A: 2021 Moderator Election Q&A - Question Collection

KilisiRecently all our mods used OUR diamonds to protest things outside TWP that had zero to do with our community, leaving us without mods at one point. What will be your commitment to TWP if similar situations arise?

armor piercing question of W00tiness. +1
Although I believe most of us are aware of the background and why of the proposed question, I also believe that it could be phrased more constructively and better. Currently that would be a yes/no answer and that hardly will tell us about the candidates character and stance.
(assuming good intentions) A suggested variation I can think of now is: "How would you try to conciliate the needs and opinions of TWP users with the agenda and official posture of SE? How would you approach a situation when both seem to be different in some aspects?"
@DarkCygnus I do think it cuts to the heart of the matter. Ignoring the 800lb gorilla does not change the fact that he is in the room
@DarkCygnus I also suspect how this particular question is answered will affect how much certain users will continue to participate. It's no fun trying to help people when all you get for your trouble is nonsense.
In my opinion there is nothing outside TWP to conciliate that should involve our diamond in any shape or form. I'd consider voting for people who are committed to using our diamond purely for our benefit. Seems reasonable to me.
I get you two guys (@Old_Lamplighter). My intention on writing that comment was because of this quote from the Post: "We reserve some editorial control in the selection of the questions and may opt not to select a question that is tangential or irrelevant to moderation or the election..."... that's why I think that if you want this question to "pass" a better (?) phrasing may increase those odds :) or at least won't harm those odds ;)

Could be just me and the late hour but I'm having a hard time parsing what "conciliate" means in this particular sentence. Are you asking about whether the candidate sees a role for themselves with their new status outside Workplace, such as on main meta or in the moderator council? I second @DarkCygnus that it would make sense to rephrase the first sentence as well to something that requires a more useful answer. (I really don't think this is at risk of editorial control, I believe that's reserved for questions that are problematic for very different reasons.)
@Lilienthal yeah, that was from an edit someone did, I'll just roll back to the original which was straightforward
@Kilisi I've suggested an edit of my own which I think covers what you're trying to get at and asks candidates to give a more detailed answer on where they'll put their energy. Of course roll it back if you disagree with my phrasing.
@Lilienthal you guys edits are way off what I'm asking. I don't care what mods do outside twp. We had mods who spent 5 minutes here and 10 hours showboating elsewhere, and that's fine by me. But when there were issues elsewhere in their fantasy World they used our diamond to try and force their agenda at our expense. That's what I want to avoid. I don't care what they do, I care what they do with OUR diamond.
If you keep having to clarify what you mean, it means your question is unclear...
@mxyzplk or it's too clear and people want some wiggle room added.

As written, the question literally contrasts Workplace with the rest of the network so I'm honestly puzzled how it's not asking about what mods do outside the site. I simply don't get what this "force their agenda at our expense' refers to nor do I really see how a diamond on Workplace would open doors elsewhere, except for the elements like mod council and potentially weight on meta which my edit was about.
@Lilienthal I doubt you're puzzled at all. Recently all our mods attempted to use OUR diamond to protest things outside TWP, leaving us without mods at one point, and you know it
If this question refers to 2019 firing of Monica Cellio, which prompted dozens of mod resignations across the network, wasn't she a TWP mod to begin with? The firing directky affected this community, did it not? That many fellow moderators and ordinary users on multiple sites supported her and demanded, unsuccessfully, her reinstatement is, I think, a testament of character.
@Mari-LouA I'm dedicated to THIS site, we were left without mods with no notice because they were following other agendas I deem irrelevant. Mods can and do ban people. Likewise SE can do the same to mods. I want to know if potential mods are committed to THIS site in terms of OUR diamond. Someone got hurt, that's sad, but we didn't do it, and I see no reason to change the focus of this site from helping people with workplace problems to participating in outside squabbles.
@Kilisi At no point was this site left without mods, though we did run on a skeleton crew for a short while. It's a rather extreme stretch to say that the removal of one our longest serving moderators had "zero to do with our community" and you seem to suggest a need to "toe the party line" far beyond anything that even SE themselves would like to see. But I see we are approaching this from radically different points of view so I'll step back from this discussion.
@Lilienthal great, because you're factually incorrect. We had no active mods workplace.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/6333/…

Strange stance of opinion, a moderator on TWP is fired, someone who dedicated years to the site and who moderated it diligently and conscientiously, meanwhile her fellow colleagues are stunned by SE's behaviour and in a show of support either stop moderating or resign temporarily. I remember that Snow and Mr Positive (aka Neo) asked to be reinstated after a brief hiatus. If that's not showing care to the community, I don't know what is.
So ”Will you forgo any ethics or morals other than the glamorous job of cleaning up behind me?” is the question you’re trying to ask?
@Mari-LouA feel free to run for mod and use that as your answer
@mxyzplk feel free to run for mod and use that as your answer
feel free to run for mod and use that as your answer I suggest that you should self candidate yourself. You have the rep and the experience.
You guys don't get it, I'm all for the moral high ground. But use our diamond for us. Feel free to do anything which doesn't involve sabotaging this site. Leave our diamond out of it.
-1 So you're fine with SE firing YOUR elected moderators without a just cause? And leaving other moderators concerned and confused about their own position and duties. You know, or maybe you need to be reminded, her good name was soiled in public and you say "Carry on; Business as usual"? Has a mod fewer rights than an ordinary user?
18:58
@Mari-LouA you're beating a dead horse trying to twist it into something... I'll leave you to it.
I did my 10 years of entirely thankless diamond modding, never again.
