@G.Moylan I saw some recommendations for 1980s cyberpunk "classics," and would like to suggest, instead, stories which deal with those themes but don't treat Asian cultures and people as just an aesthetic or an antagonist. Blackfish City, Sunvault, Octavia Butler again, The Waste Tide...
Lately the cyberpunk works that get me at all excited, have been TRPGs by SEA creators.

hey there @linksassin, how're things going?

[sigh] Magpie Games works with excellent creators to make awesome games. They almost as regularly support the slimiest, creepiest corners of the TRPG industry. This Avatar thing they're doing accomplishes both at once.
Their latest stretch goal announcement -- only two days before the Kickstarter ends so it's harder for people to figure out what's going on and cancel before Magpie Games collects pledges, that's not suspicious at all -- is an Actual Play event for which they're hiring someone who is a major associate and supporter of some of the most notorious contemporary names in the industry.
I'm not gonna give details here in main chat, 'cause nobody should have to see that unless they want to, but the receipts are publicly available.

And here I was thinking of supporting it

It's got some great people involved!

Alright I got a theory.
Every adventure novel I have ever read falls into one of two groupings.
In the first grouping, the novel starts off with no danger for a short period of time, then the characters leave ‘home base’, and go on an adventure. The whole adventure is minor risk, spiked with intermediate and major threats. Once or twice throughout the novel, the characters arrive at a safe haven for a brief period of time.
In the other model, the characters are for the most of the time, in their home environment, with little or no threat. Every so often, it is spiked with minor or major thr
TTRPG adventures that are like the first one seem to be (for the most part) the ones where the DM plans a story and railroads the players at least somewhat.
The second one, on the other hand, is more episodic, lending to player driven games.

@AncientSwordRage This has always been the problem with both the Avatar franchise and Magpie Games; simultaneously uplifting great and terrible people. At least this time they've put more Asian people in decision-making positions. I have no judgement for backers who want to still back it to support the excellent creators making the game, but also no judgement for backers who find Magpie Games' troublesome history and current support of known enablers to be a deal-breaker.

@Shalvenay G'day, not too bad.

@TheDragonOfFlame I really like Mission Briefings and similar opening-scene structures.

I just stumbled over a five-hour Actual Play of Goblin Court from last year.

XD

About 20 minutes in and they're just starting to define the castle and court, so I don't have a lot to say about it yet. I'm not sure they've picked up on the subtext but they're having fun.
The blurb text under the video suggests that whoever wrote the blurb really doesn't get what motivates goblins.
They're leaning into the "goblins are happy and helpful but humans confuse them" thing though.

Gotta love it when a answer goes from a one-liner quotation to basically re-writing an entire wiki page after a comment asking to elaborate is left.

> A character is a different:
- physicality; it moves different than you.
- vocality; it sounds different than you.
- and motivation; it wants different things.
It is very important that we understand motivation as haunted house performers, because our characters often want to kill everyone who walks through! As an actor, we cannot let that happen. We have to control that.

@BESW I would love to watch this, but my work has decided to kill our access to youtube again
apparently bandwidth should be used for work things?!

And nobody ever uses youtube to learn how to do something for their profession.
Nosirreejanebob.

@BESW so it was completely blocked before, and I made this argument and had to go up the chain to learn it was bandwidth, not just policy
They said recently "I've been asked to block access but instead I'm just going to ask you not to use it".... so I have been, but now it's saying I'm offline

Can we move that convo to dragons?

@Akixkisu I think we're done? Certainly seems worth leaving something here. If people want to continue it later I guess we can re-start in dragons

It should be opt-in.

My initial statement above is still here. Specifics are moved.

Thanks.

@BESW that's perfect I think?
@Akixkisu true

@AncientSwordRage We don't litigate requests for Dragons-moving, we just do it. That's one of the only ways it can stay an actual, legitimate tool for keeping this room low-harm and non-hostile.

