Why would you advise someone to clean a heavily infected computer of malware instead of nuking it? serverfault.com/questions/327003/…

Q: Cleaning up a boot-disk by mounting it in another computer

PeterI am helping a friend out who has made quite a mess of his windows PC. Problem is that thar are lots of viruses, maybe rootkits and the like, I'm not a specialist. A google redirect among other things, and It's almost impossible to get the whole disk clean... (antivirus and antispyware are int...

Someone plus oned the advice to run a boot disc with AV to clear it.

It is a valid method, if you don't have the ability to wipe it. Not ideal, but thems the breaks in some situations.

In this particular case, I'm not so sure. Loaded with malware, and he doesn't know what he's doing ("I'm not a specialist...")

True. I just voted to move to SU.
If it's as bad as he says, you're right, it's probably just best to nuke it. But if it's a mild infection, I'd be inclined to go the "Pull the drive out and scan from a different computer" route.

On the other hand; if it is a girl's PC, maybe he should just clean it up a bit and send it back.... She'll be reinfected in a month -> another visit =]

12:43 PM
Cute girls never have systems that work long after finding lonely pet nerd to fix it for some reason.

@Holocryptic I'm always hesitant to do that; unless you're absolutely sure you got everything and prevented it from coming back, they'll inevitably get Zeus and visit their banking website first thing...

hmm, that is a risk

I'm curious why there isn't a bigger push from geeks to have hot astronauts in space. Gives them something to focus their telescopes on during space missions.

Real geeks would be more excited about a person going into space (particularly a new destination or means of travel) than what they look like...

Mating in space is important to learn about. FOR SCIENCE!
2

12:51 PM
I so want to do that

If I were an astronaut, I'd take that scream ghost costume with me and wait for an astronaut to talk to mission control before hurling myself from the background with a curved blade towards the camera behind the other astronaut and screaming bloody murder.

So, have any of you civil servants gone through a two-factor RFP?

hello folks

@ScottPack Like an RFP for Two-Factor Auth?

@ChrisS Indeed

1:03 PM
I'm partial to PKCS#11 cards, but there's lots of Enterprisy Solutions out there.

If smartcards are your fancy, I use the Raak C2-40 line of cards at home for fun and profit.
though PKCS#11 drivers are enterprise and expensive

Hrm; those are a pretty good price. But you're saying they need additional drivers for a Windows 6.1 environment?

Nope, there is a win7 driver for them, and it works like a charm
but PKCS#11 write will cost you

Gotcha

There is a free PKCS#11 reader driver but it seemed kind of difficult to make behave.

1:13 PM
Meh; as long as the MS CSP works with them; that's about all the more I'd use them for. We've been kicking around the idea for accessing our terminal server. Most vendors want to sell a bloated "solution" with their own auth software (including GINA replacement), management interfaces, and maintenance costs.

Unrelated, but I'm not thrilled with what they've done with Google Reader. It kind of hurts to look at, really

Who uses Google Reader?

er... me?

It's some kind of website aggregator?

RSS feed reader

1:24 PM
I hated their interface for gmail. Why would I think it would make reading websites as easy as reading your email after seeing their idea of easy to use email interfaces?

@Holocryptic You're not the only one who feels that way.

I got scolded by a diamond for a one word answer. They're no fun. If they didn't want one word answers, why does <!--------------------- filler-----------> work?

Technicalities. It's what geeks live for.

Q: Does the TCP source port have to be unique per host?

lxgrI've learned that a TCP connection is identified by the tuple (source IP, source port, destination ip, destination port). Theoretically, it should thus be possible to have a client from host1:port1 connect to server1:port1 and at the same time another client (running on host1) from host1:port1 to...

My answer was Yes. to that question. Which I think is entirely appropriate.

I liked the "stop it."

1:37 PM
@KennyRasschaert Yeah, I saw some stuff on it. I didn't know what they were talking about because mine was still showing the old interface. Then I did a hard refresh. And it sucked.

@BartSilverstrim haha, that made me laugh
Honestly, it's a long, but ultimately shitty question.
I felt like a one word answer was both appropriate and complete.

I like this one.

Q: Please help to amend this script that can automatically reboot server by condiction

user167043please could someone help me to correct below scripts that can automatically reboot Centos 5 server once the memory less than 85 and server load over 3. I found this script via Google,I checked it and found there are syntax errors,but I know nothing on bash script programming,so I need your help ...

