@BESW I dont think that really applies to all programs. Nontoy problems can not be expected to be understood by looking at the screen

7:27 AM
So if we take the user interface below. Is it a joke? Not really. Does it need explaining? Well yes you eed about 2-3 years of UNI physics and Math to appreciate it
@BESW So maybe explain is contextual. Explain to whoom?

Well, yes. Jokes need context too.

Sure i was just pointing out that there are many user interfaces that are brilliant at what they do but alas needs explaining since the entire idea behind the thing si so obscure that it can not be made understancaple

Aye. And of course no principle can be reduced to a pithy phrase without losing some of its nuance.

anyway there is a counter example of selfexplaining things being useful
Above is the photoshop buket tool. Everybody who uses it uses it because its intuitive and does what you want
It is not until later that you realize that it is the wrong tool for nearly every job you could imagine using it for.

3 hours later…
10:44 AM
hello comrades

1 hour later…
11:50 AM
Anybody using affinity designer?
@johnp hi

ello @joojaa
i have it installed but im gunna wait a while longer till it matures a bit. The developers are working at a very fast pace. I check their release forum everyday
you may need to register to see that
I'm waiting for some sort of stroke width tool to be implemented. I think there's a workaround now but I like it for lineart illustration in Illustrator CC

@johnp im just thinking of switching. The new CC does no longer serve my purpose
So i have decided to migrate and not look back

really? i eventually plan to do the same but if I were you I'd try out the beta first as there are some bugs that may hinder you in a production environment...
The one i have is kinda old but I know there were a few issues with pdfs recently, not sure if they were solved
I imagine they'll probably be stabilizing soon as they have Affinity Photo due for beta on windows before the end of the year, hopefully

@joojaa tried it, not good for my purposes

12:05 PM
Hey @PieBie What do you use it for mainly?

@johnp i have no production so that is not a problem

I think Inkscape+Affinity Designer should work well together if you really want to move

@johnp we get a lot of files from outside designers, I then make it into HTML/CSS/JS animations. So mostly I extract assets from files (psd, ai, c4d)
but affinity just doesn't cut it opening the psd files we get

Affinity will fill the gaps with type features that Inkscape doesn't have. Ah I see, I imagine the ai and psd support is still being worked on. I can see Adobe doing a very Apple-esque lockup on their code

no support for smart objects for example

12:53 PM
@joojaa I just posted Affinity Photo in a comment towards Raf. I own a copy of that. Affinity Designer I only did the beta on but never bought
@PieBie while I can't figure out what that edit even meant as far as "New File from Clipboard" but best I can tell it involves mouse movement which is still slower than keyboard strokes

@johnp adobe has been doing lockup of code since cc came to fruition. Expect PDF reading be severely hampered in illustrators future.

@Ryan true. he was technically not incorrect, so I approved it. But feel free to change it back if you want.

I already did :) but how was that answer even correct. It stopped at "New image from Clipboard" which unless there's a feature Ive been missing all these years only creates an empty document
@joojaa I wonder if you know this one - photo.stackexchange.com
woops

Q: What is the pre-computer version of Photoshop's blending modes?

Edward Van CrowleyBefore computers, to blend two pictures into one, I'd imagine they'd have used some sort of mirror setup to reflect the one picture onto a mirror containing the reflection of the other picture. Does that sound right? What about different blending modes that Photoshop has, like "Difference," "Pin...

@Ryan at least multiply and overlay have such roots.

looks like Scott has rejoined
rejoined? reengaged? think reengaged is more accurate

1:01 PM
it was bound to happen

1:20 PM
@JohnB morning buddy

hiya

I talked to Vincent briefly yesterday, he sounds good

good to hear!

1:40 PM
greetings

@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ hola

hows it going lift-a-lot?

oh hey typing that sees @DA. was in chat lately. Heya Da, long time

@joojaa lol, what do you mean?
confused isnt banned, he's been good

yes i know but hes been away for a while also

1:44 PM
he was away for awhile because he was banned for a year

Yes but they had different length of ban dates an yet they are back at the more or less same day.

didnt notice, maybe its a conspiracy.

