Absolutely agree with the do not wash advice. It makes them soggy, sticky and makes proper heat treatment harder. I'd recommend avoiding mushrooms altogether if you cannot use them after a simple brush-off or wipe-down.

@Tetsujin Tip for mushroom foraging: As a newbie, stick to those which look like a sponge from below. There is only one poisonous one, and that one is easy to recognize. There is one other trap, the bitter bolete which looks very similar to the delicious penny bun, but really deserves its name (tastes disgusting, but is otherwise harmless).

Mushrooms with gills are for advanced mushroom foragers. There are some of them which are super poisonous. Like the death cap. Those who ate them say they actually taste great. But that were usually their last words.

Maybe the "don't wash" advice is regional? Because this is what the mushrooms in my fridge look like: i.sstatic.net/ZJuJO.jpg
Clearly says "wash before use"
@StianYttervik never had any problem cooking mushrooms after washing them, but the way we cook mushrooms over here is very different to how @Tetsujin and that question described. We typically steam them in a pan with water until all the water is gone, and then add oil and fry them
(though we don't use a microwave; I can find their actual video on cooking mushrooms later)
Here's a better one. For the science, rewind (I have it queued right to the cooking part) youtu.be/XLPLCmwBLBY?t=282

Found it, here's the video which changed how we cook mushrooms in this house, and it's a definite improvement: americastestkitchen.com/videos/…