"Use Monit"
"Too complicated. I'd rather use this script I don't understand."
"I think you know nothing on server" - um...I know you're not supposed to have to reboot it all the time because you have a borked configuration.

huh...my review button disappeared...odd

1:56 PM
haha

2:13 PM
@MikeyB that was the best answer I found too. My solution: Run wget through Python's equivalent of the system() call

Heh. I think I narked off my nearest Best Buy store last night. Went in after a bit of networking kit, saw they had a price match promise against Amazon.co.uk and any high street store. Whipped out RedLaser (on my Android, price comparison app), found the same thing on Amazon for £95 (down from £119 in best buy) and got the thing £25 +10% difference off. The guy serving me didn't look too impressed.
>:D

Ha!

fuck best buy with a rubber dick

I think "narked" means something different on that side of the pond.. Over here it is to betray someone by telling the truth.

@MarkM I didn't make the trip specially, just in the area.
@ChrisS Narked = annoyed

2:20 PM
Got ya

@tombull89 Good. WorsyBuy deserves it.
@ChrisS Both meanings fit here.

@ChrisS I think it's more narc'd here. Narc = narcotics officer.

Interesting, hadn't heard that meaning

I'll admit that i've never seen anyone spell it

@MarkM Depends on how educated the user of the term is.

2:21 PM
haha true

They were cheaper than most of the high-street stores in the UK and beat my normal online retailers by £20 as well. Although Best Buy do go in my "Despised High Street Store" list, along with PC World, Dixons, Comet and Currys.

Think Markm is right...narcing on someone is to tattle on their stash, man.

On a route to Philly in my area, there is a crappy furniture store called "Best Buy Furniture" with the 'Furniture' in really small text, the store is yellow and blue in color and it is hilarious to drive by every single time.

I usually refer to them as Worst Buy; their prices are almost always the highest in the area.

They were trying to get me to sign up to some "e-reciept" thing and their line was "Best Buy doesn't sell your info". lol, no.

2:23 PM
I did get a good sony record player from there at a reasonable price
That's the only thing I can think of that I've bought there in the last 5 years or so

@Shads0 "There's a store called Breast Buy - FALSE. ADVERTISING. They only let you rent them for a few hours and you have to bring them back in the same condition you got them!" - Standard Comedy Skit #427
3

I was fairly impressed with the store, but some prices were a bit...out. £37 for Battlefield 3 PC? Nah, I'll go to Asda for £27.

@tombull89 Trade, Give Away, Leak.... just not sell.

@tombull89 They DON'T sell it! Like @ChrisS said...

Just as well I didn't then.

2:24 PM
I'm ok with it for some things, but the part that annoys me the most is the cashiers that will NEVER stop trying to sell you their stupid plan crap or geek squad.

That's not their fault
it's like the card-reading tech support weenies - If they don't follow the script they're taken out to the stockroom and beaten with overpriced HDMI cables

I worked at Sears for a bit and there's a big wall in the back of each employee's monthly Credit Card signups and Warranties sold.. They pushed that stuff very heavily.

@voretaq7 Those argon filled, 36 karat cables are necessary!

One day getting a basic wireless router and USB receiver for my GF's house, the cashier saw the dongle and was constantly telling me the device will break and I should spend the extra $20 for the replacement plan on a $15 dongle. I told her no politely at first, then she kept going on saying they're crap and should always have a warranty.

@ScottPack 36Kt what? I demand my cables be made of the purest platinum!

2:27 PM
@Shads0 That's the main thing about my "High Street Store list". DO you want cover against accidental damage. - NO. I'm not a monkey. Do you want geek squad to charge you £40 to install office? No. Do you want - NO. GO AND DIE IN A FIRE.

I firmly told her no and then she rang up the router and went on the same tangent about how fragile they are and that her last one "literally exploded, and it apparently happens all the time". I lost it at this point and said something like "I think working with this shit would entitle me to more knowledge about them than you do selling it" but laden with a lot more profanity and shouting.

I still get that from people all the time. I'll pull out a $1.25 HDMI cable I got from eBay and they'll say something stupid like "That cable doesn't support digital TV though; you need to get one of the Monster 24K solid cables"

Nothing but the best for my digital signal that either gets there or doesn't and wouldn't know the difference between .1% attenuation and 1% attenuation!

@voretaq7 You mean MONSTER cables?

@Shads0 I've wished to do that for a long, long time. It'll happen one day.

2:28 PM
Of course after plugging the cable in; they'll claim there's a visible difference.

@Shads0 I don't think Best Buy carries Monster cables
@ChrisS Put the cable in a $5 black velvet box. Sell it to them for $250. They'll claim "better quality".