Scott hasn't been banned for a very long time.

ya he isnt banned
later guys must go play in SO's chatroom to learn more about JSON

Jason who?
are you cheating on us!? :'(

1:54 PM
yes, need to learn how to take JSON -> SQL
but still trying to understand the security around JSON

3:11 PM
yeah @joojaa and I can see them restricting Typekit fonts to the Adobe apps completely, if they haven't already

Typekit is awful

it's better than it was...they've had some new additions
from Emigre and others

I will never use Typekit again because they've also removed fonts

I guess they could have a few more Sans options
oh removed from the database or something else?
I have the frownies today ¬_¬ The farm always meddles in my plans

I dont recall the font or the collateral to check but I'm nearly positive a font I had used in something by way of Typekit has been completely removed from their system
it may have been our previous catalog, one second and Ill check

3:17 PM
oh you could be right actually, I vaguely remember looking for something only to find it was no longer in use or restricted to web only
maybe some foundries be gettin' notions

nope that wasn't it so not sure what piece it was but that pissed me off and Ill never use it again
right now I'm really liking the font Vollkorn via Google Fonts. Using it for some new collateral

oh it has a very wholesome Bran flakes feel to it lol
cerealy bready...

I like Vollkorn too, I used it for a while but I hate "lowercase" numbers

gotta run, chat in a bit

3:33 PM
Adobe will probably go only typekit fonts at a point only to have a uproar and revert it back 1 month later.

Adobe will never go only Typekit

Adobe exemplifies how a business organization can pervert even the best of us.

Adobe used to sell wonderful CDs of fonts and even then didn't limit anyone to those.

@Ryan yes i had the folio at work

yep I had Folio 11 at my last office

3:36 PM
then the newer folio didnt have Akzidenz-Grotesk which really pissed me off
any good google sans-serif font?

eh if I use Sans-Serif its generally Source Sans Pro because of the vast number of weights available
I also like Kano but it only offers one weight so have to use other means if I need more hierarchy

Oh well

4:04 PM
that Foundation kit deal i got on fonts.com was amazing
no web licenses but that doesnt bother me really

I just want my macro tubes to arrive. Should be any day now so I can give that projector lens another go
Its really quite incredible

I guess the next font I'll buy will probably be Arnhem or Whitman....or possibly Scala or Quadratt. I'd like a decent body typeface
did you get a fancy one this time?
I thought you got some already

I ordered on Amazon already but it hasn't arrived yet
says itll arrive any time between today and Friday
I don't think people realize on that shot how incredible it is
From front to back is probably less than 3 inches. I moved them closer together to get that shot

4:22 PM
looks cool
too much sharpen?

I don't think so
Those are the only photos I've taken with it so far, entirely detached from camera body

That is very cool. Looks much better than the quick shots you showed me when u got it
So will you be using it for macro or portraits?

Not really sure until I see how it works with the tubes

aye

I might try a video with it, cause why not
I haven't even tried video with the Sony A7

4:30 PM
I'm still waiting on parcels to be delivered...they're being slow ¬_¬ my V for Vendetta novel arrived today though
i wonder what streetlight bokeh would look like with it....or if it would be too blurred out
streetlights through a rainy window would be a nice test vid

If I can control it well enough I'd like to just focus on one pez dispenser then shift the focus to another one so people understand how close together and narrow the depth of field is
but without a bellows I'm not sure Ill be able to

last i checked the 1.2 bokeh one is selling at 100...but if it's that blurred out with the 1.6 i have no idea what to expect lol. prob just get batman's ear
im guessing the distance from the sensor will change the d.o.f dramatically? my lens-fu isn't what it used to be

should considering people have said they can get infinity focus with it. If I can get infinity focus on a 17mm Ultrawide I'll be happy as can be
there seems to be a whole world of people modding projector lenses for mirrorless cameras