@BESW good point, thanks for making that clear
Has anybody else come across this before? blog.janicehardy.com/2017/01/…
it looked useful/interesting

I've encountered that kind of thing. I think the specific questions need to reflect the focus of the work.

1:27 PM
@BESW oh absolutely

A lot of that sort of question is very much the kind of thing that TRPGs ask during character creation.

@Someone_Evil It's not working, the so called 'fix' in the inane auto community comments. Unable to flag as 'no longer needed' - flag gets rejected. Yet another addition of Noise over Signal by the SE tools.

They haven't announced the rework of the system as status complete.

@KorvinStarmast You have some answers here and here to upvote methinks

So until they do, it will not reflect the intention in the announcment.

Part of making my character was choosing from this list of Archetypes, twice. First for my character's "Nature," which defined her inner life and how she perceives the world and her place in it. Then for her "Demeanor," which is what she projected outwardly to the world and is the filter for manifesting her Nature.

@BESW I remember those! But for VtM

My character was something like Nature: Protector and Demeanor: Teacher.
Nature and Demeanor map pretty exactly to "How she views herself" and "How she wants to appear" in the article you linked.

1:37 PM
@BESW yeah, it's very good map

My own Goblin Court has "How she appears to the world" in the form of the Goblin's role at Court.
And I expressed "What does she think about?" in the Goblin Goal.

@Someone_Evil already done, but I can't grasp how anyone thought any of this was a good idea.

@KorvinStarmast Presumably, not realizing there are more than two sites...

If I've learned anything it's that there are alarmingly many ways to convince yourself that something is a great idea when, in reality, it very much is not

Yeah, a lot of times you end up going to Abilene.

@BESW I'm struggling to pick two for my current character, which I guess I was looking this stuff up in the first place

Sometimes interiority is overrated at character creation. I prefer to look for relationships.
That's why your Goblin Goal is something you do with others.

interesting

I like to let interiority emerge through play, and instead start with prompts for how my character moves in the world. The why behind the moving comes later for me.

1:54 PM
See my intuition is to start with the motivation and then grow the relationships out from there

Both are legit!
Sometimes it depends on the character for me.

@Ben Thank you!

More often, it depends on the medium.

@BESW oh definitely

But also there's a cultural element to it; how does identity form and what influences it?

1:56 PM
I think what makes this extra difficult is my character is trying to find their place in the world, they essentially don't know themselves very well

I grew up with one foot in a communal society, so in some ways my relationships are my interiority.

thats interesting

@AncientSwordRage Why can't this be part of their interiority, then?
Don't let words on a character sheet fool you into thinking there's one word that will sum up a person's inner self for their entire life.

I'm not looking for a single word, trying to get the feeling of wrapping my head around how they think and act
how does somebody who is finding there way in the world do that? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm sure I went through that phase at one point but I'm drawing a blank

Well, how do they feel about it? Is it an exciting opportunity or a frustration? Do they look forward to being more confident about themself or do they want to stay in this exploration mode as long as possible?

2:10 PM
It's a fun start to grad school when you have a wrongly added hold on your account, one of your courses is listed wrong due to a system error and so you (and the rest of the class) can't access it, the nearest dining hall is closed from lack of staff, you are the only student who doesn't have an assigned school (my co-operating teacher quit), and you and one other person have schedules designed so horribly that you can spend at most 2.5 hours on any given day visiting your assigned school.
Luckily most of these are fixed, or will be fixed within the next three days, so I'm just laughing at the sheer coincidence that these all happened now

2:38 PM
@BESW that's something to think about
@Medix2 lets hope nothing esle can go wrong D:

@BESW I wasn't terribly familiar with the Cyberpunk genre on a broader scale before playing 2077, but yeah now that you mention it the treatment of Asian cultures and people really stand out.

@Medix2 Protip: become best friends with your program director/chair.

