@CiurkitboyN yes! 4 days!

3:44 AM
And 7 days more for my Fanatic badge!

6 hours later…
10:04 AM
@Vikas you are actually, consciously going for that one? Fanatic. :)
@joojaa Spec work in dev, and that much? That sux.

Means? Actually I was never going for it until I came to know about it at the score of 87 days. So it was pure luck. Now I have to be very careful. Only thing that can stop me is when internet stops working.

On a separate note, Fanatic is my nick name in games.

I have no right to laugh at you, at some point I did the same ;)

😁

10:28 AM
Gamification works
At least, for me

?
I just googled "which is most dry state in India" and it showing me each result about alcohol 🤔 thoughts?
i wanted to search where it rains less.

11:07 AM
try searching for 'lowest precipitation'

@Vincent works
I had similar experience when once I searched brown sugar
my father told me it's illegal stuff, I kept arguing it's better than white sugar

I don't follow

11:23 AM
@Vincent there is quite a lot of uninteresting coding stuff around like inventory management, laboratory and hospital systems, taxi dispatches etc. A lot of that code just has to get done and get talking to other systems. These kind of interfaces are just big need lot of work but have next to no creativity involved. In fact spec work is the only way you can bid. You draft a specification and fulfilling that specification is what pays you money.

...and here I thought I had seen the ugliest parts of capitalism's underbelly.

@joojaa How did we get from brown sugar to there?

@Vincent lol you wish. For me the biggest problem as a developper was that i had no way of knowing who, what or where my customers were

@Wrzlprmft joojaa replied to an earlier question of mine about his statement that 14 out of 15 devs do regular spec work

@Vincent I thought you know. 'Brown sugar' is a nick name for some drugs. Also, brown sugar is a variant of white sugar we eat.

11:30 AM
I do know the second thing, because I switched to brown sugar myself. I didn't know about the slang for drugs

@Wrzlprmft don't take joojaa's 'link' to message seriously. it could be a reply to any of previous messages 😛
@Vincent I also didn't know. It's very less common, but exists
it's slightly mentioned in this article en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroin
if you search 'brown sugar'

substances are not my area of expertise. In spite of me having as Masters in Chemistry

not my expertise too.
I just know it by luck
is there any tool in Photoshop with which you can quickly pick key shades from a grey image?
like darkest, grey, light grey, white

12:15 PM
The levels adjustment layer?

@Vincent I mean creating a color palette, automatically.
I don't have to pick colors manually

Isn't that a tool in InDesign?

I don't know Id

in the same group as the inkdropper

even an adobe app iirc
there are many online tools btw

12:41 PM
@Vikas kuler does that... I think it's integrated in the software under a different name now, not sure
color.adobe.com
Someone figured out it's not that kewl to mispel words :)

@curious colour? :P

@Vincent Haha also
colo(u)r
hey joojaa
@Vincent We're about a month from going back to class. Our government said we would be in-person if 75% of the student population have both doses. We're at about 33%.
Very tired of not knowing which way to prep :|

govt be as govt does :[
I was extremely lucky: the building that I'd be planned in for in-person is going to be remodeled, so I will be online 100% sure

ours was remodeled just before the lockdown so no luck for me haha
I didn't step in that building in a long time, I'm going to look super lost :)

I'll be so confused teaching live again. I'm planned for a few courses starting in september.
we are just under 50% atm
what makes things go so slow over there? distance? weather?

12:56 PM
@Vincent Colleague just sent me this, think you might like: peoplesgdarchive.org
@Vincent unions? :|
lol

@curious unions have a say in vaccination?
I'm the first to blame unions for slowing things down, but... vaccination?

