4:46 AM
oh heh, that's what everybody was laughing about.

@ntechi - that question has been asked a lot on Server Fault. If you take a look at this question:
-2
Q: I want a VPS. Who do you recommend?

HankI'm looking at buying a VPS from Linode and, before I go spending my money, was curious if you'd recommend them. Where do you guys go when buying a VPS? Who would you recommend? Linodes IRC tech support looks pretty awesome... Note: I realise this question is subjective but I don't want to blo...

You'll see a fairly comprehensive list of other questions to look at in the comments

@Farseeker OK

5:00 AM
@Farseeker Hey thanks i really found some useful stuff, thanks

@ntechi - no worries

3 hours later…
8:04 AM
meep meep!

8:25 AM

9:04 AM
@Farseeker, it is a lot more active during the US work hours...

Good morning

10:57 AM
Where's the "You've got to be kidding, this is a terrible idea" button? serverfault.com/questions/225789/…
Oh, yeh.. Morning :D

yeah - they should give them all ipads

Can you put an iPad in an Autoclave?
Will it work afterwards?
"Will it steam? Let's find out"
Ohh. I wish i could be Tom Dickson.

Why does it need to be autoclaved ?

Because operating theatres are icky places full of icky sick people.

because of the new iSpeculum attachement

11:08 AM
haha
@Chopper3 iColonic

actually I just wrote an answer to that question - basically ask the real pros, not us :)

yep

brining a laptop into a O.R. room wich is supposed to be sterile
I cant imagine a more bad idea

An OR isn't a fully sterile environment. Only the area around the patient is scrubbed and sterile. Not everyone in an OR is scrubbed and sterile

11:58 AM
doh what a morning

whats up

12:19 PM
ohhh - just found out I'm off to washington some time in the next couple of months for a few days - have we got any SFer out that way? can't remember

12:31 PM
@Chopper3 I assume you mean State?

no, DC, speaking, on behalf of a customer, at a senate subcommittee

Hii I am planning to buy a cloud server for my wordpress site, but don't know how to configure it, can any one give me link of some websites from where I can learn configuration of cloud server

@Chopper3 So what you're telling me is that CSPAN might be worth watching for a few hours

12:50 PM
haha - hadn't thought of that
@ntechi there's no one guide to do it all, it depends on so many factors; the provider, the service you buy, the OS, what tools they give you - so many things, why not come back (on the main board) with some specific answerable questions

Does everything break on a Monday morning, or does it just feel like that's the case?

it did last Monday for me but not this week (so far!)

@Chopper3 OK i ll come as soon as I purchase it, but hope I ll get some good help over there, is there any suggestions for buying cloud server, I am buying it from rackspacecloud with the minimum config

1:06 PM
@ntechi - I really like linode.com

@ntechi I'm not your man for that kind of thing sorry, I build clouds not buy them

@Chopper3 I am new to buy or make cloud server, in my life I never purchased VPS also, this first time where I am trying something different from shared hosting to cloud servers

there's really no difference

@Chopper3 but when I was having chat with their service, they told me that its difficult to configure a cloud where I have to transfer my existing wordpress site from shared to cloud
@Chopper3 thats why I asked is their anything from where I can have basic of configuring cloud severs

again no basis for comment - like I say why no ask, specific, questions on the main board - that's what it's there for - also search on past questions too

1:21 PM
@Chopper3 yaa that I will do for sure, just last question instead for going VPS, is it beneficial that I go for Cloud server?

again, there's little difference

@Chopper3 what difference?

very little

@Chopper3 in terms of what performance? technical? or any other

Have a look at some past questions on the main board

Dan
1:24 PM
front page on reddit today, i hope SF never gets like that

@Dan front page??? wow, what a tool

@Dan There's something about his response that leaves a little to be desired. I just can't quite put my finger on it....

Dan
Yeah, it was titled "So, thats how stackoverflow works..."
Anyone use forefront for Exchange?

at least only one ref to SF in the comments

How did hans know there was a doevents from the info posted?

1:30 PM
This is what it sounds like when doevents cry

@chopper3: I see what you did there :-p

very, very poor wasn't it
planning my next US trip bart :)

Where to?

dc
see above

We're -14 or so right now in our area. Don't know what DC is like (it's about 5/6 hours away)

1:32 PM
tell you in, I think, mid-feb

You're going to the senate?
I mean...you're working with a senator, or you're going to present to them?