@ThomasMarkov I second this

There's perhaps an argument to be made that 2077 is simply a continuation of the ideas put forth in the original Cyperpunk RPG, which, from what I understand, had a decent amount of influence of the direction of the genre. So it's perhaps not necessarily that they're furthering the stereotype per se, but they're instead simply following the original story beats. But still, it does ring a bit sour that the big bad is - surprise, surprise - Japanese.

@ThomasMarkov Already am, she was my undergrad advisor

2:51 PM
@Medix2 Excellent. This should help a bit with turning major administration screwups into temporary inconveniences.

And she apparently get her COVID shot so early that she sent in the confirmation before the school had set up their system to receive them, and so she received an email last Friday saying should would be fired on October 15th (she's since fixed this error)

@AncientSwordRage Isn't that more or less the journey of life?
@Medix2 It was no coincidence, it was a plot. They are out to get you! 😎

I imagine the first week or two of school will have plenty of obscure hurdles and system errors for everyone to figure out together. Like the doors not unlocking at the start of the school day XD

@KorvinStarmast most of are starting from somewhere though, I think of this character as having basically been sheltered/doted on most of their life

@AncientSwordRage hmm, spoiled only child? That would be my mother in law. 😛

2:55 PM
@KorvinStarmast Youngest of two, but their older brother left home early, and all the parents effects went onto the youngest

If we have a question closed for "off topic", but its actually a dupe, is there any advantage to switching that over?

@ThomasMarkov I can't think of any

@AncientSwordRage Maybe optics to users who stumble across it in the future?

@ThomasMarkov only advantage I can see is search terms. if someone is searching and stumbles upon that one they can trace it back to the OG for the answer
and optics, also a good point

I think so. Send users to the right one, and automatically redirect non-account visitors

2:57 PM
@ThomasMarkov it's just an extra click to realise it's off topic though

@G.Moylan Conveniently, in the partiuclar question Im asking about the dupe target is mentioned in the question body as not being a dupe lololol

@ThomasMarkov hehehehe

@ThomasMarkov if it's punted into the Reopen queue, then it can be "Leave Close"-d as a duplicate

@G.Moylan off-topic things shouldn't get answers though

@Someone_Evil Want me to just send you a flag for it then?
@AncientSwordRage It's technically on topic though.

2:58 PM
@bobble smart

@AncientSwordRage Thomas said it was actually a dupe

Might be worth a flag to have the mods take a look, at least

otherwise, I agree @AncientSwordRage

@G.Moylan OH I had assumed that the dupe target was also off-topic
my bad

Sent the flag up the chain.

3:17 PM
@ThomasMarkov Pointing to the dupe, which... oh, isn't there a thing against duping to a closed question?

@Medix2 the dupe target in mind is open.

Then I wouldn't say it's a dupe XD

@Medix2 the dupe question is currently mis-closed as off-topic, is I believe what's happening

Ah, then yeah, I'd say dupe closure is better since it points to the other queation
IIRC non-logged-in users are auto redirected through dupe closures even

There’s some broader context to it that the mods need to consider anyway, so I’ll leave it to them.
I think we’ve used the phrase “belligerent question” before to describe a question that isn’t really genuine and is used more to air some sort of grievance about some other site interaction.

3:22 PM
does this fall into that category?
that also seems like it should be a meta post

Yeah, that seems to be what the original closure was about.

In all honesty, belligerent questions show community consensus even better due to the downvote totals
Which I realized a second too late when I voted to delete an answer recently before realizing that the downvotes speak volumes

But apart from that context, it’s a perfectly fine question that can be duped to a high quality target.
@Medix2 which one?

The recent dupe closed Meta
But people definitely disagree on whether wrong answers should be deleted, even if Stack guidance is rather straightforward

@Medix2 that’s fair, Undeleted.

3:30 PM
@Medix2 I'm pretty sure we never delete wrong answers. Just answers that don't answer the question.

I follow a few questions with highly negative scores and existing delete votes. And have seen deleted answers to questions that did answer

@NautArch we delete wrong answers that don’t meet other quality standards.