@Vincent no no I mean the fact that nothing is moving during the summer and there doesn't seem to be a plan

I get that. But also, 33% fully vaxxed is pretty below average for highly developed countries

yep
also that I think we're one of the top most vaccinated countries
they made a lottery for vaccinated people recently - even did some vaccination during the latest hockey games to try to get as many people as possible

getting desperate

1:04 PM
@curious how does it help with new students that come from abroad

@joojaa In college here we don't really get that...our system is a bit different: high school > college > university
but even in university, I don't recall us having a ton of foreign students, maybe because the uni is francophone, not sure
there are a lot of good design universities in Europe so maybe it's not as popular to come to Canada to study design

@curious about 50% of my students are from abroad

ok yea, totally different ball game here

@curious but we are a bit nore ranked

I'm pretty sure there would be a ratio also because the design program always fills up with local students, a lot of people get turned down
all programs included, the uni I'm thinking about has 39000 students among which 4500 are from abroad

1:12 PM
@curious it depends if its a bachelors or masters program. Most bachelors are finnish only. Its just that I work in mechatonics and i get students from departments that have high number of english speakers. But also because i am a bit more versatile than most other worshop personell and my english is pretty good. So i tend to be atteactive for those that need to compensate for lack of some skill

the anglophone uni is also a similar ratio
@joojaa yes definitely more students from abroad in grad school. I'm not even sure we have a grad program for graphic design at our local uni... I know they've been working on it for a long time

@curious we are a bit smaller we only have about 18000 students

@joojaa If I properly recall the institution name, you're also sort of specialized, right?

Of which maybe 10-15% but the engineering shools have far less english students.

I looked it up and we still don't have a graphic design MA. The latest prof they hired edits a francophone design journal so hopefully that's a first step towards building some more design research here

1:18 PM
@curious well we have several technical shools (for a MSc. Eng degree) a art school which includes architecture and school of economics
@curious a
Nearly all of our students are on a combined bachelor masters track. I mean the engineering schools used to be such that they didnt ewen award a bachelors.
@curious so your school is more like our universities of applied science

@curious yeah this. they have an android app called Adobe Capture.

@joojaa well "my" school - I've got a few, the ones I'm an alumni from, the one where I study, the one where I teach :) haha
but the one I'm talking about where they're trying to create a MA has all sorts of programs from administration to languages to arts, etc.
dance, native studies, museology, etc.

1:45 PM
@curious well we have anything from quantum physics to motion picture directing (which is EXPENSIVE as hell, you can train a fighter pilot with same kind of money)
But beyond the shool of arts most of our studies are not humanities. We are a bit more focused on making thigs. So no dance majors no language majors (but you can study languages)

2:14 PM
@joojaa Can I do quantum motion pictures?

2:35 PM
@Vikas what's fanatic badge for?
I'm gonna guess from context that it is for going on the site on consecutive days

@CiurkitboyN You have to become an addict for 100 days to GDSE

oh cool

Right @Wolff?

so you have enthusiasm?

2:40 PM
And I'm 3 questions away for a badge that has never been awarded to anyone here before 😎

cool
I don't think I have any badges on gdse

@CiurkitboyN I have Enthusiast badge

ok
thats what I meant

@Vikas Right what?

My definition:
2 mins ago, by Vikas
@CiurkitboyN You have to become an addict for 100 days to GDSE

2:42 PM
@CiurkitboyN It's easy to find out: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/users/165887/…

My daily mix on Spotify is incredibly stupid lol
"What does the cat say"

@CiurkitboyN "Mrrrro-kay?"

@CiurkitboyN you have 15 bronze

15 bronze what?

Medals
in Tokyo Olympics
@Wolff xbox/ps4 don't have RTX cards so how can they play high quality games?
Jun 7 at 16:44, by CiurkitboyN
nevermind

2:57 PM
@Vikas PS4 is 8 years old

PS5?
i mean the latest

@Vikas I don't know much about it. Have you compared the specs?

@Wolff no. i just came to know Microsoft Flight Simulator will be available to xbox
Which is very rich in graphics

Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0 ^

I won't be surprized if you like it more than the latest.

3:03 PM
@Vikas Most 3D games can have different quality settings. So just the fact that a system can "run" a game doesn't really say much.

BTW, is this simulator actually for people who want to become pilot or do flying related jobs? Or normal people like us can also play? (of course we can play but I mean if it's meant for us or not)

@Vikas I played version 3.0 as a kid. From 1988.

i really want to play latest one but my laptop sucks
it will crash before the flight crashes

@Vikas I guess it's meant for people who are really interested in flying and want to get closer to it. Some of them might become pilots. A classmate from elementary school played games like this and ended up flying commercial jet planes.

@Wolff that's what i feel, because controls are realistic and complicated

3:07 PM
@Vikas I know the feeling.

