Q: Why do stouts foam so much when you pour it over ice cream?

wax eagleI was just making a stout float and noticed that my beer foamed up a ton. It's not a very carbonated beer (there was barely a hiss when I opened the growler), yet the head was several inches with not very much beer poured into the chilled mug. What causes this massive head and is there a good ...

01:58
@waxeagle That's a shame! Well, I hope you enjoy the beer regardless.

@Xander I did, cracked the growler of Stone RIS, pretty good on icecream :). Will try it straight tomorrow night
@waxeagle Good to hear! I've never actually tried a stout float. I might have to give that a shot.
@Xander definitely worth your time :)

Good evening! Well, it would be a great evening if I hadn't fallen asleep and missed buying tickets to the Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Festival, now sold out. Anyone happen to have a spare ticket or two?

10 hours later…
ooh Thin mints and Yeti, great idea
Indeed
also, peanut butter porter is now on my list
Should be an interesting one. I wonder if I can find it around here.
I saw brooklyn's Black Chocolate when I was in the shop Wednesday, almost bought some, but decided to stick to just getting fillups. Also almost grabbed a six of Yeti...
19:53
Yecch. Black Chocolate.
@RyanKinal figured it might be good with icecream :)
I wouldn't risk it, personally. Though, I still want to buy a bottle to age it for a year or so.
What did you fill up?
@RyanKinal couple of growlers. Stone's Russian Imperial and Great Divide's Old Ruffian
Mmmm. Good choices.
yeah, had some of the stone last night, gonna finish it off tonight.
19:57
I got pretty wrecked on Saturday night - Yuengling, Blue Moon, and Labatt (plus some bourbon)... thus, I haven't wanted to drink much this week.
But I'll probably get a couple at the bar tonight. We'll see what they have.
@RyanKinal I don't really ever let myself get messed up. Finishing off the growler tonight will get me pretty buzzed and that's about as far as I go.
It's not a frequent thing by any means. I'm usually pretty good about it. But I was drinking in my hotel room (no walking/driving necessary) with a few friends who I don't see often.
@RyanKinal gotcha. I've found that sitting still will cause me to get more tipsy than I realize
@waxeagle Indeed
I knew I was in trouble when I couldn't play my own song on my own guitar.
lol, you a musician?
20:05
Yeah. Not too serious, but I write some and play some
Early version of that song... recorded within a day of when I wrote it.
cool, will check out later :)
20:29
Flying Dog "Pearl Necklace" - Oyster Stout... interesting
Interesting name, for certain. I wonder if they don't get any flack over it, like some other beers recently have (Double Ds, etc)
Right?
@object88 it probably depends on how big a brewery they are and where they distribute...
@object88 That's a fairly regular theme in Flying Dog names.
So, given the stats on Area 51 regarding this site, I'm thinking it's not long for this world.
20:39
In my personal opinion, I think they focus too much on the marketing and not enough on the beer.
@RyanKinal Time will tell.
@Xander Meh. It's not the greatest stuff, but it's certainly not my least favorite.
@RyanKinal I wouldn't pay even a minute of attention to those for another month, maybe 2
@RyanKinal No, and they've got some fairly nice brews. But it's not a brand that would be at the top of my list if I was introducing someone to good beer.
we made it out of private, that should give us about 3 months before we're re-evaluated
Homebrew.SE has been sitting in public beta for quite some time, just not quiiiiite making it. I would give Beer.SE a little bit more time.
20:48
@object88 yep. Several sites have languished in beta for a long time. Homebrew, Money.SE was one of the very first betas and they are only just graduating
Boardgames.se too
@Xander Indeed
@waxeagle Fair enough

Q: How much fermentation happens post-bottling in a UFO?

jonscaIn Harpoon's UFO series (and other related products from other companies), the beer is bottled unfiltered, so some of the yeast carries over into the bottled beer. As long as the beer is kept in a cool area, as not to promote the growth of the yeast, how much fermentation will occur? Aside from...