But that's perhaps a fine line; what counts as an answer and all that
Like this one which I feel is a valid answer

We also delete right answers that don’t meet certain quality standards.

Yeah there's subjectivity to what actually meets our standards, what actually answers a question (especially given that frame challenges are a thing), and then I'm sure there's people who just want to see massively negative answers deleted because they think they look bad and shouldn't be read by most people

3:35 PM
@Medix2 it’s only valid in the sense that it’s a technically correct response to any question about a game that gives ruling powers to the GM.

And I lack any real statistics on whether keeping a -50 answer around actually makes people avoid following its advice or only serves to further the use of such bad ideas, so I don't even know what is right. I really just know what MSE suggests

Speaking of deleting answers, I've got one that I've been contemplating deleting, but it's highly upvoted. Should I still consider deleting it, seeing as someone (or many someones) has found it useful? the Question also has a LOT of views. And while I stand by the point I make in my answer, I'm not 100% on the quality of it

@ThomasMarkov And that's fair. Though if it added actual support that both interpretations are sensible by explaining why/how they are sensible, I doubt anybody would have deleted it

@Medix2 what would make this an actually valid answer is if it engaged with the question in such a way that demonstrated that Leaving it up totally up to the DM is the best approach. As written, it doesn’t engage with the problem of the question at all.

@G.Moylan You can always add something at the top like "this does not reflect my current thinking"

GcL
3:38 PM
@Medix2 That is a non-answer. It's a comment about the perceived validity of both sides under consideration and a restatement of the role of the DM.

@Medix2 I agree with the point I make in the answer, I'm just unsure of the quality of it. IDK if it really meets quality standards

GcL
@G.Moylan Depends on who you ask. Did you cite sources and certify that it really worked for you in real life for reals?

@GcL I did. IDK, perhaps it's the subject matter. It's this one: rpg.stackexchange.com/a/148920/50702
there are other answers there that I feel like are of higher quality than mine. idk why
I guess it is closed

GcL
@G.Moylan It's kind of a crap question. Essentially, "how do I game with someone who doesn't accept a premise of the game?"

@GcL yeah, which IMO made it hard to answer concisely
maybe I'm just thinking about it too much

GcL
3:43 PM
@G.Moylan There isn't an answer for it. It's like trying to make maps with a flat earther.
Which is funny, since most fantasy worlds are flat... at least according to their maps.

That seems like a good answer to me

GcL
Apparently I had upvoted it. If you wanted to improve it, maybe don't bury the lede.
Probably stick a tl;dr at the top, "The long and short of it is, there's not a great way to "convince" your player to play D&D, nor would I recommend pushing it if this player decides it isn't for them."
dropped the weasel words for you.
Some people just hate diagonal moves. Chess is not a game for them.

3:58 PM
@ThomasMarkov Right, it's not the wrongness/rightness, it's the standards.

@GcL I've revised it multiple times and I think it's as good as it will get at this point. I've just been on the fence about it meeting quality guidelines, but I think perhaps I'm just being hard on myself

@GcL nor is checkers 😁

@NautArch Book eight or nine is the one you have to change your expectations for a bit. Winter's Heart doesn't cover a lot of time, but does tie up a lot of story threads. After that it's smooth reading.

@NautArch The latest episode of Dont Guess the System, coming to televisions nationwide on CSPAN-3

@NautArch The audiobooks are also great :)

@Akixkisu Are they digestible at higher speeds?

@ThomasMarkov Depends on how fast you want to go.

I generally read too fast for audiobooks to be fun for me. I want to get further into the story.
And my commute isn't long enough.

@KorvinStarmast I have difficulty writing myriad of meaningful choices where the players have a model and can weigh what they're going to do instead of just selecting from a multi-choice list. Also, defining goals for exploration in such a way that the players know when they've succeeded or failed can be difficult.