Q: Can I get Socratic badge after asking 3 more questions on GDSE?

VikasAccording to definition of Socratic badge: Ask a well-received question on 100 separate days, and maintain a positive question record I've discussed it before and I came to know that I might get it after asking 3 more questions. But I don't want people laugh at me if I don't get it. So I want t...

@Vikas But I also played a little and never got any closer to piloting. I didn't understand half of what was going on.

@Wolff yeah realistic controls, so lot more controls

@Vikas, at the moment I'm playing KeeperRL. Do you know that?

i'll check

3:17 PM
nevermind

🙄😕
@Wolff I haven't checked yet. Was eating. But let me first guess: It's a 2D game with low graphics and some strategy involved?

@Vikas "just"!?

nevermind
@Wolff Ok. Updated my comment.
I'll check now

@Vikas Now the answer is "yes". But it's only strategy - not action.

@Wolff LOL. I just checked, and it's actually what I had pictured (the looks and feel) in my mind 🤣
As a kid in school I used to play this game, because it was the only game in computer lab, apart from Roadrash

3:30 PM
@Vikas I know that game! But the gameplay is nothing like KeeperRL. (and the graphics aren't either really imo). Check out some videos.

I'll check video, but do you really think it will make me play that game?
Did watching CSGO made you play it? 🤣

@Vikas That's a depressing way to see life. You mean people never try new things?

@Wolff No I was commenting about you and csgo 😜
I watched 2 minutes video, didn't like much.
It looks like a design software interface

@Vikas Yes!? What's not to like?

@Wolff Perhaps I said before, I like realistic games, usually.
So the look and feel is way different than my taste

3:40 PM
@Vikas "Realistic" triangles with shadows ... It's all in the mind

nevermind

@Vikas I understand what you mean. It's just that "realistic" games tend to quickly look old and outdated. Simple games like the board game chess or Super Mario never looks dated.

@Wolff Super Mario never looks dated because maybe you grown up with it 🙃

@Vikas Not just that. It's stylized.

I like Super Mario more than KeeperRL because I had some experience playing it. So I have some tiny memories. So . . .

3:46 PM
But 3D games always end up looking dated.

on the other hand I never played KeeperRL
so less chances for liking it
@Wolff that's true. but I guess 2D games can also look dated if they keep making newer versions.

When I played a game like Alone in the Dark back in 1993, I couldn't imagine how a game could ever look more realistic.

graphics sucks in old 3d games

Or a game like LHX Attack Chopper from 1990.
This was perfection in my eyes back then.
@Vikas But you will see modern games the same way in 20 years.
That's my theory anyway.

@Wolff Yeah I didn't disagree to this.
Remember once I said World War movies can never get old?
2D games is just like that 😜

3:51 PM
@Vikas Ha, I was just thinking about that.

@Wolff My theory is: Once you play some game which is actually good, you'd end up liking it. For example I really liked a game Space Impact in old Nokia phones. It was just 2D but was a really good experience.
So I can't like most of 2D games like that because I don't know them and I haven't played them and won't know them because I haven't play them
@Wolff sometimes client asks a completely new task and designers rush to GDSE 😂

4:14 PM
Any significant difference in work performance/saving time when you work on bigger screen than laptop?

@Vikas Yes. I haven't seen that kind of packaging.

@Wolff No? Isn't it just a CD packaging?

@Vikas Not like they look here.

well

@Vikas We have these. Don't you?

4:20 PM
@Wolff let me check again that question image, i just had a glance

Or just the sleeve without a box. Or all sorts of custom solutions to stand out. Not sure they all have names.

@Wolff yes, more or less
So is that user's different? Non transparent?
and opening like a box?

@Vikas Yes, it's an ordinary cardboard sleeve and an ordinary booklet inside a box. And it's unclear if it's a cardboard or plastic box. I would think cardboard was more luxurious.

5:17 PM
I was wrong 😢 I need 58 more good questions

Greetings fellow humans
In my opinion all the games you have mentioned are dated
@Wolff Minecraft in my opinion will never get old I mean its been trending for like 10 years
soooo

8:10 PM
@CiurkitboyN I mentioned some games for different reasons, so I'm not quite sure what you mean.

never mind
