@kieranvyas You did a good job! Set your black borders and footer to C47-M34-Y87-K100. Maybe set the black of the small front logo to C45-M31-Y67-K100. The black you use are a bit too "thick", maybe they won't like it.
@kieranvyas Your small text on the black footer might be problematic and not print clearly. You can always add a light shade to it like C18-M0-Y18-K0 instead of pure white. It won't change the style of the design much
Hi go-meek, thanks a lot for taking the time to help me. Sorry I'm not totally sure what you mean. The black I use is too thick? And which borders are you referring too?
@kieranvyas Bleed on top could be expanded but not a big deal to leave it like this. So maybe try sending it as it is.

You should do a "create outline" on the logo just to be sure there's no font issue. Regarding the file format, if they didn't mention anything about a "normal" pdf, send again a pdf!
OK so would that be best to use the preset press quality or PDF/X1-a
@kieranvyas I mean the black borders around the dog pictures. And also the one on the footer. By too "thick", I mean the total value of all your CMYK together when added are over 300. The printer might not like it!
@kieranvyas what did you send last time as file format?
OK great, I'll change the borders. And outline the logo. Do I need to outline the text in InDesign or is it ok to embed the fonts. The last time I sent them a normal PDF
09:53
@kieranvyas It should be ok to embed the fonts, but if you're really not sure, doing a "create outline" will certainly not cause issues! Personally, I like to do a create outline when I don't know the printer well or can't approved a printed proof!
You can send a normal PDF again then.
They will send me low res PDF's back to check.
Ok that's great!
Ok great! The only thing I'm still not sure about is when you say my black is too thick. which black are you referring to?
I don't know how the pages of the booklet are but I can tell you you did a very good job on the cover
I'm refering to the black borders around the dog pictures on the back cover, the big black footer and also the black of the small logo on the front cover. Do you know what I mean?
Oh amazing that's great to know. In regards to the booklet, it is very basically text on white paper. The front cover and back cover has 1 background image that spreads over them both - then I have split the pages so I can put the back cover last in the arrangement. This has cut the background image in two, I assume this will be fine?
09:57
The new black recipe I suggested you for the footer and the borders is simply the green color of your background + 100% black!
And yes I know what you mean. That clears it up for me very well thank you so much!
ok I see.

So... for the inside black text, you can simply use a black at 100% without anything for the other CMY values
For the covers with the images you cut in half, do you mean the covers are also printed on both sides?
What I mean is: The file you uploaded is the "front side" of the cover. Is there something printed on the back of these 2 pages?
Or are they white?
It is 1 image over a 2 page spread for pages 12 -1 (front cover & back cover). But because I need to prepare the booklet in single pages in consecutive order, I have split up the front and back cover and moved the back cover to the last page of the booklet
Oh no sorry I am referring to the booklet!
the front and back cover for the booklet is prepared over a 2 page spread, then cut in half so that it can be arranged sequentially
Ok I see! Well, that's alright. Just make sure you added bleed to these pages on all 4 sides.
Yes I have, 3mm
Is that enough?
(crop marks then offset 3mm)
10:04
I see where I might have confused you, the image you posted is a DVD case... not the booklet cover ;)
3mm should be alright
Yes! sorry my mistake!
I think you've pretty much cleared up the DVD case for me, I have a much better understanding now
Great that's brilliant. Thank you so much for helping out a newbie!
You did a very good file for a beginner, as you said you were!
That's pro work! It's better than what a lot of experienced designers do haha
Thank you! The original PDF I sent them was prepared ENTIRELY in photoshop - so a few days ago I really had no clue lol
Yeah it's a lot of work to convert this to Indesign or Illustrator, but now you know how!
Since you'll receive an online proof for your project, you'll have the opportunity to review your work. And the printer will certainly tell you if you need to update something. They had very precise requirements.
Now I know! Thanks again, wouldn't have known a thing without the community at stack exchange.
10:09
You applied well what you've learnt here, that's for use.
Now in exchange for my services, I want a DVD copie (haha I'm kidding!)
Hahaa! Right, I better get back to the day job. Have a good day
Good luck with the project!

hey all
hi

whazzup? :)
my boss and his wife were proofing the website before it goes live. Instead of giving me their corrections he went in and changed everything himself :(
lolwut!?
that is rather rude
Well I made everything on separated out php includes to prepare for this. Got to back up my version and download his to see what, if anything, he broke
There's mostly just some very basic markup on the content pages so hopefully its okay. Just need to re-edit some of the verbiage they did that sounds terrible (he's aware that I'm going to re-edit it)
le sigh. superiors / customers who think they know what they are doing are... annoying
Anyhow, how are you?
15:25
quite ok. pretty busy :)
some nice projects ahead and some nice invoices in the recent past :)

So I've never designed a User Interface in Photoshop... but I can't even imagine using so many layers.
@Vincent @ZachSaucier is it safe to assume this person is doing something seriously wrong?

Q: Photoshop - Too Many Layers

MayoTL;DR - How does one create a complex User Interface in Photoshop in a way that Photoshop doesn't slow down to a crawl? I create a lot of complex User Interface scenarios with Photoshop and routinely get to 10-20 layer comps and hundreds (thousands) of layers. I use smart objects as much as p...

@Ryan yes.
tens, okay. A hundred? Maybe. Thousands? Never.
all I can think is they're making multiple versions all in one psd. Oh don't like that, let me turn off that group so its not visible. Its the only thing I can possibly imagine
yeah, or micro-micromanaging every tickbox and radio button

Guy walks into a bar, "Hey Bartender, you think its alright to use hand-drawn elements in a tech piece." The Bartender, replies, "can't help its a matter of opinion" SIGH
Trying to ask non-technical design questions seems to be an act in futility
Hehe I was about to ask an opinion question myself :3
I think it holds a mirror up to the design industry in general. Big business trying to make it a science to further their marketing goals
I think its misconception of design within the media
Oh you're a designer? Must be apps and websites
Oh? And did that box of cereal design itself? How about the menu in that restaurant? That corporate letterhead? The coupons you got from Target?

But those aren't sleek, modern and sexy. Nobody shows those designers in sitcoms and commercials. They show some tech entrepreneur looking guy working in a cafe on his iPad and iPhone as though that's how the majority of society works
hehe yeah, it's terrible. At the same time, I hate when you're dealing with a client and they just won't take your advice seriously.. Then paradoxically I have to resort to psychology research or some nonsense and overstate it...I dunno...it's a cruel world

11th to 16th. 11th will be little to nothing to do. 12th too really unless things go horribly wrong
@Ryan why would they go horribly wrong?
ha so after removing a lot of domains I get a call from godaddy about how "concerned" they are, lol
@Darth_Vader It shouldn't unless they lose our crate or something of that nature
did they furrow their brows wildly?
20:06
we can go work out at the Y, lol
lol maybe. How far from Music City Center are you?
@Ryan do u y, lol
@Ryan depends on traffic
Too expensive. My training partner and I just signed up for a similar gym with better rates though. Going to keep training two days a week in his garage and 2 or 3 days at the commercial gym
I have a discounted plan was the only reason I went with them
Now to see if I can get into Toys R Us' corporate headquarters, not likely but have to try
20:10
