@Xnero If you need more explanation about my answer to question 8 let me know.

@pacmaninbw I've posted a suggestion in the bug report thread that hopefully helps identifying the issue with this. If you had to go under 1000, perhaps that warrants a new report.

@pacmaninbw Good answer but I do have a small follow up question. Why do you see the need to delete/edit previous content if at the time the content was written you followed the relevant policies at that time e.g. the gender policy?

@Xnero isn't that self-evident?

user435118
@Vogel612 Not sure what you mean...

let me ... rephrase that using a very crass example:

@Xnero A gender policy didn't exist before 2018. So to be inline with something which now exists but didn't back then may require some edits.

It was bad that women didn't have the right to vote, even back when that was the way the rules were.

@Peilonrayz But if non-diamond users can't edit such content and have to live with it, what difference does it make for a diamond user? Why are they given such a right when there is no real need to edit previous content?

societies evolve, standards change. Past interactions shouldn't be judged by the standards of the past, but the standards of the present
there is one exception: the judicial system must only be allowed to apply laws as they were given at the time of the behaviour
otherwise one could just make something illegal and punish people for doing it before it was illegal

user435118
@Vogel612 So I assume that in your spare time you go through and edit all the non-gender neutral comments on the site where the OP didn't specify a gender?

no, but if someone flags it, I just might be inclined to edit the comment (or more likely delete it because it's old and obsolete by now)
also the policy doesn't mandate the use of they, it just encourages it for cases where the gender of the recipient is unclear

@Xnero A non-diamond user can delete and edit their own content. Times change, YouTubers delete old content because of the chance of being cancelled for culturally acceptable actions at the time which no-longer are.

user435118
@Vogel612 Ok, I have every right to ask a question and I look forward to the nominee's answer.

user435118

@Peilonrayz That is not true, comments can't be edited after the grace period is over by non-diamond users.

@Xnero comments are ephemeral anyways ;)

user435118
@Vogel612 True.

@Peilonrayz I prefer to believe that most youtubers only delete their old content because they know better rather than out of fear.
fear is not a healty motivator

@Vogel612 I'm sure some do. However deleting all videos over X years old sounds more like fear than knowing better.

I'm not following a lot of youtubers, and those that I do follow have not (to my knowledge) deleted any videos.

@Peilonrayz Sorry s/YouTubers/some YouTubers/

@Xnero @Mast My more recent answers on code review include a General Observations section where I make a strong effort to point out any good things the OP's code has before providing a detailed list of problems in the code. I might have to revisit all my answers from 2015 through 2016 to add good items to the review.

@pacmaninbw Feel free to do so, but don't feel obligated.

My early answers mentioned your code or you which could possibly be taken as an attack on the OP, all of my more recent answers only talk about the code, and don't say you or your.

And that's great.

To be honest, it will take a major effort to review all of my answers (344) and comments (I have no clue how many) to find anything with gender neutral issues.

Do you know Kilisi? He became a moderator not too long ago. His tone is blunt, but honest. Refreshing even. Do you think he's going to edit all his previous posts? No.
And we knew up front, because I asked him about it.
If you want to make an effort, that's commendable. Absolutely.
But I don't think it's an obligation and/or required.
@Vogel612 I strongly agree with this.

12:59 PM
@Mast I was just being honest in the original answer to question 8, there are things I would do differently now.

There are things I'd do differently now too.
5 years ago I didn't think the world would look like it does now. Was that stupid, ignorant or unaware? I don't know. But the world changed and my behaviour with it.

> "We need not destroy the past. It is gone." - John Cage

@Mast My age gives me a different perspective than many people on CR or even SE. I had be nice training in multiple jobs.
5 or 6 years ago I also had some Anger Management training from the psychologist I was seeing at the time (20 years of counseling).

I've had communication trainings, but never one specialized in 'be nice'.

You probably weren't being a hardass to junior engineers and sales reps that came to you for help.