@Shads0 I do like monster for instrument cables just because of their warranty

@ChrisS Oh I know they push it, working Electronics at Target showed that to me very quickly, but I always yelled at the management saying 'why should i sell shit to people that don't need it" and bein 6' 4" (193cm for our EU folk) helped keep them off my back >:)

AND you walk away making a tidy $240 in profit :-)

@Shads0 Not to be confused with Monster Minigolf. Those brand infringing bastards!

2:30 PM
@ChrisS I won't buy from ebay (trust issues mostly) but $5 from newegg ain't so bad IMO

@ScottPack 23kt golf clubs, clad in the finest rich corinthian leather (cough*Naugahyde*cough)

@Shads0 In that case I'll sell them to you for $4.75 =]
Might not be delivered quite as quick as NewEgg however...
I've bought plenty of HDMI, HDMI-DVI, DP-HDMI, etc cables off eBay. I don't think I've paid more than $2 for a 6' cable (except the HDMI-DP adapters, can't get cables, have to get adapters, licensing or something like that)

There's a Newegg DC about 30 miles from my house, I love it

Holy balls
that's awesome

2:36 PM
^That
wait what...odd, I intended it to be a joke...but ok

Blank?
that's even awesomer

@Shads0 LOLOLOL. Nice Try. Doesn't work. It's a 1px by 1px gif.

^that was what I was trying to link

I can't QuickMeme - Apparently it requires Flash.
stupid Flash

@voretaq7 ...what?!

2:38 PM
Sounds like it and Geek Squad go hand in hand

user image
2

Fuck flash
And quickmeme's inability to save off images sux

Yep
quickmeme is fail
that one made me laugh out loud at my desk though
and whoever starred it while it was an empty onebox is a dick

Unfortunately, memegenerator doesn't have this image...yet.

2:40 PM
goes into browser source to pull image

@MarkM You're welcome

haha

Someone did the same to mine anyway, 'cept the delivery was awesomer

I thought that was a valid troubleshooting step?

2:41 PM
@Holocryptic Soon they will be coming to us, and then WE will be controlling the Geek Squad Evil Laugh

@Holocryptic Yeah, but GS would charge you £20 for it.
GAAAAH. How do you explain to people that there is an issue with the network that they don't have the technical capability to understand? Mention anything even vaugely technical and they derp out.
I just need to say "the intertubes got tangled" and I'll be fine.

@tombull89 I tried to explain to someone over the phone about unplugging the network cable. She unplugged the VGA cable instead.

@tombull89 See also dracoinvictus.com/archive/index.php?topic=4952.0 for practical applications (took me some extra googling to turn up the story)

@voretaq7 I like this excuse generator as well

@tombull89 oh my yes!

2:49 PM
The cause of the problem is:
The monitor needs another box of pixels.

@tombull89 oh man I hate it when we run out.
The cause of the problem is:
We only support a 1200 bps connection.
by god - It's my old cable company!
"vapors from evaporating sticky-note adhesives" -- Ya know I might be able to convince people that that's actually a thing!

The cause of the problem is:
not properly grounded, please bury computer
The cause of the problem is:
That's a great computer you have there; have you considered how it would work as a BSD machine?

@Shads0 substantially better with less memory usage!
The cause of the problem is:
Hash table has woodworm.
The cause of the problem is:
Someone thought the Big Red Button was the light switch.
^^ I'm sure that's actually happened.

Just noticed you're posting the GS meme running around reddit.
Someone posted a link to a blog that was supposedly by that guy with the tattoo.
Apparently he is some nut that utterly loves working for GS.

3:05 PM
Yeah, I saw it on reddit, pretty weird :-)

@BartSilverstrim ...what? He can't be sane...

@tombull89 the question is was the insanity pre-existing, or did it develop after working for GS?

Have a link? Reddit (and knowyourmeme) is blocked here.

@tombull89 He has a GS tattoo. Draw your own conclusions.

I'll see if I can pull it up.

3:15 PM
I was the ‘Services Technical Supervisor’! I was 18 years old, and had people working for me as old as 63. I was king-shit!
God help us all
It's from Geek Squad Gus's blog that @BartSilverstrim linked to

I found it

Looks like he was ~22 when he posted that stuff. What a twisted, twisted life.
To be 22 and workin' at Geek Squad and be so certain that you're da' shit...just...wow.

The perfect vision of a Geek Squad Agent is 51% personality, and 49% technical. Calm the client down, assure them you are there to help, and then save their technical day, week, month or even life! I could not wait to get into the field, and start protecting the world!

