Q: Ubuntu 13.10 dash and launcher is missing after installation

I got an HP Compaq D530 CMT . I installed Ubuntu 13.10 32-bit. when I booted up and logged in I saw only the desktop picture and nothing else. I have no idea what to do, at least I am familiar with terminal to carry out simple tasks with it. Can anyone please tell me what is wrong and how to fix ...

@Alan did you reboot at the end? at minimum restarting X would do the trick.

yes I did, and I logged in and saw the desktop pic only

I am on my other desktop and I have ccsm. I looked at the unity plugin, and I see a checkbox. On the HP there was no checkbox unless if I clicked on ubuntu unity plugin. Why is there no checkbox on the HP?

you'll want to go to the /var/log

look like Xorg.log

or some such

the one you want is probably Xorg.0.log

is there anything shouting "ERR"?

you could also pastebin it if you like

something from the log, I copied it to my flashdrive and brought it to this PC. I am not using the one with problems, it freezes after a while.

hmm. that doesn't sound good. you'll also want to look at /var/log/dmesg

blast. ubuntu might not route kernel messages there

maybe /var/log/messages

i don't think i'm gonna have a solution for you. but if you provide these logs in your question (linking to a pastebin is fine), it should help someone else help you. and i'll definitely look through them too, just in case it is something i know about

ubuntu and debian behave a bit different from the other mainstream distros

oh i was thinking that file

i'd be looking for anything that says error, warning, problem, fatal, etc

and specifically anything that looks video related

@Alan that ones prolly fine. it just means if when it mounted the hard drive sdb5, if there errors, it would try to mount it again, but this time in read-only mode

the acpi/ichp one, i have no idea about. interesting

i found a bug report about the acpi..systemio warning. it's prolly nothing to be concerned with

do you know how to enable the unity plugin without ccsm because that is my problem

i don't know if we need them, i was just in data gathering mode to aid others who might be able to help

you could maybe try reinstalling unity

at its simplest, maybe: sudo apt-get install unity

I purged unity and installed it via terminal already

vnc works, but even easier just to get going is probably teamviewer

Q: Unity Launcher Missing not in ccsm

i am in 12.10 and when i was tweaking the unity bar suddenly went away!! restart does nothing I had ccsm installed so through the terminal i launched ccsm in there i went to the desktop option and Ubutnu unity plugin was no there another answer to another question told me to type unity --reset...