No.
I used to have an authority problem, but that had nothing to do with being nice and everything with being young.

1:08 PM
@Mast That is the important thing - but it's also good to be cognizant of those who may have been hurt by the past. When we are the ones causing the hurt, we can not simply say that the past is gone. Its impact can linger for centuries, depending on the actions - though most fade relatively quickly. What we need to be cautious about is refusing to apologise for our past selves.

Yeah, I wanted to be a manager when I was young, for the authority. Now I would prefer to just be an individual practitioner. I view being a moderator as being a large responsibility and not as someone that has any authority.

I will absolutely apologize to everyone asking for one. I've said some truly stupid things in the past. Not many of that on the SE network, I hope, but still.

Because I said so is not a good reason for someone to do something or change their habits.

I've never hidden any of the mistakes I made, I think. There's a very public (and quite old) one quite visible on meta.CR.

Cool. I intentionally avoided saying "you" because I don't want to feel like I'm accusing people of anything. I've done not nice things in the past and it's easy to say "I'm not like that any more" while forgetting to acknowledge the hurt and apologise. :)

1:11 PM
@Catija very true.

I'm sure there was a lot more to what Mr. Cage said but I wanted to push back a bit on the concept of the past being gone. We can't change the past, for certain, but the impact of the past often times isn't really "gone".

@Catija I'm sorry, that quote is from Mortal Kombat.
Is caricature a word in English?
It was intended as such.

Ah. :) A pop culture reference. I did google it and it was indeed said by a real person - a composer. Unless the internet has taken a joke reference in a video game as attribution to a real person - because that's never happened before... :P quote.org/quote/we-need-not-destroy-the-past-it-518400

Now I'm starting to doubt my memory. Thanks. My memory needs that.

Wikiquote seems to indicate it is actually a legitimate quote. Anyway, yes, the concept of a caricature is an English concept. en.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_Cage#1940s

Just curious, is there an SE moderator app for iPhone?

Either way, I hope nobody will expect any of the upcoming moderators to be perfect. I know I'll make mistakes. I hope to fix them before any serious damage is done, but I definitely won't be perfect.

@pacmaninbw Nope. The mod tools mostly don't work in the iOS app at all - just deleting comments for the most part.

@Mast I will also make mistakes if I am elected, part of the reason I didn't want to run.
I hope there is a community of moderators that can help guide us in the process.
I may have to relearn swift.

The Teachers' Lounge and the Moderator Team are both excellent resources for help in general moderation, as are the existing mods here. There's generally an excellent support structure, as long as you look out for it.

Good!

1:23 PM
I've heard the TL can be a bit toxic at times, but I know where the helpful ones tend to hang out. I'm also sure the rest of the CR community won't mind giving feedback, including a couple of the ex-moderators when available.

I'm sure rolfl and Simon will provide some guidance for sticky issues.

The TL is generally a lot better now than it was. We created some new tooling for it this year that is designed to allow mods to flag stuff in the TL that's problematic for a subset of elected TL mods to vote on.

@Mast you are in Europe? I don't remember seeing your Time zone/Offset in your Questionnaire. That should be something that we ask in Passing.
we will be losing our only Moderator that was outside of the 4 North America Time zones

Yes Mast is

what about you, @Peilonrayz? I haven't had a chance to read yours yet

I live in Europe too

one day I will Sail the Atlantic Ocean and visit Europe... hopefully there won't be an Epidemic when I do it...

If you want my 2c if you like cold wet islands Ireland has a lot nicer views than the UK.

4:13 PM
@Malachi NLD, it's in my profile.

6:09 PM
@Peilonrayz Did you move to UK from Germany in recent years?

@SᴀᴍOnᴇᴌᴀ No, I've always lived in England, however I've travelled a lot. I do love skiing in the Austrian Alps tho :)

2 hours later…
8:21 PM
@Mast @Malachi I think we need one from Europe and one from North America as replacements, although one from Asia would be good.