Dan
We are around -13 right now

@BartSilverstrim yeah, I'm speaking about internet privacy on behalf of a big ISP customer, nothing too interesting, bit of PR-come-geekiness - an hour tops

@BartSilverstrim Sucks for you guys, we're sitting at 12F/-11C, but about 6.5 hours out of DC.

@chopper3-so they're having a British IT person come over to talk to senators who don't even understand our version of English. Makes perfect sense.
Why don't you bring the first season of IT Crowd as a gift to them and see if they can figure out that you're making fun of them?

1:43 PM
You know its going to be a bad day when your server room aircon failed to both server rooms, as did the thing monitoring the environment, so that when you come in to work then not only are half the servers fried, but you scald your hands on the hot metal of the machine casing trying to get to power buttons to turn them off

@BartSilverstrim You're really giving them more credit than most of them deserve, thinking they might be able to figure it out....

@RobertMoir Egads. What was the ambient up to?

@RobertMoir Holy moly! No thermal shutdown?! All ours will crap out at 70ºC (or maybe it's 60; whatever the lowest setting is anyway...)

i think up to at least 80 in one room...

@RobertMoir I desperately hope that's an F, but if you got scaled I am terrified that it is a C.

1:47 PM
@BartSilverstrim I don't care, I get paid :)

well the feeling faint after being in there 10 mins and the (minor admittedly but still painful) burn on my hand say C

Maybe we should have more people with British accents talk to our reps. It's common in America for people with British accents to automatically be assumed members of Mensa.

we're only just getting back any semblance of normality now
I could go across and cure them of that assumption Bart

@BartSilverstrim I was a member when I was a kid - full of arseholes though

@Chopper3 And creepy/sad attempts to procreate.
That really sucks, @RobertMoir. I'm just not sure how else to respond.

1:49 PM
@Chopper3: You're not doing anything to stop the impression that you're an evil genius bent on ruling the world here.

@BartSilverstrim what it is bart is that I do a lot of PR bullshit for BT, HP, VMWare, Intel etc. and so get asked to do this kind of gig every now and then

i hate the heat at the best of times
yeah not the best way to come back after a week off
@Chopper just make sure you show them the internet. But get it degaussed first.

@BartSilverstrim it's the "Subcommittee on Communications and Technology" for what it's worth - on behalf of someone called frank lutenberg apparently

Oh..my...god. Chopper, you HAVE to bring that little box that holds the Internet to demonstrate to them. Please. Pretty please. I'll watch c-span just for that.
"The Internet doesn't weigh anything..."

i would find a way to watch it from the UK just for that

1:54 PM
I'm sure you're doing them a disservice, I'm just talking about how internet privacy in the UK and europe works and doesn't work - that's all

That's why the box doesn't have Windows. Bada bing!

@RobertMoir I used to do tech spokesman stuff for the SE so used to be on 'business lunch' with pig-face adrian chiles about 15 years ago

oh what fun!

usually just apologising for why half of london's dealers were sat with nothing to do :)

heh

@AliGibbs heh

Hmm...any way to get an amiga guru or BSOD or grayscreen...

@BartSilverstrim Xscreensaver doesn't yet have a javascript implementation.

@Chopper3 That Subcommitee used to be headed by Ted Steven, the guy who argued against network neutrality because the Internet is like a bunch of pipes and they'll all get full; when you send an e-mail it will have to go down the pipe like a slow moving drain and it'll take several days for your e-mail to get through. And he was dead serious about all this, completely did not understand how wrong (or in what ways) this analogy or conclusion is.

2:17 PM
well politicians everywhere are dumb on technology. We had one here on a govt. technology comittee who suggested that all spam in the world would halt overnight if british email addresses included one's post-code (like a zip code).
i never realised there was that much stupidity in the world before talking to him, never mind that all of it was in one person
the internet is a series of tubes. With Zip codes...
aren't we all glad we pay our taxes to support that

what? queen.SW1A1AA@buckinghampalace.co.uk....

queen@sw1a1aa.buckinghampalace.co.uk was his exact formula
but yes you did read me correctly... sigh

oh dear >_<
also, I thought the internet was made of cats, not tubes.

@tombull89 No, it's turtles all the way down.

@tombull89 Cats, tubes, whatever. A stationwagon full of tapes still has more bandwith than my connection.

