Q: What defensive option would be ideal for martial characters?

Terry WindwalkerI have been hearing players around me saying that "after lv.10, you should move from AC to missing chances and the stuff that won't let people target you (e.g. total concealment or total cover)". That actually make sense, since a Cloak of Displacement, Major can easily make the missing chance be ...

There’s basically 3 broad routes you can take in designing your general game resolution mechanics. They have their different strengths, but knowing what they’re good for is part of design. These also tie into a lot of player preference in terms of what systems they like vs. dislike. Unified MechanicsThese really became the hotness in the late […]

Q: New players' characters are not adventurous and are often insulting

Finncent PriceI'm a new GM with new players and we are having some friction in our game that I would like some ideas for reducing. We have finished Lost Mines of Phandevler, tried a side quest that didn't go well, and are on to Shattered Obelisk next. I would summarize the problem as the characters are not a...

Q: What should I do if my character is deeply related to a villain that they are loyal to (the villain has recently revealed themselves)?

ekoI feel stuck as a character between a choice of my party or the villain. I know that I want to help the party, but my character is loyal to this person (who they had no idea of where they were) who wants him to complete a task opposite to that of the party. Basically my party needs to deliver an ...

@goodguy5 I don't know. I personally find it unattractive to look at the chat, with all these spammy "hot question" and blog feed banners in here, but that may just be because there is so little other conversation going on. And when nothing is going on, there is also less reason to check in here, and just see a bunch of bot posts. So it may be a self-reinforcing thing.
@ThomasMarkov I thought because you mentioned you have a background in maths (having worked as a math teacher) that your screen name was in reference to Markov models, rather than being a real world name? Although I think the guy who invented them was named Andrey, not Thomas.
@NobodytheHobgoblin Markov chains.
And while you’re here, @NobodytheHobgoblin am I missing something about this question? It seems like a pretty straightforward “idea generation” sort of question, but maybe I’m misunderstanding the ask.
11:53
@ThomasMarkov Yes, I was on the edge about it too, whether to ask for clarification what the exact ask is. If the ask is "generate ideas for me what the poison could do" it would be idea gen. But it also reads as if the asker does not really have a good grasp on how poison works in 5e, and there happens to be a poison that is both a near perfect solution for his situation, and rules-conform.
And you also can read it as a question to how to deal with such a situation where a player made a potentially fatal mistake, which I think woudl be an OK one for experience based answers too.
Unrelated to this, I think its time for me to take a bit of a hiatus of the site again. It's just too much fun to figure out some of the rules conundrums, or to help others, but it is also too much of a time suck, and I am not good in doing things in moderation. So I'll step away a bit again, at least for a while. I suspect I eventually will be back.

@NobodytheHobgoblin These alternatives read as good directions to direct OP toward, not as what the question actually says. We need to be careful not to assume what OP is asking when it is unclear.

Q: Can you use Favored Foe multiple times on the same creature?

Hijack222In D&D 5e (Tasha's Cauldron of Everything), if I hit a creature and use the Favored Foe feature to mark it and deal additional damage, would I be able to stop concentrating on the initial mark and then use Favored Foe again to mark the same creature, dealing the additional damage once more, if I ...

Q: Magic effects of light and darkness

Fabio ValentiniI have a question about the magic effects inherent in light and darkness in d&d 5. Within an area subject to Darkness (spell level 2) if I wield a sword that magically emits light, the light is not affected by the spell. My question is what happens if have a magical effect of Darkness versus a ma...