Holy Fuck. Coworker is on his phone, and it's making beeping scrolling noises and OMGTURNITTHEFUCKOFF!

Ya, he'd never make it as a real systems admin.

3:20 PM
@MarkM I don't know - maybe he'd be a good cable monkey... meh nevermind, I don't think he'd fit in the underfloor...

@voretaq7 Not a chance

I squeak by on 10% technical. Honesly I don't know how I have a job.
2

@Holocryptic has to be at least 50% - I think you're overqualified for geek squad

If someone tried to give me a technical job titled Deputy of Counter Intelligence or Double Agent, I would turn it down on title alone.

@voretaq7 I don't know what I'm qualified for anymore

3:23 PM
You don't even qualify as someone of the current generation of texter's. You don't have enough typos.

@MarkM IDK, let me check out the pay differential first.

Money's not that important to me.

@Holocryptic Mindless slaughter?
@MarkM 1.5M a year for 2 years to have a shit title, then retire my ass - I'd take it.

@MarkM Can I haz ur munny?

I just read that blog post...I want to be ill.

3:24 PM
@voretaq7 No, I'm more of a targeted violence kind of person

@voretaq7 You'd retire on $3M? Seems weak to me. You can't even get a stealth chopper for that.

I need enough money to sip champaign and drop dollar bills on OWS protesters. Or have my butlers do that. Whichever strikes my fancy.

It would be enough to make a deathray to target that guy specifically

And buy a bullhorn to broadcast my haughty laugh.

@MarkM it'd pay off my apartment, car, buy me a nice plane & leave me around $1.5M after taxes finish raping me - I'd be able to work because I want to, not because I have to :-)

3:27 PM
Oh, Voretaq and his silly dreams.

@voretaq7 You could work for Geek Squad

And get a cool tattoo

@MarkM I WOULD work for geek squad

That dream rates right up there with the one that doesn't end with me in the fetal position at night, drinking and taking pills to forget my days.
2

think of the havoc I could cause in the half hour I'd last!

3:28 PM
@voretaq7 You would just install BSD or Gentoo on everyone's computer and scream FIX IT YOURSELF

@voretaq7 GET OUT AND NEVER DARKEN THE HALLS OF THIS CHAT AGAIN...wait, why?

@Shads0: that's one step extra than what Meta tells you.

Not. True.
I would throw an install disk at them.
2
Or a Mac.

Macs do more damage on impact with the skull.

3:29 PM
the MacBook Air is very light and well balanced. If you sharpen the edges it could make a wonderful throwing star!

All those aerodynamics

…not that I'm speaking from experience or anything... ::vacuums up aluminum shavings from desk::

Apple TV's make a good bludgeon =D

@Shads0: really, they don't.
The thing is the size of a deck of cards.
You're thinking of Mac Mini's.

@Shads0 so would an iMac screen...

3:34 PM
@tombull89 the LCD alone is the weight of the whole thing so that has great validity

@Shads0 you could say...that that idea...has puts on sunglasses weight awww yeahhhh

Cédric GirardI am building a custom Debian CD to install a Debian web server with our software, and it have to handle a printer, which can be any existing printer. back to best buy for a moment
Holy overpriced batman
And the first product feature says
Compatible with most HDMI components

But it has a VGRIP CONNECTOR!

3:47 PM
It can VGrip my balls.

I NEEEEEEEED A VGRIP CONNECTOR - The geek squad special double agent told me so!
also doesn't 35 feet violate the HDMI spec?

NOT IF IT COSTS $250

actually
thats nothing, look what I just found

@Shads0 lololol "Sorry, this page is filtered. - Category: Obscenity/vulgar language"

wtf

3:50 PM
@Shads0 Jesus Henrietta Christ! Is it made OF REAL PLATINUM???
Even fucking Monster doesn't have the balls to charge THAT much!

Read the reviews, they are the most hilariously scripted things on this earth

From the spec -- "Along with Critical Stable Geometry for high-quality audio and video signal transfer."
What does that even MEAN? Did you have to find some way to dress up "We put the required polymer filler in the cable to keep the individual wires separated/immobilized per the HDMI spec"??

It's also really long, I can put my DVD player upstairs and plug it into my downstairs TV. Also, it's gold plated, so when it breaks (it won't) or gets old you can sell it at a local CASH 4 GOLD.
WHAT THE F*********

@Shads0 WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN!!!

TOO MANY CAPS

3:54 PM
gah motherfucking....
Do what I say Amazon.