2:22 PM
never underestimate the bandwidth of a SUV full of tapes hurtling down the freeway

would it be easier if it was just tubes, hrmmmm

Sneakernet is a method for transferring electronic information, especially computer files, by physically couriering removable media such as magnetic tape, floppy disks, compact discs, USB flash drives, or external hard drives from one computer to another. This is usually in lieu of transferring the information over a computer network. The name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to sneakers. Sneakernet, whether called that or not, is often used as an academic example to illustrate the trade-off between latency and bandwidth. Summary and background Sneakernets are in use throughout the comp...

wow so that's where that quote comes from

@tombull89 Bandwidth, no problem, it's your read time that's the killer.

always

2:27 PM
@RobertMoir saying that it would probably be quicker for me to drive home, download the file I wanted and then drive back into work as our connection is so poor

@ChrisS Interesting, thanks

oops wrong tagback, sorry
that was meant for @ChrisS

no worries.

@tombull89 I used to post a lot on B3ta (where JoelV who mad that video does most of his work)

I'm sitting here mentally debating signing up for mozy home for my home computers while working, so bandwidth is actually on my mind at the moment.

2:29 PM
@RobertMoir mozy home?

@Chopper3 I'm also on B3ta, more of a luker and commenter rather than a poster.

yeah online backup program

@tombull89 me too, only ever had one or two front-pages
ah

£5 per month unlimited data sounds good to me, as i specifically want to back up a large music collection along with documents

@Chopper3 although I did have a QoTW suggestion accepted last year

2:31 PM
I found mozy quite slow, and didn't have the features I wanted

we have a safe-deposit box not too far away, about twice a month I swap out some hard disk backups I make - feels like enough of a backup to me for my own stuff

cool chopper
any suggestions for alternatives ali?

@tombull89 Sweet, rob's not far from you

@RobertMoir not really found a good one. I used to use it for my images (approx 600gb)
moved them to a new hard drive
and mozy didn't pick up it was the same images, and started all over again

Had to fix a crashed hard disk for my brother yesterday, got me thinking about improving my home backups. recovered all 8gb of pictures that my teenage neice had taken of herself pouting into a mirror for facebook
and zero Kb of files that my brother actually needed

2:33 PM
heh

so it doesn't cope with moved files? bleh :-(

also heh, I've been there

this; bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-12249172; looks like total bullshit to me

although more of a friend, not of a niece

haha

Sam
2:34 PM
Windows home server, despite it's flaws, has been a great solution for home backups for me, makes sure the girlfriends pc is always backed up and restorable in less than an hour when she breaks it (which happens more than you would expect)

well i also recovered her itunes music collection which was worth doing - a fair amount of her money and my brother's money saved right there I think
yeah...
I do home backups myself

@RobertMoir tell me about it :|

but i'm thinking an online one would be foolproof for my brother.. i told him to do backups...

Sam
@Chopper3 I agree, sounds like modern day frenology!

The new story @chopper3-is it really saying it analyzes the language used and identifies it as an adult or not posing as a kid?
I must be misreading it.

2:35 PM
thats the nice thing about ipods though I find, I still have one of the 160gb disk-based ones, it's all the music backup I need

Backups-time machine for me.

but in either case if someone breaks into your house and nicks your computer then they will probably take the hard disk sitting next to it

@RobertMoir I am now using a Netgear Stora at home, 2 bays RAID'd, nicely mounted to all my machines

does this read wrong to anyone else: "All user data is encrypted locally with military-grade encryption prior to transfer via a 128-bit SSL connection."

I have time machine on the desk, but my laptop is with me :-)

2:36 PM
yeah i have a thecus NAS myself

@zypher: sounds like marketing overkill.

@BartSilverstrim My son writes in a very formal 'adult' style, as a reaction to all of his idiot mates and their 'l8rz' shit - so it'd pick him up a a paedo I guess

just think someone who broke into the house, say, would take that along with the machines it backed up

@BartSilverstrim me too

My stuff get .bat'd to a exteral USB and then weekly .bat'd to a server in the attic with 2x2TB disks in a mirror

2:37 PM
@RobertMoir we have a little home safe for day-to-day backups

If that can't protect me, nothing can.

i am dubious about that paedophile detector, I have to say.

@RobertMoir Reminded me of this:

I've considered having offsite drives things are encrypted to...

sounds like you've got it figured out Chopper!
that the guy who had his mac stolen and tracked it down, Zypher?

