
@coredump NO STAR FOR YOU!

BOOBS
2

@ChrisS Welcome to my nightmare...

@Holocryptic Yikes. Sorry!

@ChrisS the machinations of me implementing a truly one server solution was mind boggling. WSUS, FF and MOM 2005 on one VM. Plus SQL 2005 STD and all the reporting.

I've got WSUS, FF, SCCM, and an App-V Steaming/Management server all on the same VM. They're usually not too bad, but SQL and Reporting is on another dedicated SQL VM.

3:37 PM
gah, why won't netflix let me speficy the buffering options
every tiny blip in connectivity and it completely rebuffers

@Zypher Content owners are digital idiots and put a zillion restrictions in the contracts limiting what Netflix exposes to customer.... I think the player isn't allowed to have anything but play/pause/ff/rewind or something like that.

uhg facepalm ... then why did they hire Real networks engineers to design their buffering
the whole point of buffering is so that ... you can survive changes in connectivity

had to hire someone and not allowed to use open source software....

…the net result of which is angry users who get fed the fuck up and download the content from bittorrent sites, without paying anything to the content owners.
Moral of the story: content owners are usually short-sighted braindead fucktards.

today is not a good media day for me!

3:40 PM
Don't blame Netflix, they're doing the best they can with what Content owners will allow.

@voretaq7 what are these bittorrent sites you speak of?

@voretaq7 not just "usually", basically always.

@ChrisS I blame Netflix just as much as the content owners. They should refuse to provide a crap product and let the masses pressure the content owners.

i know ... and the sad part is i have no problem paying a reasonable fee for media that isn't brainded .. "pay me 20$ and you can watch 1x"

@ChrisS there are a few notable exceptions (mostly indies)
@Holocryptic Nevermind, it's probably blocked for you like everything else. You just go back to surfing your gopher:// URLs :-)

3:41 PM
@voretaq7 the masses are too dumb to pressure content owners and Netflix can make profit providing crap....

that's fine, don't let me adjust the buffering, just don't be f'in stupid about it
people do have flaky connetions ... liek a 3g card on a train!

@ChrisS and this is why the world is going to hell in a hula-hoop.
@Zypher hell my FiOS connection isn't rock-steady. Sometimes streaming videos isn't the only thing I'm doing!

I really need to explore amazon's VOD options

@Zypher I've said that for a long time... I'll pay $30 for the first stream and $10/mo for each additional. But I want MKV/h264/AAC at a reasonable quality, and almost every movie or TV show available on DVD or already broadcast (TV). Feel free to embed my e-mail (or ID) in the steam so if I pirate it you can cut me off too....

@ChrisS YES!
i'm actually going to try to do with out cable tv for a while
get a roku box
and buy stuff a la carte

3:44 PM
I stopped trying to pirate any music when I could get it at reasonable prices/terms via iTunes and Amazon... and I recommend to everyone I know that they do the same (most have followed). Movies and TV shows haven't followed suit yet.

Hmm, I'm apparently #58 for the month rank. shakes fist Not good enough! Oh sorry, I just channeled my Dad from when I was a teenager up till about a year ago.

@Holocryptic Tell me about it. That asshole @voretaq7 is ahead of me.

One day I'll feel like I actually know what I'm talking about and have a really cush (sp kush, coosh...) job that I can work remotely. And a pair of boobs I can legally call mine.

I'm #50, heck Jacob is ahead of me!

great.. our new telephony provider had a meeting with us today
telling us that their hosted SIP platform is delyed atleast a half year

3:54 PM
Yikes, we're moving to SIP later this month.
Should be an interesting experience.

I now have .. 18 days to move 70 phones from hosted cisco callmanager to Avaya
wich includes 6 remote offices
I need a drink :|
thank god our cisco switches are supporting the avaya phones out of the box

@pauska that...sucks...

@ChrisS The shitty part is that SIP doesnt provide anything other than voice

We've got a Cisco CUE/CME system... It works well enough but I'm not terribly impressed by it either.

Wich is why they delayed the project.. phone book etc not ready

3:56 PM
@pauska What else would it provide??
Ah; gotcha.

@ChrisS Im not saying SIP is bad :p

@ScottPack that's OK I've been slow on answering questions - you'll probably pass me :)
@ChrisS I consider iTunes season prices for TV shows reasonable, and most movies are OK.
@pauska @ChrisS I'll say it: SIP SUCKS! :-)

4:12 PM
@voretaq7 Same here, it's been a week since I was able to put any time into anything

holy shit ... DAS BOOT ... i'm in trouble

boobs
@Zypher Franziskaner Weissbier hmmm

haha

@Zypher remember to turn the boot
I wonder what they did for est. years 1939-1945. Bet those were pretty dry...

@Holocryptic EVERYONE WAS ON VACATION!

4:28 PM
@voretaq7 man, I wish I could take a 6 year vacation.

@Holocryptic PAID vacation. I could take 6 years off right now but I'd run out of money in about 2 :-/

@voretaq7 I'd run out of money in about a month. I'm living on the edge, and it's giving me a wedgie.

Living on the edge you say!