I still feel dirty having a cropped sensor dslr ;(
hello @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ

4:36 PM
Brumm

@johnp just say "f it" as it's F its day

lol thought about selling it but myeah I dunno. Hopefully I'll save money when my friends leave the country ;( not like I'll have a social life
dunno whether to get a proper camera or just an easy glorified hybrid thing

I guess I'm out of the loop, Canon announced new dSLRs?

there's a big show right now in the photo world @JohnB a lot of announcements are being made

I am too @JohnB Looking at the new sonys but they're almost as expensive as a low entry medium format cam

4:43 PM
aha

nikon registered what may be their first mirrorless camera
hard to know if it'll be a full cmos sensor though

checking out the 5D Mark IV now, though they also have the 7D Mark II listed as 'new' on their website so they have quite a elastic definition of 'new' I guess

Biggest announcement I saw from Nikon is competing with 360 cameras and gopros
Fuji announced a Medium Format digital
and Sony announced a new mirrored DSLR

what is a mirrored DSLR?

they are smaller as they dont have a mirror mechanism to look through the actual lens
oh sorry, thats a mirrorless

4:46 PM
a DSLR really, most have mirrors in them which is why they're Single Reflex
but these days Sony is known for mirrorless which is why I used the extra verbage

If they announce something in the 7D price range that records 4K video then I'd seriously consider buying it

maybe you could design a digital camera back for film camera bodies @joojaa with your evil electronic wizardry

But i have no such bodies and getting those chips is a bit of nightmare

there was one up on indiegogo which was receiving funding but mysteriously stopped accepting backers...

but then i have a electronics lab at my disposal

4:49 PM
what if I throw a wad of cash at your head?
Lol did that come across aggressive? I meant it in jest, obviously! ^^
sorry @joojaa

:)

if I were to buy another camera right now it would be some sort of medium format film camera until the Sony A7Rii drops in price
or I get wealthier

yeah I feel very much the same... realistically it would be mainly for illustration research anyway so I dunno how important a camera would really be for me. I just like how medium format field of view is closer to the human eye
and the depth of field also

I just think it would be fun but I'm not buying one any time soon. Too much other things
I'm happy with my current camera

@joojaa another thing I would throw money at you for would be to make a scanner like this hasselblad.com/scanners/flextight-x5
I may have mentioned it to you before...how difficult would it be to construct something like that

5:04 PM
@johnp did you buy that Kyle Webster pack? Think that was you

yeah i did
it's good, wish i had time to use it though

According to CreativeBloq he just updated it. I might buy it tonight. Not sure how much Ill use it though

after i finish my anatomy study i'll probably do an illustration with it
i got an email saying he launched rake brushes

I haven't had a chance to do much more water color practice either being away last week
so much to do so little free time

life is cruel

5:07 PM
er scratch that plenty of free time, so much to do so hard to prioritize it all and sleep

the farm is meddling in my affairs and evil plans ¬_¬

You buy the Mega Pack? Did it include the Impasto?

yeah got the mega pack, and the watercolour pack...
ill check now

I dont think it does, found a list of contents in his FAQ
I tried to do the Reddit Coloring Challenge for this week, got so frustrated and gave up. think it was a really hard image for a first shot at something like that

just went through them all, that pack is huge! i personally prefer a smaller selection of high quality brushes
but no impasto unfortunately
there are a few watercolour brushes in the megapack if you're interested

5:29 PM
I don't know if I'll get it or not, the majority of the time I use CubeBrush Basic 3 for everything

ive decided that once my materials are bought I'm not allowed buy more until I produce some illustrations lol

er woops Ctrl+Paint Basic 3 rather

almost have my little studio collection together

I need to try and come up with another short tutorial and a better long tutorial to do this week. For the long one I might do an intro to pen tool in Photoshop even though its not my specialty

by studio i mean that horrible box room ill be using ¬_¬ thinking of taking out the bed and getting a hammock for space

