@rbp what's confusing is that you addressed your comments to voretaq7's point, but you weren't actually addressing his point at all, you were making a completely separate point. He simply said that if you get dropped, then you're no longer in two-way communication and you still need to contact the controlling authority. He wasn't really saying anything about initial contact, which is what you were talking about.

@BretCopeland I think the point that @rbp was trying to make was that ATC can drop you from radar service without kicking you out of the Charlie

@BretCopeland hrm. my point is that terminating the radar service by itself doesn't mean you are no longer in two-way radio contact with ATC -- they can still give you a non-radar ATC service at that point.

I've never heard a controller say "radar services terminated" when they weren't also saying "frequency change approved". That was clearly the context he was referring to. I've heard "radar contact lost" when I wasn't being dropped, but not terminated.

I guess I see the last point about how "frequency changed approved" is explicitly the phrase that terminates two way contact. I think it would have been more clear to lead with that.