4:44 PM
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
D'OH!

people on the second plane must be terrified

@coredump my understanding is that there were in fact passengers on board both planes

@voretaq7 colective pant-shitting!

all the recent shenanigans with planes lately makes me want to swear off flying. Which sucks because the TSA examination is the best part of the flight.

@coredump I would assume

4:51 PM
@Holocryptic Particularly after being married for a long time. Finally some action!

@ScottPack wouldn't know. Terminally single.
Ha! Get it? Terminally! Like an airport term... nevermind. I need to go home...

@Holocryptic Wow, what did I do to deserve such pun-ishment?

@ScottPack you're in this room, which is grounds for commitment to a clinic in most law abiding states.

Please just stop... we did this for like 20 messages in a row the other day and I'm still recovering.

The best thing is I don't realize I've made a pun until after the fact. Like just now.

4:57 PM
@ChrisS It's cool, that's about the best I got for puns.

sunglasses I'm all punned out.
Damnit I just walked this luser through a password change. Now she can't access the accounting DB and locked herself out of her RDC session. Again.
If you can't type your damn password in 10 minutes after we set it, how the hell are you supposed to manage the finances?
2

@Holocryptic After the second password reset she needs to come up to IT to give a blood sample before you can reset it again.

"I'm not sure if it's me or the computer". Trust me honey, it's you.
3

@Holocryptic at least she's not sure the evil computer is out to get her

sigh...
But she sure knows where the caps lock is.

5:14 PM
Ah, russian brides... one day...

@Holocryptic I get that one from time to time too.... really annoying.

Just dropping this for your Tuesday enjoyment. youtube.com/watch?v=hUCyvw4w_yk

Crisis averted. Moving on.

5:30 PM
@BartSilverstrim At least they aren't calling it "stealing"...

I'm trying to figure out why they have Klingons.
They also only obliquely reference that the pirates are stealing it to resell.

@BartSilverstrim "It seemed like a good idea at the time" =]

Interesting story only in that it highlights my own biases towards our hypocritical government.
Wait, you're in the US, right @ChrisS? I don't know if I should be indignantly miffed at you or not for pointing out our foreign flaws if you weren't.

China can go piss up a rope, all things considered. I hear the glass housing market is really taking off, even in light of the recession.
Which isn't saying our own gov is all unicorn farts and griffon poo, either.

6:15 PM
Nice.

@BartSilverstrim Yeah, I'm just over in MI. You can be indignantly miffed all you want, pointing out flaws is never a bad thing if there's room for improvement (which is how we should take that list).

dear god I'm sleepy.
we need corporate naptime.

@voretaq7 NO! You must continue to slave away for your corporate overlords! cracks whip

6:30 PM
steals whip
why @Holocryptic - I didn't know you were in to that sort of thing!
I should have figured though, what with the interest in "I Kissed a Squirrel"

@voretaq7 Oh, I'm into all sorts of stuff. I just never get to enact any of it in real life

I've got a few of them around, but I already put in the CAR to replace them, so they should be happy soon enough.

@ChrisS My students think like that

@Holocryptic I'm sure most of the damage is just for shits and giggles. Teens tend to do that.

6:34 PM
Although it's more of an "It's not my property, so if I break it someone else will fix it"
yep

we use Macs -- always trying to get 5 years out of 'em.

Here's a question I've been pondering. If you guys use free/open source backends, what do you use for client side? Do you have a separate windows domain to handle that stuff?
barring @voretaq7 who uses the devils own tools

@Holocryptic In my previous life as a developer we wrote custom middleware that auth'd against AD and interacted with open-source/non-domain-aware backends

@voretaq7 that's interesting. Just one of a million things I wonder about on the long drive home.

it really depends what you're trying to interact with though

6:46 PM
hm. I guess I just see corporate environments as running Windows clients for the most part, but I see a lot of *nix backends and such.

We're M$ top to bottom; makes a lot of things easier, other things harder, and everything would have higher up-front costs if we weren't a Partner.

And then that gets me thinking about productivity software. .doc(x) is pretty standard, so do other users have to use Office for Mac and other stuff to get by?
things like that

@Holocryptic You mean Office for Mac?

oops. Yeah :)

There's also OpenOffice, which if you like MS Office 97, you'll love OOO
2

6:49 PM
yeah, seen that too. Not impressed.

openoffice has too many compatibility barfs unfortunately

I'm really struck by how the OOO community wants to hold on so badly to that Office 97 look/feel/functionality.

I had some dillhole send one of my users an ODF for a job application. I told my user he shouldn't even bother.

@ChrisS screw that -- how about letting me edit .???x files

I know if you've never used the Ribbon before, it's daunting and had a moderate learning curve; but after you get used to it you'll be at least as fast as before, and most people I know are notably quicker.

6:50 PM
@Holocryptic no. Send me a PDF or plain text. If you send me .doc, .odf, .sxw, .abi, .rtf or anything else I throw it out.

@voretaq7 What about PostScript?

Notepad FTW

@ChrisS No. on the grounds that it can contain executable code.

@voretaq7 As opposed to pdf?