From a review:
On the other hand, one thing that IS good about it. I left the packaging lying on the kitchen table and my neighbor's hot college student daughter came over to borrow some sugar. She saw it and since she's a bit of a gold digger, immediately asked me out. We had a date on Friday night, starting with some shopping for her, followed by a really expensive, lavish dinner at a restaurant I can't pronounce. She liked it. I still slept alone. We're doing it again tomorrow night too. Maybe she'll hug me goodnight this time.

^^ That face. That is the face I make.
I figured that "the more you spend the better the product is", and boy was I right! Downing a grand on a cable that reaches from my living room to my bed room was the best decision I've ever made, i'll never have to move my playstation again! I could have bought a small car for this price, but come on you don't have to pay insurance for this!
best review on the site.
wait, no. this one is better:
I bought this HDMI cable, and the quality was so good that I bought another. I soon discovered that it was impossible to hook two of them up at once without extra hardware, so I went on Monoprice and bought a coupler for $0.79. I found that with two of these bad boys hooked up at once, the quality improved even more. I went ahead and refinanced my trailer and bought 6 more of these along with 6 more couplers and all I can say is WOW. These make my SDTV look even BETTER than any HDTV I've ever seen.

They are basically asking people to take the piss with those prices.

Monster Cables: When you absolutely need to know the correct shade of rash on the lead actress of your blu-ray porn.

they're asking people to sacrifice a testicle with those prices. And people WILL!
Damnfools.

3:59 PM
@voretaq7: you must be one of the 99%

@BartSilverstrim IDK - that nitrogen filled jacket seems to distort color toward the blue end of the spectrum....
@BartSilverstrim If I were I would festoon my home with merry garlands of $1000 HDMI cables, linked together by $50 couplers.

@voretaq7 reminds me of the reviews for Tuscon Whole Milk from Amazon amazon.com/Tuscan-Whole-Milk-Gallon-128/product-reviews/…

@Holocryptic Quoth the kitten, 'Get some more.'
also - really? Milk from Amazon?

@voretaq7 Don't forget to view the related items that people viewed. Hilarity will ensue.

4:06 PM
read the first review
For those of you who don't know, this is God's second novel after the Old Testament. It's a marked improvement, in my opinion. He got rid of a lot of his previous angst and scorn, and has really begun to show some of the maturity present in his later works. He's become a much more loving and kind God, and, noticeably, he doesn't throw nearly as many tantrums as he did in the first book.

God never got over the poor critical reception of the whole "Universe" concept.

hhahaha

also I personally like the Customer Photos for the milk.

^ that review of the milk is the best, imo

4:13 PM
Overclocking didn't work?!

@Holocryptic It did but unfortunately when you overclock this component the units you install it in tend to enter sleep mode shortly after.

steals from SU.Chat

@tombull89 my trackpad has Energizer batteries in it (Energizer Advanced - Not For Retail Trade - Made in Singapore)

4:29 PM
My trackpad has a macbook air attached to it that also powers it. It's a cool trick.

@tombull89 I'm getting a 404

Way to go, dumbass. You broked it.

4:41 PM
Cuz I was so looking forward to what SU had to say. Unless they're talking shit about us, in which case I say we go over there and exchange harsh words with them.

They can type?

I love that one

5:05 PM
So i try to save that image (I had already pulled it up) but Chrome saved the 404 page instead of the image. First fail.
Then I went into the cache to dig it out of there, but it turns out Chrome cached the 404 result. Double fail.

@MikeyB This one?
I did one better. I went to the root of the site and found the actual picture.

@MarkM A winner is you!
@MarkM Shoulda clicked on 'Upload' and said 'from the web' and pasted the URL so it'll be cached on imgur.

psh

Holy smokes. That is some epic shit right there.

leaving things for others to enjoy after I've enjoyed it already is dumb

5:11 PM

A guy in my fantasy football league just sent me a message rejecting a trade that I offered. It said "are you fucking high? no really. I'm serious."
I guess he didnt like my offer

I think he was trying to say "I have ascertained that the value to me of your trade is suboptimal. Please modify and resubmit."

He can suck it. I'm stacked and he doesnt stand a chance

5:43 PM
why do all the "make a GUI dialog box pop up from a shell script" commands suck so hard?

Because GUIs are for babies.

At Stack Exchange our use case for virtualization is growing. We are not going to run our core QA web servers and database servers using virtualization for performance reasons, but we do host things such as our monitoring system, blogs, domain controllers, and VPN servers.

Our collection of assorted services continues to grow, and with it so does our need to expand our virtualization setup. Currently in our main data center we have 3 VMWare ESX servers. But as we expand, how are we going to handle this growth? …
