Found out today the tavern in the Whole Foods down my street does Flight Fridays. Decided to get three IPAs I never had and a rye ale, after reading that post recently about what makes a rye ale a rye ale.
An Acoustic Ales Tush session IPA, pretty mild, which makes sense as it's a "session" beer. (Learned what that meant here!) 5.0% ABV.
An Ironfire 51/50 IPA... erg. Not a fan... and I'm usually a fan of any IPA. Instead of the refreshing hoppy bitterness there's a lot of this... musty bitterness that stays in the mouth unpleasantly. I wish my tasting vocabulary were more developed to descris right.
A Ninkasi Tricerahop Double IPA. Wow! This one immediately tasted sweet. Though it might be because the 51/50 wasn't too good. I really enjoy this one. 8.8% ABV, I wouldn't have guessed. Gonna come back to this.
Finally, the Bruery Rugbrod Rye Ale. I've been curious to smell a rye ale... hm. Very faintly I do smell that scent of grain (hopefully rye and nit my mind playing tricks). When you taste it though it hits you full blast. It's weird, how this one is so faint in smell but strong in taste. Meanwhile I can practically taste the IPAs by smelling them. It is sweetish with a hint of an iron/red. Good. 8% ABV.
One more pass on the Tricerahop. Ah, so it does make a huge difference, what you last taste. This time around, the Tricerahop barely tasted sweet, probably because the rye ale was sweet. Still, it's my favorite of the four. It's hoppy and strong but with enough sweetness and other flavors that it's not at all overwhelming and just good all the way through.
