Q: What is a "Game Jam"?

Thomas MarkovIf you've been in TRPG General Chat before, you may have seen BESW share a link to a "jam" on itch.io that's about tabletop games. Curious, I went to itch.io and there is a Game Jams tab where you can browse all of the currently active jams. From what I can gather, it is some sort of event where ...

Question for any LARP-ers or cosplayers around here: how do you mimic d&d-type magic in a video without editing software? My group for a project decided we were doing a version of the pink dragon incident but we made the plot include an evil sorcerer who uses her magic to blast people.
Our supplies are: 4 cloaks (varied colors), my Lady Blackbird accessories, an axe, a broken axe, a sword, a foam cutlass, and possibly a ribbon stick like for rhythmic gymnastics. I can also put my hands on yarn, fabric, and paper on short notice
Also we can’t use glitter or anything because we’re filming at the levee and there’s rules about not dumping stuff like that
Hmm so you can't control the lighting.
@BESW we know general conditions — sunny probably. Hot, definitely. No shade anymore cause the city’s removing a bunch of nonnative trees for drought reasons.
What does the magic blasting have to do? Like, not what it looks like but what its effect is.
@BESW Attack A, H, and G hard enough in combination with weapon attacks that they run away, and possibly teleporting the sorcerer away with the dragon (G’s dog)
I’m probably going to bring the ribbon stick and suggest she wave it at us but I’m good at controlling it and the person we dragooned into the sorcerer role doesn’t have the same practice
But also the ribbon stick doesn’t look like it hurts when it hits someone even though it does
Teleport is easy; turn off the camera, move, turn it back on.
Looking like it hurts is the job of the person getting hit.
I'll get back to you in a minute.
Okay, so in Doctor Who there's a lot of really high-concept scifi with almost no budget at all. One of the ways they represent "big flashy science weapon" is to have the actors make it clear there's an attack happening (attacker mimes the attack with the weapon very clearly, preferably while shouting something like EXTERMINATE!; target writhes in agony or falls over) while the whole screen flashes white or changes color.
I suggest experimenting beforehand with effects like shining a flashlight into the lens, or waving some strips of colored paper in front of the lens really fast.
Something to represent an attack so powerful that it's blotting out the whole scene momentarily.
Close-up of wizard gesturing, brief long shot of wizard and heroes with "flashy" effect, medium shot of heroes responding.
Add incantations, pew-pew, and screaming.
Also: consider if there's a way you could be a body/hand double for the sorcerer when wielding the ribbon stick.
Shoot from the back, shoot hands-only, etc.

@BESW probably
Those are all great ideas
It’s going to be bad in the end and that’s okay because it’s a high school Spanish project but we decided we didn’t want it to be quite as bad as our first go was so now I’m worried

Ah yes. I had to film a scene from the Great Gatsby for English class.

Q: What are reasons to remove (or "burninate") a tag?

Groody the HobgoblinI have seen multiple discussions here about if this or that tag should be removed as it has outlived its utility. I understand that the objective of tags is to help attract expertise to a certain question area. It is not clear to me what the downside is for having any given tag. I think there is ...

@BardicWizard I guess we didn't try when we LARPed at uni? It was all given that shouting "AIR BLAST 2" or "Mass Fear 1!" Was sufficient and no special effects needed
11:29
@BardicWizard Oh! Get a bit of almost-clear plastic and wobble it in front of the camera, see what that looks like.
Bonus points if it's lightly tinted.
11:40
A lot of effects that are done "in camera" have very little to do with what the actors in the shot are seeing.

Q: Can the spell component for the Summon Draconic Spirit spell be also used for the Fizban's Platinum Shield spell?

KallenzThe description of the Summon Draconic Spirit spell lists the following components (FTD, p. 21; emphasis mine): Components: V, S, M (an object with the image of a dragon engraved on it, worth at least 500 gp) The description of the Fizban's Platinum Shield spell lists the following components (...

Q: Potion Miscibility: does the DM choose the permanent effect?

Lio ElbammalfIn the Potion Miscibility variant rule is the choice of permanent effects up to the DM? The rules for rolling 100 on mixing potions is: Only one potion works, but its effect is permanent. Choose the simplest effect to make permanent, or the one that seems the most fun. For example, a potion of h...

Q: Potion Miscibility: growth and fire breath

Lio ElbammalfSince our session 0 we've included the Potion Miscibility variant rule but never used it 'til now. The party (lvl 5 now) has hoarded quite a few potions - all common or uncommon level - and only used healing potions. At the end of the last session the alchemist decided they would mix a few togeth...

Ooh that's not good
@HotRPGQuestions you could do both but tell them they'll be dispelled soon
That sounds fun
That potion is basically Kaiju in a Can!
