Q: Creating a campaign that ends with a TPK by design

PorschieyI'm creating a campaign that takes players from level 3 to level 15+. The premise is that the party is granted a special role by the reigning good King to protect and serve (essentially they are special ops for the Kingdom). Over time, the players will investigate and protect the nation from thre...

Q: Does one good STR saving throw frees the monster from being restrained both by Entangle and Ensnaring strike?

Lisa RangerSay a party of a Druid, Wizard and a Ranger REALLY doesn't want the creature to move during combat. The Wizard casts Maximilian Earthen Grasp The Druid casts Entangle The Ranger casts Ensnaring Strike and hits the monster Say the monster fails all three STR saving checks (let's say it's a mage wi...

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica Lancer sounds fun
do I need to shout the name of the game?

LANCER
even that feels good

I played in three sessions for a test drive, and am currently GMing the Wallflower campaign as a relaxation between Actually Serious Campaigns of My Own Making, and it's very fun so far.

I've been musing with not just making this RPG without a name classless, but actually making it have a system where characters have a patron/benefactor/mentor/talent as the source of power.
So from a D&D perspective, but most obvious analogy is the Warlock, becasue she has a Patron which is a give/take relationship, but so does say a Paladin (via his oath). The Cleric might have a Benefactor which means they have a different relationship with their source of power
Your typical Fighters have might a mentor (Think Suko in A:TLA), or more rarely be a 'talent' (think classic greek heroes) - Barbarians might have an opposite ratio
It also means 'hexblades' or 'Gish' type characters (mostly as it's classless) wouldn't be fixed to picking fighter/magic powers just whatever their patron/mentor/talent provided.
This is all based on the way warlock's get their power in D&D 5e, the patron and pact are such a great way of bootstrapping RP and backstory

Someone_Evil: I haven't set up my python dev environment, but I occured to me that if you knew someone was trying to invade your dreams you might fare better if you went without sleep initially, at least until the DC to refuse to sleep was higher than the wisdom save (assuming your character has a feel for DCs based on how tired they felt vs hwo scary the dreams are)

Just to get use out of your days, you mean?

@Someone_Evil yeeees
I'm assuming while you're not asleep you're doing something productive like trying to find out who is invading your dreams and not dying
also... If I had a bad enough dream that it could literally kill me I'd not want to sleep
D&D not having a mechanism for resisting the urge to sleep instead of just suffering when you do resist makes it less of a smooth process
I've also been wondering if magically induced sleep (either from Sleep or Catnap) makes you vulnerable to dream?

I don't see why it wouldn't. Though arguably you'd be foiling the rest prevention part (at least when under the subject of sleep)

11:32 AM
@Someone_Evil oh so you could 'fake sleep' to burn the dream invader's spell slots?

I suppose, It's not wholly free, and that line is presupposing the attack is just casting dream waiting for you to take a long rest, and doesn't have a scry going or something

@Someone_Evil yeah this is really getting my noggin going

Of note that each dream failed (=failed saving throw to) will deal 3d6 damage, which is quickly going to significant once you're into the realm of actively fighting it for long periods of time

@Someone_Evil Yes, that could be considered - but so long as you can heal up between each sleep attempt you would be ok

You'd need outside assistance for 8.4 healing per dream (average with a Wis 10 vs DC 17)
Admittedly, that's more or less a 1st level cure wounds per dream, which I suppose isn't that bad

11:42 AM
@Someone_Evil or a stack of potions

I mean, to typical adventurers cure wounds is gonna be in easier supply than potions

yeah true

Or were you planning to dream a monarch to death?

although our current group has no healing available to them
@Someone_Evil 👀🤫

Either way, I think I'd recommend not relying on dream alone. Minions have their place

11:46 AM
that's a good point, unless you want to do a sort of 'send a message' thing

I mean it's excellent for message sending like that
Mostly just thinking aloud, having a BBEG send dreams with the warning to stay away from X dungeon sounds like an excellent way to send the party on a detour
Remember to have the BBEG laugh at them for taking the bait when they eventually are confronted

that's on par with buttons that say do not push, and telling someone to not think of pink elephants

Q: Antipathy Sympathy spell effects

DaveyI am hoping the community can offer clarification on this spell. In my game tonight (I am the GM), an object was the target of the sympathy spell. Two PCs failed their saving throw and one succeeded. The two that failed immediately were drawn to the object, leaving the one PC wondering what th...

I feel like this could make an excellent challenge for Code Golf

I don't think I'm following you?

12:07 PM
@Someone_Evil which part?

For what a coding challenge has to do with any of this?

maybe it's not as good as I initially thought but if the challenge set out each 'bot' as a wizard trying to sleep the another one to death. The trying to figure out what strategy is best to both recover spell slots and not sleep so much as to be vulnerable to other wizards
like a Dream Battle Royale

12:42 PM
@Xirema aha, I see.
@AncientSwordRage This has a vague "Wheel of Time" feel from the dream wallkers (I forget Jordan's name for that; only a few of the ones who can access the Source are able to do that) - dreaming as a battleground
Hmm, need to check when Season 2 of Wheel of Time gets untracked ... I was enjoying that.

Q: How do I tell my DM that dice don’t need to dictate the story?

Astral bard.So while I like my DM, it's kind of hard to say that our game has a consistent story and that she legit decides everything on dice rolls. Oh you want to persuade that character? Yeah, that depends on my dice. Oh, I need to know if this NPC will respond to something. Dice. "It's on my dice if anyt...

Q: Balancing Command while taking into account languages

comedroidriveThe Command spell says: You speak a one-word command to a creature you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or follow the command on its next turn. The spell has no effect if the target is undead, if it doesn’t understand your language, or if your command is dir...

@BESW I informed Groody about your statement, Groody asks "For those of is lacking the long term relation with him, do you think he could post his findings to a meta?" — as far as I'm concered you did exactly that in your statment.
But if there is something that would help and not bother you much that springs to your mind, let me know.

@Akixkisu I dont see that BESW sourced any racist statements or sentiments from AngryGM, which is what I think Groody is looking for.

@ThomasMarkov that would be one way to do it, but maybe there is a better option that doesn't include directing traffic.
E. g. someone else sourced it, and we can direct them to that without directing to the source directly.

lol that's the same thing with an extra step

The estra step is the essential thing, Groody wants a pointy link.
As far as I'm concerned, and I doubt there are many who would disagree, BESW's statement is good enough.
Now, the pointy link could also be a blog post of someone sourcing the racist rhetoric, dissecting it in less or more detail. It certainly doesn't need to involve a bunch of new writing from BESW, who would need to go back to the source years after the statement to do such a writeup.

7:59 PM
@Akixkisu I think a link opens up quibbling over what is or isn't ok when it was a pattern of content that was troubling
I, for one, trust BESW implicitly in this. — KRyan 2 hours ago

The post that got AngryGM removed from the feeds was his post about COVID-19, in which he used racially charged epithets to refer to the virus. (And doubled down in comments, I might add.)

However, this specific post is not the whole picture. Subsequently, moderators and room owners came to learn that over the past couple of years Angry GM has engaged in patterns of behaviour that are at odds with the values we strive to uphold in RPG chat: kindness and compassion in particular. Giving his posts a place in our chat feed would be at odds with those values, so he no longer has one.