5:35 PM
Did you take that job at the print shop you were looking at?

have to call him either this evening or tomorrow...kinda scared to call him lol
printers are very stressed people
hope he takes me on...he already hired a head designer recently

What you just said is the key to making it in the field so you'll be alright
The truth is quality isn't most important, maybe not even top 3. Making it in a career is all about making others lives easier. If you can make the head of the print shop's life less stressful than you're valuable
show up on time, meet deadlines, let him know you're reliable and can take some of the workload off of him and you're golden

yeah, hopefully it'll work out

6:22 PM
can't beat the price if you can win it

damnit ;( dont have the cash this week
cleared my student debt so i dont have that lovely blanket of indulgence anymore!

Im watching this ebay.com/itm/…
if it stays at that price ill buy it for the $30

i think there is some difference between that model and the II version that put me off before...i think it has a high max shutter speed or something
haha cute gizmo, i love small rangefinders

ive been watching the yashica electro gsn but it's still about 100 at least for a mint version...it's the "spiderman" camera from the movies

6:27 PM
He put it on a Sony A7 and takes amazing photos with it. Bit more complicated to do but I'll give it a shot while I see it available
I had looked for it before and none were up
and I could shoot a roll or two on it before taking it apart

lol that accent makes me melt
i must look at that guys other videos

he gave me a follow back and commented on Instagram after I posted one of the initial shots from the projector lens and tagged him in it

but myeah if ur looking at the yashica get the gsn or gtn for 1000 shutter s. and hotshoe. ah nice. you're getting a lot out of instagram lol. maybe i should join, though i dunno if it's as good for illustrators? ive seen a few on it though
i dont even have a smartphone

I think its good but it does take work.

yeah he makes it look easy!
i do admire a little diy proj like that though

6:35 PM
I meant Instagram is good but takes work

15 mins Ryan! whatchagunnado!?

not care
lol

lol. i would have considered it had i lodged money today
supposedly the yashicas were everywhere back in the day, whether that was a good thing or not, i dunno. they're supposed to be solid

I wouldn't spend $100 for any 35mm film camera except a good condition Nikon F2

yeah...i dunno i have a thing about used tech products, i like them mint
as for books i dont care but anything else im fussy

6:38 PM
but look there it is for $35

hmm yeah...wondering why it's max is 1/500 though. that model should be 1/1000
according to rockwell's blog he doesn't trust any seller that's like 99.7% or less. I know ur link is 100, just saying

keep in mind you can always resell these things. Its not like the value of a 40 year old camera is going to drop after you use it for a year
as long as you don't overpay you should break even on average

mm maybe. I'm a magpie though, not that inclined to sell things
though I should, with all the books I go through. After shipping there wouldnt be much money back

I'm thinking more and more about selling off my kit lens. Its the only AF lens I have so I'm inclined to keep it but I just never use it

what is it?
sony?

6:45 PM
yeah

my AF on my kit lens screwed up so i use my 35mm anymore
it is a 50mm equivalent on a crop sensor anyway

Looks like I could get about $150 for it

1 hour later…
8:00 PM
@Ryan is it possible to create a mask based on moved pixels in Liquify? I want to fix proportions of a drawing without screwing up the texture...
probably could do a frequency separation but graphite is awkward

uh maybe, I think I have a solution in my head that would work

cool, well ill try something first and see
gunna do a side view sketch before scanning

I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to achieve but does changing the layer mode to Difference and then using that outcome as the mask work for you?

i'll have to scan before i can test, ive never tried that before though

8:06 PM
just a common problem ive had in the past where say the proportions of a head might be a little off so i'd need to either warp the contours a bit or redraw it altogether, if you get me
ooh that would be cool, if i can do that i could fill it with a paper grain