2:38 PM
yea

that was cool

actually a pretty funny talk

I'd probably have a system that establishes my kid is underage, then flag anyone that asks for naked pictures of them. That's a pretty strong indicator of something that needs to be flagged for attention.

@RobertMoir well if we (as a profession) can't do at least a 90% good job who can :)

That is such an awesome talk

2:38 PM
true enough

at the begining he said something along the lines of "I dutifully backed up to the external hard drive sitting right next to my mac ... they took that too"

@Zypher I'd like to download that to watch later, is that possible

@tombull89 it's youtube, just grab the link

yeah... time machine and similar are great, but they don't help with that scenario

blocked in work :/ I'll have to come back to the chat logs later

2:40 PM
ahh, one sec

and with the idea of buying films and music online its possible to have a hard drive with several thousands of pounds worth of stuff on it. And that's just for someone listening/viewing media... we haven't even started to consider a professional working from home yet...

no onebox here the linke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4oB28ksiIo just copypasta that out

:40667 a mate had one of those time machine things in his loft, it backs up all his macs, burglars would have to raid up there to cause him major problems

@Zypher thanks. Have Admin proxy but it's not worth the hassle

haha

2:42 PM
@Chopper3 my stuff gets backed up to the attic/loft too

I initially typed 'burger's not 'burglars' up there - I had 'Bob's Burgers' on my mind

yea ... i remember the days i had to hide the fact i completly avoided the proxy server from the security folks

heh

So what you're saying is that technology savvy people store their valuable stuff in the attic.

yup

2:43 PM
how comes some people have their rep displayed under their names, but not everybody ?

I dunno, I've seen that too

@BartSilverstrim I prefer the basement
@AliGibbs It appears when you

yeah...unless you're house burns down, in which case you've probably got more things to worry about that your music

make multi line comments
long enough

basements flood though

2:44 PM
I wanted to use the shed, but in weather like this it wouldn't work so well. That would protect from the house burning down.

ahhh

@tombull89 My firefighter people tell me to put your firebox as close to a corner of the house as possible.

@BartSilverstrim an Icelandic friend moved into his shed - his wife and family live in the house, he lives in the shed - funny people

...marital problems?

@AliGibbs You'll note the gravatar also increases in size if there are enough consecutive lines in a comment.

2:45 PM
Yep. We've got a single T1 right now. =(
I'm talking today with someone to get rolling on 18Mbps service. My home connection is 6Mbps - Anything over ~1GB is faster to drive home and download it there.

@Chopper3 I dunno, depending on his family it could be brilliant.

I've heard of being in the doghouse, so I guess this is one step up.

my home...is supposedly 2mb...but I'm lucky enough to get 400kpbs

@BartSilverstrim less now apparently :) he also worked in the first of the WTC towers to get hit, he was walking in, saw/heard it go in above him, turned around, got in a cab and spent the rest of the day walking around central park - odd guy

we have a 1Gbps link here. I like it

2:46 PM
@tombull89 wow, that's crap, live in the wilds?

not really, live with the parent's so don't get much of a choice. AOL UK for 7 years then sold to TalkTalk. Hopefully we'll be finishing with them before the summer and going to 02 or virgin
@Chopper3 it's not that far out, edge of a large-ish city (600,000+)

@tombull89 I see, I'm a consultant for BT so get mine for free, which is nice, trialing their infinity product right now actually

I was told infinity was launching near me about 4 months ago, still nothing

@Chopper3 I've seen the adverts in PC Gamer, looks good.

I'm told 'it's complex'
it's ok with one user on it right now :)

2:50 PM
probably involves a lot of roadworks :P

more cable-pulling iirc

anyone else see that set a release date for duke nukem forever?

yeah, does nothing for me

ahh i have fond memories of playing the orginal games ... while looking over my shoulder to make sure my mom didn't see the pixilated strippers

* feels old *

2:56 PM
haha ... this was almost 13 years ago ... when the last Duke nukem came out

feel even more old now - I was older than you now back then george :(

haha ... err i got nothing for that

:)

i did used to have fun reminding my last boss that he graduated high school the year i was born
actually i still have fun doing that ... i just need to remember not to do it when we are out shooting

ha

2:59 PM
That's not so nice :P

I have fun winding up my wife as she's nearly a decade older than me :)

good old duje nukem

@Chopper3 I enjoy that too and she's only 2 years older :D Great classics !