@ScottPack preview doesn't execute any embedded code :-)

6:53 PM
Smells like a challenge

Smells like teen spirit

if you can find a vulnerability/vector let me know -- I'd be interested in reporting it to apple

@Holocryptic I'll never forget the first time I heard that song on the classic rock station. God that was a bad feeling.

Smells like Nirvana ?

@ScottPack I can't stand that group. Sure they're iconic. I just don't want to listen to his whiney angst ridden self.
I'm just glad that Dave Grohl moved on to something bigger and better

7:04 PM
@voretaq7 5 Years! Seems like a long time... My laptop is ~2.5 and I'm ready to trade up, though it will go to someone else for a year or two. Certain upgrades extend the useful life; but I think my limit is ~4 years.

With me quitting smoking, I'm hoping to have more disposable income to drop on hardware/software fun stuff.

@ChrisS It's a long cycle - we amortize them out over 3 years, so they can be replaced every 3 years, but if we can stretch an extra year or 2 it's totally worth it.

And dates

Replacing servers has become a bit of a chore to convince management. A 3 year old server works just fine, but the warranty for the next 3 years costs about the same as a brand new server (which includes 3 more years of warranty).

@ChrisS generally we run 'em until they fail with no warranty (and redundant pairs)
It takes 2-3 days from PO to rack & stack to deploy a new box, so…

7:17 PM
True that getting replacements are quick... Our cluster is N+1 redundant, so we've got 1 server out of warranty.
We've got a testing environment that needs some updates/upgrades/warranty; we're talking about what to do there right now.

@ChrisS yeah I try to roll my hefty hardware into the test/vmware labs where practical
I don't care if the lab isn't under warranty :-D

Our test environment could stand to go down on certain days, but if it went on a day where they were using it for a sales pitch, it wouldn't be good.

Q: Does Red Bull Energy Drink contain sperm from a bull?

AlaukikI heard this claim and burst into laughter assuming it was a joke, but the person said he was being serious. Is this true that red bull contains sperm of a bull?

no comment

Is there even an "offtopic" for skeptics then?

I love the tag on that

heh

Is there a dietary advice SE? Do you think Does bull sperm contain more calories than human sperm is on-topic there?

@BenPilbrow Yes. Please oh please post it!

7:43 PM
hahahaha
link!

@BenPilbrow [move-to-cooking.stackexchange.com]

cooking.se
yes!
@hobodave will love that one I'm sure

I can just see it now: "I drink a lot of Red Bull. How many calories are in bull sperm (an ingredient in Red Bull) so I know how much longer I have to spend at the gym to burn it off?"
Also, is that myth really that common? I've honestly never heard of that before

@BenPilbrow [move-to-fitness.stackexchange.com]

@BenPilbrow Never heard that myth.... I don't drink the stuff, but others in the office do.

7:51 PM
I've never heard it before... but I've got a Mark IV Bullshit Detector™, and usually mock people for believing in urban legends.... so they don't bring many of them to my attention.

Sounds exactly like the sort of gross thing they'd love to talk about.

Mmm maybe because I think it tastes foul and so don't drink it is also why I haven't heard of it. (Red Bull that is....)

!!!

UGH I hate fios, I pay 50 a mont for a /28

I don't care for Red Bull, but Amp is pretty good if I need a kick in the ass.

7:53 PM
@Jacob please hold your rant for a moment - you're currently interrupting a conversation involving the nutritional value of bull sperm :-)

@Jacob How much did you think you'd get? Isn't FiOS a residential service?

@Jacob, I thought it was "FiOS FTW!"

@jscott nope I have business class(My employer covers some of the cost as I host a Backup VM)
@DanBig minus IP pricing yes

16 hosts isn't bad for business class

@DanBig 13 :( and at 50 a month extra it is

7:58 PM
@Jacob It's a little pricey.. I've found $2/ip/mo is pretty standard.

8:40 PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
I've been replaced....
in Ask Ubuntu General Room, 46 secs ago, by Daniel0108
@Jacob I'm the youngest user ;)

Sweet baby Jesus. My DC event logs look like millions of little stops signs all in a row.

@Jacob Welcome to the world of technology. You're only the newest, bestest and shiniest thing for about a month :-)

@Holocryptic You called?

@Jacob you wish

@Holocryptic I was going through the event logs on one of my servers yesterday and I got concerned because there were no warnings or errors at all. I thought what idiot has turned those off.. we might miss something important. Turns out this is just a really well behaved server!

8:43 PM
@Jacob You're the Second Coming like I'm Tina Turner

@BenPilbrow *good server, you've been a good boy, heres soom RAM

@BenPilbrow can I work with you?

@BenPilbrow a month is good going

hell, in looking at my DNS it looks like we don't have scavenging working...

@Holocryptic When am I taking your job?
@Holocryptic I'm good with DNS :P

8:45 PM
The way things are going, sooner rather than later. Especially with $4.25/gal gas

I know, not even some silly app on it logging nonsense with warning or error levels. I seriously wasted like 10 minutes trying to figure out where the warnings/errors had been turned off :/
